Audience Up, ‘Idol’ Defies TV Gravity

But “Idol” defied television gravity. After steadily losing audience share for the last several years, it has reversed the trend this season, gaining total viewers for the first time since 2007.

Admittedly the gains are slight; “Idol” is averaging 25 million viewers this season, up 1 percent over the same time last season. But by the standards of TV math, which anticipates declines every year until a show dies, the uptick is striking. And it gives Fox’s parent, the News Corporation, reason to believe that the franchise will continue to generate hundreds of millions of dollars for many more years.

What’s more striking is the lead “Idol” has over its competitors. It has a 79 percent higher rating among 18-to- 49-year-olds than the next biggest show, “Modern Family.” That kind of gap has never been seen before in that demographic in television history, Fox says, citing Nielsen data.

Paul McDonald Would “Love” to Be on ‘Breaking Dawn’ Soundtrack; Working With Peter Facinelli

Paul McDonald stopped by the OK! NYC offices this week to talk about his American Idol experience and where his career is headed. We had to ask about Nikki Reed, and the Nashville stud didn’t have enough good things to say about his new leading lady. He also admitted he has never read Twilight or seen the movies (blasphemous, we know), but that’s all about to change.

How American Idol Helped Erase Jacob Lusk’s Rap Sheet

According to a court spokeswoman, he was immediately sentenced, receiving three days of credit for jail (so he never actually did time). He also was ordered to fork over $100 restitution and was put on probation for two years.

Now here’s where A.I. comes in…

The aspiring singer did his time and paid his fine, but he ended up going back to the judge begging to have his probation rescinded. His reason? Idol producers would never let Lusk compete on the show if he was still on probation. Lucky for him, the judge was sympathetic and ended his probation.

Interview with Jeff Fenster, Executive Vice President of A&R at Warner Bros. Records

DK: Was it then that you returned to Jive Records?

Fenster: I worked at J Records for a year, and then returned to Jive in 2005, where I worked until the end of 2010. This time around, I worked with several of the American Idol winners and finalists, such as Jordin Sparks, Kris Allen, David Archuleta and Crystal Bowersox, A&R-ing their albums. I also signed a great rock band called Cage the Elephant.

DK: I love the hit song “Live Like We’re Dying” for Kris Allen. Did you find this song?

Fenster: Yes. My buddy [A&R exec] Keith Naftaly had given me a song [called “Written All Over My Face”] that was written by Andrew Frampton, Steve Kipner and the band The Script [Danny O’Donoghue & Mark Sheehan] which they hadn’t used for The Script’s albums. I asked if the Script had any other songs that they hadn’t used. They told me about this song called “Live Like We’re Dying” [by the same four writers] which was only released as a bonus digital track in Germany. I loved this song, Kris recorded it, and it became a hit.

It was also season low in total viewers, a its lowest 18-34 numbers since December 2009. Raising Hope returned down 4% from its last original on March 15 to a 2.2 adults 18-49 rating.
