Kris Allen making most of ‘Idol’ opportunity

Kris Allen says that when he won Season 8 of “American Idol” over perceived-favorite Adam Lambert in 2009, he wasn’t guaranteed a career.

“I think what ‘American Idol’ does is gives you the opportunity to have a music career, ” Allen says in a recent telephone interview from Miami.

Does It Really Matter If Talent Shows Are Auto-Tuned?

Honestly, the idea of a singing competition kind of seems quaint and even a little archaic in 2010. After all, this is an age when most pop stars dominating the charts depend on studio trickery to make decent-sounding albums and on lip-synching to pull off decent concerts. Even megastar Kanye West released an entire Auto-Tuned album, 808’s & Heartbreak, that sounded like a spoken-word CD by Stephen Hawking, and one pop star, T-Pain, has built a multimillion-dollar empire (including an Auto-Tune-themed iPhone app) out of not being able to sing and not even trying to convince anyone that he can.

Critic’s Notebook: ‘Dancing With the Stars’ looks for buzz with its new lineup

The big news, of course is Bristol Palin, daughter of former Alaska governor, former vice presidential candidate and current Fox News commentator Sarah Palin. Upon first glance, Bristol does not possess even the slightest, most cobwebby version of stardom (not to mention any hint of hidden dance talent). But if you squint hard enough at the great messy blur that passes for culture these days, if you stop trying to force people into your close-minded retro categories (like a trained actor and guy who just happens to land on a reality show), if you just surrender to the new system of socio-politainment, you will realize that she has been starring in her own very high-profile reality series for a few years. Which means Bristol Palin actually outranks Audrina Patridge and The Situation in terms of viewership and buzzability.

Ready, OK!: Celebs Prepare to Hit It on ‘Dancing with the Stars’

“Dancing with the Stars” cast members from seasons past and present boogied on over to OK! Magazine’s fifth anniversary party in Hollywood on Wednesday night. They gushed about the ballroom blitz that is about to heat up the dance floor in just a few short weeks.

Partnerships were announced Wednesday morning. With the secret now out in the open, Corky Ballas and Tony Dovolani had nothing but wonderful things to say about their leading ladies. Corky called Florence Henderson “America’s beautiful mom.”

  1. That McCall’s article was very Kris. Nicely done. Though I am with Kris, I hope the press moves beyond Idol with him. I still think in the long run he will do well. He is 25 years old. He has time. And I also like what he said about being happy to be where he is for a new artist. I like that both he and Adam are just so gracious to have the opportunity to be doing what they love.

  2. Good article about Kris except the fact that the first single LLWD from his debut album went platinum and sold over 1.5m should have been included also! Significant accomplishment that should not be omitted when writing about Kris!

  3. I think Kris is really working hard to forge his music career and doing a great job of it. He could have disappeared off the charts and not be opening for more popular music acts had he sat back on his winning laurels and expected the world to come to him. He’s smart and courageous and hard working.

However, Kris’s continual use of the world “we” for “I” in the McCall.com article kinda creeped me out a little.

  4. It looks like Cook & Co. had a late idea for a new song. Here’s a series of tweets from the last few days.

Gonna hang with the bro for a bit, then do some writing with the boys. Have a great night, all! 5:39 PM Aug 26th

I’m back in the saddle again… And by saddle, I mean the studio. And by back, I mean recording. And by again, I mean…well… Again. 3:25 PM Aug 29th

Nothing beats listening to a finished demo of a new song. about 11 hours ago

The question of the day, will this Cook & band co-write make the record?

  5. However, Kris’s continual use of the world “we” for “I” in the McCall.com article kinda creeped me out a little.

I think that was deliberate. KA, like DC, considers the band to be integral to the music making process, although KAB and Cook’s Anthemic have differed somewhat in how they present themselves. So when he says “we” want this record to be good, he means that the band will have input in the process.

As a lot of KA fans seem to have embraced the band, and as Allen certainly has himself, this seems like a good thing.

  6. Poohbear

Agree with what you said about Kris working so hard on his career and not expecting it to be handed to him. I liked what he said about mixing things up. When he does a cover his ability to forget the song as to how it sounds and after putting different chords and emotion into it he can hear it in his mind and then plays it different. Sounds like that is a gift he has and hopefully will carry him far.

  7. Kris has used “we” for “I” since the idol days, not really a recent development. Really liked the article, glad Moser wasn’t his “usual” self.

ETA: Kris’s fans know him better than I do, so he must mean his band now. I just remember lots of interviews early on where he used “we” a lot. I hope his band gets to play on his record, that would be cool!

