Going back in time: my early days with ‘Idol, ’ part one

In April, 2002, Fox was trying to get us to cover the auditions of this new show “American Idol” at the AmericasMart downtown. We said no. Why? We were covering Music Midtown and nobody knew what this show was.

At that time, I was covering radio, nightlife and youth culture. I was not covering television. We had two writers full time doing that. But when the first VHS advance screener for “Idol” arrived at the AJC, neither of them were interested in a reality program that looked like summer cannon fodder. It landed on my desk. I shrugged my shoulders. Hey, why not?

This is a pretty fun read. Check it out at AJC

“Silencing the Song: An Afghan Fallen Star” Debuts Jan. 26 on HBO2

In the 2010 HBO documentary “Afghan Star, ” Setara, a young singer, was voted off the “American Idol”-style show of the same name. Caught up in the emotion of the moment, she danced across the stage and her head scarf slipped, revealing her hair. The incident sparked an uproar in post-Taliban Afghanistan, where music, dancing and TV were completely banned just ten years ago, with some traditionalists saying Setara “deserves to be killed.”

In the new documentary SILENCING THE SONG: AN AFGHAN FALLEN STAR, “Afghan Star” director Havana Marking revisits Setara as she deals with ever-present threats to her safety and starts a new life as a wife and mother-to-be, while continuing to nurture dreams of becoming a pop-music idol. Debuting WEDNESDAY, JAN. 26 (8:00-8:45 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO2, this intimate portrait will be immediately preceded by an encore presentation of “Afghan Star” at 6:30 p.m.

I was wearing clothes from the 1800s that were big and uncomfortable. ‘Glee’ also films on the lot, and I love the show, ” Steinfeld told J-14 magazine. “I saw Lea Michele just walking to her trailer, and I was like, ‘That’s the girl from ‘Glee.’ I’ve got to go ask for her autograph!’ So I walked up to her and asked for her autograph, but she walked by and a guy came and said, ‘Sorry, now’s not a good time!'”

The young actress, who stars alongside Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges in ‘Grit, ‘ was so heartbroken by the brush off that she left in tears. “I had to walk all the way back to the car wearing what I was wearing. I was practically crying on the way home, ” Steinfeld said. “I was so sad! But she’s beautiful, and she has an amazing voice.”
