Eminem, Lady Antebellum Expected to Lead 2011 Grammy Nominations

BEST NEW ARTIST

Two breakout acts, B.o.B and Mumford & Sons, were mentioned on multiple occasions as strong contenders for best new artist, but most believe it’ll be a battle between Drake and Justin Bieber, with Drake taking the award.

Emerging stars Nicki Minaj and Bruno Mars are ineligible for nomination this year, as their album release dates fall outside of the eligibility period (Sept. 1, 2009-Sept. 30, 2010); in Mars’ case, by one week. Other possible nominees this year include Florence & the Machine, who got a big boost out of their MTV Video Music Awards appearance, and reality TV superstars Susan Boyle and Adam Lambert.

We shot with Kris @ The Shrine Auditorium in LA and it looked awesome!…But in the end, the energy of the AI finale night was just something else, and we had to go with that for our final cut!…This campaign is completely different! It was awesome working with Kris and his team in 09, can’t wait to shoot with him again!

Carly Smithson Interview

Q – When you get on stage, what is your favorite song to perform?

A – I think it’s the new single, “Tear the World Down.” It for us is the definition of what you always hope to achieve in music, a song with that magnitude and power. The lyrics are universal, choir, strings and the heavy guitars. The one thing I always remember as a little girl, I was in “Les Miserable” and I remember coming out on stage and nothing will ever compare to playing with strings and choir. All that kind of stuff is so powerful and moving. I’d always lose myself in these operas I’d perform in. I never really experienced it again until this record, because it’s such a big wall of sound. Honestly I feel like these songs grab me while I’m singing and I just become part of the song through the whole show or forty-five minute set. I mean I’m lost in the music and I was never able to do that again. I think that’s why I wanted to go so far into this sound for this record and for my post “Idol” project, because I remembered when I was nine years old how powerful and emotional and connected to the songs I was when I had full string pieces and full choir and just massive orchestral sound, it’s just so amazing. Definitely though, singing “Tear the World Down, ” I just go to another place. The story of the song you can almost visually see it every time you perform it. It’s very cool and very different.

  1. Good for Anoop to keep working at it. Would like to see some of the S8 finalists have a bit of success on the indie path, he probably has as good a chance as any.

  2. After being on vacation for the almost a week, Adam was spotted at Bali’s airport by a fan

Gotta to add that he sure looks good and well rested! :)

  3. Boy, Adam did a good job of keeping his “vacation” under wraps from the paps and the fans. Adds to my contention that many celebrities tend to have their locations “leaked” so that pictures will surface and they can have their moments in the gossip rags.

  4. So glad Adam got to have some time to relax without being harrassed by the paps.

  5. Boy, Adam did a good job of keeping his “vacation” under wraps from the paps and the fans.

According to the fan who had her pic taken with him, the hotel they stayed at in Bali had tight security. Judging by her tweets, she is apparently still flailing from her encounter with Adam lol!

  6. I also heard that Bali is pretty low on paps so that helps as well

  7. Wow Matt sounds incredible! Can’t wait to see him perform tonight in Kalamazoo! Matt never disappoints! I’m also fortunate to be able to see him at his October 14th show in Bay City!

  8. I’m loving the Bay City interviews of Matt. Yesterday they posted the article with a different song, and today another song and more of the interview. “This Love Ain’t Meant to Be” has more of a fun, piano-banging vibe than some of his slower, emotional songs. I love the close ups of his hands in action!

  9. ‘Crystal Awareness Week’ continues:

    (01) Pinktober Interview w/Ontheredcarpet.com

    HLs:
    * Release date of her album – mid December (Yay!).
    * All songs written by her except for 3 (so tts like 8-9 originals- I guess her ‘battles’ paid off).
    * She talks about her causes (listen n learn, says she NEEDS to give back. Makes perfect sense to me)
    * MLE says best part of the night is singing w/Crystal (Yep, thats right!)
    * MLE says CB reminds of her when she was young (Awww.. we can totally see that.)

    (02) Girlup interview @DayBreakUSA

    HLs:
*Very nice interview talking about what women in third world countries are deprived off than in the States. Says she can relate to her experiences when she was growing up and gives a nice contrast between them. I think she is the perfect ambassador for such a cause. Way to go Crystal, keep up da good work!

  10. Walsh: ‘Leaked X Factor list is wrong’

Louis Walsh has claimed that the leaked X Factor final 12 list is not accurate.

A list of the acts who have made the cut for the live shows was accidentally published on a TV listings page earlier this week, backing up a rumoured lineup that has been circulating on X Factor forums.

However, speaking on ITV1’s Daybreak this morning, judge Louis Walsh insisted that the leaked names were incorrect. “There’s something on the internet saying these are the finalists. That list is wrong, it’s not the right list,” he said. “I know the final line-up, and that’s not right.”

  11. mid-December release? that will be interesting to see how that affects sales.

looks like Crystal will get similar number of original solo or co-writes as David Cook and Kris Allen did on their debut albums.

  12. Thanks for the info fictitiousreality. Album droping in mid-December with mostly Crystal originals? OK, now I’m getting excited. :)

  13. fictitiousreality, Thanks, enjoyed both video interviews a lot. I agree, Crystal is so much about others, yet there are still those who think she´s arrogant and all about herself???

looks like Crystal will get similar number of original solo or co-writes as David Cook and Kris Allen did on their debut albums.

They only have 1 solo credit. I think Crystal will have a lot more than that, maybe 5-6 times as many.

  14. matthewleonard
Congratulations @KrisAllen and @adamlambert You both are in the football hall of fame. http://twitpic.com/2tnevn

    LOL, cute!

Thanks fictitiousreality (love the name btw), for the Crystal updates and HLs. Yay for a Crystal album yet this year! I hope all falls into place for this and I’m so happy with how her manager is keeping her in the news.

  15. It’s great for Crystal that JIVE forced the issue of the earlier release date. She needs it out around the holidays, to increase her chances of good album sales.

