Idol Meter: Lee DeWyze, Aaron Kelly and Andrew Garcia

Last week’s Idol soul survivors put on a pretty good show, all told, particularly Crystal Bowersox and co-leaders Lee DeWyze and a daring Michael Lynche. Tonight it’s the Lennon-McCartney songbook, and since several Idols scored big in Season 7 with The Beatles, the odds are good that this crew can avoid a hard day’s night.

‘Idol’ rehearsals: a view from the inside

Well, weren’t we just tickled pink to be invited into the secret lair that is Monday’s “American Idol” rehearsal. That’s right, just the Top 9, executive producer Ken Warwick, stage manager Debbie Williams, Rickey Minor and the “Idol” band, about a dozen support staffers and yours truly, trying not to ogle too conspicuously at the sweet country sexiness that is Casey James. And all this on Lennon-McCartney week, no less!
Needless to say, the offer left us speechless — both figuratively and literally, the latter referring to song choices, which we promised we wouldn’t spoil (but take our word for it, you will not be disappointed!). It wasn’t our first time observing the Monday run-through, but it certainly had been a while, and there was lots we didn’t know or remember about the process. So rather than recap and leave a bunch of holes, we thought we’d detail what we learned from observing Season 9’s Top 9, starting with …

Billy Bileca, The Man Who Coaxed Katie Stevens Onstage Before ‘Idol’

Bileca, a veteran performer who also teaches music, worked with the Middlebury teenager for months after she auditioned, knowing she would need more performance experience and a more diverse repertoire if she was going to hold her own. The married father of one is in close touch with Stevens as she continues her climb on the show. Over lunch, he recently talked about Stevens, her talents and his love of music while “spilling the beans” with Java.

Cape Cod rallies around Siobhan Magnus

(NECN: Josh Brogadir, Marstons Mills, Mass.) – Cape Cod is rallying around Siobhan Magnus. The 20-year-old Massachusetts native is in the final nine on “American Idol”.

Signs of support can be seen all across Cape Cod.

They call her the Cape Idol, and hitting those high notes, it’s not hard to see why 20 year old Siobhan Magnus is one of nine finalists, vying to become the next American Idol, on the wildly popular Fox TV show.

‘Idol’ castoff has critiques for show’s judges

Last week, they panned Benami’s performance of “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, ” calling it “old fashioned, ” “overdone” and “dramatic.”

Benami, a Tennessee native who moved to Los Angeles to pursue singing in 2005, also thinks the judges could tone down their reactions

“I would tell them to not be as harsh because some of the things they said were really, really hurtful and not necessary.”

Eliminated Idol Didi Benami: I Didn’t Want a Sympathy Vote

American Idol’s latest casualty, Didi Benami, knows the moment with Ryan Seacrest after the judges’ criticisms was awkward.

Benami, who chose to sing “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted” in honor of her deceased friend, clammed up Tuesday night when Seacrest prompted her to share that tidbit with the fans.

“I didn’t want to try to get a sympathy vote, ” Benami tells TVGuide.com “I didn’t really feel like bringing it up. If you did a little research, you would know that I was there in honor of my friend, and I felt like that song was supposed to be an inspiration really.

Kris Allen Emotional For The People Of Haiti

American Idol Season Eight winner Kris Allen is not only a great performer, but also a kind and compassionate individual. Kris Allen won’t be singing at Heifer event Wednesday

If you’re going to the “Barefoot Bash” benefit Wednesday at Heifer International, you’ll get to hear American Idol and Arkansas’ own Kris Allen talk about his recent trip to Rwanda. But don’t expect to hear him sing here or in central Arkansas before the Saline Summer Daze Festival.

Those with Heifer say they never planned for Kris to sing at the Wednesday event. It’s all about charitable work. But you can hear him sing at Saline Summer Daze. He will be the headliner for the event. A contract with organizers stipulates when and where he can perform in the next 60 days.

Adam Lambert’s Thoughts on Ricky Martin Coming Out

Adam Lambert is privately asking friends, “What took Ricky so long to admit he is gay?”

Apparently, Adam couldn’t imagine “bearing your soul on stage when everything you were singing was a lie, ” a music insider tells me. “It’s not just Ricky Martin that bugs him, but all the other gay artists who sing about love and romance with girls and then go and kiss other men.”

Adam was the only artist that told the truth about his sexuality at the peak of his success. Elton John, Lance Bass and now Ricky all came out after they had made millions. Oh well, better late than never.

