Nobody’s betting on ‘Idol’

“American Idol” isn’t hurting just in the ratings these days. Now, no one wants to bet on it, either.

Gambling911.com — a Web site that tracks online sports betting odds but also reports on reality-show odds as a sidelight — says that bettor interest in “Idol” has fallen sharply.

“March, April, May were traditionally among our most trafficked periods with ‘American Idol’ airing, ” Payton O’Brien, a senior editor at Gambling911.com said on the site.

No more, he says.

“Betting interest in the show started to dwindle two years ago, ” O’Brien says.

So now, because of the lack of interest, says the site, it’s going to stop carrying “Idol” odds.

The site says it has seen “some interest” from bettors looking for odds on “Dancing With the Stars” contestants and will continue to carry odds for the rival series.

‘Idolatry’: Siobhan Magnus talks rainbows, ponies, evil clowns, and her ‘American Idol’ run

Left to her own devices, Siobhan Magnus says her American Idol tenure might’ve looked very different from what you saw on TV — and probably ended a heckuva lot earlier. The Glassblower sat down with me at Amalia Restaurant in New York City earlier this week to talk about which contro-versee-ahhl songs she almost chose in the semifinals (instead of “Wicked Game” and “Think”), how her rendition of “Paint It Black” was influenced by scary clowns, and why she hopes someday to make an album that’s “little-girl friendly.”

5 Reasons Lee DeWyze Could Win ‘American Idol’

All season long, dreadlocked mama Crystal Bowersox has been the talk of ‘American Idol’ season 9, consistently giving flawless performances miles above the competition. Until recently, shy, raw-voiced Lee DeWyze lingered in her shadow like the rest.

But DeWyze has also been slowly and steadily pulling up alongside Bowersox with a string of standout performances — just in time for the ‘Idol’ finale on May 25.

Student concert celebrates the power of music in IPS

The district has partnered with VH1 Save the Music Foundation to put musical instruments and classes in every school in the district, a goal achieved this year.

Before that, many schools had lost their music programs to budget cuts.

Students performed en masse Thursday night, alternating between string sections and band sections, playing popular songs and children’s favorites. They were joined in the middle of the concert by a special guest, Kris Allen, last year’s “American Idol” winner.

Sugarland brings triple-bill of country-pop to E Center

Gokey, 30, finished third on “Idol” last year behind Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, who both released successful albums after the “American Idols LIVE” tour wrapped in 2009. Gokey signed with the same company as Lambert and Allen, 19 Recordings, but went in a direction that seemed contrary to the R&B and contemporary Christian influences he exhibited on the show.

Gokey said an “Idol” guest mentor, Randy Travis, was the first person who told him he could be an effective country singer. “It got my wheels turning, ” Gokey said. “I never thought country would accept me because I was a soulful singer. He said country needed soul.”

Mike Miller, concert organizer, said the turnout beat expectations.

“It took a little bit of doing to get him here, ” Miller said.

Celebrity watch: Simon Cowell as Tory Glory Boy

To many, it seemed the election was done and dusted this week when, on Tuesday, the single most important vote in Britain was cast: that of Simon Cowell.

“I have never liked celebrities lecturing on politics, ” Cowell wrote in The Sun — before going on to blithely lecture everyone to vote Tory, because “I believe David Cameron is the Prime Minister we need at this difficult time”.

Of course, who “we” are is a moot point — Cowell lives in Beverly Hills, and most assuredly won’t be bothered by who’s emptying the bins in Barnsley come Christmas — but his take on the whole thing was instructive and curious.

You had a chance to meet your idols, Rascal Flatts. How did you keep from being star struck?
Yes, that was incredible! In the beginning I was star struck by everybody I met. And then you get to where you learn that they are just people and they like to be treated as people more than they like to be treated as stars, and so I felt the more I went through, that’s how it became. When I met Rascal Flatts, I was still pretty excited! But I tried to keep my cool and everything. I got to take a picture with them all and getting to talk to them, they are really nice guys.

Anoop Desai looks to Drake, Elliott Yamin as models on his indie debut, sets sights on international market

Season 8’s sixth-place finisher, Anoop Desai, released his debut album, “All is Fair, ” earlier this week, selling it exclusively through iTunes and his own website. But in a crowded market of ex-Idols — last season’s top 4 are all out promoting their first albums, along with the likes of season 7’s Jason Castro, whose first full-length album came out on April 13 — how does an “Idol” fan favorite better his chances at success?

Anoop’s approach is pretty straightforward: start local, think global. “One of the things that really shaped ‘Idol’ for me was visiting Motown, ” he said. “It wasn’t Capitol Records, it wasn’t anything — Motown was a house in Detroit, the music drew from the neighborhoods of poor black Detroit, and ended up changing everything. To me, that meant it was important for people around you to believe in you.”
