No ‘ponyhawk, ‘ but Sanjaya does mean moonwalk in ‘Idol’ tour stop

There would be no “ponyhawk” during Tuesday night’s American Idols Live! tour stop at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. Sanjaya Malakar’s celebrated mane went through only slight variations, alternately looking like Debra Winger’s do from “An Officer and a Gentleman” and Robert De Niro’s from “Cape Fear.” If there was a hair straightener backstage, none of the others were letting Sanjaya use it….

Sedaka enjoying laughter in his reign on pop scene

…Unlike many contemporary artists, Sedaka “is addicted” to “American Idol.” He was a celebrity judge when contestants did his songs. The national exposure didn’t hurt.“I was besieged at the supermarket, ” says Sedaka, oh-so-grateful his career is no longer dust when people would ask him, “Didn’t you used to be Neil Sedaka?”

“I couldn’t get a job, ” he says of the late 1960s. Enter Elton John, who signed Sedaka on his Rocket Records label. A career was resurrected, even if a Chinese tour guide at the Great Wall wasn’t aware who was riding on his bus.

“He could hardly speak English, but he said he was going to sing a song in English because of all the Americans, ” Sedaka recalls, “and he sings `Oh! CULTURE DIGEST: Wall Street Journal says spiritual interest is growing in Europe

MANDISA DEBUTS BOOK & CD — Mandisa Hundley, the “American Idol” contestant who didn’t hesitate to express her Christian beliefs, has written a book and recorded a CD aimed at promoting a message of confidence for women who struggle with the world’s expectations. Her book, “IDOLeyes, ” tells about her challenges and victories through growing up and breaking into the music industry.

“My struggle with my weight has been the biggest struggle of my life, ” Mandisa (who uses solely her first name) said. “Rather than turning to alcohol or drugs when I was going through emotional times, I turned to food. As a result, I’ve become unhealthy — and it’s a day-to-day process to overcome.”

Mandisa’s debut CD, “True Beauty, ” “exemplifies the desire of women to be known and respected for who they are within. Singing from personal experience, it is a biblical message that all women in today’s modern world need to hear and believe, ” according to reviewer Kelly Jad’on of blogcritics.org.

After college, Mandisa became a telephone sales representative at LifeWay Christian Resources and later worked briefly for LifeWay’s women’s enrichment events before joining Bible teacher Beth Moore’s worship team as a singer for her Living Proof Live conferences.

Small-town ‘Idol’ girl is living her dreams

Kellie Pickler wooed the nation as the somewhat ditzy, small-town Southern girl with the big voice on “American Idol” a year ago. 1. Bucky Covington takes the lead as this yearà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s best-selling debut country artist.

Good things do happen to good people!
I’m so proud of Bucky. What a great life lies ahead for him!

Morning, Lisa! Thanks for all you do for all of us.

  2. Good morning, all! Thanks for the great reads during breakfast, Lisa!

    From the first review posted:

The show closed with Sparks singing her country classic “Broken Wing,” followed by the entire ensemble in a finale of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer.”

Now that is just bad writing. Since when did “Broken Wing” become Jordin’s country classic? Things like that just drive me crazy!

  3. The idol tour has been getting great reviews but I’m laughing at the Sacramento Bee one. It makes the Season 5 show sound like a bomb. What happened to those losers anyway? Congrats to Bucky for the biggest country debut of the year and Elliott for hitting #6 on the Top 40 chart today. He finally equalled the accomplishment of the great Mario V. (and Chris and Kelly C.)

  4. Daughtry – It’s Not Over (Epic)
UK release date: 30 July 2007

Ah, reality TV. That bastion of bad cover versions, dodgy attire, and even dodgier contestants.
All too rarely has a true talent emerged from said form of sacrificial ridicule – save for Kelly Clarkson – and though crooning US rocker Chris Daughtry makes his best attempt in the form of debut UK single It’s Not Over, it’s extremely hard to imagine the desired market latching on to Daughtry’s brand of post-grunge bore-rock.

You see, It’s Not Over really isn’t a bad song. Vocally strong, and with a guitar lick that’d get your gran going, it’s not all that far removed from the stadium sized crunchers Bon Jovi and co churn out on a yearly basis. But it’s just a little late. We’ve heard it all before, and we really don’t need to hear it all again.

