‘Idol’s taking over Nashville!’

It’s Saturday morning, 5:30 a.m., in Nashville. At 5th Avenue and Broadway, the streets are packed for a full block in three directions. “I hear they’re about at capacity, ” a guard standing near by one of the barricades says, referring to the size of the Bridgestone Arena, which seats about 19, 000 people.

Randee Reed, 23, a bill collector from Cleveland, Tenn., and Frederick Steinhauser, a 24-year-old full-time student from Clyde, Ohio, are at the front of the line — you can tell, because they’re standing right behind a banner that says, “FRONT OF LINE” — having waited all night outside the arena.

“Amazing turnout, ” Patrick says. He’s not sure if his crowd will break 20, 000 — “we’re still registering people, ” he says, adding, “We’re running out of real estate.”

The Idol auditions are going down in Nashville today. Brian Mansfield from Idol Chatter will be covering it all day. Check it out HERE. Read more HERE.

According to Brian, Shelby Dressler is auditioning again, and plans to relocate to Nashville soon.

Melissa Etheridge, on the road again

Q. Do you think it’s easier for artists now?

I would like to hope so. The difficulty lies inside them. How much are you willing to not be like everybody else and still insist that your art is good enough, and that people want to hear it no matter where you come from? It starts inside you. I think Adam Lambert, he’s kind of, “Hey, this is what I am.” You can feel the tentativeness in it, and I understand that. But if the music is good, it relates past that.

To replace Larry King, Britain offers its least edgy talk-show host

If Piers Morgan’s autobiography The Insider is to be believed, then Tony Blair has a future as a soothsayer. “You should go into TV full time, ” the British Prime Minister told the then-just-sacked editor of The Mirror newspaper in 2004, and added, “I think you interview very well.” And lo, six years later, it looks like that prophecy might come to pass, as Morgan is now tipped to fill Larry King’s chair at CNN. Too bad Blair wasn’t as prescient about the Middle East.

Is Morgan, in fact, “very good at interviewing?” Well, that depends on how you feel about Barbara Walters’s skills, since Morgan fulfils a similar role in British culture – he’s the one who gets celebrity tear ducts flowing. And when he does, the headlines follow.

The Plan to Reinvent King’s Show

And Neil may be right. CNN is surely hoping for more interviews like the one Morgan had with Gordon Brown earlier this year. He persuaded the then beleaguered Prime Minister to appear onto his sparse set and got him to discuss the tragic death of his and his wife’s first child, Jennifer. Even if it didn’t change the election, it was the TV moment of the year and a powerful performance for the usually dour Mr. Brown.

While nothing is official yet, a source close to the deal says that it’s only a matter of days after months of negotiations before everything is finalized. The appeal of Morgan, says a source, is that the former editor is not going to be a new Larry King, but will instead want to create a show that brings US audiences the forensic, thoroughly researched approach of his interview show in the UK, which features a markedly sparse set and often family members in the audience (most notably when Sarah Brown was seen crying during the Gordon interview). This will be a marked contrast to King who famously skimps on preparation for his encounters. Michael Hirschorn, owner of Ish entertainment and contributing editor of The Atlantic Monthly, agrees that “Piers Morgan can interview people, and the thing that he also does have is access, in terms of able to ring people up and get them on.”