  8. As a lot of KA fans seem to have embraced the band, and as Allen certainly has himself, this seems like a good thing.

You are right on the mark. girlygirl has more insight but Kris has expressed his intent to have KAB involved with his next record. Kris has been writing alone and with Cale but Torres also has written music on his own and with his own band. So maybe there could be a chance of a song collaboration with Torres.

  9. I’m confused by Crystal’s tweet. Is she going to be playing tonight, or is she simply going to watch this Brian Walker person play?

As to kris, he says “we” because he considers his band very important in his career. He has said several times that he wants the band to stay together for a long time and that the plan is for them to all record on the next album

  10. That Lyndsey Parker article was spot on. Couldn’t agree with her more:

    Does it even matter?

Actually, YES. Yes, it DOES matter. It does to me, at least.

Look, some of my favorite, most iconic singers of the modern era (Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Marianne Faithfull, Leonard Cohen, Robert Smith, Madonna, John Lydon, Kurt Cobain) have possessed extremely limited voices. They’re all proof that other factors–like charisma, stage presence, creativity, songwriting ability, and an overall cool and unique image–are often as important, or even more important, than being able to hit a high C. Not everyone has to sound like “X Factor” diva Leona Lewis. But in those artists’ cases, I always knew, for better or worse, what they really sounded like. And I want to know what the talent show contestants I’m voting for really sound like, too

    .

  11. Oh I was going to say Crystal is hitting the ground running, but now I see it may just be to watch someone else. Thanks for pointing that out girlygirl. Perhaps he’s a friend and will invite her up on stage?

So nice to see a few articles about Kris here. :D I agree he’s working hard and he means his band when he says ‘we’.

  12. I’m confused by Crystal’s tweet. Is she going to be playing tonight, or is she simply going to watch this Brian Walker person play?

Looks like Crystal is a special guest. I would think she would be working on her album.

  13. Good article about Kris except the fact that the first single LLWD from his debut album went platinum and sold over 1.5m should have been included also! Significant accomplishment that should not be omitted when writing about Kris!

Also, the writer said LLWD was top 10 on HAC. But it went Top 10 in other formats, as well.

  14. Last night was the final night to get in donations toward Stand Up to Cancer’s team challenge. Just as in the previous challenge two years ago, Archie’s team “Crush Kid’s Cancer-David Archuleta’s Angels” came out on top! It was a very close race to the finish. In the end, only $549 separated 1st from 2nd place. Here is a screen capture of the final standings:

Who excited for the @KrisAllen show this evening. Only a few tickets left!

  16. Brian Walker has been taking care of little Tony this summer while Crystal was on tour. He’s the one who brought Tony to a few of the shows to see Crystal perform.

  17. Looks like Crystal is a special guest. I would think she would be working on her album.

I read somewhere that Lee was taking a few days off (maybe?). Perhaps this is her way of taking a little time off. ;)

  18. EEEEEE! There’s confirmation Carrie’s going to be on the Loretta Lynn tribute album due out November 9th!!

    link

Country music icon Loretta Lynn is about to get the full-blown tribute-album treatment. In honor of of her 50th career anniversary, a diverse group of artists has contributed tracks for the November 9 album release of Coal Miner’s Daughter: A Tribute to Loretta Lynn. The artists, personally chosen by Lynn, include (in alphabetical order) Sheryl Crow, Steve Earle, Faith Hill, Alan Jackson, Kid Rock, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Allison Moorer, Paramore, Reba, Carrie Underwood, The White Stripes, Lucinda Williams, Gretchen Wilson, and Lee Ann Womack.

I’m so happy they got alt country acts plus some of the best mainstream country acts on this album. I can’t wait to pick it up.

  19. I read somewhere that Lee was taking a few days off (maybe?). Perhaps this is her way of taking a little time off. ;)

Every year they take a day or 2 off after the tour, don’t they? She has to meet up with dude to pick up her son anyway, maybe she decided to jump on stage and do a song with him while she was there.

  20. I’m just sayin’ I’m impressed that Crystal is doing what she’s doing tonight. I’m sure it will almost be relaxing for her.

  21. I’m just sayin’ I’m impressed that Crystal is doing what she’s doing tonight. I’m sure it will almost be relaxing for her.

I’m agreeing with you. Just speculating on how it happened… did you think I was challenging you or something?

  22. Online communication…no, I didn’t think you were challenging me, I just wanted to be clear about where I was coming from. :D Sorry for the misunderstanding and happy we agree.

