5, 812 votes for Jordin

Our family has been following Jordin Sparks since we first saw her perform during a Friday night kids’ talent show at Mr. Lucky’s, alongside my own grandchildren. Jordin was a cheerful, vivacious 12-year-old who was kind enough to give this great-grandma a debut CD.

We all just knew she would be famous! Her voice was amazing and she had a great personality. During these last few months on American Idol, I am proud to say that I voted 5, 812 times. Yes, I kept count!

Amid all the negativity that our young people see day in and day out, Jordin brings a breath of fresh air to old and young alike. We are all proud of you, Jordin, and we hope The Republic will continue bringing us coverage on our idol!

Classic Clip: CANNIBAL CORPSE Hits German Version Of ‘American Idol’

A video clip of a death metal fan auditioning for the German “American Idol”-style singing contest TV show “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” (“DSDS”) with a unique rendition of the CANNIBAL CORPSE classic “I Will Kill You” is available for viewing at YouTube.

As previously reported, a hilarious video clip of a black metal fan performing the NAGLFAR track “The Brimstone Gate” on the Austrian TV show “Starmania” can be found at this location. The lyrics to the song are as follows:

¦I have seen the most beautiful light
Since my birth it’s been possessing my mind
I’ve lashed myself, I have opened my veins
Cursed my blood in grief
As a shadow of death, the reaper from the tales of past
I’ve been lurking in the shades of Thy creation ¦

‘Sgt. Pepper’s lasting power

…”I don’t think there is any historical parallel, ” said Tim Riley, author of Tell Me Why, a song-by-song take on the band. “When the Beatles were out there, I don’t think there was anything like it. The things that come closest only illustrate that. Star Wars sort of hinted at it. Today, what’s going on with American Idol is similar. It’s like everyone knows, everyone’s in on this story. . . . But it doesn’t even come close to what was going on with the Beatles.”

The music was central, of course. But the excitement went beyond the songs…

Young crowd reveres ‘Idol’

Imagine, if you will, a combination of elements from “Bye, Bye Birdie, ” “A Chorus Line, ” “Fame, ” “The Breakfast Club” and “High School Musical” – with a higher quotient of sexual humor.

Further imagine such elements mixing in a story on the social effects of Clay Aiken and you pretty much have a fix on “Idol: The Musical.”

The work, with music and lyrics by Jon Balcourt and book and lyrics by Bill Boland, from a concept by producer Todd Ellis, had a first performance Friday before a highly reactive and appreciative crowd.

“Idol” is about an improbable group of high school seniors, evidently bound together by their worshipful devotion to “American Idol” second season second-placer Clay Aiken….

CLAY AIKEN, the American Idol super-graduate, stole the show by singing at Arnold Schwarzenegger’s appearance at the Stanley Park Pavilion Thursday. With Premier Gordon Campbell humming along, the California governor preached the green-way mantra other politicos have suddenly taken to heart. But a far older theme — a star is born –played later when Aiken dined with homegrown music-biz biggie David Foster at Umberto Menghi’s Il Giardino restaurant.

  3. The New Tributes, and an Old Triangle

HAVE all the great songs already been written? That might justify the latest outpouring of tributes and tribute albums: remakes, with and without conceptual overlay, of material that other musicians admire but arenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t afraid to transform. In the age of the sample, the remix and countless YouTube parodies, entire songs and sometimes entire albums are still being recycled and reclaimed, and musicians are presenting themselves as critics, curators and à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ above all à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ fans….

… On tribute albums, musicians show the world the songs they care about. But with the narcissism that every artist needs, they assert that they see themselves reflected in their idols. When a tribute album works best, musicians reveal both what they learned and how they made it their own….

  7. Zimmer mania: Talkin ’bout MY generation

They’ve a combined age of 3,000, enough wrinkles for a herd of elephants and can’t run fast enough to escape the groupies. No, not the Rolling Stones – but the very unlikely rock stars set to be No.1 on Sunday

Abbey Road Studios and it’s business as usual – banks of microphones line one wall, electric cables snake everywhere and the floor is throbbing as the band stamps and growls and thrashes out The Who’s My Generation, for the hundredth time.

Business as usual, that is – except the band in question are The Zimmers. The man snarling angrily into the mike – reading glasses on and false teeth out – is 90-year-old Alfie Carretta. ‘People try to put us down. . . Grrr.’

