All of the Idols’ Fiestas will be on display at www.americanidol.com. From March 17 through May 21, 2010 fans 18 and older can enter the Ford Music Video Challenge weekly for a chance to win one of the vehicles and a trip to the set of a Ford Music Video shoot or the grand prize, which includes a Fiesta with their choice of one of the Top 12 designs and tickets to the finale. Official rules and entry details are available at www.americanidol.com/ford/challenge.

Ford began the design process by giving each of the top 12 contestants a palette of nine Fiesta colors to choose from, including vibrant shades like Lime Squeeze, Blue Flame and Bright Magenta. Catching up with David Cook

Cook hopes to have a single ready in April, with the album to be released over the summer, which means he’ll soon have to sequester himself in a recording studio (a producer has yet to be chosen). That may be part of the reason for this unexpected “Idol” appearance. Cook is also scheduled to visit the “If I Can Dream” house on Thursday night (fans can talk to him live via the “Dream” house Twitter). And guess who’s tagging along?

Idol track sales: Adam Lambert takes the top spot

Adam Lambert led all Idols last week with nearly 54, 000 downloads of Whataya Want From Me. Overall, he ranked 20th on Nielsen SoundScan’s Top Digital Tracks chart. Right behind him, at No. 21: Kris Allen, selling nearly 53, 000 copies of Live Like We’re Dying.

As for last week’s Idol performances, the group-sing of Michael Bublé’s Haven’t Met You Yet earned it a 24 percent bump, pushing it past 49, 000 for the week. Owl City’s Fireflies moved up 11 percent after Lee DeWyze’s version, and Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah climbed nearly 400 percent, thanks to Tim Urban.

Idol album sales: Danny Gokey, Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, etc.

Danny Gokey’s weekly sales fell 63 percent last week, taking him from No. 4 on The Billboard 200 to No. 16. My Best Days still remains the week’s best-selling American Idol act, according to Nielsen SoundScan, his 24, 000 sales bringing him to a two-week total of nearly 90, 000.

Daughtry’s Leave This Town fell below the 10, 000 mark for the first time in a while. Still, the album looks to be just a couple weeks away from breaking the million mark.

Kelly Clarkson’s Breakaway more than doubled its week-over-week numbers, surging back into the Billboard 200. Meanwhile, Kris Allen is in danger of falling off that chart entirely. With a 40 percent drop last week, Kris Allen drops from No. 92 to No. 172, less than 600 units away from the bottom of the chart.

Casey James Addresses His Pre-‘American Idol’ Mug Shot

Every season, “American Idol” casts a new batch of aspiring singers. And every season, without fail, tabloids work overtime to dig up as much dirt on the newbies as possible. Whether it’s Antonella Barba’s risqué photos or Bo Bice’s drug arrests, gossip rags and blogs get a ton of mileage out of “Idol” contestants’ youthful indiscretions.

Season nine is no exception. Finalist Casey James is the latest in a long line of “Idol” singers with a rap sheet. Last week, Star magazine published James’ 2001 mug shot, taken when the then-teenager was slapped with a DWI. (James eventually served a monthlong jail sentence in 2003 after getting busted an additional two times.)

  1. I liked that Cook article. I had been dying to know what he thought about Tim singing Come Back to Me, and who is favorites are this year.

  2. Wow I’m shocked he even named favorites. He was so diplomatic last year. Lol oh god, dear David do NOT tell Tim he’s more than welcome to cover more of your songs. My ears are still hurting from the last attempt.

  3. This maybe a little ot, but I just saw The Script on the Today show, and I gotta say, they aren’t that good live. You know, and its not even a hard song to sing – I’m Falling to Pieces – or so it seems. So in taking a snapshot at the music industry, at least whatever Top 40 artists are hitting it hard strong enough that it reaches my ears, there isn’t anything to write home about. Kris Allen may have been the weaker vocalist of the idols, but in comparing him against singers today, he’s up there in the upper echelon. Anyway, sort of pound the table statement.

  4. Well the favorites Cookie named are already voted off (including the blond) so he’s still being diplomatic. He’s smart to have a bit of a filter. Liked his crack about Tim making money for him with the spike in CBTM sales.

all in all a very good interview.

editing to add – I respect your opinion, Rub – but I thought the Script was (were?) great live when I saw them open for David Cook. I’m at work – really – so didn’t see them on TV, but in person they were super.