  16. A mid December release will probably result in more sales than a spring release, so the release date is good new :).
I am curious if they will actually let her put several original songs or if it will be more co-writes and how much they would promote her album. I also wonder when her single will be released and for which radio format they will be aiming with it and how well would it do.

  17. It’s great for Crystal that JIVE forced the issue of the earlier release date.

It´s a double edged sword. Hopefully the album won´t suffer much because of it

  18. Boy, Adam did a good job of keeping his “vacation” under wraps from the paps and the fans. Adds to my contention that many celebrities tend to have their locations “leaked” so that pictures will surface and they can have their moments in the gossip rags.

So, what are you saying? That incident on South Beach was all a set-up and Adam wanted the paps there?

    I don’t think so.

Sometimes your vacation just gets ruined. Nobody ever expects the spanish inquisition.

  19. Gotta to add that he sure looks good and well rested!

And tan! :-) He looks so good! I’ve missed him this week! But glad he had a great vacation!

  20. I am curious if they will actually let her put several original songs or if it will be more co-writes and how much they would promote her album. I also wonder when her single will be released and for which radio format they will be aiming with it and how well would it do

I share your curiosity on all counts. Regarding originals or co-writes, I have a strong feeling more of them will be solo credits than co-writes.

  21. A mid December release will probably result in more sales than a spring release, so the release date is good new

Contrary to what is generally believed, Black Friday is not the biggest sales week of the year for albums. Traditionally, it is third. The best two weeks for album sales are the two weeks prior to Christmas. So, Crystal could have very good first week sales:

Two things to keep in mind:
    1) The reason mid-November is when many of the big albums drop is that pretty much all the weeks leading up to Christmas sell a lot of CDs. Being out there for six good weeks is helpful for those old units.

    2) The week 2 to week 1 drops are usually the biggest drops an album will see (currently, in the 70% range for most albums). The week 2 to week 3 drops are in the 40% range. The absolute cratering of album sales in the two weeks after Christmas is astonishing. Combine the two factors and most albums released in mid-December will face some awe inspiring drops. Fans had better brace themselves for that roller coaster ride.

With that said, the sales of singles after Christmas are simply stunning, so I advise both Crystal and Lee to make sure their singles are firmly established by that time. Anybody in the top 30 will likely sell 100K in the week after Christmas alone.

    * All songs written by her except for 3 (so tts like 8-9 originals- I guess her ‘battles’ paid off).

    1) The cynic in me would suggest that those 3 will be the ones released as singles. RCA/Jive seem to be in agreement on that strategy.

    2) How do they know? They don’t pick the final track listing until the album is finished recording. If she is finished recording, release it sooner. They always record more than they put on the album.

  22. With Crystal having the heeby geebies about her release date and insisting that the album needs the extra time…now that the release date has moved back to 2010 everyone in the Crystal camp has a nice “fall back” position if the album isn’t up to snuff. Nice piece of marketing, that.

  23. Seriously, what are major labels waiting for? #SignMattGiraud already!!!! For me, his talent is beyond words. Keep at it, Matt!

  24. Eriko

until Crystal’s CD track list is set and released, we don’t know how many songs she will have solo writing credit on. Just because she’s writing on them doesn’t mean they aren’t co-writes

  25. now that the release date has moved back to 2010 everyone in the Crystal camp has a nice “fall back” position if the album isn’t up to snuff. Nice piece of marketing, that.

    When an album is successful:

    1) The fans of Artist A will say it is because Artist A is brilliant and that they successfully raged war against the label (and changed the face of modern music)

    2) The detractors of Artist A will say it is because the label brought in ringers to produce/write the album and then used payola to get the hits.

    3) Everybody else will just enjoy the album.

If an album is less than successful:

    1) The fans of Artist A will blame the label. The label is clearly run by idiots and poor Artist A didn’t stand a chance because they are so nice. The fans can hardly wait until Artist A escapes that horrible label.

    2) The detractors of Artist A will say it is because Artist A has no talent, the label can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear and even if the label did make mistakes, Artist A should have just stood up for themselves (but they didn’t, because obviously, it was Artist A making those mistakes, not the label).

    3) Everybody else will just wonder, “What ever happened to Artist A”?

So, Crystal doesn’t need a fallback position. Every artist has one naturally built in.

  26. With Crystal having the heeby geebies about her release date and insisting that the album needs the extra time…now that the release date has moved back to 2010 everyone in the Crystal camp has a nice “fall back” position if the album isn’t up to snuff. Nice piece of marketing, that.

It may be your way of thinking, but that doesn´t make it so for others. And even if sales or the quality of the album would be disappointing, how does “marketing” after the fact come into place?

  27. Kirsten, you kind of covered all scenarios :) But most likely 90% plus, will fall into the following 2 categories

    3) Everybody else will just enjoy the album

    3) Everybody else will just wonder, “What ever happened to Artist A”?

Of the 90% plus, hopefully the majority will be in the former camp :)

  28. They only have 1 solo credit. I think Crystal will have a lot more than that, maybe 5-6 times as many.

Hard to say. They may have started out as songs she wrote alone, but the label could very well bring in other proven writers to tweak the songs, in fact this is probably likely. JMO tho, we’ll have to wait & see.

  29. Eriko

until Crystal’s CD track list is set and released, we don’t know how many songs she will have solo writing credit on. Just because she’s writing on them doesn’t mean they aren’t co-writes

I realize that. We already know “Farmers Daughter” has been recorded, so that´s one. I just have a very strong feeling there will be others judging from that video interview. We´ll see, I could of course be totally wrong

  30. 1) The cynic in me would suggest that those 3 will be the ones released as singles. RCA/Jive seem to be in agreement on that strategy.

Hard not to be cynical about it when that exact scenerio played out for both Cook and Allen. Didn’t Kris write like 12 damn songs?

  31. Just based on previous Idol debut albums, if Crystal gets any solo writing credits, she’ll already be ahead of the game. And the more co-writes the better. :)

Of course, knowing Jive, I won’t be at all surprised if the first single turns out to be one of the few songs on the album she will have no hand in writing at all. But we’ll see — maybe they will actually stun me and actually release a debut single written (or at least co-written) by the artist. That would be fantastically amazing if it happens

  32. The cynic in me would suggest that those 3 will be the ones released as singles. RCA/Jive seem to be in agreement on that strategy

One would hope they´d choose according to what songs they consider to best suited for a single, not who wrote it. I don´t know their CD´s well, are people in general surprised or disappointed, which songs were selected as singles?