And crashing about on the keyboards and singing like a mad thing is whitehaired Winifred Warburton, 99. ‘I hope I die before I get old . . .’

Oh, and the bearded thug giving everyone the finger is Buster Martin – at 101, the oldest working man in Britain.

David Foster has friends in high places.

As for that famed runner-up from American Idol, Clay Aiken? Well, a playful Foster dances around the rumor that Aiken will be performing at the Calgary concert, but he did manage to bring the pop star into town Friday to perform at a private backyard party for the foundation.

Why wasn’t Aiken at the Friday afternoon press conference, held downtown at the new Wild Ginger restaurant? “Clay likes to sleep late,” explains a dapper Foster, posing for pictures at his keyboard as the conference wraps up.

“But he’s a wonderful friend of the Foundation and he loves Canada. . . . He’s just here to help.”

  9. Oooh, I like the idea of a new “Saturday Morning Pinup” feature. It can be something to look forward to now that Dave White is gone! Good Morning everyone.

  10. We shouldn’t forget that we have our very own ‘Pin Ups’.
    Dave, RSF and Rippin.

  11. Hmmm…this fight between Kelly and Clive is getting interesting. I’m no great fan of Clive after his “brilliant” idea of having Clay re-sing the most re-sung songs in the universe as a follow-up album….but on Kelly, I think he’s right.

IMO Breakaway sold a lot of records based largely on the success of the song Breakaway. Everyone seems to forget that this Disney-esque, highly contagious song, was the engine that started the train to multi-platinum. The other songs were good, but without Breakaway, I wonder what the total albums sold would have been.

Never Again is not nearly as good as any song on the Breakway album. And Kelly’s attitude of “so what if this album doesn’t sell well, I want to make it” isn’t helping. If she really wanted to have complete creative control, she should have started her own label…which might yet happen. We’ll see.

I like Kelly and will buy a copy of whatever she puts out (even if I never listen to it), but think she is treading very dangerous grounds here…

  14. I actually think that “Since U Been Gone” rather than the song “Breakaway” was the song that made the “Breakaway” album the huge success that it became. Of course ALL the hit songs contributed but IMO it was “Since U Been Gone” that REALLY got the ball rolling.

I agree that Clive is often wrong (ie Clay Aiken’s album) but in Kelly Clarkson’s case with “My December” he may be right. “Never Again” is NO “Breakaway” or “Since U Been Gone” that can sell millions of albums just on that one song alone. However, from the snippets I heard I think the album overall appears to be good and probably will sell overall well. I personally like the song “Sober”.

IMO, I see this album for more of an “older” music listener than what “Breakaway” was which attracted preteens to older folks. I see it as more of a personal growth/journey for Kelly.

  16. Good morning Lisa B! Thanks, as always for all the great articles. Wow – that Ace picture… I cant believe I actually hugged that man!

  17. IMO, I see this album for more of an à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“olderà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ music listener than what à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Breakawayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was which attracted preteens to older folks. I see it as more of a personal growth/journey for Kelly.

Well, I like some of Kelly’s hits from Breakaway, but I don’t own the album. I mean, I can still hear it on commercial top 40 radio station.

I must be one of the older music listeners because I do like what I’ve heard of Kelly’s new album. My Hubby calls it “angry chick rock”. I like angry chick rock, heh.

Personally, I think she should be allowed to try this. It may not be the commercial success that Breakaway was, but it’s something different and makes her happy as an artist.

  18. Wow! Lisa, you need to put a warning label on that Ace picture. I spit Diet Coke everywhere.

  21. I can’t believe all the money I spend on Elvis gear is going to go right into Mr. Simon Fullers pockets. Does anyone know if he’s married?

  22. I actually think that à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Since U Been Goneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ rather than the song à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Breakawayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ was the song that made the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Breakawayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ album the huge success that it became. Of course ALL the hit songs contributed but IMO it was à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Since U Been Goneà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ that REALLY got the ball rolling.

Squishy, Since U Been Gone was the single that TPTB put their money (and lots of it) behind. They must have had Kelly sing that at 1000 events before it “caught on”. Breakaway was a natural hit. They needed SUBG to catch on though, because they wanted to present Kelly as the “rocker-chick-song-writer” for the grammys. I didn’t follow the course of her sales so can’t tell you how far the song Breakaway got her before they forced SUBG into our collective minds.