Matt Giraud – Life After American Idol

American Idol Season Eight had the makings of being the best year in the history of the the show, especially when you consider that Matt Giraud only placed fifth in the popular US singing competition. Many fans feel that if the Michigan pianist was in the latest season, he would undoubtedly be a finalist or maybe even the winner. Giraud added some evidence to that point with his killer performance of Billy Joel’s Tell Her About It with fellow season eight top-ten singer Scott MacIntyre on March 11. Giraud and MacIntyre outclassed the season eight contestants and left them looming in their dust.

“Dancing with the Stars” recap: Pam gets smart

On my favorite dance show, “So You Think You Can Dance, ” they call the quickstep the “Kiss of Death” because it is intricate, quick and not necessarily as big a crowd pleaser as the more dramatic or romantic dances – so any couple who gets burdened with it usually ends up going home the next week. But it’s storytelling night, and if 78 percent of Americans believe that whole “Christ rising from the dead” business, then it’s certainly possible to get us to believe in a dance even when the steps are not accurate. Good thing, too.

  1. What I don’t understand about that e-mail is it’s addressed to someone at sonymusic.com, and sent by someone at sonymusic.com. I suppose it could have been an internal e-mail that got cc’d to this guy in Iowa, but it seems odd.

  2. nutting2lose @iowaradioguy This is an internal mail from sony to sony. HTH did u get it.? and Adam’s label is RCA not Arista. we’ll know soon enough. 10 minutes ago via web in reply to iowaradioguy

iowaradioguy @nutting2lose the email was sent to a distribution list. The sony music owns RCA, Arista, among others. Sheesh! 5 minutes ago via TweetDeck in reply to nutting2lose

  3. There is a whole discussion about Adam’s mentoring on another blog.
It looks like a hoax to me. With all my respect and admiration for Adam, I don’t think that he is qualified to be a mentor at the current stage of his career.
    But the ratings will skyrocket..IMHO.

  4. Will, RCA, Arista and Jive are all Sony labels. I think I think those two broken images next to Arista logo could be RCA’s and Jive’s logos.

  5. I wasn’t questioning the Arista logo, I just posted those tweets because he answered my question about the address.

This all appears to be legit I guess, though if this e-mail was mass-distributed, why is he the only one talking about it?

  6. This all appears to be legit I guess, though if this e-mail was mass-distributed, why is he the only one talking about it?

Perhaps the other radio peeps who received it have already experienced the wrath of the Idol fandom, and they weren’t stupid enough to say anything?

  7. That “from Sony, to Sony” is common when using distribution lists, or blind-copying.

  8. An emotional Allen took to the phones for an in-depth conference call with the media when he returned from the earthquake shocked country. RockStar Weekly joined in the call, as he expressed his feelings and thoughts for the people of Haiti.

Why is the write-up getting posted just now? Wasn’t this from like 2 months ago?

  9. , While Siobhan Magnus, fully recovered from last week’s stumble and firmly in control of her instrument, delivered the sort of vocal finesse and sophistication we’d expect from Adam Lambert

. Yay for Siobhan recovering and I hope she can deliver on stage tonite. I hope all the kids do better. Dont they all look good in the photo, I guess they are all growing on me.

  10. ‘Idol’ rehearsals: a view from the inside

LATimes is doing quite well with the Idol exclusives this year. It’s nice to get a glimpse into Idol’s secret rehearsals, and Shirley seems pretty positive about this week’s performances… Have they ever let media to backstage glimpses this early in the season before? I vaguely remember EW had a backstage visit much later in season 7, maybe somewhere around top 5?

I feel this season is so buzz-free, they’re hoping to get people interested by giving these peeks behind the curtains.

  11. “Adam was privately asking friends…” and “Apparently…”, and this supposedly made it to press? I don’t know anything about Popeater, but sounds like how National Enquirer works: “…a source said…”

Adam was asked about Ricky Martin during his international promo tour, and he was very complimentary about Ricky. Nothing like this Popeater garbage.

  12. LATimes is doing quite well with the Idol exclusives this year. It’s nice to get a glimpse into Idol’s secret rehearsals, and Shirley seems pretty positive about this week’s performances…

Shirley is very, um, chummy with TPTB, since she’s writing articles for the AI magazine, which is a conflict of interest in my book, but hey, if it gets her exclusive access to rehearsals, good for her. She did make a boo-boo though:

It’s the fourth time in three years that “Idol” has featured the seminal work of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Tune in on Tuesday for the two-hour showdown and to see whether Season 9 will do the Beatles catalog justice.

It’s the third time. Three is bad enough.

