Idol is never idle

IN THE nearly six years since Carrie Underwood was crowned American Idol winner, she has focused firmly on building her career in the US.

And it has paid off, with five Grammy Awards and more than 13 million albums sold.

But Underwood is looking further afield, hence her first visit to Australia this week.

“I just think it’s time for something new, broaden the horizons, ” she says from her Nashville home.

“If anything, it’s purely selfish. It’s not like, ‘OK, I’m done here, moving on’, you know. I just want to do things I haven’t already done and have fun with it.”

Interview: Tim Halperin Discusses The Making of “The Last Song” Music Video

Much has happened since I last spoke with Halperin earlier this year. He released “The Last Song” as a free mp3 download right after his run on Idol ended, which led to a unique opportunity with radio DJ, Kidd Kraddick.Tim Halperin in “The Last Song.” In between going on his Piano Tour and participating in Kidd Kraddick’s “Idol Got It Wrong” competition, Halperin raised $8, 000 via Kickstarter to fund the intriguing and visually stunning music video for “The Last Song, ” which premiered on June 6.

Watch Halperin’s music video for “The Last Song” below, and then check out my extensive Q&A session conducted last week with the singer-songwriter about the making of “The Last Song” music video, his participation in “Idol Got It Wrong, ” and what he thought about this season’s American Idol results.

Not to draw comparisons or anything (we would never!), but if it’s good enough for Mariah Carey, it’s apparently good enough for Jennifer Lopez.

X Factor: A letter to America

Dear America:

Hello from England. I hope you don’t mind me writing. I was undecided as to whether I should get in touch, but I am afraid I have seen some of your future, and think I should prepare you. For the last nine years I have lived with what you will soon encounter. I have choked on the tears you are yet to shed. The names of the fallen – The Conway Sisters, Voices With Soul, Jamie Afro – are etched on my brain. But I have survived The X Factor, and you must too.

Glee Boss Wants The Boss, Bruce Springsteen, to Guest Star

Are you going to change any of the cast in season three?
We aren’t going to change the entire cast, but some of the cast will graduate. I just think we would be missing a beat if we didn’t acknowledge the fact that a huge part of high school is graduating from high school, and that’s going to give us a lot of stuff to write to in season three. Every time we bring in a new character it’s worked out really well, we’ve been very fortunate. We get to sort of start new—we get to bring in new characters and write new storylines. That was one of the big surprises of season two, the new characters just seemed like they had been there together forever. So bringing in new characters will allow us a little more flexibility and will add to the longevity of the show.
