After Midnight’s Fantasia Barrino on the Star She Would Love to Play Onscreen & How Broadway Is Like Church – How much fun are you having in After Midnight? – We feel exactly how it looks. Everybody in the show is a fan of the Cotton Club era, and we want to honor the people who came before us. Every night, we say, “Let’s enjoy ourselves. Let’s put a smile on the face of someone who has never seen a Broadway show.” Are there particular singers from that era who inspire you? Oh, of course. Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Cab Calloway…they’re all favorites of mine. When I sing “Stormy Weather,” I always picture Lena Horne, who was an amazing, beautiful woman. I want to let their legacy live on, so I keep it very authentic. These songs are my babies. – Read more at Broadway.com

‘Idol’ alum James Durbin gives back – “It’s just so much fun to jam on these new songs—especially when you’re playing acoustic,” Durbin says. “You don’t have to worry about so much about staying with every ebb and flow of the song itself and how it originally is. You can change the tempo a little bit, change the mood and the vibe to fit with the acoustics. That’s where it all comes from is acoustics. Every song I’ve written on this record was written with an acoustic guitar. It’s fun to show them kind of how they originally were before introducing everyone to what they sound like on the record. It creates for a lot more musicianship I guess. I am a musician, after all.” Durbin says every song on “Celebrate” is a potential single, something of which he is proud. – Read more at ecollegetimes.com

Keith Urban interview: Country-pop star talks ‘American Idol’ and defying musical categorization – What made you decide to come back to the show, even though all the other judges from last season left? I enjoyed it! I like this process. I really love being a part of finding somebody. In some ways, I feel like we operate like a little record company in the middle of this big reality TV show. The thing I’m loving the most is – we might have 70 people in a day. Yesterday, we had 160 people or something in (laughs), just mind-numbing amounts of vocalists. But when someone walks on stage and starts singing something and it just Oof! It gets your attention. Then I’m really interested in whatever guidance we can offer them. A lot of the time, it’s just shedding some bad habits, simple things that you do early in your career, things that I’ve done or maybe still do, and I can spot it. I love helping somebody grow, and watching them grow. Not to sound cheesy but, the thing I’ve loved about watching “Idol” is seeing a diamond-in-the-rough talent. They’ve got nothing going on, except they’ve got “It.” They’ve got something. Over the course of the months, you’re watching them week to week to week, and if they get in the top five or even win, you look back to the audition – and that’s an incredible thing to see. – Read more at mlive.com
