Judges to blame for Sanjaya
Wouldn’t happen on Canadian Idol: Flex

American Idol judges were asleep at the wheel when they chose the vocally challenged Sanjaya Malakar to be a finalist on the popular singing show, says Canadian Idol judge Farley Flex.

And, he boasts, there’s no chance he and fellow Canuck judges Sass Jordan, Zack Werner and Jake Gold could have a similar lapse in judgement.

“Sanjaya was put in there by the judges, it wasn’t the public that put him in there — the public kept him in there, but they didn’t put him in there, ” said Flex.

“I’m very confident in the integrity of our panel and our vision of what we see as being the Top 22 to turn over to the public, so I’m pretty confident in saying there wouldn’t be a Sanjaya scenario in our world.”……

  1. Thanks for the links Lisa! I don’t know where Canadian Idol gets off with saying what they did, i’ve watched Canadian Idol and they let a lot of very good people go in order to get “quirky” ones with non-mainstream voices, and that isn’t a bad thing. But when they’re letting good singers not advance to let lesser ones in because they have a different voice sucks.

  2. This media ad by the Illionois Genesee Theater was created for Taylor Hicks’ July 12 concert.

This is how to create a great concert advertisement :

To appreciate it, you have to click on the “Click Here to Listen to Taylor Hicks” link

Really great promo if I say so myself. Wish they had done that on American Idol or even on the radio.

  3. Lisa B… this is for you : :kiss_ee: and LBB this is for you :kiss_tb: and Abilymom.. I hear ya !! :bye_tb:.. you guys make my day. Poor Paula A. Didn’t Dudley Moore have that disease? Everyone thought he was always drunk… for the most part he was… but sometimes he wasn’t.

  4. This probably isn’t the right place for this but if you add the EPs, downloads, etc, can anyone explain how Jordin and Blake are doing compared to past seasons of idol. They had Blake on z100 this morning and he seems like a nice guy. He said he wanted the CD to be electronic music where the tracks blend into each other and then they played the Bon Jovi song.

I’m glad Jordin is enjoying her fame but she seems like a “low wattage” winner so far. They keep matching her up with Blake as if she couldn’t sustain the buzz as a solo. I can’t imagine her moving a million CDs by next fall/winter as her Season seems so forgettable.

    ((Abilymom))

  5. Co-winners started last year. This year it’s co-winners Jordin and Blake.

If Blake has 300 hats, why does he always wear that one?

  7. Interesting info from the Washington Post article above. It appears that even though CD sales have been declining, concert attendance has been increasing…

The good news? Industry trade magazine Pollstar reported 2006 ticket revenue at a record $3.6 billion, a 16 percent increase from 2005’s revenue, reversing a three-year drop. And Billboard Boxscore’s first-quarter 2007 reports show concert attendance up 19 percent and dollars up 28 percent. All of which suggests the concert industry may be emerging from its slump

  8. if you add the EPs, downloads, etc, can anyone explain how Jordin and Blake are doing compared to past seasons of idol.

We haven’t seen any official numbers for this week for the EPs, but based on where they fell on the comprehensive album chart, Jordin likely sold around 27K and Blake around 21K (using HDD numbers to guess…this is a terrible week for getting numbers).

If you combine that estimate with each of their lead singles (Jordin=TIMN=74K, Blake=YGLABN=70K), it puts Jordin at about 101K in sales and Blake at about 91K.

Even though those are just estimates, 10 K either way won’t change their position on the Idol Coronation Single First week chart (combining physical and digital sales):

    1. Clay : 393,000
    2. Ruben : 286,000
    3. Kelly : 236,000
    4. Taylor : 228,418
    5. Carrie : 170,528
    6. Fantasia 142,141
    7. Bo Bice : 121,423
    8. Jordin: 101K ( guess )
    9. Blake: 91K (guess)
    10. Katharine : 74,965
    11. Diana : 65,000

If we compare winners and co-winners to each other, Jordin is last and Blake is in the middle of his pack.

    Some factors to consider:
    Cons:
    1. Jordin and Blake had a shorter sales week than previous idols (iTunes made the songs available late Wednesday. iTunes also had problems the day Kat released and her digital week was a day shorter as well)
    2. Only digital sales
    3. Many of the songs were previously available for download from AI site.

    Pros:
    1. Jordin and Blake cashed in on the Idol finale euphoria instead of waiting 3-5 weeks later to release their single
    2. The EPs were the best bang for the buck (previous Idol singles were priced at $4.99 for two songs (even more in S3 for three songs)) at $3.99 for five songs.
    3. Didn’t have to compete with the Idol compilation CD which often featured at at least one of the same tracks.
    4. Some people like physical CDs (who are these dinosaurs?)

Multiple buyers have existed in ALL 6 years, so let’s not beat that dead horse.