  33. sr4- WOOOOHOOO! As much as I love Bruno THANK GOD he is ineligible! Go ADAM! I hope he gets nominated! Bieber winning would be a joke. MTV awards or Nickelodeon awards, fine, but Grammys?????

The six finalists for the Adam Lambert Twitpic contest:

    http://www.adamofficial.com/us/news/glam-yourself-twit-pic-contest-finalists-revealed

Wow! Those all look awesome! I remember when the second to last one was being RTed all over my feed. LOL. We had a feeling he’d be a strong contender ;-)

As for Adam for Best New Artist – OMG, my dream! But keeping expectations tempered for now. :-( He’s too often over-looked in favor of less talented people, so we shall see…

  35. My instructor in this music business class I’m taking at UCLA was at the super secret meetings the Grammys held this past weekend to start sorting out committees and possible nominations. He had some interesting stories about these meetings and the way the committees going about how to choose what category an artist or album or song should go in.

It’s great that Adam is mentioned in that Billboard article for Best New Artist, but I have a feeling he’s a longshot to get nominated. There are 5 slots for that category and you figure that Bieber, B.O.B and Drake have 3 of the spots locked up. Then critical darlings Florence & the Machine (my favorite new artist :) ) & Mumford & Sons — I figure that at least one of them will be nominated. That leaves one spot for either SueBo or Adam, and based on worldwide popularity/sales, SueBo has the edge.

I’m rooting for Adam to be nominated, though :) (of course I’d like Kris to be nominated too, but that’s even less likely to happen).

  36. My instructor in this music business class I’m taking at UCLA was at the super secret meetings the Grammys held this past weekend to start sorting out committees and possible nominations. He had some interesting stories about these meetings and the way the committees going about how to choose what category an artist or album or song should go in.

Aren’t you going to share with the rest of the class ? ;)

I wouldn’t rule out Kesha either.

  37. The big question for which single they will release, depends upon what format are they trying for. Are they going for HAC, POP, or Country?

  38. Aren’t you going to share with the rest of the class ?

I wouldn’t rule out Kesha either.

OMG and then I will die a little more inside :-(

  39. 2) How do they know? They don’t pick the final track listing until the album is finished recording. If she is finished recording, release it sooner. They always record more than they put on the album.

    Really good point.

  40. They only have 1 solo credit. I think Crystal will have a lot more than that, maybe 5-6 times as many.

I really doubt she’ll have that many.

  41. Yes, as much as it would be nice for Adam to be nominated, I would be surprised. But to be honest, I think he has a much better shot at getting a nod than SuBo. Her album was all covers so despite her sales, I just don’t think she would get nominated.

  42. Grammy’s would lose whatever credibility they have left (such as it is) if they ever nominated SuBo for BNA. I don’t care how great her sales were. It’s an album full of covers. What’s next? Nominate NOW That’s What I Call Music for Album of the Year?

  43. My predictions

Crystal will probably have more solo writes than we usually see, given 1 is the norm. LOL. And Adam probably won’t be nominated for BNA but might have a shot for a nom for Best Pop Male Vocal for WWFM. Maybe. Given the VMAs, I’m not counting on it.

ETA: to add Pop, I think that’s the category

And SuBo shouldn’t even be considered with horrible covers, despite sales.

  44. As for Adam for Best New Artist – OMG, my dream! But keeping expectations tempered for now. He’s too often over-looked in favor of less talented people, so we shall see…

A nomination would be nice, but realistically his chances of being nominated are not good. So I wouldn’t get my hopes up. I think Carrie will be the only Idol nominated this year for a Grammy.

  45. The Grammys aren’t exactly known for their cutting edge nominations, especially in the 4 major categories. That has been a longtime complaint about the award. So I don’t know if the nominating committee will care about something like if SueBo’s album was all covers

  46. ‘Crystal Awareness Week’ continues:

Thanks for the great information. But I have a request? This goes for everyone.

If you are about to post something dishy in comments, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE either email at mjsbigblog @ gmail.com or tweet me a heads up.

Getting scooped by a rival Idol blog on my own damn stuff makes me twitchy.

    Thanks very much. :).

  47. I think Adam has a shot at Best Pop Vocal Male. I think BNA noms will be B.O.B., Drake, Bieber F & TM and ……Ms. SUSAN BOYLE. Actually I highly doubt she’ll get a nom but it would be pretty funny if she did.

I’m really pulling for some nominations for Fantasia though. Carrie is a lock.

  48. One would hope they´d choose according to what songs they consider to best suited for a single, not who wrote it. I don´t know their CD´s well, are people in general surprised or disappointed, which songs were selected as singles?

Although ideally the most radio-friendly songs should be chosen to be the singles, it is not always the case. There were several cases of fans being disappointed by the singles selections.

  49. So I don’t know if the nominating committee will care about something like if SueBo’s album was all covers

Yes, but didn’t her album get mostly so so reviews? I just don’t think she will get a nod. Wasn’t she recently shut out of a British music awards ceremony?

  50. What’s next? Nominate NOW That’s What I Call Music for Album of the Year?

    No, no, no… Kidz Bop!

  51. Mentions Adam and SuBo for possible Best New Artist.

ARE THEY FEAKIN’ OUT OF THEIR MINDS?!?!?!?!?! SuBo as BNA? This madness must stop. I’m sorry, but that’s like nominating the Jingle Dogs as BNA. Sure, they moved a lot of units and there is some curiosity factor there, but THAT IS NOT ART.

SuBo is a sweet old lady and her cat deserves the most expensive kibble can buy, but the lady is not in any way an Artist. I hope Simon Cowell paid off BB to write that. That would actually give me more confidence in the people working for BB.

