The ‘American Idol, ‘ ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Détente: What Gives?

So how did this détente come to be? You could say it started with Idol host Ryan Seacrest. In summer 2010, he copped to having a cozy relationship with ex-DWTS pro Julianne Hough, whom he, somewhat creepily, met when she was 18 and just starting on the show next door. Ballas took it to the next level, by first dating Idol Top 24 contestant Joanna Pacitti, who was disqualified from the competition in season 8 when it was revealed that she was friendly with several 19 Entertainment staffers, and now Toscano, who many thought was favored to win Season 10.

Things get even kookier behind the scenes, where the two shows have ostensibly swapped music bookers. Steven Schillaci, who booked the musical acts for Idol through season 9, is now handling those duties at Dancing (you can thank — or blame — him for guilty pleasure night) and Suzanne Bender, who booked the last few seasons of DWTS, has moved over to Idol. Put things is swingers terms, and it’s turned into one heck of a key party.

Idoloonies: Praise for James, a Split Vote for Casey, and Advice for Scotty and Haley

With only five weeks remaining in American Idol‘s tenth season, hard questions still outnumber firm answers: Are the show’s producers putting their weight behind James Durbin? What could possibly stop season-long front-runners Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina from advancing to the final three? Is Casey Abrams a versatile and risk-taking performer, or a growling ham who doesn’t know enough to stick to what he does best? What can Haley Reinhart do to avoid her weekly flirtation with elimination? What is the deal with Jacob Lusk’s on-the-brink-of-crying performance style? And am I really wearing a #SignPiaToscano t-shirt? (Yes.)

Who Should Watch The Voice and Who Shouldn’t

We’re still more than a month away from crowning the next American Idol, but NBC is undeterred: The House of Peacock has decided what this country needs right now is … another musical competition designed to find/manufacture a pop superstar. It’s called The Voice, and it’s technically based on a Dutch format which debuted last year; in truth, it’s just a slightly tweaked version of The X Factor, a much older international TV format that’s headed to Fox this fall. When NBC first announced it was mounting The Voice in December, we pretty much wrote it off in our minds, thinking there was no way American viewers would want to deal with an Idol-like series during the height of Idol season. But then the network went and hired a pretty impressive roster of celebrities to serve as judges/coaches:

Max Adler: ‘Glee’ has the ability to change how people think

PW: Ok, so it sounds like we’re not going to see a big resolution in tonight’s episode, but what can you say about “Born This Way?”
Max: Tonight forces Karofsky to take a look at himself in a way that he hasn’t before. He also forms an unlikely alliance with someone in the school, that will come out of nowhere and wouldn’t make sense if I told you right now, but when you see it, you’ll get it. And he comes face to face with Kurt, again.