  5. David do NOT tell Tim he’s more than welcome to cover more of your songs. My ears are still hurting from the last attempt.

I want to hear Tim’s calypso version of Barbasol!

I’m really excited that we might get a Cook single next month! Hopefully a producer will be chosen soon

  6. Matt posted the following video to his Facebook page last night as a treat for his fans. He is singing “Ma Belle Evangeline” from Princess and the Frog.

    That was so cute, lol.

I want to hear Tim’s calypso version of Barbasol!

    Omigod. Ha!

  7. That interview with David Cook was just wonderful!!! He really is “eloquent and insightful”, isn’t he? Sigh. And new music coming soon!!! Yay!!!

  8. Interesting group here.

  9. He’s co-written upward of 30 songs, with another 10 to 15 in the pipeline. He played two for us on Monday night, following a rehearsal for his “Idol” gig. Snap judgment? We’ll give it three Hs: heavy, hooky and full of heart. Cook’s voice has never sounded better.

Cook is also scheduled to visit the “If I Can Dream” house on Thursday night (fans can talk to him live via the “Dream” house Twitter). And guess who’s tagging along?

WTF? How do I get HER job? She gets to hear two new songs and tag along to that Dreamhouse thing (what the heck will Simon Fuller have DC do there, I wonder?) And how does she hear two new songs and not give us more description than that– not even any song titles? Ugh! Sorry, I’m jealous. Still love the girl cuz it’s a GREAT article.

I liked what he said about rearrangements. So much word. I liked Katelyn too. DC did name someone that’s still in the competition that he likes- Crystal.

It was interesting, I kind of write subconsciously and then look back at it, and a lot of the songs are about loss. But not in a hopeless sense. […]It’s almost like being on that precipice of loss and that sense of calm about it. I haven’t deciphered it all yet. Probably a lot is about Adam. [David’s brother died of cancer in 2009.] Yeah, but some hopefulness has come out of that situation too.

Tears… cannot WAIT for this record. And did he say APRIL single?! Wheee! Also? Kris, Archie, and DC hanging out makes me smile :).

P.S. Cookie seems nervous about the RS performance. It was pulled together last minute. Neal almost seemed nervous on twitter. Consequently, I’m NERVOUS for them tonight!

So true. Any given Top 10 on AI (for the most part) is leaps and bounds better than most pop talent outside of the show. Kris is no exception – he is a very good, solid live performer.

Should be interesting to see tonight’s show. I’ve never heard Kesha live, but knowing Blah Blah Blah as I do, that thing is likely to be one autotuned into oblivion hot mess. I heard Orianthi on SYTYCD in the fall, and the guitar playing is truly kick ass awesome, but imo that song sucks and she has next to no charisma when she’s just singing.

David Cook, otoh, should OWN that stage :-) Take note, S9!

  11. On the Toms One Day without shoes that Kris is suppose to do, when you go to the article it doesn’t mention Kris anymore. It says to be announce or something like that. Wonder whats going on, that they took Kris’s name off.

  12. I want to hear Tim’s calypso version of Barbasol!

Now that would totally make my life. LOL!!!!

  13. Oh smallie, that part got to me too. Loss mixed with hope. :'( :) The whole article was outstanding, really. She asked the right questions and got a lot of interesting insight out of him. Had to laugh at the big revelation that he’s not an “Oh baby I love you” lovesong kind of guy. Really, Cook? We haven’t noticed. I could NOT be more excited for this record. And please, Fade Into Me, aka the Kevin Griffin co-penned tune, please make the cut, kthx.

Sometimes I feel like too much emphasis is put on changing the arrangement or changing the vibe of the song. That’s not necessarily what you have to do, you just have to make the song your own, whatever that means. For me, what worked is I knew my voice, but it’s also about internalizing the song and putting it out there in a way that makes it believable coming out of your mouth. That’s the big difference between “Idol” and karaoke.

They should print that out and post it on the rehearsal room wall for all the contestants to read. He nailed it. Pity the judges haven’t really been able to get the point across in a way the kids could understand. Then again, if they did that, we might not get Tim Urban’s calypso Bar Ba Sol. So, yeah, nevermind.