  5. Ok, one more complaint about what passes for reportage, in the PennLive interview with Kellie:

A: Well, I’ve tried some interesting foods. I went up to northern Canada to visit Jordin [Sparks] and she had me eating raw caribou and whale blubber. It was nuts. I guess you can say I’ve definitely broadened my horizons.

The Jordin she is referring to is Jordin Tootoo…her hockey playing boyfriend! Why the h… would Jordin Sparks be inviting Kellie to northern Canada? Do these people even TRY to make sense?

  6. Someone tell the English reviewer that Daughtry found their audience (in the US at least.)

  7. Just because it’s popular in the US does not mean it is a dead cert for the UK.

  8. Good Morning all. Lisa B, here’s hoping the flood clean up is behind you. I think of you every time they report the UK flooding on the news.

  9. I have to agree with the UK review of Daughtry, whether Chris D has a hit or not, it’s still yesterday’s music….and isn’t it ironic that Bon Jovi from whom Chris emulates, is now going country???WHAT???

About Bucky: I remember saying to myself when he was on Idol, he’s cute as can be, but he definitely needs singing lessons, he was way off key, and did not articulate his words. At the time he sounded like he had a lisp when he sang. I guess those studio guys and producers worked really hard getting that corrected.

  10. (note to me: stop hogging) Anyway, I’m glad the tour is getting good to positive notices, that helps bring the fans out. I just wish they weren’t out in the burbs where I live. I hate driving to the burbs at night.

  11. Lisa, glad you are OK, too. I know how frustrating it is to get seepage in my basement, so I can’t imagine what real flooding would do to me!! And I agree that Chris’s US success may well not translate in other countries.

As to the idea of “yesterday’s music”, well, its all a little derivitive, isn’t it?

  12. The Jordin she is referring to is Jordin Tootooà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦her hockey playing boyfriend! Why the hà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ would Jordin Sparks be inviting Kellie to northern Canada? Do these people even TRY to make sense?

That has got to be my favorite comment of the week! Too bad we didn’t get more backstories during Season 6 about how Jordin Sparks was into raw caribou and whale blubber. I may have actually voted for her then.

  13. LOL, marco! Sure would have made it more interesting, wouldn’t it? Whale blubber in Arizona…… :lol_tb:

  14. Too bad we didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get more backstories during Season 6 about how Jordin Sparks was into raw caribou and whale blubber.

Jordin is actually the Inuktitut word for “Great Hunter”. You should see how handy she is with a harpoon. She is said to be the fastest kayakers seen in Northern Canada for quite some time. Her higher register was honed while practicing the call of the beluga whale. She even designs her own line of fashionable mukluks.

Didn’t they cover this part of her backstory on the American broadcast of the show?

(don’t tell me you didn’t know how Blake first began beat boxing when he was trying to keep his lips from freezing in his igloo at night)

  15. Since the INO video is number 2 on MTV UK as of today does it really matter what one reviewer thinks about the song INO…LOL!

If the people like “It’s Not Over” than that is who matters.

INO, IMO, is a great song and was the reason why the Daughtry CD sold its first 2 million albums in the US.

Time will tell how it does in the UK but it is off to a great start.

  16. The reason they didn’t reveal Jordin’s Inuktitut background was because then people might have found out that she isn’t 17(!) at all–she’s 34, but is able to keep her complexion young and wrinkle-free from the whale blubber she puts on her face nightly. Whale blubber is a natural humectrant and full of antioxidants!

The other scandal that may have surfaced is that she knew Randy Jackson way before the competition began. Journey was doing a concert in an amphitheater in Manitoba, when a polar bear jumped onto the stage and rushed Jackson. A quick-acting and brave Jordin Sparks tackled the bear, secured it in a submission hold, and soothed it by belting out a traditional Inuktitut lullaby, a skill she learned from her father, who was a professional bear wrestler back in the day. It was said that Jackson was so grateful that he pumped his fist in the air and shouted, “We got a hot one here tonight! That was da’ bomb, Dawg! You in the Dawg Pound now!”

A quick-acting and brave Jordin Sparks tackled the bear, secured it in a submission hold, and soothed it by belting out a traditional Inuktitut lullaby, a skill she learned from her father, who was a professional bear wrestler back in the day.

