Alicia Keys vs. Fantasia Barrino

What I found to be most interesting is that Alicia Keys has been able to escape this type of media scrutiny in the mainstream press, even though she reportedly was engaged in a three-year affair with a married man, which ultimately resulted in the demise of the marriage. Keys also became pregnant and engaged to super producer Swizz Beatz while the man was separated but still married nonetheless. She then married Beatz weeks after his divorce was finalized. The black press have let both Fantasia and Keys have it for their indiscretions, but the mainstream media took to the Fantasia story like a rabid dog while ignoring the illicit actions of Keys.

‘American Idol’ To Refocus On Talent: 5 Possible Outcomes

The 10th season of Fox’s ‘American Idol’ has had, to say the least, a lot of speculation surrounding it, due to yet-to-be-specified chair-shuffling at the judges’ table, behind-the-scenes changes, and a slightly dimmed profile for the show.

But one thing has remained constant through all the tumult: the competition’s purpose, which is to find a singer who has enough charisma and charm to get audience members calling and texting (and, later, buying concert tickets and albums). That may be why Michael Ferrel, the CEO of ‘Idol’ owner CKX, said on a conference call Monday that this forthcoming season would “refocus… on the talent.”

Cowell: Judges overshadow singers

Simon Cowell has admitted X Factor contestants have not always enjoyed enough of the limelight because they have been overshadowed by the judges.

The TV mogul has filmed auditions for the seventh series of the hit show, which features guest judge Nicole Scherzinger.

He said: “Sometimes we have gotten into the habit, and obviously I’m partly responsible for this, of the judges’ personalities being talked about more than the contestants.

LEHIGH VALLEY MUSIC: Homecoming for Orianthi guitarist

Besides Lambert and his opening act, Allison Iraheta, there was another “American Idol” alum at the show.

Tyler Grady of Nazareth, who was in the Top 24 this season, was at the RiverPlace venue to take in the show. He drew so much attention – people actually lined up to get their photo taken with him –that security had to intervene and ask him to move out of the passageway.

Grady said he and his band, Wailing Waters, are preparing to head into the studio to record some new music.

Your First Look at Glee’s New Slushee-Centric Ad Campaign

This year’s promo campaign, which will start appearing on billboards, buses, and everywhere else next week, provides a cold, wet illustration for just how empowered New Directions has become since the show began last season, and the ads featured the universal hand gesture for “loser.” When the show began, the slushee was “a weapon to put the Glee kids down, ” says Fox marketing president Joe Earley, while by season’s end, our lovable losers had co-opted this weapon, dousing Mr. Schuester in the finale. Take back the slushee!

  1. I wonder if Simon’s praise of Nicole is an indication that he’s considering her as a judge for U.S. X Factor. He seems to really like her.

  2. Aww, for fans of the Davids, first we find out they are bookending the US Open performances… now they are hanging out? Too cute… From twitter:

mikekmusic: What are the chances @DavidArchie , @thedavidcook and @DavidOsmond1 are all at my house today? LOL
    about 5 hours ago

  3. Aw, the Davids FTW! Bet DC is listening to Archie’s new songs and such, too.

  4. Simon’s comments suggest something needs to change for his show here. I don’t think American viewers will like a TMZ-style celeb showdown disguised as a talent contest. X Factor USA needs to be really different…

  5. awww…the Davids seem to be on the same page alot career wise. They both have cds coming out this fall so i bet they will be touring at about the same time too. I’m past ready for another DC and The Anthemic show.

  6. Bo and Taylor would be fun to see tonight and it’s all for a great cause.

  7. Didn’t they post that picture before when advertising the pre-sale and say it wasn’t the cover of Archie’s album?

  8. Didn’t they post that picture before when advertising the pre-sale and say it wasn’t the cover of Archie’s album?

I think they said something about how the pic wasn’t official. I guess now it is.

  9. Wow, I like that album cover for Archie! The picture along with the title of the album…I get it now. “the other side of down” is up!

  10. wordnerdarchie: I think they said something about how the pic wasn’t official. I guess now it is.

So typical of AI-related ways of doing things. When first released, they said it wasn’t official/final and now we find out it is.

Disappointed. Don’t like the jacket he’s wearing. Above all, don’t like the boots. They take over the pic, distracting.

  11. They both have cds coming out this fall so i bet they will be touring at about the same time too.

From your lips to… RCA’s ears. Gonna try to maintain patience for another month, but if we still don’t hear *any* rumors about a single release date/timeline from anyone in David Cook’s camp, I will seriously start to lose hope for a Fall release.

