‘Idolatry’: Breaking down the Crystal-Lee finale (and bidding adieu to Casey) on ‘American Idol’

It’s been a long, strange ninth season of American Idol, but with only two episodes remaining, it’s come down to the two most consistent, innovative finalists in the competition. Will it be Lee DeWyze, the humble everyman who’s suddenly become the “chosen one” for Simon, Kara, and the two other people on the judges’ panel? Or will it be early front-runner Crystal Bowersox, the hippie chick who scored the unprecedented accomplishment of getting one of her self-penned ditties played for an audience of 20 million people? Perhaps more importantly, does it really matter which of these artists ends up taking a confetti shower at L.A.’s Nokia Theatre on Wednesday night?

‘American Idol’s’ Christian connection

She isn’t employed by the show and viewers never see her sparring with Simon Cowell. But Leesa Bellesi exerts her own kind of pull on “American Idol, ” Fox’s top-rated singing contest that has a unique if often-unstated link to Christian churches.

Bellesi, who runs a Christian nonprofit in Lake Forest with her ex-pastor husband, visits tapings frequently, has befriended numerous finalists and helps wrangle funds and scout temporary housing for families who trek cross-country to see relatives perform on “Idol.” Bellesi said that churches form a base for the young singers as they try to win votes and establish fan bases. Half of the Top 10 last season were worship leaders in their churches, she said.

Cheers and Tears for American Idol Finalists Crystal and Lee: Singers With Heart

It’s easy to make fun of American Idol. There are the judges, filthy rich and full of themselves, so bored that they’re passing notes and giggling, especially Sir Simon Cowell, who seems to have already checked out of the show mentally, even if his tightly-t-shirted body is still affixed to its chair. There’s groovy Ryan Seacrest, the consummate TV host, smoothly chatting up contestants and building mass tension by moving Idols around like pawns on a chessboard. There are the tiresomely cheerful Ford commercials and tall red Coke cups. As Ke$ha would say, “Blah, blah, blah.”

Gabbing with Gokey: ‘American Idol’ finalist talks about country music and life after the show

Danny Gokey hasn’t watched much of “American Idol” this year.

He has a good excuse: Since April, Gokey’s been on the road, supporting his debut disc, “My Best Days, ” as opening act for country music duo Sugarland.

Still, Gokey figures he knows enough about “American Idol” to act as host for a season finale party at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Allentown’s PigPen Sports Bar, held by radio stations WLEV-FM 100.7 and WCTO-FM Cat Country 96.1.

‘American Idol’ contender Daughtry is on top

The biggest-selling rock act in recent memory isn’t Nickelback, Kings of Leon or Green Day.

Daughtry, fronted by “American Idol” Season 5 competitor Chris Daughtry, holds that distinction thanks to its self-titled 2006 CD, which includes the hits “It’s Not Over” and “Home.” It was the top rock release two years in a row and the fastest-selling rock debut since Soundscan began tracking sales.

“That was never a thought in my mind, ” Daughtry says of his album’s success. “I just wanted to put out the best thing I could.”

Bret Michaels, Kevin Jonas, Katharine McPhee Open Up On ‘When I Was 17’

The things a high school kid will do to stay cool. Just ask “American Idol” runner-up Katharine McPhee, who admitted that she used to be “known as the serial dater.”

“My boyfriend at the time, Kevin, we planned this sleepover at this other friend’s house whose parents were out of town, ” she explained. “I told my dad, ‘I’m going to sleep at Michelle’s house.’ There were a bunch of girls there and guys there. It was really fun. We all went to sleep, and it was, like, 3 in the morning. The house phone kept ringing, and I was like, ‘Kevin!’ I woke him up, I was like, ‘Something’s wrong. The phone keeps ringing.’ He finally picks up the phone, and it’s my dad. I just heard this deep, serious voice on the other line. I’m like, ‘Holy sh–.’ I thought in that moment I was going to die.”

McPhee added: “I was grounded for two weeks.”

Season 10 of ‘Dancing With the Stars’ spins to a close

Oh, that tango. Did you see it? Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough made that 90-second dance a thing of dark beauty. Slowly they rose, from bended knees, legs coiling and flicking as if kicking away some very precise fly. Eyes smoldering, shoulders set, they wove a tapestry of movement; at one point, she stood on his foot as he raised it, so delicately you didn’t even have time to think about how impossible such a move would be. It was, like the tango of Gilles Marini and Cheryl Burke a couple of seasons back, utterly mesmerizing.

And then there was the sparkly turquoise jumpsuit worn by Erin Andrews for her Viennese waltz, which was just as mesmerizing — in a different way.

Could ‘Dancing with the Stars’ beat ‘American Idol’ finale ratings for first time?

Ratings rivals “American Idol” and “Dancing With the Stars” both take a bow this week with their season finales. Could the “Dancing” season ender actually topple the Fox giant for the first time ever?

Yes, and here’s why in two words: Kate Gosselin.

The Octomom drama queen had quite a run on the parquet, lasting for weeks before finally being eliminated April 20. But when the former star of “Jon and Kate Plus Eight” was vanquished by voters, ABC execs started sweating as ratings took a free fall of 17 percent.