What? Are you saying that is secret? The Legend of Jordin and the Bear is famous throughout Canada. Children beg their parents every night to hear the story of how she saved that man from the States (though, many times, the story is changed so that it’s a Dawg/Dog that she saves because that makes the story a little more interesting…dramatic license and all that…who doesn’t love a good dog story?)

Really, I thought everybody knew this stuff or I would have given MJ the big scoop. Can you forgive your Canadian readers, MJ?

(PS You guys do know about the horrible muskeg accident that took Phil’s hair, right?)

  18. What about Jordin’s father. We never heard about him.
Everybody knows he invented football in Canada.
He’s so revered up here they named a team after him.
They call it the Edmonton Eskimoes.

  19. (PS You guys do know about the horrible muskeg accident that took Philà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hair, right?)

And the shame Chris Richardson brought to his clan when he was kicked out of the Inuit Throat-Singing Boy’s Choir of Northern Quebec when he attempted to shift the group’s focus away from their traditional repertoire. His battle cry? “Nasal is a form of singing!”

  20. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Nasal is a form of singing!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Well, he did have a bit of a point. If you open your mouth to sing in Canada, your lungs freeze solid within two stanzas. So, all the singers who survive sing through their nose. Proof? Celine Dion.

  21. What about Jordinà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s father.

What about her mother? Jordin’s Mom was the first to figure out how to catch and ride cariboo providing a pivotal method of transporation in the far north for those who cannot afford to keep a dog sled team. In honour of her and her husband, two Canadian football teams called themselves the Rough Riders (though Saskatchewan named their team “Roughriders” so that they could easily be distinguished from the Ottawa “Rough Riders”).

I’m really shocked that all this is news. I’m beginning to wonder if they even know that Sanjaya was raised by artic wolves (a research team from Environment Canada found him when they were out studying ice thickness off of Iqualet).

  22. You guys are on fire today. But this?

And the shame Chris Richardson brought to his clan when he was kicked out of the Inuit Throat-Singing Boyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Choir of Northern Quebec when he attempted to shift the groupà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s focus away from their traditional repertoire. His battle cry? à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Nasal is a form of singing!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Well now that is just taking things a bit too far my friends.

Besides, everyone knows that Chris honed his technique at that Sarah Evans School of Vocal Arts. He was the star pupil in the Master Class of Nasal Vocalization taught by guest professors Rascall Flatts.

  23. You guys are on one this morning. I was reading the TV Guide article with Phil and could it be that he already has a deal?

That’s how many were watching when the salt-and-pepper haired Birmingham native bested Katherine McPhee with his unique brand of blue-eyed soul to take home the crown on the Season 5 finale of American Idol in 2006.

Since winning, Hicks has lived the good life that most Idol winners enjoy, with his single Do I Make You Proud soaring to No. 1 on the Billboard charts and his self-titled album going platinum. He also recently published his best-selling memoir about his pre-Idol days, Heart Full of Soul.

Hicks makes two stops in Mississippi on his current tour, with a two-night stint at Ameristar’s Bottleneck Blues Bar Wednesday and Aug. 2 and a performance at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi August 3.

    http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/charts/boxscore.jsp

Even more impressive was the fact that the sales prices for this concert were the lowest out of the top 10 concerts on that Billboard list.

    Gross Sales: $931,546

    Prices: $65, $35

  38. I believe that squishy. Nickleback is hot right now. They have moved up to #9 on this weeks Billboard 200!

    Gotta love ’em!

  39. The Police are making 4 million at one concert wow ..I guess thier ticket prices are uo thier but people are buying them..Prince also had a private concert about one thousand per couple and 312.12 for standing room only….I know Prince was very popular in the 80’s I do not know how long the Police were around?

  40. So NOLA you are a fan of Nickelback? Who would have thought?

Nickelback just re-released their current CD in a package with a new song and hot new concert clips. It’s great that that new re-release is selling well!

  41. Looks like the little dà ¢’ž ¢ myth continues:

When the group started working on the debut album, the members did not have any particular concept note in mind. They were out to prove their mettle and they succeeded.

We all know that little dà ¢’ž ¢ recorded the album with studio musicians and that the Spice Boys were cast…er, make that hired, later.

Management needs to clarify this issue once and for all for what appears to be an endless supply of clueless reporters out there.

  42. Nickelback just re-released their current CD in a package with a new song and hot new concert clips. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s great that that new re-release is selling well!

