Scotty McCreery Says His ‘Clear as Day’ Songs Had to Pass the ‘Mama Crying Test’

Scotty McCreery had a reliable barometer to determine if a song was good enough to make his new ‘Clear as Day’ album: his mom. In an interview with Dan Van Media, the ‘American Idol’ winner says Judy McCreery was instrumental in determining which of the more emotional tracks made the cut.

“Mama cried on a couple of them so we told all the guys to label them, ” McCreery explains. “When they sent me songs and demos I would email them back and say, ‘Well, it passed the Mama crying test so it must be a good one.’”

‘X Factor’ puts Simon Cowell in edgier setting

America will find out starting Wednesday, when Fox’s premiere week is dominated by four hours of The X Factor, a big, brassy singing competition owned and operated by the former American Idol judge. Reuniting the genre’s biggest star, Cowell, with Idol foil Paula Abdul, the show (Wednesday and Thursday, 8 p.m. ET/PT) trades on the public’s affection for the original, even as it tries to distinguish itself amid an increasingly crowded field of singing contests.

It’s unlikely the new entry will transform pop culture the way Idol has done. Idol has finished No. 1 in prime-time TV ratings for the past eight years, turning Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and others into recording stars, spawning multiple music competitions on TV and making Cowell, among others, a household name.

Carrie Underwood Included on List of the Most Dangerous Celebrities in Cyberspace

Carrie Underwood ranks No. 51 on a recent list of the most dangerous celebrities on the internet. The study looks at what famous names cyber-criminals use to lure people to sites containing malicious software. Victoria’s Secret model Heidi Klum beat out last year’s most dangerous celeb, Cameron Diaz, to lead this year’s pack of McAfee’s Most Dangerous Celebrities.

Ironically, Underwood is known for not making use of some of the social media platforms other stars invest time in. She doesn’t have a Twitter account, so if you think you’ve been following the ‘Before He Cheats’ singer there, well … that’s why she’s on the list. She is the only country star on the list, now in its fifth year.

InDepth InterView: Kara DioGuardi Talks CHICAGO, BOOK OF MORMON, AMERICAN IDOL, GLEE & More!

PC: What does it feel like to see one of your songs show up in a theatrical context – like many have already on GLEE?

KD: I absolutely love it! Are you kidding? I mean, to be a part of that show is incredible. You are reaching a new generation of kids in the process, too.

PC: Totally.

KD: Especially when they bring back one of my older songs – like “Taking Chances” was on one season and it was a few years since it had been released. So, it was like, “Oh, my God! A new life for ‘Taking Chances’!”