That said, I can’t believe how competitive the BNA category will be this year. Often, they have to troll around to fill out the nominees, but there are lots of new artists making a splash this year.

Usually, they try to get a representative sample across genres for the BNA (committees play a role in Grammy nominations). I think Drake pretty much has a lock on the Rap slot and it will be hard not to give Justin Bieber a nod for the Pop slot (the kid is everywhere, has moved boatloads of all sorts of units) and he’ll get the coveted younger crowd to tune in.

Florence and the Machine stand a good chance in the quirky/foreign slot (but some think The Script might sneak in for the band/foreign slot). That leaves the R&B and Country or Rock slots open (not every slot gets a slot every year).

Other top contenders are Neon Trees, B.o.B, Ke$ha (if she can elbow out Bieber) and Janelle Monae. Adam seems to have a lot of support in the industry so you can’t leave him out either (though, it’s tough for Idols. None have been even nominated since Carrie, including Daughtry who made quite a splash during their BNA year).

  52. I’m really pulling for some nominations for Fantasia though. Carrie is a lock

Oh I completely forgot about Fantasia, she certainly should get at least two nominations.

  53. Susan Boyle won’t get a nomination for BNA. Realistically, Drake has a lock on that award anyway. Commercial success and critical acclaim.

I think Drake, B.o.B, Ke$ha, Bieber and Janelle Monae with the Script as an outside chance will get the nominations. Plus there’s usually one BNA nom that comes completely from left field.

  54. I’m sure that TPTB have an understanding with their stable of song-writers that their songs are the ones that will appear on the album. Afterall, more money is made from writing songs than singing them.

  55. I think Adam has a shot at Best Pop Vocal Male

If Adam gets a nom, I suspect that it would be in this category (although some years this category is really weird – lots of older artists). I think he will probably be on the short list and mentioned a lot as a possible BNA nominee, but ultimately will not be nominated.

  56. None have been even nominated since Carrie, including Daughtry who made quite a splash during their BNA year).

Wow, I really thought Daughtry had been nominated for a grammy. Or do you mean just the BNA award?

  57. Are Lee and Cookie performing together?

    LeeDeWyze

#On my way to San Francisco with @thedavidcook, & @nealfingtiemann . Performance tomorrow night, relaxing tonight :) talk to ya soon!
6 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone

  58. Daughtry was nominated for five Grammy awards for their debut album (and won none) but not BNA. Carrie is the only Idol nominated for BNA and she won.

  59. The Script have a very good chance at a nom. Janelle Monae has a very high metacritic score for her album, 91. But she’s manic and terrible live IMO.

I would think after Taylor’s Vocalist award, the Grammys might want to up their cred this year. I think the win will go to someone like Florence.

  60. Kinda excited about Brooke White’s movie. Disappointed that David Cook’s concert next month was canceled (the private one at the FFA convention). Gives him more time to practice his tennis I suppose. I’ll always feel he should have been nominated for best new artist last year – great sales, great tour.

ETA – Wonder what Cookie, NFT, and LeeD are up to??

  61. Carrie is the only Idol nominated for BNA and she won.

and she beat the BNA “curse” (to explain, there is supposedly a BNA “curse” because a lot of winners never had any success again….of course, many, like Carrie, have gone on to be very successful)

  62. Wow, I really thought Daughtry had been nominated for a grammy. Or do you mean just the BNA award?

I just meant the BNA award. It was quite discussed at the time because they received several other nominations that year, but were over-looked for BNA anyway. It’s tough for the Idols in that category.

And by the way, don’t let anybody tell you that it is a cursed award. It may have been at one time (and we’ll ignore the Milli Vanilli disaster), but lately it’s been pretty good at picking BNA’s who went on to do other great things.

  63. many, like Carrie, have gone on to be very successful

Zac Brown Band won last year and just had the biggest debut album this last week (beating out Maroon 5 which won the award in 2005). Other winners include John Legend, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Christine Aguilera, Sheryl Crow and The Beatles.

  64. If Adam gets a nom, I suspect that it would be in this category (although some years this category is really weird – lots of older artists). I think he will probably be on the short list and mentioned a lot as a possible BNA nominee, but ultimately will not be nominated.

This is my opinion as well. For Pop male I’m guessing Mayer, Seal, Buble along with a couple younger artists. Adam is a long shot, but it’s the most likely shot if any.

  65. A lot of so-called “new” artists aren’t going to be eligible for BNA because their albums were released outside the eligibility dates.

  66. Are Lee and Cookie performing together?

    LeeDeWyze

#On my way to San Francisco with @thedavidcook, & @nealfingtiemann . Performance tomorrow night, relaxing tonight talk to ya soon!
6 minutes ago via Twitter for iPhone

Girlygirl, IDK – haven’t seen – but I do see one way to melt a timeline – *chuckle*

    >>thedavidcook @LeeDeWyze you speak truths, good sir. I think. Tomorrow tonight?

Do Lee’s fans have the equivalent of the CNN (Cook News Network) yet? Perhaps one of them has heard mumblings. I only saw Neal’s tweets this morning, w/no explanation, of course.

  67. Best Pop Vocal is one of those categories that has a very wide range of styles that the Grammys feel are “pop”. So that field is usually pretty crowded. I do think it’s the best chance for Adam to get a nomination, though.

  68. David Archuleta is on the cover of Portrait magazine’s October issue! He’s at the top of their “20 Most Beautiful Inside and Out” feature article.

David’s true beauty though lies in his heart. It’s easy to see why David Archuleta ended up both the most nominated and highest vote earner in our poll. When it comes to beauty on the inside, David’s beats the rest. He always takes time for his fans, spending hours at meet & greets just to make sure they know how special they are. That’s impressive in these days of egotistical celebrities.
    […]
David is only nineteen years old, but has already achieved so much in his life. He has used his fame and success to inspire others. He is involved with many philanthropic activities, such as the Do Something organization and “Somos el Mundo” (the Spanish version of “We are the World”), a charity benefit event. David has shown himself to be a truly humble and giving person, who appreciates everything that everyone has to offer and truly appreciates his fans and supporters. He has also written a memoir recently, through which his beautiful soul was able to shine through, and he was able to inspire so many people with his story. His humble, down to earth, and caring attitude is extremely difficult to find nowadays, making him a perfect role model for all people, both young and “not-so-young”.