  13. Adam was asked about Ricky Martin during his international promo tour, and he was very complimentary about Ricky. Nothing like this Popeater garbage.

Nothing about that article sounds authentic. I have no idea how Adam feels about the situation (plus, I don’t care – because not every gay man has to have an opinion about the life of every other gay man). But, that whole “a friend says” crap is usually just made up gossip, much like the Enquirer.

  24. girlgirl in one interview he said he didn’t know what the single was going to be yet. The DJ wants it to be WAOMF. They ask if he could at least narrow it down to two but of course Kris wouldn’t. Then he did a different interview and he said they were still working out the kinks.(whatever that means).

  25. Star 94.1 in San Diego said this morning that Kris was going to be in their studios to sing and give an interview, but they didn’t say when. Just that it’s coming up soon.

Maybe he’ll be there singing his new single…one can hope :)

  26. Anyone else take a look at the picture of Bruno. HELLO! For being 54, he looks great!

  27. Apparently, there is an “investigation” going on to see who “hacked” Ricky Martin’s twitter account and blog, lol. I’m not sure what’s true. I read about all of this on another message board – a pretty irreverent one – so take it all with a grain of salt!

  28. girlygirl, I didn’t hear the interview first hand– someone at IDF did. He said that there were a few kinks that needed to be worked out before the single could be released. So no mention of the actual date. The person who heard the interview also mentioned that he said that they have chosen the second single but it could still change… not really sure what that’s about. I wonder if TT is being prepped for single #3 since they are reworking it.

  29. Apparently, there is an “investigation” going on to see who “hacked” Ricky Martin’s twitter account and blog, lol. I’m not sure what’s true. I read about all of this on another message board – a pretty irreverent one – so take it all with a grain of salt!

LOL – that’s pretty hilarious. I think I shall start an investigation of my own :).

  30. I just started following entertainment media in the last year because of my interest in Kris. To my chagrin, I’ve discovered that some “articles” are written by people who have no interest in informing the public or contributing positively to an entertainer’s career but who instead appear to be jealous of his/her success and write in order to harm or cause controversy. The article about Adam’s comments on Ricky’s coming out is a perfect example of carefully worded conjecture and inuendo. Makes me sad when people use the written word to harm instead of build up. I don’t believe in karma but I do believe in “treating others like you’d like to be treated.” I guess some would call me naive, but I have a message for “writers” who get their kicks by causing controversy – LLWD people – or when you call for absolution, there’ll be no one on the line!

  31. I don’t know if this means anything but there is an article in americanidol.com about Kris it mentions his recent BB#1’s but it also states;

“Kris has tour stops around the world scheduled from now through September.”

Could this be why there are gaps in his schedule for June/July for some international touring? It may be nothing but interesting.

  32. I read about all of this on another message board

Strange that we never hear anything about this recantation in any proper news channel. Are we to take any posting on silly forums as news nowadays?

  33. Casey is still catching up on his “Idol” history. The Texas native made it to the Top 10 without having watched a single episode of “American Idol,” but now that he’s in contention for the crown, Casey is trying to familiarize himself with Idols of years past. Monday’s history lesson included an introduction to Brooke White and Michael Johns via YouTube, both of which blew him away. “What I love about music is you can hear when it’s real,” he blurted, to which this reporter couldn’t help but think, truer words have never been spoken.

The timing of this makes me think Casey is singing one of the songs MJ or Brooke performed during one of the Beatles night. It’s probably between Let It Be and Across the Universe.

  34. Strange that we never hear anything about this recantation in any proper news channel. Are we to take any posting on silly forums as news nowadays?

You only quoted part of my statement. I said that I read in on an irreverent message board so take it with a grain of salt. I wasn’t reporting it as a fact, only as an interesting aside.

  35. You only quoted part of my statement.

I don’t see anything apart from straight statements of fact in the following quotes –

OL at Popeater asking Adam about Ricky Martin coming out. I guess that was before he recanted.

Oh, to be clear, Ricky is the one who recanted. He said he’s a heterosexual male.

Your only qualification on your statements was “apparently” there is an investigation into possible hackings on his account and website. That would be what “take it with a grain of salt” would refer to, because none of the other statements has any qualification. You reported something that appeared to be false as fact.

  36. Apparently, there is an “investigation” going on to see who “hacked” Ricky Martin’s twitter account and blog, lol. I’m not sure what’s true. I read about all of this on another message board – a pretty irreverent one – so take it all with a grain of salt!

The above is my exact quote. You are correct that I wasn’t clear on that in the first two statements. I’m sorry if that offended you. Peace.

