Pre-Show Q&A: Jordin Sparks

The youngest American Idol winner, singer Jordin Sparks was only 17 when she was crowned champ of the 2007 competition. The obligatory self-titled album followed, and thanks to its three hit singles, it eventually went platinum. Last year, Sparks released her sophomore effort, Battlefield, which debuted in Billboard’s Top 10 and established the R&B/pop singer as a legitimate star. More mature sounding than her debut, it puts Sparks in competition with divas like Christina Aguilera and Celine Dion. Sparks, who makes her Broadway debut this summer in In the Heights, is currently headlining her own damn tour (she plays House of Blues tomorrow night) and has paired with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer to make it at least partly a charitable crusade. —Jeff Niesel

Sarah McLachlan on American Idol, Her Kids and Why She’s Happier Than You Think

Sarah McLachlan may have sold a gazillion or so records over the years, but what if American Idol was around when she first started out? Would she have auditioned for the show?

Probably not…

“I would have failed dismally, ” McLachlan recently told me during a recent trip to Los Angeles to promote her new album, Laws of Illusion, out today. “It’s too much pressure. I would never have put myself in that situation in the first place. I just wouldn’t have felt comfortable doing it.”

See ‘Idol’s’ Bucky Covington today at free Santa Rosa concert

It certainly doesn’t seem like a place where any “American Idol” alum would perform — the Stony Point Grill. But that is where AI Season 5 eighth-place finisher Bucky Covington will be at 5 p.m. today for a free concert sponsored by radio station KFGY (Froggy) 92.9 FM.

And it won’t be the most unusual venue ever for Covington in his relatively short musical career.

“I’ve actually played at a tractor supply company before. Sometimes it happens where a radio station will line up with a sponsor and in this case the station got the supply company to come up with the sponsor money, I guess. There were 400 or 500 people there. I think it was in the Midwest somewhere.