  23. Archie’s team “Crush Kid’s Cancer-David Archuleta’s Angels” came out on top!

David’s reaction after learning the news from twittering fans:

What???? Really??? No way that is amazing!!!

  24. Online communication…no, I didn’t think you were challenging me, I just wanted to be clear about where I was coming from. :D Sorry for the misunderstanding and happy we agree.

Oh no problem! Sorry I misread you. :)

  25. The question of the day, will this Cook & band co-write make the record?

Wordnerdarchie – your question of the day is one I’d really like to see answered soon, especially since that was the question David was asking on August 20th.

    >>Having fun, writing with @nealfingtiemann and @andyskib. cool idea. will it come to fruition? time will tell.
9:55 PM Aug 20th via web

Eleven days from the idea to the demo – that’s quick enough! If they are that enthused, I double want to hear it.

  26. Kudos to Archie’s Angels for raising money to Crush Kids Cancer. Took the challenge to StandUpToCancer. David is always so thrilled that his fans show such willingness to help others. Some of our favourite memories is not only helping but seeing David’s reaction.

  27. Great news that Jordin’s hip is better and that she’s returning to In the Heights tonight. Unfortunate that she had to miss 4 performances plus a charity event.

BTW, here is a tweet from Jordin yesterday:

Just had a very exciting call. So many amazing things are happening. I cant wait to share them with you!! :D

I suppose this could mean anything. But, aren’t they getting close to finalizing casting for filming In the Heights, starting next spring? I read that principal roles probably won’t require much dancing in the film version. Just a thought.

  28. Tripp – Just checked on the ticket situation for tonite at The State Theatre. There are only 77 tickets left out of 571 so that’s great for Kris!

  29. I’m excited about the Lacey Brown news! Hopefully she finds something there. I still love her voice and think she could really do some awesome things…country would be a great route for her too. Good luck Lacey!!

  30. I’m confused by Crystal’s tweet. Is she going to be playing tonight, or is she simply going to watch this Brian Walker person play?

I would bet my arm and my house that Crystal ends up on stage at some point during the set. That’s what I took from her tweet.

  31. Not sure if anyone else has posted this video here, but you gotta check it out. This is funny as shit!! I literally LAUGHED OUT LOUD!!

Posted in SEVERAL places yesterday. I guess you took the day off from blogging? ;).

  32. It looks like Lee just rolled out of bed in that photoshoot. :) From the snippet, they’re going minimalist, no surprise there. These grp just don’t know how to present themselves visually (w/ the exception of Siobhan).

  33. Posted in SEVERAL places yesterday. I guess you took the day off from blogging? ;) .

Damn, did I forget to send you my Time Off Request Form?

  34. I love those articles on Kris.Me and the husband is 45 min. Away to State PA to see Kris, super excited but trying to stay awake after only getting 2 hrs of sleep.

  35. EW Music Mix: Carrie Underwood: Why Do The CMAs Keep Snubbing Her For Entertainer Of The Year?

The bigger issue here is the continued absence of Underwood from the CMA EOTY category, given the ginormous success she’s enjoyed in the four years since Jesus took her wheel — and especially given the fact that the CMAs have no problem with Underwood co-hosting their awards show. Three times. With a dress budget running into the billions. And yet she’s never once been nominated for Entertainer. What the what? After the jump, we’ll break down the situation.

I’m biased because I’m a fan but this is IMO an awesome and comprehensive article questioning why Carrie hasn’t have been nominated for CMA Entertainer Of The Year yet.

  36. I wish Lacey the best of luck with her career. I thought she would be in the TOP 10.

  37. I like the article about Kris. And it does point out that he’s doing well for a new artist. I’d say a platinum single and opening for major acts is a pretty good start. Actually, I think most new artists start with having a single do well before the album does.

  38. The question of the day, will this Cook & band co-write make the record?

I hope so. And also, I don’t know how close the album is to completion anyway, it seems like it is still being recorded.

  39. Bootstar, I second your second of Lyndsey’s quote. Auto-tune is the devil (and I always thought that was Twitter), and singers don’t have to be Whitney Frackin’ Houston to be good.

    Esqt:

It looks like Lee just rolled out of bed in that photoshoot. From the snippet, they’re going minimalist, no surprise there. These grp just don’t know how to present themselves visually (w/ the exception of Siobhan).

I think Lee is doing a fine job of representing himself. Him doing fancy-schmancy would be like Adam going Straight Country the night he did “Ring of Fire.” Not good. Definitely not the image the artist is trying to project. Adam made the right choice, and Lee has too.