Even without the re-release, Nickelback has been doing very well. This current album is on it’s 94th week on the BB 200 list (only 3 other albums on the current chart have been on there longer).

Carrie Underwood is no slouch either. She’s been on that chart for a total of 88 weeks (6th longest…she’ll no doubt be 5th longest because one of the albums will be moved to the catalog chart next week). I would not be at all surprised if she lasted the full 104 weeks on that chart (albums are only allowed to be on that chart for 2 years).

  43. Management needs to clarify this issue once and for all to the clueless reporters out there.

I believe that Management created the “Legend of Daughtry” and are the ones feeding the information to clueless reporters (where else would the reporter come up with “When the group started working on the debut album, the members did not have any particular concept note in mind.”?). Technically, there is nothing inaccurate about the statement. When work started on the album, the group (consisting of one person) did not have any particular concept in mind. You could even push it to say that the other four people who were destined to one day join the band even had less of an idea of where the album was headed when it was started (since they didn’t even know about it)

So, Management is doing a great job of clarify/obfuscating this issue. Well done.

    Go Management!

Although, I don’t know why the bother. It’s pretty clear that Rock fans and radio stations love Daughtry. They don’t give a rat’s a$$ about the band’s pedigree, so why keep it up?

  44. Definitely Nickelback is doing so well. I agree with reviews that say despite all the critical mocking they are “bullet proof”!

Carrie is in her own league!

  45. I agree with reviews that say despite all the critical mocking they are à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“bullet proofà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ !

Nickelback may be bullet-proof, but they still suck.

    IMO of course. :-)

Any good legend needs a song commemorating its origin…do you think Gordon Lightfoot would mind if someone stole…er, adapted “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”?

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy.

  47. IMO, the band live sounds much BETTER than who ever played the instruments on the Daughtry CD.

The Daughtry sophomore CD should be a lot of fun.

  48. IMO, the band live sounds much BETTER than who ever played the instruments on the Daughtry CD.

That Slash is such an over-rated hack…LOL.

  49. IMO, Slash was underused on the Daughtry song “What I Want” (the only song he played on the CD). The producer should have showcased his guitar playing more.

  50. I believe that Management created the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Legend of Daughtryà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and are the ones feeding the information to clueless reporters (where else would the reporter come up with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“When the group started working on the debut album, the members did not have any particular concept note in mind.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ?). Dag Kristen, there you go being a realist again.

But as someone posted, it does not matter. The Three Blind Mice could have written, played and produced his cd and he and Spice boys would still receive all the accolades. What’s a little fudging of the truth when you’re an instant success…LOL

IMO, the band live sounds much BETTER than who ever played the instruments on the Daughtry CD.

You mean they finally learned the songs… Is Chris still giving his fans only 40-45 minutes, including encore, of concert?

Speaking of getting credit for something that did not take place, Destiny Child was like that. Beyonce was the writer, vocalist, both background and front, and producer of their cds but she always gave the girls credit publically until she came into her own. Now she takes full credit for the all the Destiny Child’s cds.

  51. Chris has never implied in any interview that the band played instruments on the Daughtry CD. He has always said the band was formed after the CD was made.

That fact doesn’t bother Daughtry fans for as I said before, the band sounds even better live than on the CD. Also, the concerts aren’t just about Chris for the Daughtry fans but about all the guys. We appreciate every one of them for they bring their own style to the concerts.

  52. That fact doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t bother Daughtry fans for as I said before, the band sounds even better live than on the CD.

See, I feel just the opposite. I think the instrumentation on the CD is far superior to that of the live band. For me, the only musician in that band with better than average talent is the drummer. The other guys in the band were no better (and sometimes worse) than the average Joe’s in the two warm up bands. Chris already has the voice that his fans want to hear – what he needs in that band is someone with some kick-a$$ guitar skills.

  53. What Daughtry concert did you go to SpenserJ?

IMO, the Daughtry bass player also kicks ass. “There and Back Again” is better live than even on the CD and that is one of my favorite songs.

  54. What Daughtry concert did you go to SpenserJ?

    St. Petersburg, FL in April.

  55. AI6: Now what’s this I read on here about Phil being signed?

AI5: I’m off to tap class shortly but have to post that I’m tickled pink that my boy Elliott has moved up to number 6 on mediabase top 40. Like him or not it’s a Cinderella story for sure. He promoted the heck out of his single by hiting radio stations all over the country. Way to go Elliott!

