Judge throws out confession in hit-run death of ‘Idol’ hopeful Alexis Cohen

TOMS RIVER — A judge has thrown out the confession of a 25-year-old Toms River man in the hit-and-run death of an ‘American Idol’ hopeful because detectives did not advise him of his right against self-incrimination prior to questioning him.

Daniel J. Bark, 25, of Huddy Drive, was being bailed out of the Ocean County Jail by family members late this afternoon after Superior Court Judge Wendel E. Daniels lowered Bark’s bail from $150, 000 to $25, 000.

Outside Daniels’ courtroom, Nolan said Bark was “browbeaten” into confessing to something he did not do.

Daniels scheduled a conference in the case for March 21.

‘American Idol’ Finalist Lauren Alaina Thinks Judges Are Nailing It

“I think the judges do exactly what they’re there to do, ” said the 16-year-old teen phenom when MTV News caught up with her and the rest of the “Idol” top 13 at Thursday night’s celebration of this year’s top singers. “When they need to be harsh, they’re harsh. I know that sounds crazy, but … they don’t sugar coat it, most of the time. When they need to say something, they’re gonna say it. Which is great, because it makes you stronger.”

With Billie Joe Gone, ‘American Idiot’ Ticket Sales Plunge

As the Green Day song in Broadway’s “American Idiot” goes, “give me novacaine” — please. In its first week of performances without the band’s frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong, as the special guest star in the cast, “American Idiot” saw a painful drop in its box office grosses, falling from $1.3 million to $395, 275 for its standard eight performances through Sunday.

While many musicals and plays also sold fewer tickets in what is typically a poor-selling week on Broadway’s calendar, “American Idiot” declined the most and ran to only half-full houses. That sort of steep fall-off, with no obvious turnaround strategy in sight, usually leads a Broadway show to post a closing notice. Asked on Monday if one was coming for “American Idiot, ” a spokesman for the show declined to comment. The lead producers were not immediately available for comment.

Reinventing ‘Idol’: Will The Reality Veteran Finish Up In The Ratings Without Simon?

Things are very different this year, with the research pointing to excitement about the show coming back. Why?

First, the contestants. “We didn’t have showmen and showwomen last season, ” Beckman said. “You never felt like you had a real competition.” This year, the feedback from viewers participating in the panels has been enthusiastic, with them saying that there are so many good singers going into the live shows that “we don’t know who is going to win.”

Secondly, the judges. Fox’s research last season showed that viewers hated having a four-person judging panel. The network took notice and reverted to a 3 judges. Then there was the summer judge panel overhaul prompted by the departures of Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres. “We re-imagined it a way that resonates with the audiences, ” Beckman said. He said viewers polled in the fall were skeptical about new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez. But the attitude has since changed. “Baseline research indicates that the skepticism has all gone away, ” he said. “People feel that Steven and Jennifer are more invested in the kids, have a more nurturing attitude, and are feeling the music.”

As ‘Idol’ Surges, New Judges Tune Up Their Feedback

American Idol is holding on to its place at the top of the ratings, despite losing its biggest star, incisive judge Simon Cowell. But back in January, when the new season started, Idol’s continued success wasn’t a given.

This week we’re getting to the big performance shows. Fans know this is where the rubber meets the road — for singers AND the judges. It’s where beloved comic Ellen DeGeneres crashed and burned last year, uncomfortable as a critic and uneasy around fellow judges.
