Why Steven Tyler will be a terrible ‘Idol’ judge

He’s too damn old. He’s too damn dull.

“He’s a relic, ” one industry observer said dismissively of the 62-year old frontman to me Tuesday, following all the reports that Tyler is a done deal for the Fox amateur-hour hit. “All he brings to the show is a scarf and giant lips.”

Now, as both Tyler and Mick Jagger will tell you, there’s a lot of mileage to be had in a scarf and giant lips — but not necessarily a lot of judgment. And judgment, on both sides of the camera, is what you need to resurrect a former ratings behemoth like “Idol” — especially after the disappointing season it had last year and the departure of bitchy Brit Simon Cowell.

Why Steven Tyler Is The New Paula Abdul

After weeks of media speculation, multiple sources have finally confirmed that on/off Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has signed on as a new “American Idol” judge. This news has of course reignited debate over whether the wildman rocker, who obviously has decades of onstage know-how but no behind-the-scenes music business experience, is a suitable replacement for an industry executive like former star judge Simon Cowell.

But I say such debate is moot. See, Steven Tyler isn’t going to be the new Simon Cowell. He’s going to be the new Paula Abdul.

‘American Idol’ Winner Lee DeWyze’s Debut Due November 16

“I’ve written on every song. … I’m more or less looking forward to showing everybody what I do outside of the show and outside of this. To be able to be my own artist and do my own thing, I’m really looking forward to.”

He said he couldn’t talk about which artists and songwriters he’s working with but hinted that they were ones he’s listened to and is a fan of. “What’s really most important about the album for me is keeping it true to what I want to do and the kind of music I like to make and having it be real, not just some words thrown together, ” he said. “I like to write about love and relationships and emotions and feeling … being down and up. I like writing about things that everybody experiences and to be able to put that into my music … it’s going to be fun.”

Jeffrey Ross Makes His Case to Be ‘Idol’ Judge

Which contestants from the past few years have been your favorites?
I thought Crystal Bowersox was great. I voted like crazy for Adam Lambert. The ones I root for are people like Melinda Doolittle a couple seasons back, who was a backup singer her whole career, not the ones who are working as a bartender in Oklahoma. She’d dedicated her life to show business but didn’t make it. Those are the people who are putting themselves out there. And I relate to that—I know what it’s like to walk into a tough room.

Album Sales Hit SoundScan Era Low—Again

Overall album sales in this past chart week ending Sunday, Aug. 15 totaled 4.95 million units, marking the lowest weekly sales figure since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.

It’s also only the second time the weekly album sales total has dipped below 5 million. The first time it occurred was with the week ending May 30, when 4.98 million were sold.

At the time when Billboard reported on that back in June, we only had accessible archival SoundScan data going back to January 1994, so we couldn’t verify that it was the lowest sales week since SoundScan started in 1991. But since then, we’ve been able to confirm that statistic. (Nothing like verifiable bad news, right?)