AI4: Constantine still gives me the creeps.

AI3: Hearing Fantasia’s name still makes me a little queasy.

AI2: I dont even know who won that one – lol.

AI1: AHHH it was nice to have a Kelly/Clive free day!

I didn’t know you were a Daughtry fan? Very cool! What are your favorite songs off the Daughtry CD? My favorite songs are “Home”, “Crashed”, “Breakdown”, and “There and Back Again”.

It was great to learn that NOLA is a Nickelback fan and SpenserJ is a Daughtry fan.

  60. Spense is not necessarily a Daughtry fan. Spense-friend, who went to the AI concert with us in Tampa, is the Daughtry fan. She and I bonded over our mutual love for bald men and wallet chains.

  61. Oh. Well since SpenserJ talked about the musicians playing on the Daughtry CD and how they sounded versus what the band sounds live, I assumed she has the Daughtry CD and has been listening to it in order to make that statement about the band live vs what the musicians sound like on the CD.

Very cool that she thought the Daughtry drummer was awesome!

  62. Squish, I never said I was a Nickelback fan. I said they are very hot right now and are sitting at #9 on the Billboard 200 Chart. I said “gotta love ’em,” meaning, they are doing their thing and good for them.

What I dislike are other groups who try and emulate bands such as Nickleback. IMO, if you are going to do something, be original, not a cookie-cutter copycat, as I feel little d and his little boys are doing.

I’m actually a fan of my homies, 3 Doors Down.

  63. Spense is not necessarily a Daughtry fan. Spense-friend, who went to the AI concert with us in Tampa, is the Daughtry fan. She and I bonded over our mutual love for bald men and wallet chains.

LOL Sarah. It’s hard to describe my fan/non-fan status with Chris. And, I don’t usually like to go into it here for fear of sparking a fan war and giving MJ a headache.

But, here’s the short version of how I feel: I think he’s loaded with talent. And, I voted for him twice during his season. But – the CD – which yes I did purchase (my husband was a big Chris fan on the show – it was in his Xmas stocking) is a little too one-note for me. As Sarah said, Spense-friend is a Daughtry fan, and she has it in pretty heavy rotation at her house, so I’ve listened to it quite a bit. It’s not awful or anything – I just hoped for something a little more colorful.

Favorite song on the CD? I think “Crashed”.
Least Favorite? Definitely “It’s Not Over”

And yes, if I were Chris, I’d keep the drummer and replace the rest of the them.

  64. Let’s just say I don’t think Nickleback has to tattoo his name across his back to remember who he is.

IMO, this subject has gotten a lot of miles for not having been mentioned during the Headlines of the day.

  65. Very interesting that NOLA thinks that Nickelback is “original”. Who would have thought? :shock_tb:

  66. IMO, this subject has gotten a lot of miles for not having been mentioned during the Headlines of the day.

LOL Nola. Things do tend to veer off course don’t they?

Ya’ know what I wish? I wish we had some gosh darn Season 6 signing news. I want to know when we’re getting our CD’s and who we’re getting them from. You all remember this stuff much better than I do, but didn’t we already know this about some of them last year?

How are these people expecting to get a CD out by Thanksgiving if they don’t even know who they’re recording that CD with? I guess I’m being impatient, but this is annoying. Is this all because Jordin is only 17??!!!

  67. Spense, I agree. Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s make up our own Season 6 news!

I totally would, if not for fear of embarrassment when Kirsten shows back up and beats me down with her mad fiction skilz.

  68. It IS surprising that the Season 6 signing news isn’t here yet. At least we should have heard about Jordin and perhaps Blake by now.

  69. I have to agree, Nickelback isn’t original.

Then again, neither are little d and the Spice Boys, who imitate Nickelback, Live, and more than likely a few other bands.

What’s worse? To be derivative in the first degree, or to be derivative in the second, third, or fourth degree?

  70. There you go again Nevada, with the deep philosophical questions. It is just too late for me to think that hard. Perhaps Kirsten can help us with an algorithm?

  71. Like him or not ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a Cinderella story for sure. He promoted the heck out of his single by hiting radio stations all over the country. Way to go Elliott!

Are there really people out there who don’t like Elliott?

