Why Steven Tyler will be a terrible ‘Idol’ judge

He’s too damn old. He’s too damn dull.

“He’s a relic, ” one industry observer said dismissively of the 62-year old frontman to me Tuesday, following all the reports that Tyler is a done deal for the Fox amateur-hour hit. “All he brings to the show is a scarf and giant lips.”

Now, as both Tyler and Mick Jagger will tell you, there’s a lot of mileage to be had in a scarf and giant lips — but not necessarily a lot of judgment. And judgment, on both sides of the camera, is what you need to resurrect a former ratings behemoth like “Idol” — especially after the disappointing season it had last year and the departure of bitchy Brit Simon Cowell.

Why Steven Tyler Is The New Paula Abdul

After weeks of media speculation, multiple sources have finally confirmed that on/off Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler has signed on as a new “American Idol” judge. This news has of course reignited debate over whether the wildman rocker, who obviously has decades of onstage know-how but no behind-the-scenes music business experience, is a suitable replacement for an industry executive like former star judge Simon Cowell.

But I say such debate is moot. See, Steven Tyler isn’t going to be the new Simon Cowell. He’s going to be the new Paula Abdul.

Idol Champ Lee DeWyze Announces Album…Will Anyone Buy It?

Lee DeWyze’s debut album is about to drop. But will he manage to transcend this year’s American Idol doldrums?

The 24-year-old folkie with the “aw, shucks” manner is set to debut the solo album on Nov. 16 through 19 Recordings/RCA Records.

The negative spin is already beginning…

‘American Idol’ Winner Lee DeWyze’s Debut Due November 16

“I’ve written on every song. … I’m more or less looking forward to showing everybody what I do outside of the show and outside of this. To be able to be my own artist and do my own thing, I’m really looking forward to.”

He said he couldn’t talk about which artists and songwriters he’s working with but hinted that they were ones he’s listened to and is a fan of. “What’s really most important about the album for me is keeping it true to what I want to do and the kind of music I like to make and having it be real, not just some words thrown together, ” he said. “I like to write about love and relationships and emotions and feeling … being down and up. I like writing about things that everybody experiences and to be able to put that into my music … it’s going to be fun.”

Jeffrey Ross Makes His Case to Be ‘Idol’ Judge

Which contestants from the past few years have been your favorites?
I thought Crystal Bowersox was great. I voted like crazy for Adam Lambert. The ones I root for are people like Melinda Doolittle a couple seasons back, who was a backup singer her whole career, not the ones who are working as a bartender in Oklahoma. She’d dedicated her life to show business but didn’t make it. Those are the people who are putting themselves out there. And I relate to that—I know what it’s like to walk into a tough room.

Album Sales Hit SoundScan Era Low—Again

Overall album sales in this past chart week ending Sunday, Aug. 15 totaled 4.95 million units, marking the lowest weekly sales figure since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.

It’s also only the second time the weekly album sales total has dipped below 5 million. The first time it occurred was with the week ending May 30, when 4.98 million were sold.

At the time when Billboard reported on that back in June, we only had accessible archival SoundScan data going back to January 1994, so we couldn’t verify that it was the lowest sales week since SoundScan started in 1991. But since then, we’ve been able to confirm that statistic. (Nothing like verifiable bad news, right?)

  1. And while he may have a strong adolescent fanbase—he recently won the Teen Choice Award for Male Reality/Variety Star—DeWyze’s success is far from a lock. His debut single failed to generate anywhere near the sales of predecessor Kris

Aside from the debate about Lee’s single sales… I can’t equate cover sales to new coronation sales. I’ve never much cared for any coronation song period, let alone bought one. However they do serve a purpose to solidify the fanbase and pull in some of those fence straddlers. I don’t think that happened this year with weak cover sales. We can only guess, but I wonder how the lack of a coronation song will have on album sales?

So much for the old argument about the current crop just aren’t as popular as Singers of the past. Hard numbers really do show that it is super, super tough to sell Albums anymore. And I’ll lay odds that the numbers aren’t going to go up any time soon.

I bet a readjustment in certification for gold and platinum numbers won’t be to far off.

  3. ainow Just got confirmation for a phone interview with the one and only @KrisAllen on Monday! Who has burning questions?

  4. Is that teen idol thing based on internet votes or what? If so, I’m not sure that proves Lee has a lot of adolescent followers, just that his Idol fans are good voters.