I think the song Breakaway started the momentum and Since U Been Gone sent her cd through the roof. The other songs were good for sustaining the cd but Breakaway and Since U Been Gone were the two songs that made you pay attention to the cd.

Unfortunately, I cannot say I am surprised about what Kelly is going through. I’ve always felt that it would have been better if her cds were not so instantly successful. Especially coming from show like AI. Where it seems as if the true measure of their talent is done by cd sales and not by them as REAL artist. I had a feeling that by the time Kelly was ready for some serious writing control she would have a battle on her hand because it tough gaining the respect as a real artist when you come off a show where producers and writers are all lined up just waiting for the next generic singer to walk off that AI stage.

I am not being insulting. I’m being honest. I’ve always felt that it would have been better for artist like Kelly to sell cds in a moderate fashion. Especially coming from a show like AI. They are about making money using these singers as the face and vocal of someone else’s work. Being insantly successful means that if these singers want to be taken seriously as writers they are going to have to fight for it. Either in the beginning or in the end. Even Chris are Carrie are going to have a hardtime when their turn come. Contrary to what some might want to believe. Even with all the hype they are getting for writing and co-writing their individual cd. When it’s all said and done, these singers are just singers in the eyes of TPTB. They are not considered real artist because they did not come on board the record company in the manner in which most real artist come on board. They success was not built by trial and error or by them really paying their dues as far as the industry is concerned. Their success was built by a tv show with an already built in fanbase and professional writers and producers. I would not be surprise if they’re already have writers lined up to create Carrie’s second cd. Just to make sure that selling momentum generated by this first cd continues..

  24. I canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t believe all the money I spend on Elvis gear is going to go right into Mr. Simon Fullers pockets. Does anyone know if heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s married?

    He’s not married.

  25. Since Chris already wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on his debut album and he said in a recent interview that his sophomore album will have songs with melodies that people can sing too as well as harder stuff, similar to his debut album because that is who he is, I doubt he will have as hard of a time at it as Kelly for his sophomore album because it won’t be as much of a departure (ie really hard rock songs) as his debut one.

Carrie, who didn’t write most of her songs on her debut album, may have a harder time with her sophomore album if she does strive for creative control. However, at this point, Carrie appears to be happy with things and may not battle with TPTB over her sophomore album.

  26. Holy batman! Throws Taylor under the bus.

Ace, c’mere baby. OMG he’s smokin’.

  27. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not married.

Okay, so I still have a chance to marry into that. Awesome.
Oh and btw, I thought Ace didn’t want that picture popping up on sites (I don’t know why, he really has nothing to be ashamed of.)

  28. I doubt he will have as hard of a time at it as Kelly for his sophomore album because it wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be as much of a departure (ie really hard rock songs) as his debut one.

If the sound Chris wants to go for doesn’t sound like the rock music that’s hot right now (Nickelback,Hinder) then I see him having a hard time with it if he decides to go less mainstream as with what Kelly did.

  29. I think people are forgetting that the song “Breakaway” wasn’t even on the original album. It was first on the Princess Diaries 2 soundtrack (so, yeah, of COURSE it’s Disney-esque) and after it was released, it garnered a rather large audience. So, I believe it was then decided to include that song on the album and the album was subsquently named “Breakaway”.

Anyway, I personally think SUBG helped propel the album to success as much as “Breakaway” did. I believe I first heard it on the radio in like September (?) before the cd was released in December, and it was STILL playing on the big top 40 radio station out of Memphis that I listened to well into like February and March.

So, in essence, she had 2 huge singles going into the sales of this album. I remember that a couple friends of mine who are big fans were “really worried” that SUBG would not go over well with her “core audience”, especially when she described it as “Miss Independent” with more of a rock edge. Um, lol. We see how that turned out.

I really don’t care if “My December” doesn’t match the commercial success of “Breakaway”. This is the album she wanted to make, felt she needed to make, and fought for. All artists have to grow, and if they don’t challenge themselves and try new things, it’s just going to get boring, and then NO ONE will be interested.

From what I’ve heard so far, this album sounds like it might get a lot of critical acclaim. Yeah, it’ll take longer to catch on without the strength of some huge, hook-filled single. But I like it when artists stand up for what they want and what they believe in, and for that alone, Kelly has my support. Period. End of story.