  39. TwigLA: Those were awesome video’s. He looked like he was having alot of fun. I really like IIO with the saxs.

  40. OK: in a moment of complete fantardiness – escaping from mentorgate, which seems to have ambushed AI online world completely – I looked up the Get Steady song from one of DC’s latest tweets.

I could only find a song by Jonny Lives – is that the one?

In which case – interesting lyric choice! Hah!

  41. Good news:
RT @blakerutherford: Thanks to everyone who purchased a ticket to #barefootbash @Heifer w/ @KrisAllen . The event is now SOLD OUT.

  42. jmom376, I agree with you. The sax is fitting so nicely with IIO! they should have put a sax track on the recording

  43. TwigLa

It was posted last night on the headlines thread. I wonder how Kris hooked up with that sax player? He said they just met that day?

Good to hear the Heifder event is sold out. It is a small event though — I think less than 300 tickets were supposed to be available. Hopefully we will get some video of Kris talkign about his experiences in Rwanda. Too bad he won’t be performing…

Both Heifer International and Tom’s Shoes are great charities. I wish them much success at their event. It’s fabulous that Kris gives so much time to such worthy organizations.

  46. Carrie (1)-Undo It (Country)

I hope this means undo it is Carrie’s next single!

Nigel tweeted today that season 2 contestant Allison Holker is one of the all-stars.

  47. I wondering now if Kris will even get another appearence on Idol before the finale. I guess Kris is not performing during IGB they will just show tapped stuff from Kris’s trip to Haiti. For me, IGB would be a good place to debute his new single whichever one is chosen because of the huge audience. If the song is AWM Ford might appreciate it since they are using his song in their commercials. It’s a telethon and an entertainment showcase to get people to donate. He has done his charity work already now it’s time to get down to business.

  48. In the interview today he said he’ll be in the Bahamas around that time, the gig there is around the same time as Idol Gives Back. But yeah it would have been nice.

  49. ilovekrisallen39, I don’t doubt you since I did not hear the interview but the the Bahamas gig on the 17th. So, maybe Kris is taking a little vacation. Time is counting down on his reign and he may not get another chance to be on AI until the finale. If he is not on the show for IGB or the following week, I doubt they would have him on twice in May. That is way too long to wait for single #2 to be released.

  50. tripp-ncwy when is he suppose to do the first gig with Keith Urban.Isn’t it sometime around that time.

  51. tripp-ncwy when is he suppose to do the first gig with Keith Urban.Isn’t it sometime around that time.

    April 23rd

  52. Tripp_nywc

It’s a good thing Kris isn’t performing on IGB, because they would probably make him do another cover song. He said nothing on his album was appropriate to sing for the Haiti charity performance, and that would likely be the case with IGB. The LAST thing Kris needs to do is to perform another cover song rather than his own songs on Idol.

His concert in the Bahamas is on the 17th. His concert in Vegas with Keith Urban is on the 23rd. He could easily appear on Idol on the 28th of April unless that conflicts with another gig.

  53. I just love Kris’s reaction as that guy was singing ROF,he is just so adorable. I just love how real he is. No poker face on Kris that’s for sure.

  54. We Are The Fallen (Carly’s band) (10)-Bury Me Alive (7 Active Rock, 2 Alternative Rock, 1 Rock)

I think that this is the firs time an idol is getting this kind of push on rock radio. Good for Carly, I hope BMA becomes a hit.

  55. Pic from Danny’s commercial shoot for the Wisconsin eyewear chain. A baby, a dog, and Danny – that pretty much covers all the “awwww” cuteness angles for their eyewear campaign, lol.
Do they make eyewear (protective?) of some type for babies? Almost looks like he or she does have something on, but hard to tell exactly.

  56. Kris is in LA too on April 22, so I think he’ll be there unless he has a long vacation with girlygirl in the Bahamas.

I like him to sing something from his album (second single), but please.. he has spent so much time giving his time for charities before Idol, his Let It Be is for IGB, he then went to Rwanda for charity again (not related to IGB), and on top of that, Kris is not some idol contestant, he was the winner last year. So, do I expect Kris to be invited into the IGB show ? Yes. But who knows ? If TPTB doesn’t like him enough, then he won’t be on IGB.

Of course TPTB loves the runner up so much that he’s going to freaking mentor all the idols next week.

    Yep, I’m bitter.