I better associate this with a headline…er…sales…Walmart sells a lot of CDs…Walmart stocks have taken a beating…the shareholders meeting today are NOT happy…Jordin is singing there to cheer them up:

    http://money.cnn.com/2007/06/01/news/companies/walmart/?postversion=2007060111

“Indeed, this year Wal-Mart went all out on the entertainment factor, dedicating the first two hours of its four-hour meeting with investors to Sinbad’s comedy skits, a performance from the newest American Idol winner, Jordan Sparks, and actors from the Disney teen hit High School Musical before executives finally got down to business.”

Hmm, interesting little aside in this article:

“Bice, the ladies’ favorite, has not been so lucky. Although his CD, The Real Thing, sold well initially, he was recently dropped from his record label.”

Of course, given the media’s pitiful track record for accuracy while reporting on the Idols, who knows if this is true…

  22. Good! I’m glad Bo was dropped, even if he wasn’t. Onward and upward Bo!

dcd and mom — have a great time!

  23. Jordin and Blake cashed in on the Idol finale euphoria instead of waiting 3-5 weeks later to release their single

Once again, this goes to show that these young men and women are nothing but products to TPTB at AI. They wanted to continue to strike while the fire is hot. Why wait 3-5 weeks when they know this season was not the strongest and the momemtum might be lost by then. I am beginning to wonder what will happen to Jordin and Blake if their cds don’t sell will next fall. Will they go the way of Taylor and Kat?

It does appear as if all of the top three finishers are receiving their tv time this week. Which is a first. They usually give the first and second place finishers a change to soak up their time in the spotlight before they start giving tv face time to the third place finish. I’m I right in my observation?

I wonder if all three top finalist drop their cds around the sametime in the Fall?

  24. The problem with making the Idol music only available via download is that there are still people who prefer to buy CDs rather than downloading them. That cuts out a large segment of Idol viewers who might buy the CDs but don’t download music for whatever reason. It seems counter-productive to me, but I agree, it’s a real “strike while the iron is hot” mentality.

It’s particularly telling when both Taylor and Katharine’s physical CD singles are still charting on the BB single sales chart a year later. Will people still be downloading Jordin and Blake next year at this time? I rather doubt it, but we’ll see.

  25. From Chris Sligh written experience at the Well Done Awards, May 30

“Bebe Winans and Katherine McPhee performed. Holy crap, they were great. I’d never heard Katharine sing live, and honestly it was one of the best live voices I’ve heard in a long time. I give that girl credit…she deserved to win 2nd place last year. And she is honestly one of the nicest people you’ll meet. Very down to earth and open about things she’s going through”

Gotta love that!!!! Well I do anyway. : )

  26. So jpfan, you would’ve guessed that Carrie would sell 6 million based on the sales of her coronation single? I think I’ll wait to hear what Jordin’s and Blake’s albums sound like before I try to guess how successful they’ll be.

It sounds like there might still be a chance for Jordin and Blake to have physical singles out…this from Billboard:

    Hi Fred,

I feel cheated and I would guess that both Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis feel cheated, too. After five seasons of carrying over the “American Idol” finale feeling of energy into the record store to buy the physical singles of the top finalists, we were deprived of it this year. I have no single to add to my collection and wonderful sweet Jordin has to have the distinction of being the “Idol” winner who broke the streak of No. 1 singles. I completely understand that the times they are a changin’ and no one buys physical singles any more, but the huge demographic of “American Idol” fans still does. We are music fans, collectors and chart watchers and this choice is very disappointing. I am certain that I am not your only reader who is writing to you about this and I am very interested in hearing your thoughts. Do you think there is any chance that the record company, or whoever makes the decision, will decide to release some physical singles after all?

    Ric Martel
    Chicago, Ill.

    Dear Ric,

I don’t think we’ve seen the end of the story yet. While the digital downloads were available immediately after the show, neither Jordin Sparks nor Blake Lewis have their label deals finalized yet, though both will be signed and both will be in the Sony BMG family. I expect announcements any moment, as I know which labels are their intended homes, and the news could be posted even before Chart Beat Chat goes online.

While I don’t know for certain, I would expect their respective labels to release physical singles, especially given the track record of previous “Idol” winners and runners-up. So Jordin’s “This Is My Now” and Blake’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” could still sell in the hundreds of thousands, and could still compete for No. 1 on the Hot 100.

Note that he also says he knows which Sony/BMG labels Jordin & Blake will go to. I guess it’s just a matter of time before we get official announcements.

  27. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s particularly telling when both Taylor and Katharineà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s physical CD singles are still charting on the BB single sales chart a year later. Will people still be downloading Jordin and Blake next year at this time? I rather doubt it, but weà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll see.

looks like AI don t give a carp about jordin and blake…