  14. Count me in as another nervous Cook fan for tonight’s performance. I can’t help it. It’s a good thing I won’t be able to watch the show live. I’ll be sure to check in here before I do, so I can brace myself for any eventuality. LOL.

I don’t think he actually hung out with all of them yesterday, since Cook said he was working out and rehearsing, and Allen said he was writing with Kate Voegele.

Apparently Hodges and Emanuel Kiriakou (both of whom have written with Archuleta) have some kind of “challenge” going to get to 3K followers, and so Hodges was name dropping to get more followers. Kind of dirty pool. Heh.

Also, that Cook interview pretty much torpedoed the idea that they sent him to Sweden so that Martin could produce the record, no?

  16. This maybe a little ot, but I just saw The Script on the Today show, and I gotta say, they aren’t that good live.

Really? I saw them perform a whole set live last summer and I thought they were fantastic! Loved them! and immediately downloaded a bunch of their stuff off itunes. Maybe they were just having an off day, or the Today Show set-up was tough for them

  17. I remember Shirley H. saying at one time he was her favorite contestant so I’m not surprised she got such a great interview. The big fans like her and Slezak do the best job and ask the right questions.

IF they manage a single in April, which tbh I’m glad RCA is even thinking of it as a possibility even if it doesnt happen, without a producer yet I’m thinking they must have at least a couple of possible single choices picked out already based on the demos? I mean thats next month already O.o

Also, that Cook interview pretty much torpedoed the idea that they sent him to Sweden so that Martin could produce the record, no?

I only saw a handful of people wondering if MM would produce the whole thing (does he even do entire records? I would think hes too in demand) but many were wondering if they wrote together while he was in Stockholm, especially since he worked all week in his studio. That seems a lot more feasible than actual production work.

  18. I remember Shirley H. saying at one time he was her favorite contestant

Ah, well that explains this part:

(Yes, that’s how we like to think of Cook — with leather.)

    :D Oh Shirley.

This, this, a thousand times this. I really hope the S9 contestants get a chance to talk to Dave tonight, and that he somehow conveys this sentiment to them. There’s been so much focus on the importance of rearranging a song in the “post-David Cook era” of Idol that I think everyone from the contestants to the judges to the media have forgotten exactly what Cook did so successfully. It’s not about rearranging for rearranging’s sake (I’m looking at you Andrew Garcia and Tim Urban), it’s about knowing who you are and finding a way to deliver the song in a believable, authentic way, even within the constraints of the often-deadly theme weeks.

There are so many ways to do this beyond just finding some obscure reggae version or countrifying a pop song. That’s what the contestants aren’t getting this year – every week is different, and you may have to attack the theme in a different way to make it work for you. Cook borrowed some arrangements that helped him broaden the theme so his own style would fit in (Billie Jean, Eleanor Rigby), he did some seriously radical rearrangements of his own so he wouldn’t look ridiculous when the theme was a departure from his own style (Always Be My Baby, Hello, Little Sparrow), he did some more subtle rearrangements that just tweaked the song enough to make it Cookian (The World I Know, All I Really Need is You, Yo’ Face, Baba O’Reily), and he sang some stuff straight in order to honor the song as written and showcase the versatility of his voice (Music of the Night, Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For).

There are some contestants this year that I think have the talent to mold this competition to their will the way Cook and some other notable contestants have done in the past. They just need to find the will and the confidence to do it. Last night was not amazing but it was a step in the right direction. I’m really hoping we see some growth over the next few weeks because I think this season actually is salvageable.

  20. Cook said he liked Crystal, does this give her an unfair advantage now? Shouldn’t he have shared who he liked this season?

Oh well. I think it’s fine and that he has good taste.

  21. My heart is a flutter today since I just read a wonderful article about Cookie and he’s on my tv tonight. If he’s nervous I hope it doesn’t affect him negatively. I’m sure he’ll be just fine. Kinda reminds me of the night he sang “Little Sparrow”, he was so nervous they had to take him to the hospital. But he recovered and came back swinging home runs and haven’t let up yet. I feel he’s anxious to get the album completed, but please don’t rush it. I know he’ll knock it out of the park and we’ll have No 1 hits all across the boards.

I wonder which Steen brother will be drumming?