Do you have to prove you are a teen, lol?

  5. Re Lee talking about songwriters he admires there was an interesting article from AHN 2 weeks ago http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7019519248.

Following “Idol,” winners are afforded some of the best songwriters and collaborators in the business. Kris Allen scored Pat Monahan of Train and Jon Foreman of Switchfoot, Adam Lambert had songs written by Lady Gaga and Pink. DeWyze lists James Morrison and Jason Mraz as influences for his sound and who we would to collaborate with.

Unfortunately the article doesn’t seem to have been proofread, the bolded part is nonsense. Most likely it should read “who he would like to collaborate with”, but, set in the context of the first 2 sentences it could indicate something more!

Yeah that is online voting and no you don’t have to prove your a teen just create an account saying you are…lol

  7. Watched Fantasia – didn’t like her then and still don’t. I not a fan of a diva screaming.

  8. caaaaant barely wait for Lee’s new album!!! ugh…hate the negative comments on E!Online. just wait till it comes out and then judge the success!

  9. i love the “Steven Tyler is the new Paula Abdul” headline. That’s exactly what he is. Now can they PLEASE stop treating Shania like a second banana and secure her for the panel?!

  10. Loving the photograph of David Archuleta. Hope they start using the new ones for marketing. He is one good looking young man.

  11. hate the negative comments on E!Online. just wait till it comes out and then judge the success!

That’s because you don’t have to register at E!Online so a few people just keep adding comments under different aliases because of their inability to accept that more than one AI singer can be successful at the same time. ;)

  12. Just in case anybody cares, Carrie’s husband Mike Fisher laughed at and debunked that ridiculous Enquirer story: Ottawa Sun

Carrie blogged at her fan club today too. Lots of teases about special projects in the works. She says she’s been working on tribute albums in plural. She didn’t say what they were but one is probably the already confirmed Randy Travis collaborations album for next year. I’m hoping the other one is the Loretta Lynn tribute album that’s due out November 9th. Columbia Nashville’s releasing that one.

Carrie also said she’s gotten together with some of her writer friends and written 3 songs. One of them’s for a special project and the 2 others are for album #4! Excited!! A lot of Carrie fans think the special project is the soundtrack for Soul Surfer which will be her movie debut.

Last but not least Craig Morgan says Carrie’s agreed to a duet with him on his next album due out next year.

    Interview

Underwood invited him out to sing a duet or two; they usually covered Alan Jackson. They got along so well he’s asked her to sing on his next CD, due out in 2011.

“She said yeah. She wants to hear the song and make sure it’s something she feels comfortable with,” Morgan said. “I’m just finishing it where I can get it to her.”

Craig opened for Carrie for the 1st leg of the Play On tour and he’s labelmates with Kellie and Casey at BNA Records.

  13. Just in case anybody cares, Carrie’s husband Mike Fisher laughed at and debunked that ridiculous Enquirer story: Ottawa Sun

Well, that’s just shocking. You mean the Enquirer made that whole story up? Why, that’s so unlike them :).

  14. from the Jeffrey Ross article

The ones I root for are people like Melinda Doolittle a couple seasons back, who was a backup singer her whole career, not the ones who are working as a bartender in Oklahoma. She’d dedicated her life to show business but didn’t make it.

If he’s referring to David ‘Bartender’ Cook, the guy doesn’t have his facts straight. DC has played in bands and written music for over 10 years. He has toured and played with bands in bars & various clubs for years. The bartending was to help make ends meet while he put out a well-received do-it-yourself indie record. Cookie’s dedicated his life to music as much as Melinda, Adam, Crystal or whoever. That quote ticks me off.

  15. But I say such debate is moot. See, Steven Tyler isn’t going to be the new Simon Cowell. He’s going to be the new Paula Abdul.

LOL, I said essentially the same thing in a ‘Steven Tyler’ thread here earlier today.

  16. Just in case anybody cares, Carrie’s husband Mike Fisher laughed at and debunked that ridiculous Enquirer story: Ottawa Sun

Don’t know what story you’re referring to, but Carrie has whored herself out since Idol in order to become The World’s Biggest Celebrity. If she’s now suffering a bit of a backlash, well, them’s the breaks when you use the media to get rich.

  17. The bartending was to help make ends meet while he put out a well-received do-it-yourself indie record. Cookie’s dedicated his life to music as much as Melinda, Adam, Crystal or whoever. That quote ticks me off.

