Did ‘American Idol’ Slander the Bronx?

The feel-good story of an “American Idol” contestant’s journey from gritty Bronx to glitzy Hollywood didn’t feel so good to the Bronx borough president.

In a statement expressing his disgust — titled “American Idol’s Slander of the Bronx” — Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. alleged Thursday that the popular television show portrayed his beloved borough as a crime-infested dump.

“They have basically erased two and a half decades of work in a minute and a half, ” Diaz said in an interview. “They depict the borough as if it was still the ’70s or ’80s.”

What Former ‘Idol’ Contestants Thought of Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler

Aussie singer Michael Johns, who finished in eighth place on the seventh season, also supported Lopez, who seemed to have a tough time turning away contestants on Wednesday’s premiere (“Why did I sign up for this?!” she exclaimed at one point.)

“I think she just didn’t realize how hard it is to break someone’s heart, ” said Johns. “Ellen [DeGeneres] experienced that too.”

But Johns (who is working on a new album, with Jackson, due in the fall) said Tyler “was amazing. He had perfect critiques, was funny and knew when to be stern. I did dig how Steven knew lyrics and jammed out a little. It was a cool moment.”