  24. Love the new Cookie article & Ladymadonna, well said. I’m glad he said what he said about rearranging songs, and it goes to show, if you have a freakin’ clue who you are as artist, you can tweek any song to make it work for you and your voice. Season 9 hasn’t pulled that off very well yet.

  25. Max Martin may be not producing the whole album, but perhaps he produced the new single. He was there for the better part of a week, five days, I think. So maybe they’ve chosen the single and they were turning it from a demo to an actual record track.

“Single out in April” is as little as two weeks and as long as six weeks away. Either way, early enough for him to make another appearance on AI to promote it.

Lucky Shirley Halperin got to hear two songs (we don’t know whether they’re the two new songs fans have already heard) and lyrics from at least one song the fans have definitely not heard yet. How do I get her job?

  26. That was a lot of Davids in one place with Hodges, Cook and Archuleta! Kris might have felt left out! I know Hodges is writing with Cook and has written with Kris — has he written with Archie, too? I wonder if they were working, or just hanging out? I bet it was fun, either way.

Kris and his band left for Wichita this morning. 4 shows over the next 4 days…2 with OneRepublic.

  27. That was a lot of Davids in one place with Hodges, Cook and Archuleta! Kris might have felt left out!

Not sure if they were all together or separately with Hodges throughout the day (in which case, dude, getting around there, DH!), but I’m hoping it’s the former. I love Idol friendships cuz I’m silly like that. If they were hanging out, I hope they got played some ping pong– doubles, maybe? From past tweets Cook and Hodges were tied at 1 – 1 with their ping pong matches. OT, but I love ping pong =P.

ETA: Wow possible single next month? If that indeed happens, it’s not that far away.

  29. Max Martin may be not producing the whole album, but perhaps he produced the new single.

If that were the case, then why would he say “a producer?” He’s been pretty consistent about the use of that article. If one producer does a single, then why wait to work with just one more for the rest of the album?

I think it’s more that he thinks that he and the band can get in and track in just a few weeks as soon as the right person comes on line.

Not sure if they were all together or separately with Hodges throughout the day (in which case, dude, getting around there, DH!), but I’m hoping it’s the former.

Again, this didn’t happen. Cook and Allen’s tweets confirmed they were elsewhere. It was a joke to try and pull ahead in the follower competition with Kiriakou.

  30. standtotheright

Did David Cook and Kris tweet that they weren’t hanging with Hodges? I haven’t seen that. People are often in several places in a day. Just because Kris said he had been writing with Kate Voegele doesn’t mean he couldn’t have also hung out at some point during the day/night with David Hodges. Same thing with David Cook…

  31. Kris tweeted yesterday – Got started on a kool song with @katevoegele today. Now it’s sushi time!

—and kate voegele tweeted -‘Just wrote a great song with @krisallen in the studio! Hes such a sweetheart and so talented…cooking dinner @ home now, sxsw tomorrow!’

She also tweeted that she’s excited to be supporting Jordan Sparks on her summer tour.

Now I’m curious who they wrote the song for.

  32. I mostly think they weren’t all together because I’d be really shocked if none of them would mention it on there that they all saw each other, especially the Davids who I don’t believe have seen each other in quite a while.

  33. girlygirl, my understanding is that writing sessions are usually several hours. Yes, it is technically possible that somewhere between the studio and sushi, Allen dropped by and hung out with Hodges. And it is possible that Cook, somewhere between working out, rehearsing for his nationally televised performance, and dinner with his family, did the same. And it’s even possible that neither of them (or Archie) felt compelled to mention it.

But Occam’s Razor suggests that when Hodges’ prior tweet was to Kiriakou about not having been around to watch the progress of the “follower challenge,” and when he flat-out says he’s just name dropping, one shouldn’t actually take it seriously as an account.

  34. Is it sad that the first thing I thought of when I woke up this morning was “It’s Wednesday — Cook’s gonna be on my TV tonight!”? Or is that just par for the course in Cookistan?

  35. Apologies in advance for this totally useless post… but I’m really nervous for Cookie’s performance tonight!! EEK! That is all. Carry on everyone :). See you at 9ET.

