Winnie: Toronto Review

Hudson, in particular, deserves better. Her one-on-one scenes with Howard have pathos, but as Winnie’s actions grow more questionable, the film can’t decide whether she’s a martyr or a pariah, and the performance doesn’t answer that question. Without insightful dialogue, Hudson’s expressions of uncompromising defiance, wounded dignity or booze-soaked bitterness veer into cliché. And both Hudson and Howard are done no favors by ropey latex work as their characters age.

‘The X-Factor’ review: And did we miss Simon Cowell?

Watching, in recent weeks, as Simon Cowell explained that “The X-Factor” is a completely different show than “American Idol” was a bit like watching Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada” explain to her neophyte assistant why two turquoise belts of similar width and style represent utterly distinct looks. Um, OK, if you say so, Miranda.

X Factor brings back the Pepsi vs. Coke cola wars

Clearly, the cola wars are bubbling over to the reality TV talent show wars. Pepsi is circling back to its musical marketing roots by sponsoring X Factor, while Coke is sticking with its sponsorship of reigning champ American Idol for an 11th consecutive season.

When X Factor airs tonight on Fox, Pepsi will broadcast 60-second and 30-second ads reminiscent of its celebrity-laden spots from the 1990s. The ads feature footage of superstars from past Pepsi ads, including Jackson, Britney Spears, Kanye West, Mariah Carey and even Ray Charles.

Popularity May Have Doomed Chinese TV Talent Show

BEIJING — In the end, it was not the overabundance of sequins or the cringe-worthy ballads that doomed “Super Girl, ” one of China’s most popular televised talent extravaganzas.

When government censors pulled the plug on the show after its season finale on Friday night, they claimed that the producers had simply let the program warble on too long.

In confirming the yearlong suspension, a spokesman for the company that created the “American Idol” knockoff expressed contrition for having let the show repeatedly exceed a state-imposed 90-minute limit on talent competitions, which government mandarins have variously described as “vulgar, ” “manipulative” and “poison for our youth.”

‘Glee’s’ Darren Criss Talks Broadway, Blaine & Kurt, Debut Album

It would seem that Blaine is transferring to McKinley High. How has the dynamic changed for you — now working full time with the “Glee” club instead of the Warblers 24/7?

Oh man, that question completely undermined the humor of my last answer. So that alone definitely changed my dynamic during this interview. But as for playing Blaine, whether or not I show up at work at Dalton or at McKinley — I’m in a very lucky position, whereby I genuinely enjoy the people I get to work with in both places. I’m close with the Warblers, and I love the McKinley kids… except ONE. One who I can’t stand. And we’ll never know who I’m talking about… or will we? dun dun DUN…