Oh, and that picture of Ace? :bigsurprise_ee:

Female singers searching for stardom can’t rely on hot vocals alone. In today’s society, they need sultry looks too.

NEW YORK — – She was an “amazing talent,” a young singer with a wonderful voice who wrote beautiful songs. But she was no beauty, plus flat-chested and overweight to boot.

Remembering the aspiring star, music executive Jody Gerson still feels terrible about thinking: “She’s never going to get signed, even though she’s fabulous.”

Gerson might feel even worse after the exit of the matronly Melinda Doolittle from American Idol. In today’s music industry, plain Janes need not apply. Sex appeal was once considered a bonus for a woman; now it’s practically a requirement.

  32. That Gerson article has been doing the rounds since Melinda left the competition.

  33. Sarah is correct.

“Breakaway” was NOT the lead off single from Kelly’s sophmore CD. The lead off single was “Since U Been Gone.”

“Breakaway” was a single off of Disney’s Princess Diaries 2 soundtrack- which had HUGE success the label capitalized off of it. All the promotion for the song “Breakaway”, the video, everything was paid for by Disney.

  35. An article about Jordin from MTV.com

American Idol’ Champ Jordin Sparks Wants Chris Brown, Mario On Debut

“I’d love to do a duet with Mario or Chris Brown … but let’s see what happens,” she said. “I have a lot of work ahead of me. I have a deadline [for my album] already. It should be out before Thanksgiving. And I’m going to be doing the tour and trying to find songs at the same time. And then after the tour, it’s gonna be record, record, record, write, write, write.”

  36. THANK YOU for the Ace picture! WOW! The thoughts I am having right now…. :embarrassed_ee:

  37. “The other day, I walked outside, and there were these two little girls out there, and they said, ‘Jordin, you’re my inspiration! I want to be like you!,’ and it was so amazing,” she said. “I get emotional about it, because I remember being a little girl and looking up to people. And now little girls are looking up to me, and I love it.

I can remember Katharine saying much the same this time last year.

  38. After seeing Chris’ sales, they will be pressing hard to have it out for thanksgiving weekend and christmas weekend to get the million in sales.

  39. Wow, it’s a busy news day for a Saturday. Thanks for the links, Lisa – and thanks for posting the pic. :)

It should be out before Thanksgiving. And Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m going to be doing the tour and trying to find songs at the same time. And then after the tour, ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s gonna be record, record, record, write, write, write.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

Mario and Chris Brown…hmm, a contemporary R&B leaning to her album then?? And has it been suggested that Jordin writes songs? I doubt she does, but she seems to be implying that…

    ETA:

I can remember Katharine saying much the same this time last year.

I have a hunch that Jordin’s idea of being an inspiration to young girls – I think her being an inspiration will be short lived as a whole anyways – will not include looking like a Maxim wannabe.

Dave White isn’t gone; he isn’t posting AI recaps because the season is over.

I’m having a hard time understanding what is so wrong with these pictures. Katharine looks gorgeous in them, and Vegas magazine asked her to be their cover girl. What is the big deal?

And I still don’t quite know what is so wrong about Maxim magazine, Kat could be on the cover of that magazine in a second if she wanted to, almost every female celebrity has, it’s a mag about sexy women, and much more, why would this be such a bad thing if she were in it?

I just don’t get what the big deal is.

  46. I just donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get what the big deal is.

Firstly, it’s snark. Kat lends herself to such snarky comments very, very easily.

Secondly, I personally do not find Maxim covers or Kat’s Vegas pictures sexy – my definition of “sexy” does not include provocative and trashy.

My point was merely to differentiate between Jordin and Kat’s idea of being an inspiration to young girls – and to snark on Kat. ;). Plus, I don’t believe that being on the cover of Maxim is a healthy aspiration for young girls. In this regard, I hope such photos don’t inspire a young girl somewhere to follow in Kat’s footsteps.

    ETA:

I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think her pre-teen fans are going to be scarred by these pictures.

The point isn’t being scarred, it’s the potential for emulation that bothers me most, especially if you’ve set yourself up an an inspiration for young girls.