LOL, I saw that one too but couldn’t comment earlier because I was sitting through a 1 1/2 hour coaching meeting and I was supposed to be paying attention :) I had the same thought – oh, no, bartending while also doing gigs as a musician and trying to put out an album is *definitely* proof that you aren’t working your ass off at a music career. The lazy route! Just work AND grind it out as a musician, making next to no money. That’s definitely the easy way, lol. (Not taking anything away from his mentioned Melinda, Crystal and Adam who also busted their asses at a music career).

  18. Cookie’s dedicated his life to music as much as Melinda, Adam, Crystal or whoever. That quote ticks me off.

I know. Pissed me off too. That dude has no credibility if he can only be arsed to get his facts straight when it’s about one of his favorites from the show. I was relieved, however, that only one very articulate DC fan posted a rebuttal. One is much more effective than a deluge.

Don’t know what story you’re referring to, but Carrie has whored herself out since Idol in order to become The World’s Biggest Celebrity.

Whored herself out? Good Lord, the definitions of words have certainly “progressed” since I was a kid.

Craig opened for Carrie for the 1st leg of the Play On tour and he’s labelmates with Kellie and Casey at BNA Records.

NGL, that looks so good in print! :-)

  19. Good Lord, the definitions of words have certainly “progressed” since I was a kid.

LOL, me too. Unless she’s been bangin’ all the media folks ;)?

  20. Cookie’s dedicated his life to music as much as Melinda, Adam, Crystal or whoever. That quote ticks me off.

Yeah, David Cook was a bartender in Oklahoma like Kelly Clarkson was a cocktail waitress, like Daughtry worked at a car shop, like Brooke White was a nanny in LA, like Lee was a Chicago paint salesman, so and so was a sandwich maker or a waitress… these are musicians pounding the pavement and pursuing music as much as they can while also trying to make ends meet. I don’t get how these people are “dedicating their lives” any less just because they happen to maintain side jobs for cash…? I don’t get that logic AT ALL. That guy writes for Spin…? Didn’t that magazine fold? Maybe not the online portion? Whatevs.

  21. Eh, people use the term famewhore and mediawhore around here all the time. Carrie does court the press and there have been so many stories that portray her having a picture perfect life. More power to her. She’s talented and knows it’s part of the game. There’s gonna be a little backlash now and then.

  22. Eh, people use the term famewhore and mediawhore around here all the time.

It’s nitpicky, but “famewhore” and “whored herself out” just strike me as different. And was joking anyway, I have no vested interest in defending Carrie.

I don’t get how these people are “dedicating their lives” any less just because they happen to maintain side jobs for cash…?

That whole little quote from him just sold me on why he ought to NOT be a judge, lol. Isn’t that the path that most artists take? You work while you do gigs and you hope for a break? I mean, backup singer is perfectly respectable too, but not everyone gets that gig. My brother was one of the lazy ones, he was driving a truck all day and then doing gigs at night. Dammit, *that* is where we went wrong, he didn’t deserve it, he shoulda been a backup singer!

  23. Spin Magazine didn’t fold. They retooled and were sold, but they still have a monthly print edition.

  24. Am I the only one who got suckered into watching the Glee promo thinking there’d be new scenes?

Bo looks great in that photo. So does Archie in his. There’s some personality in those photos, which I like.

Isn’t Jeffrey Ross some guy who thinks he’s a comedian? Is it possible he wasn’t being serious?

tierbee: Unless she’s been bangin’ all the media folks ;) ?

Wow then she’s been even busier than I’d have thought! The legend grows…..

CindyM: Carrie does court the press and there have been so many stories that portray her having a picture perfect life.

What’s scary is how much more coverage she’d be getting if she really courted the press. This ain’t nothin compared to what it could be. I’d say Carrie’s learned the best way to control the beast is to feed it little innocuous portions. But ITA tabloid crap is inevitable.

BootStar: NGL, that looks so good in print! :-)

It felt pretty good writing it!

  25. Spin Magazine didn’t fold. They retooled and were sold, but they still have a monthly print edition.

That’s cool for them. That guy is still a tool =P

  26. Cookie’s dedicated his life to music as much as Melinda, Adam, Crystal or whoever. That quote ticks me off.

Yep. Especially since he was writing and producing albums on his own dime since he was what, 15, 16? *pats silly little Jeffrey Ross on the head and sends him on his way* Stick to your Comedy Central roasts, where asshattery is a talent.