  69. Adam’s best shot for a nomination, imo, would be best vocal performance (still a long shot, though). BNA is WAY competitive—Drake, BOB, and Bieber are locks. Then there is Kesha (who is also probably a lock), Posner, and Taoi Cruz (probably butchered the spelling).

  70. *SIGH*.

Sounds like you need a back rub, foot massage, a hug or booze!

  71. BNA is WAY competitive—Drake, BOB, and Bieber are locks. Then there is Kesha (who is also probably a lock), Posner, and Taoi Cruz (probably butchered the spelling).

I don’t think so. Like Kirsten said, there’s usually a mix in this one. A group, a country act, a pop act, a rap artist etc. I think kesha/posner/cruz/bieber and Adam are all competing for a pop slot and it’s probably not going to an AI alum.

    I’d go Drake/Pop xxx/Script/Country xxx/Florence ..

  72. Cowell defends new ‘X Factor’ groups

Simon Cowell has defended his decision to have two newly formed groups at the Judges’ Houses stage of The X Factor.

The reality show was criticised by some viewers for sending acts 1 Direction and Belle Amie, who were put together by Cowell and Louis Walsh from rejected solo singers, through to the next stage of the competition over more established acts.

Speaking about the decision, Cowell told the Daily Star: “To be honest, the groups who turned up weren’t good enough. And anyway, The Wanted (currently very popular British boyband) didn’t suddenly walk into each other in a High Street.

“The same for the Spice Girls, Westlife, Jackson Five – someone’s got to be a catalyst. I thought it was fairer to put these singers in a group rather than let them go because they weren’t quite there.”

Umm yeah, Simon. They weren’t quite there?

It looks like all three groups that made the live shows (1 Direction, Belle Amie, FYD) were created by X Factor producers. FYD at the audition stages, the other two in Bootcamp.

I don’t know when the decision was made which judge gets which category, but it seems to me that Simon knew for sure that he will mentor the groups this year and because he was not happy with the groups that signed up, he stole the prettiest boys from the boys category and 4 pretty girls from the girls category. I’m sure Dannii was very surprised to see no pretty boys when her group landed in Australia. LOL Instead, both Cheryl and Dannii got some older contestants, but only one will be chosen for the live shows. And poor Louis ended up with … Uhm.

  73. So my final answer is Drake, Bieber, Script or B.O.B, Countryxxx and Florence. I really hope neither Ke$ha or Posner get nominations.

  74. A post about Crystal is so controversial here isnt it and its not even like a huge social debate kinda of thing like someone being gay (i hrd it was a big thing last year, what do i know i didnt watch last season.).

I know some ppl here would see glass half empty and others glass half full (i promised myself i wudnt resort to that cliche, oh well) for any idol especially Crystal. Right now all I am going to say about her release and its reception is I FRICKIN’ DONT HAVE A CLUE and it doesnt concern or worry me. I dont know when a song will skyrocket to the top of charts if its released on what dates like there is some magic formula to it. I dont know if JIVE is forcing crystal for pushing the dates. All i know for a fact is the album has been pushed back and Crystal is releasing her original songs. That makes me happy simply because Crystal looks happy mentioning it to the interviewer. A happy artist performs better than an unhappy one. To quote CB if you have done your best then you dont have any regrets whatever the outcome.

Moving on, I want to talk about Crystal as a giving person. Its refreshing to see someone care about the dark social issues so strongly and is so well-informed about what shes talking about. Its engaging to see someone giving intelligent answers to difficult questions dealing everyday problems and be so open about it. The thing that strike me most was when she said that she NEEDS to give back after all that she has recieved from friends and strangers to be in the place she is now. THAT is both humility and humanity at best and is such a huge attraction. Someone else here said Crystal has made helping her causes as her mission statement. That seems to be very true and I am very proud of her for taking that stance. I was seriously more excited about that part of her interview than about the album. And she is always putting good word on people who are into the betterment of humanity and mankind. People like melissa, michael franti, ellen, victoria justice and others @girlup. Its just amazing how she has turned this journey into an even better ride with positivity and such hope. I dont know what else to say except peace and to each his own.

Oh right before I forgot congrats to Lee for participating in the Feeding America Hungry Action Month event. Its great to see the idols supporting for stuff like this.

Mj: Sorry dude(or dude-ess, not sure why i said that) didnt know about the email thingy. Man, I dunno how you do it with all the censoring but kudos to you for keeping the peace you are in my good book for doing the little things to make humanity better (and its not an exaggeration, i mean it :) ) I will gladly send the scoop next time. Sorry again.

  75. I thought Florence + TM were eligible last year. Good to know. Hope F+TM get a BNA nom.

  76. Based on this http://bit.ly/dA258F I totally expect Ke$ha to get nominated, but sure hoping based on world wide sales and sold out concert tour that Adam at least gets a nod/nomination!

  77. Do Lee’s fans have the equivalent of the CNN (Cook News Network) yet?

uhh no, Lee won’t tell people when he walks down the side of the road…. let alone anything to do with anything music-wise lol Soo secretive that DeWyze.

  78. some funny tweets showing up on twitter from Lee fans who don’t know that @nealfingtiemann is David Cook’s amazing lead guitarist and good friend, Neal Tiemann

ETA – No one is as secretive as the WTF Cook camp, but the wonderful Cook News Network is pretty darn good at ferreting out cookie crumbs.

  79. And anyway, The Wanted (currently very popular British boyband) didn’t suddenly walk into each other in a High Street.

“The same for the Spice Girls, Westlife, Jackson Five – someone’s got to be a catalyst.

Sometimes, when Simon opens his mouth, he stuns me. While I will agree that the members of the Jackson 5 didn’t actually suddenly walk into each other in High Street, I would argue that given the fact that they all happened to live in the same house with the same parents, what actually happened is at least roughly equivalent.