  47. Kat has legions of fans, young and old. Everyone has an opinion and that’s fine, I just don’t see any problem with her pictures, not all of them are seductive. I don’t think her pre-teen fans are going to be scarred by these pictures.

Anyway there is no way for me to make a point here, but I love all of these pictures, and I hope she keeps on with the modeling, she really looks fabulous.

I don’t think Kat is “targeting” anyone in particular either, she’s just trying to sing and make people happy.

You should watch her new video blog she made for her fans, it’s really sweet.

  48. I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t think her pre-teen fans are going to be scarred by these pictures.

You may not but their parents may think so, children grow up far too soon as it is without copying the provocative poses and manners that Katharine displays at photo opportunities.

  49. Well I am not a mother, so maybe that’s why I don’t get what the problem is. I would hope young girls wouldn’t be looking at Vegas magazine anyway, but if so I honestly don’t think they would be like, “Oh look it’s Katharine, I want to look like that and pose like that.” I mean it’s a picture, I don’t think kids these days are that stupid. But then again I’m a very liberal person, and probably just don’t think the way that you all do.

I do however strongly disagree that her pictures are trashy, she might look provocative in them, but she does not look trashy at all. She looks amazing. I realize a lot of this is Kat snark, and I’m used to that and I’m sure it’s great fun, but I don’t think you are giving kids enough credit in this situation. I think they are smarter than looking at a magazine cover and saying oh I want to be like that. It’s just pictures, not real life.

  50. If kids are going to be turned by a simple photograph on a magazine that’s only featured in vegas, i hate to see what happens when they turn on the television and are subjected to rap videos, the pussycat dolls, haleys legs, csi and they’re “every woman wears a low cut top when wearing” objective.
Katharine is not the only one wearing “suggestive” attire, or posing “provactively”. Judging by some of the comments here you’d think ever other entertainer is Jesus and Katharine is poor poor Mary Magdalene.

  51. yep either Jordin or Blake will have their debut album out Thanksgiving weekend.

  52. Plus I hate hate HATE the double standard, look at people drooling over Aces shirtless picture, then condeming Katharine for her pictures where she is wearing more clothes.
Are young boys looking at these pictures and going oh no I have to look like that!!! And going out and working out 24/7?

  53. Plus I hate hate HATE the double standard, look at people drooling over Aces shirtless picture, then condeming Katharine for her pictures where she is wearing more clothes.
Are young boys looking at these pictures and going oh no I have to look like that!!! And going out and working out 24/7?

    WORD.

  54. I see NOTHING wrong with Kat’s pic. Kat is hot no doubt about it and so is Ace.

  55. Actually Ace has been very careful to be considered child friendly ever since he started his journey on AI.

I believe that pic is pre Idol.

  56. Actually Ace has been very careful to be considered child friendly ever since he started his journey on AI.

Yeah..he’s never worn clothes that ever show off his body.

  57. I never said there was anything wrong with Katharine’s pictures it all depends on the market she’s trying to sell herself to.

  58. I think this started out as will Jordin be a good role model. Jordin is very cute but not”sexy.” Her Christian background and committment to virginity will keep her from any racy photo shoots.I just can’t see them “sexing” her up. Kat is very beautiful and I’m assuming will keep the glamorous photo shoots going. To be honest, that’s about the only reason the media is still interested in her.

  59. Yeah..heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s never worn clothes that ever show off his body.

    I wouldn’t know.

  60. Star, thanks for that video. I hadn’t seen it before. The Maroon 5 bit was funny. I wonder if it was a similar situation with Blake and them as Taylor and Ray L. :lol_tb:

My problem with Katharine is that she suffered from an eating disorder caused by poor body image and now she is projecting an image that is difficult for most girls to ever obtain. What kind of message is that? And yes, she’s being marketed to those girls.

What does that have to do with Ace?

  61. To be honest, thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s about the only reason the media is still interested in her.

I don’t think this is true at all. She is about to release her album in Europe and Australia, she’s singing at the White House and the Special Olympics, all things that she was asked to do, she has more radio concerts, she has a new video coming out and the Good Morning America concert series, anyway I could go on and on, but I won’t.

The media is not just interested in her glamorous photo shoots. IMO.

  62. Don’t turn this into a fan war. The answer to someone snarking on or criticizing your Idol is NOT pointing out other Idols.

