Could Nigel Lythgoe Pull Double Duty as Judge?

Fox could get more bang for its buck if it closes a deal with former American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe to return to the show for its 10th season. A source with knowledge of the negotiations told EW that Fox has talked to Lythgoe about joining the judging panel (which reportedly already includes Jennifer Lopez) — an appropriate and obvious possibility, given that Lythgoe already serves as the main judge for So You Think You Can Dance, Fox’s summer competition show. (He also produces it.)

A Fox spokeswoman would not comment on the possibility of Lythgoe returning to the show in any capacity, which largely echoes what Fox Entertainment Chairman Peter Rice told TV reporters on Monday in Beverly Hills.

Will ‘American Idol’ Lose Viewers To ‘The X Factor’?

‘The drama, spectacle and talent ‘X-Factor’ will offer should be a winning combination, ‘ says ‘Idol’ blogger MJ Santilli. (My quote is in the headline! WHEEE!)

In stark contrast to the furious “American Idol” news stream of the past several days, the show’s Television Critics Association press conference on Monday came and went with nary a noteworthy announcement.

That’s probably OK with Fox and “Idol, ” seeing that, after nine seasons, the hit reality show has arguably never been more vulnerable:

Ratings are down from their 2006 high, Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres have abandoned their judges’ chairs, and rumors are swirling that Kara DioGuardi is heading for the exit too — all after what many fans see as the show’s most underwhelming season in the show’s history.

Poor judging is compounding problems on ‘SYTYCD’

Which brings us to the current season of “So You Think You Can Dance, ” where the judges have become one of the stories in a season that has been notable for both the amount of changes it instituted this year, and how poorly most of them have worked.

This season has been a nightmare on several levels. The first three dancers eliminated were women, creating a lopsided gender balance with six men among the remaining eight contestants. But that’s OK, because viewers haven’t had to vote off very many dancers. Alex Wong and Ashley Galvan had to withdraw in back-to-back weeks with injuries, and Billy Bell was saved only because the show had an elimination-free episode.