Or have I missed some crucial bit of Michael Jackson tragedy story and the boys he thought were his brothers were actually some random kids sent over from central casting?

Of course, this is from the dude who wonders why anybody would sing a song about birds when Carly sang “Blackbird” (that night he was probably also wondering why they were having a theme night devoted to bugs), had never heard of “Heart” and called a song that was currently in the top 10 “non-commercial” when Matt sang it (“You Found Me” would go on to be certified double platinum for The Fray), so he probably does think the Jackson 5 were 5 random kids (assuming he even knows they were kids).

  80. I don’t follow him very closely, but from what I have seen, I thought Lee has been pretty chatty on twitter and in his interviews. Has he clammed up recently? He doesn’t seem anywhere as secretive as David Cook or Kris Allen — you pretty much have to use a crowbar to drag any sort of info out of either of those guys. But if Lee has become really secretive, then some of his most hardcore fans need to sharpen up their ninja research skills to dig upinfo — something that has worked at times with Cookie and Kris… :)

  81. Someone else here said Crystal has made helping her causes as her mission statement.

    That would be me.

I can’t wait for Crystal’s cd. Nice xmas present for her fans.

  82. A post about Crystal is so controversial here isnt it and its not even like a huge social debate kinda of thing like someone being gay (i hrd it was a big thing last year, what do i know i didnt watch last season.).

For what its worth… I think Lee and Crystal have gotten off easier than many (not all) previous idols from previous seasons. Some of them have been skewered and all of them are examined from all angles. Crystal is no special case.

  83. I don’t know why everyone assumes Bieber is a shoo in for a Grammy nod. I think Kesha is more of a shoo in than Bieber.

  84. Bieber is got to be a lock for a Grammy. Even other artists bring him up in interviews because they understand how popular he is

  85. I don’t see how Kesha is not nominated. Wasn’t she the big break-out pop artist this year? And didn’t Tik Tok break some Billboard record? I also think Posner has to be a lock for a pop vocal nom.

I think Crystal worked out a great compromise on her album release date. She gets a few more week,s but doesn’t miss out on the big pre and post-Christmas sales.

  86. My prediction for BNA

Drake, B.O.B, Mumford and Sons, The Script, Nicki Minaj

    Winner: Nicki Minaj

  87. Again, I don’t think Ke$ha is eligible for BNA. There’s no way the Billboard article wouldn’t have mentioned her if she was eligible.

  88. I am pretty sure all of the Idols have causes and charities they support. They all seem to select organizations that they hold close to their hearts. It’s a great way for them to use their celebrity to bring some attention to organizations needing the support. So a big thank you to the Idols and their fans who provide help in various ways, including monetary donations.

  89. From their twitter:
This just in @DavidArchie aka Idol’s David Archuleta is performing on @wendyshow Thurs. http://www.wendyshow.com

    Thursday line up:
“Extreme Makeover’s” Ty Pennington, “Idol’s” David Archuleta & soap star Deidre Hall.

“Plus, “Idol’s” David Archuleta performs his new song, “Elevator” off his new album, “The Other Side of Down.””

  90. Kesha is eligible for BNA, but I think Tik Tok as a song is not, it’s too old. Animal came out in January.

Nicki Minaj is not eligible, according to that Billboard article.

  91. gangreen29

I think the Billboard article said Nicki Minaj wasn’t eligible. She’ll be eligible next year…

  92. Nicki Minaj is not eligible, according to that Billboard article.

Oops that’s what I get for just skimming the article.

Replace her with Ke$ha then in my predictions.

Dammit I suck, girylgirl just saw your post about Ke$ha not being eligible. Never mind, I give up on these predictions lol

  93. The whole who can be nominated for BNA is very confusing to me. I understand the problem with some artists who’s releases are outside the time frame, but artists have been nominated before after having several albums already out, right? But wasn’t Lady Gaga not eligible because she released music the previous year to the one she could have been eligible for?

  94. yeah, but I’m not positive Ke$ha isn’t eligible :)

Here’s article about the Grammys changing the rules on eligibility (probably due to the Lady GaGa fiasco)

“The rules previously stipulated that if an artist was ever nominated for a Grammy, they were then not eligible to compete for Best New Artist, even if they were only nominated as a featured artist on someone else’s track. Now, artists can be eligible as long as they have never actually won a Grammy, and if they hadn’t released a full album prior to the year they are considered a new artist.”

Adam’s best shot for a nomination, imo, would be best vocal performance (still a long shot, though).

Not too familiar with Grammy categories, but didn’t realize there are specific “vocal performance” categories. And if so, UGH, because him not getting a nod in a category like that would be a travesty. And if someone like Posner gets it instead, double UGH. (Sorry, not much respect for a lot of pop acts today. I’ve heard/seen Adam live, and I’ve heard/seen some of these other people live, and many of them are laughably bad).

  96. Mary102

Oh yeah, there are a zillion different Grammy categories, Best Male Vocal, Pop, Best Female Vocal, Pop, Best Duo or Group Vocal, Pop (with these same categories being in country, r&b, rap genres (and probably other genres as well) ) being just a small sample

  97. I think Drake and Janelle Monae are locks for BNA. I don’t know about Kesha. I can’t imagine she’s really seen as a creative/vocal force by her peers. I feel almost the same about B.O.B. I think hes more respect than Kesha but I don’t know if he’s enough of a critical darling. I don’t know about Forence…maybe. I think Janelle has a better shot at the “critics love you but you don’t sell tons” shot. Mumford and Sons seems like a safer bet. Adam could sneak in there, but its a long shot.

  98. Oh yeah, there are a zillion different Grammy categories, Best Male Vocal, Pop, Best Female Vocal, Pop, Best Duo or Group Vocal, Pop (with these same categories being in country, r&b, rap genres (and probably other geres as well) ) beig just a small sample

I pulled up some of the winners from past years… quite a few surprised me. I don’t watch or take much stock in these industry awards any more for a variety of reasons.

  99. girlygirl– thanks. Well, that’s good to know that maybe SOME day he’ll get a nod. That’s my dream for him, since he deserves it so much! We shall see though, since I’ve learned that the best and most deserving very rarely seem to win (or even get nominated) for these things.