    ETA: Nevermind, I have to re-think that…

  63. ABDUL ACTS LOOPY AT THE FIFI’S

At Thursday night’s Fragrance Foundation 2007 FiFi Awards, held at the Winter Garden, the upbeat “American Idol” judge was slotted to open the evening – but she arrived 30 minutes late, and a spy told Page Six she “was so completely out of it” when she finally showed.

“They had to delay the show for her to get there, and it was almost impossible to understand her . . . her eyes were half open,” the source said. “She had to have two guys help her to her seat after she left the stage.” ……

    http://www.nypost.com/seven/06022007/gossip/pagesix/pagesix.htm

  64. What does that have to do with Ace?

Nothing. Radname was just pointing out a double standard, when it comes to being provocative. I don’t think she meant any harm, and this is not a fan war at all. I just don’t think there is anything wrong with Kat’s pictures that’s all. Katharine had an eating disorder, she doesn’t anymore, I for one think that makes her a positive role model.

To each his/her own though, this is a battle that is useless for me to even fight. Considering everyone already has their minds made up about this whole thing.

    So I’m done.

    Peace Everyone.

  65. Donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t turn this into a fan war. The answer to someone snarking on or criticizing your Idol is NOT pointing out other Idols.

    ETA: Nevermind, I have to re-think thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

With my posts i’m not trying to turn it into a fan war, i’m trying to explain that Katharine is not the only person in the whole world, or to come from Idol that has dressed up sexy, or shown off her body. I don’t think what she is doing, or what Ace does is wrong at all.

My problem with Katharine is that she suffered from an eating disorder caused by poor body image and now she is projecting an image that is difficult for most girls to ever obtain.

Except she talks about her disorder and explains why she had it and what she did to get better. Having a better relationship with food, being happy with who she is etc.

  66. Well I am not a mother, so maybe thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s why I donà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t get what the problem is.
    […]
I do however strongly disagree that her pictures are trashy, she might look provocative in them, but she does not look trashy at all.

It’s not a matter of age. I’m not a mother either; I’m actually only a few months older than Kat, and I’m still of the opinion that she looks provocative and trashy in those pics. We’ll have to agree to disagree on this one. :)

Katharine is not the only one wearing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“suggestiveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ attire, or posing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“provactivelyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . Judging by some of the comments here youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d think ever other entertainer is Jesus and Katharine is poor poor Mary Magdalene.

That’s not really the point. I’m of the belief that just because the majority of people are doing something does not make that something right. It’s a fallacy to assume that.

Actually Ace has been very careful to be considered child friendly ever since he started his journey on AI.

I believe that pic is pre Idol.

I’m 99% sure that the picture is pre-AI. As Lisa succinctly noted, the issue at hand is behavior post-AI.

My problem with Katharine is that she suffered from an eating disorder caused by poor body image and now she is projecting an image that is difficult for most girls to ever obtain. What kind of message is that? And yes, sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s being marketed to those girls.

    I heart PJ.

ETA: Just to be clear, I’m not trying to rehash or perpetuate the discussion. I came back from brunch and missed all the action, which is why my response is a bit ill-timed now that things have died down. My apologies.

  67. Yes, since you can be “cured” from eating disorders, or any other disorder for that matter. 99% of the time eating disorders are caused by not thinking you are skinny enough or pretty enough or whatever, and you’re ALWAYS going to have that problem with self-image. You cannot be cured from that.

    ETA:

Adam Levine calls Blake a hustler.

Sounds like a ringing endorsement from Mr. Levine! LOL.

  68. Looks like we’re back at one, so I give you Anthony Callea, the runnerup from Australian Idol 2, who may be the winner in the glory note competition, starting at about the two minute mark:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ei2DfeqlfAg

And yes, before the speculation starts, Anthony is gay.

  69. I just have to say this about Ace. When we were at that ice cream party, he sang Father Figure but made a point of saying that he would change it up a little since there some “young fans” there. I can’t tell you how much I appreciated and admired him for that since I was there with my 9 and 6 year old who, incidentally, now adore Ace – just like their mom. He is tops in my book. I don’t care if his cd sounds like a cat in heat (not that I think it would) – I’m still buying it to support him. He’s a beautiful person – outside but, most importantly, inside too.