Alicia vs. Fantasia coverage is interesting. Of course no one knows any details, but my impression from media coverage was that Swizz Beatz was definitely separated from his wife by the time his affair with Alicia went public. Whatever the truth, Alicia’s media people did a good job there controlling the spin. Fantasia’s people? Not so much. With Fantasia, the story we got is that while she apparently thought her guy was separated when they began their relationship, it seems that she found out he was still living with his wife and kids a while ago and yet still continued to be on again/off again with this guy. In addition, while Swizz Beatz’s wife did speak out about being “blindsided”, it’s not as salacious as Paula Cook suing Fantasia for home wrecking and citing multiple sex tapes and ugly voicemails. And I’m not gonna lie. I think prejudice plays into this a lot. Alicia’s existing reputation in the mainstream media is this beautiful, intelligent musical prodigy, an artist and musician with Juilliard pedigree, who’s put her fame towards various humanitarian causes, is passionate about Africa, etc. etc. Fantasia’s reputation is that of someone who had a really tough life growing up, had America rooting for her, got her fairytale Idol win, but then almost lost her house and everything she gained due to deadbeat family members and poor financial management. It may or may not be fair, but people can look at that and interpret it as Fantasia having a history of poor judgment, and see the affair as yet another instance of that. They’re less likely to give her the benefit of the doubt.

I’m really liking Archie’s album cover! Fresh-faced, open, bright, positive. Just like Archie! He looks older, in a really good way.

  12. Gonna try to maintain patience for another month, but if we still don’t hear *any* rumors about a single release date/timeline from anyone in David Cook’s camp, I will seriously start to lose hope for a Fall release.

Smallie, I’m doing the same thing, practically pretending to be patient, and dusting the money on the table. ;) But just because we don’t hear anything doesn’t mean things aren’t happening – good as the CNN is – the Cook Camp can be tighter.

Also – something to consider –

They didn’t announce LO as single til 9/19/2008.

  13. Smallie, great analysis of the Alicia/Fantasia dichotomy. I’ve pretty much kept my thoughts to myself but that Roots article is definitely intriguing to say the least.

  14. The fact that DC & the boys seem to be spending more time out of the studio than in in kinda kills my hope for a fall release (seriously another week off last week? Gimme a break. Just take your sweet time.) That and the fact he said in that little Q&A from Busch Gardens that a new album was amongst the things in 2011..that combined with David saying he was enjoying not rushing with this one.

They didn’t announce LO as single til 9/19/2008.

I could buy that logic except for AINow saying 2 weeks ago, per management they didnt have a single timeline set in place. That’s really pushing things. I’d wager a guess that in 2008 at this time they at least had an idea of when they wanted the first single out.

  15. We need picture proof both davids are hanging out. PROOF! *crosses arms*

  16. I’m wondering why the mainstream media are so willing to let Keys off the hook for what many would call socially unacceptable behavior at best, and immoral behavior at worst, while taking Barrino to task for similar behavior.

That The Root article was really interesting. I don’t follow Alicia Keys or Fantasia closely, but I’ve been wondering the same exact thing. My opinion? The color of their skin and the fact that one is considered “uptown” and the other “from the ghetto.” Alicia may be from Hell’s Kitchen, but she graduated from a prestigious high school as valedictorian and attended Columbia. Fantasia’s sad sack story has been widely documented and even apparently warranted a Lifetime movie. (For the record, I’ve never seen it.)

Even some of the comments I’ve seen posted here on MJs lumping Fantasia, Stephanie Edwards and Asia’h Epperson together and commeting on their “poor choices,” etc. — while conveniently ignoring the stunts of Nikki McKibben, Jessica Sierra and Jesse Langseth (who are white) suggest that there’s a double standard.

This was the most indicting comment of all in that article, however:

Even in Charlotte, where I live when not in D.C., the media, which normally rarely cover the North Carolina native made good, have been fixated on the attempted suicide and tawdry details of the affair. I’m wondering: If they know that this type of scrutiny is what drove her to try to commit suicide, why would they continue badgering her in the press? But that’s another story.

Wow maybe they’ll tour together like Ruben and Clay? LOL j/k

  18. Maybe if Alecia Keys had a pissed off ex wife who was willing to spill all the gory details, Alecia would have been as scrutinized as Fantasia. I dont think it has anything to do with the color of their skin. It has to do with how secretive the whole thing was. I remember my kids being shocked to know Alecia was married, let alone pregnant when her pic was in People a month or so ago because the last rumor about her was that she was gay (google it).