Tinawina – that’s a good point. That whole “respect of peers” thing is pretty big. Definitely a factor with the academy award and emmy nominations, in terms of who is popular and beloved, or getting sympathy votes or what have you – so that would play a big factor. Also, I agree that it’s usually spread out more, so having a lot of young pop acts that WE may be really familiar with (B.O.B., Kesha) is probably not how it’s actually gonna break down.

  101. Vocal recording is really anything non-instrumental that has singing. Rap has it’s own category. Doesn’t really mean you are good singer. See Swift, Taylor.

  102. David Archuleta has his very own Official iPhone App featuring
news, music, videos & more! With it you can watch out for exclusive contests and messages from David. Be sure to download the app to get updates from David Archuleta on your phone like never before!

It’s available in English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese,
Korean, Portuguese, Russian, & Spanish. And it’s FREE!

  103. I got an email about the following a couple of days ago, so I apologize if it’s already been covered, but there’s going to be a tour in Canada of something called Ballroom With A Twist, and David Hernandez and Vonzell Solomon will be in it: http://www.ballroomwithatwist.com/

  104. Kris doesn’t have a concert tomorrow, but he’ll still be with the soldiers

Kris Allen is having lunch with wounded warriors at the USO Warrior Center October 2, 11am. http://bit.ly/93GVzS

  105. Just thought I would put my 2cents in on the Grammys.

Unfortunatly I don’t think Adam will even get a nomination this year…probably not even for the AMA’s. There are just to many big names with new material out there this year.

  106. I think Adam will be nominated for an Grammy. I have many reason’s for my thoughts but I am going to keep them to myself as some are political and maybe too controversial for some. The Grammy’s tend to pick singers for their awards. As popular as Beiber is I don’t think he will be nominated for any Grammy. There have been many artist who were very popular and who won many popularity music awards but never were nominated for a Grammy. (Jonas Brothers) Adam I think has the best shot at getting a nomination even from being an AI alum. I predict he will follow in the footsteps of Carrie Underwood and be nominated for BNA. Winning is another issue as Florence and the Machine (right?) has a big shot at this as it seems like they almost came at of no where and are very different. Grammy’s like that….Amy Winehouse, Adele, Muse…which also leads me to again think this give Adam another reason at getting a nom.

Susan Boyle will not be nominated IMHO the industry will not shoot themselves in the foot.

I also hope that Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, and Kelly Clarkson ( For Already Gone ) get nomination and wins.

I am indifferent on Fantasia noms. Her whole Suicide mishmosh still has me turned off to her. If she does good for her and if not Meh

Kris Allen I think has an outside chance at a nomination at a Christian category award for LLWD it did very will on the Christian charts. I would be torn on this though as I would love Kris to be nominated, on the other-hand I don’t think getting a nomination in the Christian category would be what he would want for himself. (Not at this time) Since he was going for a rock/pop sound. Thank God this is all just my humble opinion and most likely not a possibility. :-)

  107. Just the fact that Adam’s name was thrown in there, I’m hopeful. He is still on the musicbiz radar even if it’s a tiny blip. For now, I’ll screencapped that Billboard article and add it to my Adam Shrine.

  108. The Grammy’s tend to pick singers for their awards.

Taylor Swift received 8 nominations last year, and Katy Perry had one for Best Female Pop vocal for “Hot and Cold.” I think the Grammy’s do tend to go with who’s popular, which is why they have so many categories.

  109. Haha I can just picture Simon Cowell having a big old hissy fit if Subo doesn’t get nominated hehehe

  110. Taylor Swift received 8 nominations last year, and Katy Perry had one for Best Female Pop vocal for “Hot and Cold.” I think the Grammy’s do tend to go with who’s popular, which is why they have so many categories.

The BNA Grammy nominees are hard to predict. I think there are only two sure bets — Drake and Justin Bieber. There is almost always one UK act so I would bet on Florence & the Machine. I think the other two slots are wide open. There is usually a country nominee but there is not strong new country act this year.

I was certain that Zac Brown band would be nominated for the BNA last year and pretty sure they would win. I also guessed MGMT would be on the list. But I would never have picked the remaining three nominees: Keri Hilson, MGMT, Silversun Pickups, The Ting Tings.

Adam is a real longshot for a nomination — but a mention in this article is a sign that he was mentioned and so was SuBo.

I think Adam has a real shot of being nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for WWFM. I do not think he can win.

Regarding the AMAs — I put the likelihood of Adam getting even an AMA nomination at 0%. And he is in Europe when it happens so he couldn’t be on the show.

I do not think there is a category for Christian Song. There are Gospel Categories, but no Grammy for Christian Song. Unless it is a new category not on the general ballot. But I doubt it.

And the Inspirational song category was dropped in the 80’s — it was really for church music, that was not Gospel.

  112. @ozarko-thanks for the David A. link.I LOVE the cover photo of him.He is a natural beauty. And yes, def.a relaxing ,warm person to enjoy. He harkens back to old-school,artists like Anne Murray-where you could breath easy, and their personality, and singing was very relaxing…

  113. Taylor Swift received 8 nominations last year, and Katy Perry had one for Best Female Pop vocal for “Hot and Cold.” I think the Grammy’s do tend to go with who’s popular, which is why they have so many categories

I think they were nominated more because they are both good song writers not because they are popular. I am not saying that popular doesn’t play a part or that popular artist are not nominated but that if they don’t have something tangible that they are outstanding at they won’t be. IMHO. 2006 High School Musical album was the best selling album of the year but no noms for it or anyone who sung on it.Spice Girls one of the best selling artist of all time not one nomination and they sang original music. Backstreet Boys no noms and I liked them and think they should have at least gotten nomination. Anyway there are always exceptions but my feeling is more times then not Grammy goes with the singer/writer then just the popular. For all her talent there are at least 5 other artist who sing better then Susan Boyle and with original music. Adam being one of them. :-) but this is my humble opinion.