  70. Hi everyone!

I don’t see anything wrong per se with Kat’s latest pictues. But I do agree with those who note the discrepancy between her battle against bulimia and the fact that her marketing is at least 50% “look how hot she is!” And no, she may not be the only one sending a poor message to young girls, but the “everyone else is doing it” argument doesn’t make it right. And yes, Katharine may have fans of all ages, but I don’t think there’s really a question that her current image is marketed toward younger girls, the VERY youngest of whom may be getting the mistaken impression that you can become bulimic to lose weight and then stop, because hey, Katharine got “cured!” So much emphasis was put on her “…and now I’m totally healthy!” instead of the struggle that she very probably really went through, that it probably did come across as though she started puking to lose pounds, and stopped when she looked in the mirror and saw a bombshell. That’s not what really happened, of course, and I just hope that these girls have parents who are able to help them separate fantasy from reality. That doesn’t mean Kat should stop posing for sexy pictures, but it is something she should consider.

For me, the snarkworthy thing is that a year ago, she very emphatically stated that she’d NEVER do Maxim or FHM…unless her career was going downhill. Although I’m sure she meant that last part as a joke, it’s still amusing to me that in every picture I see of her, her hemline is just a little bit shorter, her legs are just a little more exposed, her breasts just a little more prominent, but it’s all being done in a “classy” way. To me, there’s absolutely no difference between the legs-in-the-air pose and a Maxim cover shoot, but hey, that’s me. She should do what she wants, but I hope she doesn’t start trying to draw false distinctions by playing the “classy” card.

  71. Speaking of Ace, he’s performing this weekend at the Brea Summerfest. Last night there was apparently some beatboxing during one of his songs. Not sure if it was him or someone else. LOL.

Anyway, Andreas Carlsson posted this comment to Ace’s myspace.

What’s up my friend!Love the songs, can’t get them out of my head..Sweden’s next!

I’m started to get exited about his album after all this waiting!

  72. I just read the Elliott article from Us. I loved the picture of him and Ace in the weinermobile! Embrace the cheese!!

  73. Please don’t post photos here unless you have permission from the owner. I just deleted a post because I got a complaint.

  74. Okay. This probably isn’t the right place but why didn’t TWOP give the Season 6 contestants the funny titles. You know like Chris- the song remains the same. :(

  76. Couldn’t watch the German death metal vids but not regretting that at all. The day I like that shi*t, I will certifiably crazy. However, some metal is actually good and I do think metal has become more mainstream. Maybe an idea for an AI theme. Hey, it does take a mighty powerful vocalist to deliver those songs. And nothing beats a power chord :smile1_tb:

I hope Paula Abdul nails the scoundrel who leaked the convo to the NYP. Is nothing sacred?

Happy for Lakisha, wished I lived nearer to Flint, the June 9th date should be a blast.

Ace :wub_tb: His hair looks shorter and it suits him very well. Johnny Depp, move over. (Thanks db/lisab)

Btw, for Depp fans, he’s on the current cover of the Rolling Stone with Keith Richards :) and looking mighty fine. Keith, bless his heart, but love the dude.

  77. ETA: Hope Ace realizes some decent sales. Anxious to hear his stuff. The way things have been going, he’ll prolly outsell Taylor :)

But, I heart Taylor Hicks. The first CD sucked large (IMO) but next time around, a different producer, some more “brass with ass” in the soul tunes, more rock & blues, maybe a ‘lil country thrown in…yeeeahhh. Hope Al “Boogie” Carty remains as the bassist.

  78. I got very excited when I read Andreas Carlsson’s comment, too, PJ. I can’t wait for the album.

Speaking of the Brea Summerfest, Ace even performed a minute of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick In the Wall. The man never ceases to amaze me. He can sing R&B and he can sing the classic rock songs very well.

  79. I can’t entirely blame Kat for wanting to play up her sultry side, but I think there is a difference between her pics and Ace’s pecs, I mean pic. Ace is great-looking, but I always say that his demeanor is anti-sex. Even when he poses shirtless, I don’t get the “hey baby” vibe from him so much as the “Hi! I’m Ace! In this picture I have no shirt on! Wanna get some ice cream later?” vibe.

  80. Even when he poses shirtless, I don’t get the “hey baby” vibe from him so much as the “Hi! I’m Ace! In this picture I have no shirt on! Wanna get some ice cream later?” vibe.