As far as Nikki and Jessica- those things were years ago, and who the hell besides Slezak and a few people here even remembers Jessie Langseth? The Epperson and Edwards thing were more recent.

  19. Studio57, agree with your whole post. Except the part where you mispelled Alicia =P. Heh, j/k. I am typo queen.

  20. For those of you who are interested, Fantasia’s Bittersweet is Amazon’s free song of the day.

  21. It wasn’t a typo- I just didn’t know how to spell Alicia and was that damn lazy that I didn’t scroll up to look at it, haha.

  22. Alicia probably did get off easily in the court of public opinion but if Swiss Beatz ex-wife had filed court papers during the divorce alleging a sex tape, and making claims Alicia was hostile and dismissive of her on the phone, you can bet it would have been front page news. Another difference is both Alicia Keys and Swiss Beatz are celebrities. We’re used to celebrities screwing up and screwing around with each other. The idea of an “every woman” like Mrs. Paula Cook being blindsided by her working class husband and his celebrity mistress is much more relatable and salacious.

I don’t see any connection between people taking about Fantasia, A’siah, and Stephanie, and how Jessica, Nikki, and Jessie were treated. I remember LOTS of discussion on the blog about Jessica (much more so than about A’siah and Stephanie Edwards, who have barely registered as a blip on the radar beyond AI blogs). But that situation was a long time ago and involved her struggle with drugs. I don’t recall that she also participated in the destruction of a marriage.

Plus let’s not forget Leann Rimes. She’s a white country singer and has been raked over the coals much more than either Alicia or Fantasia. Her relationship with Eddie Cibrian is still tabloid fodder and the affair has most likely seriously damaged her career.

Trina – I don’t guess. That’s not a piece of logic, the announcement date of LO – it”s just a fact…and “If” they knew of a timeline in 2008 – well, we didn’t. Just as we don’t now.

I just stay practically patient and dust my money on the table – because, what else? KWIM? ;)

  24. I just stay practically patient and dust my money on the table – because, what else? KWIM?

And he tweets to ease the pain of the wait!

thedavidcook: Workout this morning, followed by hang time with the dubs. Now, on to the studio for more vocals. La. La. La. :)

Hee. So… does this mean the second batch is almost done!? @sstalking, but maybe that’s why the band took some time off after the BG shows, cuz David needed a few days to rest his voice so he can kill it in the studio? What else can I wildly infer from that little tweet? The new single is called La. La. La. Uh oh, that sounds like a Kesha song, DC’s gone pop! This is the rumored Max Martin collab! LOL. J/k. At this rate, I’m so desperate for new songs, I’ll still buy it.

  25. I hear ya, smallie. Any crumbs is good with me! Keep the hope alive, LOL. ;)

  26. La. La. La. Uh oh, that sounds like a Kesha song, DC’s gone pop! This is the rumored Max Martin collab!

    Oh noes! We iz doomed!

    Hee.

The “vocal rest” theory is actually plausible. If they needed to stitch up takes to account for extra bobbles when his voice was tired, it might have taken a week anyway. Thanks for making me consider that.

And I don’t have the energy to go back and remember the way the “entertainment news” blurbs described Ms. Keys’ baby bump, but it certainly didn’t make much mention of how she’d gotten it in the first place. It did strike me as odd.

  27. Keep those Cookie crumbs coming. In the meantime, I’ll just keep listening to the full Sunday BG concert mp3 that I downloaded into my iTunes, thanks to a very generous Cook fan. :)

  28. I could buy that logic except for AINow saying 2 weeks ago, per management they didnt have a single timeline set in place. That’s really pushing things. I’d wager a guess that in 2008 at this time they at least had an idea of when they wanted the first single out.

Just because management wasn’t ready to give information exclusively to AINow doesn’t mean they have absolutely no clue about when they are shooting for a single release. Maybe they should have said “we have a timeline, but we are just not going to tell you!” instead. ;)

  29. I’ll just keep listening to the full Sunday BG concert mp3 that I downloaded into my iTunes, thanks to a very generous Cook fan.

where can i get me one of those, wordnerdarchie?

  30. I could buy that logic except for AINow saying 2 weeks ago, per management they didnt have a single timeline set in place. That’s really pushing things. I’d wager a guess that in 2008 at this time they at least had an idea of when they wanted the first single out.

Cook said during his banter at last week’s Busch Gardens concert that they were “almost done” on the album, didn’t he? I recall watching a video where he said something to that effect, though I don’t remember his exact words, so I would think that a single release will be forthcoming in the next month or so.