  73. Since Chris Daughtry is happy and super successful, I doubt he really cares what people think at this point about whether he is the 4th degree, 12th degree, or 30 degree derivative.

The bottom line he is kicking ass this year with the best selling CD of 2007 so far. He should be proud as we Chris fans are.

Wow! What a difference a year makes! You did good Daughtry!

  74. Great find Chicago-sally about Jordin signing with RCA (although that link doesn’t work)!

  75. Are there really people out there who donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t like Elliott?

    Yes there are.

Even though Elliott seems like a very sincere, likable, and super nice guy, I still don’t care for his voice at all.

  76. Since Chris Daughtry is happy and super successful, I doubt he really cares what people think at this point including whether he is the 4th degree, 12th degree, or 30 degree derivative.

Well, then I guess it’s a good thing that Chris doesn’t have to approve of our posts here.

  77. Wow! What a difference a year makes! You did good Daughtry!

Sure does. However, the more some things change, the more some things remain the same.

  78. Well, then I guess ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a good thing that Chris doesnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t have to approve of our posts here.

    Shocking, but true

  79. The life of the average rock band is 3-5 years.

One band in thousands survive beyond that…and of those that do manage to stay together, stay current, and still draw a crowd, only one band in a hundred manages the kind of success that qualifies as “super successful.”

Odds are, little d and the Spice Boys had to pay Nickelback for the honor & privilege of opening for them at various concerts this summer. And even if they didn’t have to pay-to-play, they’re almost certainly working for little or no money, surviving on tour support derived from CD sales.

Police, the Rolling Stones, U2, Rod Stewart, Justin Timberlake, Billy Joel….those are “super successful” acts.

  80. Since Chris Daughtry is happy and super successful, I doubt he really cares what people think at this point including whether he is the 4th degree, 12th degree, or 30 degree derivative

LOL. Daughtry as a 30th order polynomial. Excuse me.

Sorry. This has been a bad week for math on the blog.

  81. Police, the Rolling Stones, U2, Rod Stewart, Justin Timberlake, Billy Joelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.those are à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“super successfulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ acts.

    Who?

  82. LOL. Daughtry as a 30th order polynomial. Excuse me.

See, I don’t even think I know what that means.

    Billy Joelà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.those are à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“super successfulà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ acts.

Over 150 Million albums sold, so yep I think he qualifies.

  83. If Daughtry only lasts for 3-5 years than he can always say, “I had the number 1 album of 2007, showed that 4th is the truly the new 1st, I lived out my dream of playing for thousands of fans as well as writing my own music, and I had a hell of a ride while it lasted!”

That is more than 99.9% of rock bands out there can say!

    Brava!

(I personally wouldn’t put Justin Timberlake in the same category as the Police, the Rolling Stones, U2, or Rod Stewart :ponder_tb:).

  84. See, I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t even think I know what that means.

Don’t feel bad, I doubt little dà ¢’ž ¢ does either. LMAO

Sorry. This has been a bad week for math on the blog.

I was using degree more in a legal sense, Kirsten. Murder in the first or second degree…you know.

Or I suppose it could be like a burn (pun intended) with a fourth degree burn being very bad news indeed.

  86. he can always say, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I had the number 1 album of 2007, showed that 4th is the trully the new 1st

And he would prove what many have thought, he is an arrogant, pompous ass.

  87. Found on Pulse, the mid-year tour numbers:

    Compiled Using 11/15/-06-5/15/07 Boxscores

    1. Justin Timberlake: $52.187 million- 694,612/694,612- 50/50
    2. Christina Aguilera: $43.566 million- 559,870/579,348- 59/0
    3. Rod Stewart: $38.504 million- 467,229/477,864- 40/33
    4. Billy Joel: $35.742 million- 378,995/379,313- 26/25
    5. U2: $33.048 million- 374,723/374,723- 9/9
    6. Trans-Siberian Orchestra: $33.031 million- 796,776/844,476- 83/58
    7. Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band: $30.75 million- 477,162/477,162- 36/36
    8. Aerosmith: $26.216 million- 390,355/488,780- 20/3
    9. High School Musical-The Concert: $25.424 million- 485,570/522,104- 42/5
    10. Eric Clapton: $24.551 million- 290,556/295,893- 23/17

Yeah, I can see why Timberlake wouldn’t run with the big dogs…..