Anyway I am just hoping Adam gets nominated and think he has a very good chance at least better then I think other artist that have been mentioned as contenders for the award. This will be good for Idol too if he does get nominated.

  114. I do not think there is a category for Christian Song. There are Gospel Categories, but no Grammy for Christian Song. Unless it is a new category not on the general ballot. But I doubt it.

Your probably right Q3 I thought there might be a category for this because many of the Grammy awards we don’t even get to see on the telecast. It was years before I knew there were as many sub categories as there are. I was just hoping and Yes….. reaching  .

  115. I agree with those that say that Adam’s Best shot of getting a Grammy nomination is for Best Vocal Performance, Male for WWFM.

Maybe Fantasia can get some nods in the R&B categories.like in “Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “Bittersweet”. With the way her album has been selling so far she might be able to get a nomination for Best R&B album. Her album has gotten some good reviews as well.

I don’t like Justin Bieber as an artist, but I could see him getting nominated for Best New Artist. The Jonas Brothers got nominated in that category, maybe Justin might as well.

  116. There is no general vocal performance categories for the Grammys. It is by genre. Adam would be in the Pop genre. There are two possible categories for Adam there…

    Best Male Pop Vocal Performance
    Best Pop Vocal Album

The Male Pop Vocal Performance awards tend to go to very mainstream artists – so Adam is a stretch in the category. But he will not get a Rock Vocal nomination.

2010 Best Male Pop Vocal Performance

Winner “Make It Mine” performed by Jason Mraz
“This Time” performed by John Legend
    “Love You” performed by Maxwell
“If You Don’t Know Me by Now” performed by Seal
“All About the Love Again” performed by Stevie Wonder

The Pop Album Vocal award is one of the most competitive categories in the Grammys. I think Adam has no chance for even a nomination:

    2010 Best Pop Vocal Album
Winner The E.N.D. by Black Eyed Peas
    Breakthrough by Colbie Caillat
All I Ever Wanted by Kelly Clarkson
    The Fray by The Fray
    Funhouse by Pink

ETA: Fantasia should get a R&B nomination because the album is really good but very, very competitive category. I think Carrie should get a couple nominations and could win. And Bieber is almost certain to be nominated for BNA, but Drake is the favorite. Also they will nominate Glee for best compilation album or some other award because they can’t ignore the Glee sales.

  117. The Jonas Brothers got nominated in that category, maybe Justin might as well.

Wow I didn’t know that……oops….. well then Beiber does stand a decent chance at getting at least nominated. I doubt he will win but hey Beside Kelly and Carrie I have not gotten the Idol winners right either. Don’t look to me for if you’re placing a bet. ha ha ha Still hope and think Adam stands a chance a BNA

Thanks for the info on Jonas Bro’s thought they had never been nominated for any Grammy. I now see that BNA was the lone nom.

ETA just want to point out that at the time of Carrie Underwood nomination and then eventual win for BNA no on would have guessed she would be nominated or win. All the same reason were given back at that time that are now being given for Adam. Not saying it will all turn out the same way I am saying there is no set rule when it comes to the BNA award. It is the one award that is unpredictable as to who gets nominated or wins. Or better to say its the one awards that is not etched to stone. :-)

ETA …oh I see Q3 last post and I guess I am so clueless (after reading her post I think she is right) …I had thought the one award show that Adam really stood a good chance at was Grammy’s. I always thought the Grammy’s leaned toward the vocals/performance of an artist rather then the Popularity or Politics of one, like many of the other awards shows appear to be. IMHO Adam not being even nominated in some pop category is a shame and a travesty. It looks like with such a lack of pure Pop male vocalist that the Pop category usually looks like a repeat of the R&B or Rock genre’s. Adam should be the front runner in the pop male vocalist category but it will probably go to one of the R&B guys who didn’t win to one of the Rock guys who lost out or maybe even the winners of those respective categories. Can Eminem be nominated in the Pop male vocalist category too?

Oh well……..There is the 2nd leg of the Glam Nation Tour that he is taking around the world. :-) …..and he is buying a car when he gets home ( MAZZARATI I believe) and most likely he will buy a home. so he has all that going for him. ;-) …and a lot more can happen from now until the nominations in December!

ETA #4-Thanks to everyone who shared there viewpoint or helped correct any information I may have been wrong or misinformed about in regards to the Grammy article. Even though I am not as optimistic for Adam’s chances (which does make me sad) as I was originally…..I am inspired by the courteousness of the the shared information. Thank you

I think that BNA is an interesting award. Because sometimes there will be people that will win, that will go on and have really good careers in music (Like The Beatles, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Carrie), Toni Braxton also went on to have a lot of success after winning this award as well. And Sheryl Crow has had a nice career in music too

But there are some people that will win and not really go on and do anything really successful outside of the album that got them attention ( Like Paula Cole, Arrested Development, etc..)

I think it’s interesting to see/learn who has won that award and how their careers have been since winning it.

Everyone knew Carrie would be nominated for and win Best New Artist. That was a lock.

  120. From the little that I know about X-Factor, it’s far more contrived than other talent competitions. There have been past contestants who have been unhappy with the “mentoring” on that show. As for Simon, he gave an interview to Anderson Cooper where he stated as an analogy that to the music industry, he would rather own McDonald’s than a 3-Star Michelin restaurant. For Simon, it’s all about $$$, not artistry.

Although I’m hoping that Adam receives a Grammy nomination, I doubt that will happen.

Well I don’t remember it that way I remember a lot of talk to the contrary. I think I lot of Corinne Bailey Rae fans and supporters would disagree with you but I am glad it turned out the way it did. :-)

According to this MTV article she wasn’t the front runner

So I don’t see that she was a lock but again glad she did win :-) and I was more relating the situation to what people are saying now about Adam. At the time Carrie being an Idol contestant was brought up as something that would hurt her chances too but this is going in circles so I concede. ;-)

Her win wasn’t a sure thing, but her nomination was definitely a lock. She had the best selling album of the Billboard year (High School Musical for calendar year I think), and big hype in Country with multi-week no.1 hit. Made it easy for Grammy to fill up the country slot in BNA nominations.
