‘American Idol’ Prediction Results: We Didn’t See it Coming Either, James Durbin

Sometimes we “Idol” prognosticators get it totally right and then there’s this week.

All around, we couldn’t have been more wrong about what was going to happen on Thursday night’s “American Idol” elimination show. After all the Haley Reinhart talk and the certainty that the blues grunter would be sent back to Chicago (where there are, it should be noted, tons of perfectly decent cheesy blues bars eagerly awaiting her return), James’ booting was a bolt of heavy metal thunder that came totally out of the blue.

James Durbin Gets Some Advice From Daughtry Producer

“I think it’s a tricky moment for James where he might not want to hear what people have to say to him, but I’d be very clear and tell him there are two kinds of success: personal and commercial, ” said rock producer Howard Benson, who helped shape the smash debut from fourth-place finisher Chris Daughtry and who has worked on albums by everyone from My Chemical Romance to Theory of a Deadman.

“If you want to be commercially successful and you’re going in this [old-school metal] direction, that’s a huge gamble, ” Benson said. “It’s OK to make that gamble because it’s your career. But if it doesn’t work, you have to be prepared for that.”

“Durbin could make something really interesting. He could bring metal back to the mainstream if he was coached right on the production. But you can’t go back to the past and try to remake things that have already been done.”

Paula Abdul Signs With CAA

EXCLUSIVE: On the heels of getting a new job as a judge on Fox’s X Factor, Paula Abdul is also getting a new agency representation. Abdul has just signed with CAA. For the past almost 2 years, since her abrupt departure from American Idol in the summer of 2009, Abdul had been at UTA. But she has recently been at odds with the agency over commissions on her blockbuster deal for X Factor, which UTA has argued that it is entitled to and the singer has claimed she shouldn’t pay as she got the job because of her pre-existing relationship with Simon Cowell. Abdul had threatened to leave if the agency didn’t agree not to commission her for X Factor. That has now become a reality. At CAA, she joins her pal Cowell who is also repped there. In addition to her stint on American idol, Abdul also had her own show, Live to Dance, on CBS.