  88. Chris never said that 4th is the new 1st (we Chris fans say it and believe it) but Elliott said that “3rd is the new 1st” in the EW article that came out last week.

Is Elliott now considered an “arrogant and pompous ass”?

Okay – do people actually say this? I thought it was just a blog joke. Is this a common thing other places?

Because it doesn’t make any actual sense. Nothing is the new 1st. Placement is constant. 1st is always first. Even when it’s Jordin Sparks.

    —————————-
definitely need an emoticon showing drink spewing out of ones mouth. LOL.

  92. Justin Timberlake doesn’t have the longevity that U2, the Rollingstones, Rod Stewart, etc have. I still wouldn’t put him in that category and I am sure he would put himself in the same league with those big dogs either.

Neither would Christina Augilera who also made a hell of a lot of money.

  93. So NOLA saying “4th is the new 1st” (which Chris never said) makes an Idol an arrogant and pompass ass but saying “3rd is the new 1st” does not?

  94. So NOLA saying à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“4th is the new 1stà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ makes an Idol an arrogant and pompass ass but saying à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“3rd is the new 1stà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ does not?

…I was always told that actions speak louder than words.

  95. While I am not a Justin fan myself, it wouldnt surprise me for him to have longevity in this business. He has done really well with his transition from boy-bander to solo artist.

  96. While I am not a Justin fan myself, it wouldnt surprise me for him to have longevity in this business. He has done really well with his transition from boy-bander to solo artist.

Yeah, I agree, but I still think his music is mostly carp, lol.

  97. Wow, I haven’t heard the longevity argument since the scary boards…but I always found it ironic that an Idol fan would raise that issue when there is no guarantee that any of them will be around in 10 years.

To the contrary, evidence suggests that the majority of the Idol finalists peak fairly quickly and then fade away…

Only Kelly’s sophomore album outsold her first, and yet the jury is still out on the third.

Even Carrie could have a hard time matching her debut numbers, much less surpassing them. Does lightning strike twice?

    Time will tell.

  98. So NOLA saying à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“4th is the new 1stà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (which Chris never said) makes an Idol an arrogant and pompass ass

Okay, we’ve established that Chris never said that. Elliott said what he said in jest. You have established that Chris fans say it and believe it. I say that anyone who says it and “believes it” has a lack of understanding for the progression of integers. But, that’s just my humble opinion.

  99. Is the criteria for “super successfull” have to do with just making millions and millions of dollars in concert revenue or is it longevity as well?

I think to be in the league of U2 or the Rollingstones, an artist would have to have a career that spanned decades and not just one in which concerts grossed millions of dollars in one year as Justin Timberlake’s and Christina Augilera’s did.

I am sure Britney Spears made just as much as Justin Timberlake has in concert revenue in her last concert tour yet I would never even consider putting her in the same league as U2.

  100. I was using degree more in a legal sense, Kirsten. Murder in the first or second degreeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦you know.

But others took it into a bad place.

Bandicide in the 30th degree. LOL

    (now I’m abusing the law).

  101. Either way, little d and the Spice Boys do not qualify as “super successful.”

They have no longevity and they aren’t making millions of dollars in concert revenues.

  102. Very true Nevada. I will just put Chris in the category of “successful” since he does have the number 1 album of 2007 so far.

Whether Chris has a 2 year career or a 20 year career, that fact if it indeed happens can never be taken away from him.

If his career would end right after his debut album, Chris can always look back and say “I had a hell of a ride.”

  103. since he does have the number 1 album of 2007 so far.

Really? Because, ya know, if I didn’t actually read this twice a day, every day, I would totally forget.

  104. Personally, I don’t think that success can be quantified simply by numbers….but to each their own, I suppose.

  105. I am sure Britney Spears made just as much as Justin Timberlake has in concert revenue in her last concert tour yet I would never even consider putting her in the same league as U2.

So, lets see what we’ve learned from these discussions…

Timberlake is not in the same league as U2. (as per squishy)
Britney is not in the same league as Timberlake. (as per squishy)
daughtry is not in the same league as Britney. (me)

dcd, you forgot to add, “so far.”

There are 19 more weeks in the 2007 Billboard year and 23 more weeks in the 2007 calendar year.

