‘American Idol’ Executive Producer Says Pia Toscano Voted Off ‘Too Early’

Pia Toscano’s departure from “American Idol” this season came as a surprise to the show’s producers, not just the audience. In an interview with Speakeasy, Idol Executive Producer Ken Warwick said America created an upset. “She went too early. No question.”

At the end of the season, producers will go back and review the analytics to see if there is any indication that the voting system played a part in Pia’s premature departure. He said, “We analyze – is it because we added online? Was it the phone votes?”

Warwick said they look at the demographics of voters, who tend to be mothers and girls. That make-up tends to make it more difficult for girls to get ahead in the contest. They look at the entire season of voting to see if there’s anything that can be done to even the playing field.

Clay Aiken offers insight on Garner ‘Idol’ hopeful

He doesn’t watch the show regularly, but has taken the time to tune in for Garner’s McCreery.

“He’s very different than me, isn’t he?” Aiken joked. “If he makes it to finale, even if I don’t watch, I’ll call in.”

After all, the Triangle has a real knack for supporting its hometown stars, Aiken said.

“The Triangle is without question better at rallying behind our own, ” he said. “I strongly believe a large part of why I made it as far as I did was because of this area.”

Over three EPs released in succession this year, the singer will deliver an array of new tunes, recorded by the likes of Calvin Matthews and Sak Pase (Rihanna). This way, he reasons, his music is as fresh as its gets — as in, still warm from the recording studio to your hard drive.

A North Carolina native, Desai lived in Los Angeles for a stint post-Idol, but ultimately decided to return east, settling in Atlanta. “L.A. was so big and a little cliquey, ” he says. “I just wasn’t feeling it and I missed home.”