I admit I’m kinda sorta looking forward to Steven Tyler. I dunno, I imagine this moment where he first opens his mouth and it could go two ways. One, he’s totally batshit, or two, he freaks everyone out with his normalcy. Plus, I love Liv Tyler.

  27. The comments following the article on MSNBC about Steven Tyler are mostly positive. I read about 40 out of the 170 comments and was really surprised. And I agree that he is Paula’s successor, not Simon’s. Bring on the crazy.

The article on album sales makes me sad. Digital piracy is killing this industry. I have teenagers and we buy music but I know that most of their friends don’t.

  28. I admit I’m kinda sorta looking forward to Steven Tyler.

Haha, I’m glad I’m not alone. I have no idea what to expect, he’s a nut. But I’m kinda looking forward to it. I was not enthused about JLo and would be thrilled to hear someone else is on the panel. I just want Kara gone. I tried to like her, and I failed.

I am not defending the guy but if you just go by what Idol spins you then Melinda was a back up singer, Cook was a bartender, Lee was a paint salesmen….ect ect it makes no never mind how long they toiled at what ever crappy job to support their dream to be a recording artist. That is what Idol spun and that is what the general public sees.

  30. smeggingnuts – you’re right. those are the stories AI spun; but a music writer should be able to dig out the fact from the fiction. As BootStar wrote “That dude has no credibility if he can only be arsed to get his facts straight when it’s about one of his favorites from the show. “

  31. Steven Tyler being the new Paula would be fine, if they weren’t actively casting for a Paula replacement with people like JLo and Shania Twain, i.e. a “nice” judge and a female one. I think the lack of someone with some experience signing and managing singers, is a mistake. Now if there were a female exec. in the music field, and have her be on the panel with Steven/Paula? great. But do such creatures exist? and sigh.

  32. I am not defending the guy but if you just go by what Idol spins you then Melinda was a back up singer, Cook was a bartender, Lee was a paint salesmen…

Well yeah, but he says he’s an Idol superfan, so you’d think he’d have seen the clippage of Cook playing with his band at the bar he tended. They didn’t hide the fact that he was plugging away at the music business on a smaller indie scale even if they did play up the bartender angle. Anyway, I think he’s mostly full of shit in that article and he knows there’s not a snowball’s chance in hell of landing the gig. It’s a way to get your name in the press. Stern did the same thing.

  33. smeggingnuts – you’re right. those are the stories AI spun; but a music writer should be able to dig out the fact from the fiction. As BootStar wrote “That dude has no credibility if he can only be arsed to get his facts straight when it’s about one of his favorites from the show.

    He’s not a “music writer”. He’s a comedian.

  34. He’s not a “music writer”. He’s a comedian.

I don’t know, or care particularly, what he is. Googling ANYBODY takes what? Thirty seconds? Or go to Wikipedia. If you’re too damn lazy (or clueless) to do that, then you don’t get a job on any show I produce, whether it’s as a comedian or a “judge” of talent.

ETA (since it only took 13 seconds to Google him, go to his Wikipedia page, and cut and paste this here):

Jeffrey Ross Lifschultz (born September 13, 1965), best known as Jeffrey Ross, is an American stand-up comedian, insult comic, actor, director and author.

I think he was filling the role of “insult comic” in that interview! ;-) Personally, I find sunchick much funnier!

  35. There’s alot of singing going on in that Fantasia soundcheck, and it’s fierce indeed!

  36. Personally, I find sunchick much funnier!

Okay, that seals it. I’m totally throwing my hat into the ring to be the next AI judge.

“That sucked. CLEARLY you’re no David Cook.”

“Seriously? Did you just go there? Hello, David Cook sang Always Be My Baby on this show. I know you are a female R&B singer who idolizes Mimi, but bitch please.”

“Hmmm. I’m on the fence. No doubt you can sing, but how are you at crossword puzzles? What? Jes sayin, chicks dig smart guys….”

    Then again, maybe not. ;)

  37. Sure DC was a bartender (most struggling artists have day jobs), but the article suggested that contestants like Cook had not pursued a music career the way Melinda, for example, had. That assertion was bullshit and in error. That is the point. Sloppy journalism and people are calling him on it. Comedian or not, he made a slur against DC and it wasn’t about being a bartender, it was about implying that DC hadn’t paid his dues.