  57. Steph6449,I wanted to say “Thank You” for giving us updates on Danny news

We try to post at least one Danny comment here for every 50 or 100 Adam or Kris posts, lol…I know some lurkers read the Danny updates at least ;)

Kind of slow this week on the Danny front, he appears to be home in Milwaukee taking a few days off — or possibly working on the eyewear thing before heading to Florida for more concert appearances this weekend.

  58. Speaking of Danny — video has been posted now from the college livestream where Danny appeared in California a couple of weeks ago. Style is closer to the acoustic sets from Danny’s radio tour, than the full-up band he’s been bringing out to the larger venues most recently.

Nice quality though, and a full ~hour of performance captured, see link for Danny Gokey session here –

    http://www.expression.edu/news_and_events/events_pages/#

The band members are Ivan Santiago on bass (also Danny’s brother-in-law), Greg Hagan on lead guitar (played for Little Big Town and others previously), and Brandon Fraley (played for Gretchen Wilson before, and married to one of Carrie’s background vocalists). For most of Danny’s more recent events, they’ve been pulling out the electric guitars and the drummer has been coming along.

I was thinking the other day how lucky us Adam fans were with so much news from his promo tour. I am glad that others favorites are also getting their updates as well. Go S8 :)

  60. I was thinking the other day how lucky us Adam fans were with so much news from his promo tour. I am glad that others favorites are also getting their updates as well. Go S8 :)

Adam was my second favorite, but it seems a bit superfluous usually to post more about him here ;) I haven’t followed exactly his latest promo touring, but if it’s anything like Danny’s, good luck keeping up with him.

There have been times with Danny’s radio tour where he performed for two to three different appearances a day, most often with four or more songs. And often, video would show up of *all* of those — plus interview segments, picture galleries with dozens of pics, etc.

This week is a “quiet week” as after a full plate of events last week, Danny appears to have taken some downtime for Easter. He’s back on the road for Friday and Saturday, when he will be performing at club dates in Tampa and Orlando.

  61. I have Danny’s CD (in rotation with Adam’s and David Cook’s) and I absolutily LOVE every song. I enjoy reading updates about him :)

  62. Ratna12

LOL — I’m pretty sure Katy is going with Kris to the Bahamas and might have something to say if I (or any other fan) tried to hang out with Kris on this trip!

And Kris already said he won’t be performing on IGB — although the show will include some of the footage from his trip to Haiti.

  63. We try to post at least one Danny comment here for every 50 or 100 Adam or Kris posts, lol…I know some lurkers read the Danny updates at least

I read them! I’m a HUGE Adam fan, but I like to see how Danny is doing. I’m hoping he does well in country music. Danny seems to have found a community that is embracing and supporting him.
BTW, the pic is very cute!

  64. Among the S8 Idols, the news is pretty heavily weighted to the Top 3 (Kris, Adam, Danny). For awhile, it was like there wasn’t any info on anyone other than Kris and Adam, but now that Danny’s album is out and he’s doing shows, there’s is suddenly a lot of stuff about him. With all 3 of the guys, it can occasionally seem like information overload — too many articles, videos of performances, etc. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up with it all (esp. with Adam). At other times, it gets a little TOO quiet on the information front, when we seem to be waiting for any little scrap of info (as with trying to find out what’s going on with Kris’s next single). It seems like the farther the person gets away from having been on Idol, the less info there is about what she or he is up to. So I figure that this time next year, we probably won’t be hearing nearly as much about any of these guys.

  65. Since Danny is my #1 I do hang out mostly on Danny forums and wade through all the pics, videos, reviews, etc. posted since the AI tour ended, his radio tour started and now album is out.

Steph6449 is so great about posting some of it here; because I guess some lurkers do appreciate hearing about other Idols.

I know I enjoy coming to MJs to hear what Adam, Kris, Allison have been up to and whatever tidbits I can get about the rest (esp. Matt and Anoop).

You’re right girlygirl; pretty soon the news will be more sparse :(

  66. Speaking on info overload, it seems like Kris is going to be VERY busy flying all around California next week doing gigs!

    Check this:

Monday, 4/12 Hard Rock Cafe, San Diego (w/ Sara Bareilles)
Tuesday, 4/13 (morning) performance for 94.1 FM, San Diego
Tuesday, 4/13 (evening) perf. for 100.5 The Zone FM at The Zone Lounge @ Cafeteria 15L, Sacramento
Wednesday, 4/14 perf. for Star 101.2 FM, San Francisco
Thursday, 4/15 opens for Lady Antebellum, The Wiltern Theatre, Los Angeles

And then he flies out to the Bahamas for his concert there on Saturday the 17th!!