Don’t be popping those corks quite yet…

  110. Mr. D has yet to prove he’s anymore more than a copy-cat Nickleback act. Since he has no originality, I have doubts he’ll make it past 2 years. Rock groups simply do. not. last. beyond that unless you bring something new and original to the table – when the next flavor of the month comes along or the trends vary and evolve and you don’t change with the tide, you’re dead in the water.
    ——–
Squishy said: “If his career would end right after his debut album, Chris can always look back and say à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I had a hell of a ride.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

And I say – So can everyone else who ever stepped foot on that idol stage.

  111. Who knows, perhaps Daughtry may not have the #1 CD of the Calendar year 2007 but perhaps just of the Billboard year getting the Billboard Album of the year award.

    Time will tell…

But he is still having a hell of a ride!

Who would have thought a 4th place AI finisher would have been doing so well!

  112. Can someone tell me how Justin isn’t super successful?

Not even counting the album sales, and the sold out shows… DIAB was also nominated for an Emmy.

  113. But he is still having a hell of a ride!

    ….ain’t “fame” by association grand?

  114. Can someone tell me how Justin isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t super successful?

Not really no. Since the kid’s been getting regular paychecks in show business since he was a child and is now bringing in those kinds of tour revenues? Nope, sure can’t. And, he’s not even 30. Since all of his old bandmates appear to not need any money, I’m assuming his NSynch days were pretty profitable as well.

Sorry, can’t come up with a reason why he’s not super successful.

  115. Can someone tell me how Justin isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t super successful?

I think we can count him as super successful. He’s been a successful recording artist for 12 years. He sells boatloads of CDs. He does well in concerts. He’s even crossed over to a couple of movies. He’s got the sales, he’s got a degree of longevity. He’s a household name.

I don’t know. It seems to be that most people agree.

  116. If the definition of “super successful” are artists such as U2, the Rollingstones, Rod Stewart, than those artists have not only sold millions upon millions of albums and generated millions upon millions of concert revenue but their careers have spanned decades. Thus longevity is very important.

Justin Timberlake may down the road have a career that spans decades but right now he doesn’t. Thus I wouldn’t put him in that category as of yet.

    Perhaps one day for Justin…

  117. Can someone tell me how Justin isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t super successful?

Not even counting the album sales, and the sold out showsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ DIAB was also nominated for an Emmy.

He is successful *now*. I see nothing about him that reads he’ll be any sort of a force 5 years from now – and I put Little D in that category as well, although D isn’t *anywhere* in the same league as Timblerlake currently.

All you have to do is look at music trends over the past 40 years. Only a handful of solo artists and groups last beyond that. There are far more performers who lay low and produce albums to a steady fan base than aren’t swayed by musical Top 40 trends. They aren’t at the top of the charts, but they continue to make a decent living.

  118. First – I’m not a Timberlake fan, and I own no Timberlake CD’s. BUT – I see nothing to indicate that he’ll be some kind of footnote in 5 years time. Hell, in 5 years he’ll probably have an Oscar.

  119. Yep Justin Timberlake could win an Oscar down the road. He is very talented IMO.

Again time will tell on Justin but for now I wouldn’t put him in the same category as U2 or the Rollingstones.

  120. Blake wears fugly hats and is the weakest singer to reach the AI top 2.

  121. Okay, just like McPhee, I’m over it.

So – do we know if PJ arrived safely in Seattle? I wonder what mischief those girls are up to tonight?

  122. It’s Friday in part of this world, so I call it Tacoma concert day.

So, which home-boy is going to get a larger reaction from the crowd? Sanjaya “The Hair” Malakar or Blake “The Hat” Lewis?

    And will anybody cry?

  123. Nevada Jul 27th, 2007 at 12:37 am

Either way, little d and the Spice Boys do not qualify as à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“super successful.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

They have no longevity and they arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t making millions of dollars in concert revenues.

From what we have learned from all credible sources, little “d” and his blurry band are not making any money from touring yet. He lost money on the solo bar gigs and is now an opener for Nickelback. He may sell more CDs but its Clive that benefits from CD sales. Chris’s recoupment bill for radio support, videos and tour support will be hanging over his head for a long time yet. If the average shelf life of a band is 3 to 5 years, he could potentially be lucky to come out of it debt free unless he starts touring solo and making a profit. The band members are making a steady paycheck. little “d”, not so much.
