The Idolator Interview: We Are The Fallen’s Carly Smithson

A one-time aspiring pop star, Carly Smithson has recast herself—and maybe found herself—as a bona fide rock goddess. The American Idol Season 7 alum, who vowed voters with her enthusiastic stage presence and gale-force vocal power, last year joined hard-rock band We Are The Fallen, a new outfit formed by several former members of Evanescence. But Carly warns against comparisons: “This band is completely different, ” the Irish lass tells us. “Evanescence is still together and currently making a new record. This band is a completely new thing.” After pursuing many different routes in the music scene, Carly seems most at home with the crunchy riffs and dark imagery of We Are The Fallen.

David Archuleta may be young, but his memoir still inspires.

There was a time when the writing of memoirs was solely the bailiwick of old people. In those days, the autobiographer had to wait at least until middle age before amassing enough experiences to fill an interesting tome.

Ah, but now we live in an accelerated era, an age when a callow youth can find himself rocketed to national celebrity through the auspices of a popular TV talent show—and then go on to write a pretty damned good book about it.

Archuleta’s memoir doesn’t bare ‘Soul’

David Archuleta is the most boring human being on the planet.

The “American Idol” season-seven finalist will test the patience of even his most devout fans with “Chords of Strength: A Memoir of Soul, Song, and the Power of Perseverance” (Celebra, $22.95).

There are no raw confessions in this 245-page memoir, nor any hint of personality.

The bashful Utah teen reflects on his calculated rise to fame with an “aw, shucks” simplicity.

Clay Aiken, ‘Tried and True’: A track-by-track review

Go to any estate sale with a stack of vinyl, and, invariably, you’ll find a selection of singers whose music seems left behind by time and popular opinion, acts like Perry Como, Jack Jones, Andy Williams. These were the pop singers whose careers were the last bastions of adult resistance against the onslaught of rock ‘n’ roll. During their day, they recorded prolifically and sold well, but — with the exception of Johnny Mathis, whose ethereal, vibrato-laden voice seemed to drift in from another, dreamier universe — any lasting impact on contemporary artists has proven to be the exception rather than the rule.

But some of her peers — dubbed “haters” by Finnie — saw an opportunity to cause pain. They began tormenting and bullying the girl, then 16.
