HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Dec 30-Jan 5

With 50.65% of reports in, the “Frozen” soundtrack is leading the chart. Soundtracks used to be a fairly lucrative side-line for movies, but they have lost their appeal in recent years. Partly because movies don’t typically feature as many songs (not as many montages) and people seem not as into the background music as they once were. Changing Oscar rules also meant that fewer big artists were willing to officially attach their random songs to the end credit sequence (songs now had to have something to do with the actual movie and not just the credits). Most successful soundtracks lately are from movies aimed at young adults and chock full of up-and-coming indie artists. Either that or the odd successful Broadway musical movie adaptation. I don’t remember the last time a Disney movie had a number one soundtrack. Heck, I don’t remember the last time a January had two albums at more than 100K at the 50% mark or even the final report. So, congrats “Frozen”!

Trailing not too far behind is Beyonce who is still capitalizing on her sudden-release gamble by showing some solid legs. Katy Perry is third with “Prism”, followed by Luke Bryan who seems to have a permanent lease on the 4th spot and Lorde is fifth. I really like seeing a top 5 filled with a Soundtrack anchored by female characters, a female R&B superstar, a female pop superstar and an emerging female artist with a unique sound. Roar!

X-Factors One Direction continues to do well at 6th, Eminem always does well at 7th, One Republic is counting money at 8th, Lady Gaga is doing whatever she does at 9th and Now 47 pops up to 10th (take that Now 48!).

Besides One Direction, reality singing contestants are represented by Daughtry (33rd) and Danielle Bradbery (46th). Adam Lambert and Joch Krajcik are featured on Aviici’s “True” at 18th. Jordin Sparks helped to write the lead-off single for Ariana Grande’s album at 46th and Carrie Underwood is heavily featured in the “Sound of Music” soundtrack (starting and ending with soundtracks from female anchored movies – see Hollywood!).