Why be nervous? I’m sure Cookie will rock it. His band is super tight by now, and not as if JJF is that hard a song. It’s fun, they’ll have fun, it will be fun. And yes, I look forward to a Stones song sung well. Oh no, comparisons. Oh wells.

  45. I know Hodges is writing with Cook and has written with Kris — has he written with Archie, too?

I don’t know if he’s written with Archie but it wouldn’t surprise me if he did. David Hodges cowrote Crush and he’s working with lots of people from AI lately. In addition to the already mentioned he’s written with Carrie (What Can I Say), Daughtry (What About Now which he didn’t write with Chris, Open Up Your Eyes and Supernatural which he did), and Allison (You Don’t Know Me). He cowrote Because Of You and Addicted with Kelly and then became the inspiration for Never Again. He’s a very good writer IMO.

  46. LOL seriously

Truthinesss,I bet Brian chose the picture on purpose…but I wouldn’t know…I didnt read the article

Maybe if DC impresses me tonight I’ll buy smite one of his songs.(That means I’ll hav something fom
his that’s not magic rainbow ;))

and so far this quarter,off-topic, but my drama teacher has mentioned Adam 2 times. She mentioned Adam,JHud, and Kelly as belters (well she said Adam was probably a wailer XD)
she also mentioned th cell phone incident

    Tierbee,SHUT UP!!! :)

    Thank fo telling me:)

I obviously missed it.I really hope they add it soon…

  47. I thought of you when I heard it. I am in the car a lot and that was the first time I heard 99.5 spin it – was excited for you DC Adam fans :). Sounded great on the radio (I never saw any reason why WWFM shouldn’t be a big hit).

  48. Maybe if DC impresses me tonight I’ll buy smite one of his songs.(That means I’ll hav something fom
his that’s not magic rainbow )

Hmm, you have magic rainbow? Excuse me while I barf. *barf* Nobody could make me like that song. Heh. I’d tell you to buy Kiss on the Neck but you can’t get that on iTunes. What kind of music do you like? If you’re gonna buy a couple songs my personal recommendations are Mr. Sensitive, Bar-ba-sol, and maybe Avalanche for good measure. Then again you could totally hate his performance tonight, and never go near his songs. ;)

ETA: I just wanted to edit to say I love how there’s no time limit on editing.

  49. He cowrote Because Of You and Addicted with Kelly and then became the inspiration for Never Again.

That still cracks me up… “Hope the ring you gave her turns her finger green”. I had the impression he was this A-hole, but he seems like such a nice guy on twitter. Wonder what his wife thinks of that song? And I agree, I think he’s a really good writer, based on the handful of songs I know that he’s co-written.

    ETA:

One time David tweeted something about working with Dave Hodges, Chris Daughtry tweeted DC in response saing something like ‘he’s such a great guy and beautiful soul’ and Chris got hit with all these ‘ NO HE’S NOT! JUST ASK KELLY!’ tweets lol

That is SO FUNNY! I love me some breakup anthems from Kelly, but that song is SO bitter! I love it though. If you look at the lyrics, it’s totally realistic perspective from the “wronged” girl, even though the guy and the other girl could totally have a different read of what went down. I can totally see that. Ha, I kinda heart that song. The way she does it in concert now is great, too, it’s all ramped up and remixed so it’s harder and faster.

  50. Oh you don’t even know!

Ok so gonna be shallow here for a minute but is it wrong that yesterday when he tweeted he ‘spent the day’ preparing for the performance tonight that one of those things included going shopping? preferably something with short sleeves?

  51. Ok so gonna be shallow here for a minute but is it wrong that yesterday when he tweeted he ’spent the day’ preparing for the performance tonight that one of those things included going shopping? preferably something with short sleeves?

Please don’t kill me with thoughts and images like that because I don’t know if I could survive that. I’m trying to be sane and coherent at least until the performance is over. After that, I can’t make any promises. Heh

  52. Ok so gonna be shallow here for a minute but is it wrong that yesterday when he tweeted he ’spent the day’ preparing for the performance tonight that one of those things included going shopping? preferably something with short sleeves?

Oh God, please! And no tie … k, Cookie?

  53. Tim Urban, one of the current Top 12 finalists, performed your song “Come Back to Me” during Hollywood week. What was that like for you?

