Carrie Underwood, ‘Mama’s Song’ — Story Behind the Lyrics

Songwriter Luke Laird tells The Boot about the writing session that resulted in Carrie Underwood’s latest blockbuster hit, ‘Mama’s Song.’ Luke wrote the song with Carrie, Kara DioGuardi and Marty Frederiksen, the same writing team behind Carrie’s previous chart-topper, ‘Undo It.”

We wrote this song on the same day as ‘Undo It.’ We were in Los Angeles at Sunset Marquis Hotel … about two years ago. I got this call from Carrie’s management, and they were like, “Hey, do you want to go out L.A. and write with Carrie?” I was like, “Well, yeah. I’d write with Carrie in Dothan, Ala. if I have to!” [laughs] She was already booked to write with Kara and Marty; I don’t know why I got invited, maybe just because Carrie and I had written together before and she felt comfortable with it or something.

Josh Gracin Sets his Standards High

“There’s a lot of negativity (in the industry) that comes from being on a talent show, ” he explained. “We’re criticized for taking the ‘easy way.’ That’s ridiculous. If I didn’t work hard, I wouldn’t have gotten here.”

A Marine on active service when he performed on Idol, Gracin began his career in earnest after his honorable discharge in 2004. His debut album, ‘Josh Gracin, ’ was certified gold that year, with three of its singles — I Want to Live, Nothin’ to Lose, and Stay with Me — breaking into Billboard’s top five Country list. Nothin’ to Lose made it all the way to number one.

But he still feels that he’s the same as he was when he first started writing music as a teen.

Homeless shelter plan concerns residents

A proposal to turn an Eastland Avenue medical facility into a small homeless shelter has residents and Metro Council members in East Nashville concerned and asking questions about the plan.

According to Hollin, the company recently “gifted” the 7, 600-square-foot property to Sophia’s Heart, a nonprofit started by American Idol contestant Danny Gokey who founded the organization in honor of his deceased wife. The foundation provides youth arts and music programming.

The concern started over an e-mail from Hsing Liu, a representative of Sophia’s Heart Foundation, and sent to a Metro Codes Department official.

Liu states in the e-mail his organization would like to use “the existing, fully operational kitchen to give meals to a small group (10 to 20 people) of overnight homeless guests” or use the “hospital suites to give short-term housing to a small group of homeless guests.”

Sons of Sylvia get big break touring with Carrie Underwood

What can they say? Sons of Sylvia adore Carrie Underwood.

“Working with Carrie is an absolute dream, honor, pleasure. It’s amazing. I don’t know what to say, it couldn’t get any better, ” said Austin Clark, who makes up the country-rock trio with his brothers Ashley and Adam. “She’s like an angel.”

For the Sons of Sylvia, the Oklahoma native does seem heaven-sent. Not only did Underwood invite the band to record the duet “What Can I Say” for her 2009 platinum-selling album “Play On, ” she also asked them to open the more than 100 shows on her “Play On Tour.” The blockbuster tour is stopping tonight at Oklahoma City’s Ford Center.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ eliminated contestant: ‘I’ve seen shocking things happen on this show’

“I was a little surprised but you know, I’ve watched this show since it began and I’ve seen absolutely shocking things happen so somebody had to go, ” Henderson told reporters afterwards. “When the two lowest scoring performers were safe, I thought `Corky, we’re in trouble.’ You just don’t know.”

“A low score means nothing, ” Ballas continued. “I had the lowest score every show with Cloris Leachman. What does it mean? People have to call and vote. Those votes mean a big deal. It was kind of sad that we went out at our best. She was starting to crank it up, get strong. She was learning how to speed up her feet. We were just getting to a breakthrough.”

Parents Group: GQ’s Glee Cover “Borders on Pedophilia”

GQ’s sexy Glee cover has gone too far, The Parents Television Council says.

In a statement released Wednesday, the group slams the November issue, which features Cory Monteith, 28, Dianna Agron and Lea Michele, both 24 — all of whom play highschoolers on the hit Fox show — wearing hardly any clothing.

“It is disturbing that GQ, which is explicitly written for adult men, is sexualizing the actresses who play high school-aged characters on Glee in this way. It borders on pedophilia, ” the statement reads.

“By authorizing this kind of near-pornographic display, the creators of the program have established their intentions on the show’s direction, ” the statement concludes. “And it isn’t good for families.”