I saw that, actually. It was cool. I was flattered. Hollywood week is so tough, and I thought he did a great job with the song. He seemed a little nervous, which I probably would have been too. But yeah, I saw the sales numbers go up a little bit from that, so that was very much appreciated. He’s helped me pay my bills. If Tim wants to do another one, I wouldn’t be opposed.

from david’s la times interview! haha. way to go tim, you help pay david’s bills. just for that you dont deserve to go this week.

and wow, doesn’t david look hot in the cover?

  54. I posted this on a dying thread last week so don’t know if anyone saw it. The closest Top 40 station to me is Tuscaloosa, AL. Last week when Mom and I were returning from Nashville, we were coming into Birmingham and picked up the Tuscaloosa station where they were playing Top 8 at 8. Ke$ha had #5 and #7–with BBB and Tic Toc, respectively. Adam was sandwiched into #6 with WWFM between Ke$ha’s. Thought that was pretty appropriate since they like each other so much. Since I don’t listen to radio very much, I don’t know how long they’ve been playing WWFM. I know they did on OHP and Ryan Secrest’s show when the song was released. But just on local authority, I can’t say. I just had to smile cause you just never know (in this neck of the woods).

I can’t figure out how they will be able to censor BBB tonight on Idol but will be watching because of this good lineup of these three guests.

  55. Looking forward to David Cook. Pretty sad for AI9 when I skipped the performance night expecting not-so-goodness, but am happy to watch the results show to see someone get voted off and enjoy a new DC performance ;)

Danny is back on the road after a short break following his Opry appearance. He has another sold-out show this evening, in Portland Oregon area. There are at least three more performance events Thursday/Friday in California.

dannygokey: Excited 4 tonight’s show in Portland. The show SOLD-OUT & all the proceeds go 2 the American Cancer Society. Great Music & Great Cause

  56. I know Hodges is writing with Cook and has written with Kris — has he written with Archie, too?

I dont know if he’s written WITH him, but he has co-written FOR him for his upcoming album, with eman and claude kelly I think it was.

  57. Radio station in California promoting a concert by Danny tomorrow night. Haven’t seen this one before. That makes at least four appearances Thursday and Friday near San Francisco, Sacramento, Santa Rosa, Stockton CA areas.

  58. Cook said he liked Crystal, does this give her an unfair advantage now?

It doesn’t bother me if past contestants or idols say who they like, as long as they don’t say people should vote for them. Heck, Blake has a blog in Idol Chatter. So did Phil Spacey (LA Times) and I know our friend in crappy pictures gives his opinion as well.

I remember Adam got quite the blacklash for saying which performances he liked during one of the “boys” shows. I think the reaction he got was OTT.

Personally, I find it interesting to get past idols and contestants’ perspectives as they have experience on the AI stage. To me, it’s like interviewing an expert in the field. But YMMV.

  59. Other than the winners, who to me need to function sort of as ambassadors for the show, I’m not sure I care really even if previous year finalists do suggest voting for someone by name.
Most people will make their own decisions, regardless, just like with the judges’ opinions.

  60. Interesting:

The Fox reality show’s ratings are down compared to last year’s big stage debut. Yahoo! Searches on Season 9 contestants have fallen by more than half compared to Season 8’s crew. Even frontrunner Crystal Bowersox pulls in only 27% of the lookups that Adam Lambert did in Top 13 week (a strange 2009 twist, but essentially same as Top 12 week).

Also, there will be a cellcast for tomorrow’s event featuring Kris here: http://ustre.am/dUCC (provided by @weareteambieber)

  62. that was an awesome interview. i love that he’s going for more of a live sound. hear that producers? don’t mess that up.

    Cook is always better live.

  63. idolsnow: # David Cook’s performance of “Jumpin’ Jack Flash’ will be available as a paid download on iTunes.

  64. Last night’s performances were strange. Rolling Stones: Now Without the Rock edition (tm BootStar). Hopefully, David Cook fixes that situation. *throws devil horns and sticks out tongue* Heh.

  65. Next week’s theme for the show (according to AINow) – Teen Idols. So, does this mean Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus will be the guest mentor?

Thanks girlygirl. By any chance do you know around what time ?
Kansas is Central time , so 1 hour ahead of CA, I guess.

Edit: major fail on the blockquote. Can’t repair it.
