Life after ‘American Idol’: A reality check after reality TV – Over the past 12 years, contestants have finished their runs on the show (and the subsequent arena tour) and settled in Nashville, where they try to build careers on the most intense and memorable months of their lives. Most of them will never reach the same heights of fame and ubiquity again. “They kind of just shove you in there,” says part-time Nashvillian Paul McDonald, who finished in eighth place on “Idol” in 2011. “And then when it all ends, you go, ‘Whoa, that was awesome. Now, how do I do that again?’ ” McDonald’s season is known for its champion Scotty McCreery and runner-up Lauren Alaina, two teenage country singers who were immediately embraced by Music Row after “Idol.” – Read more at Tennessean.com

Still confident, Johnson is charging ahead into “Idol” for a third time. His experience is “an advantage over the other contestants,” he said. “I’m more comfortable with the cameras.” Johnson expects to get some TV time this week as “Idol” rolls into its 13th season (8 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday on Fox and WHNS/Channel 21). ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ judges praise Philly talent – By midafternoon, Lythgoe and fellow judge Mary Murphy, along with guest judge Billy Porter, had seen about 10 solo performances and had already sent two dancers through to the Vegas week callback performances where dancers vie for a spot in the top 20. (Others may have gotten through. Some dancers that the judges are on the fence about are asked to come back at the end of the day for another dance challenge.) Although Lythgoe and the vivacious Murphy are regulars on the series, the Pittsburgh-born-and-raised Porter, who just won a Tony for his performance as the heroine drag queen in Broadway’s “Kinky Boots,” was new to the proceedings. Porter isn’t new to Philly. He’s performed with the Philly Pops and directed “Being Alive” at the Philadelphia Theatre Company in 2007. His sister is even a Temple alum. – Read more at Philly.com

Executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe, tweeted a photo with Mary Murphy and Billy Porter “Having a great time at Philly auditions. Billy Porter is a great judge. #SYTYCD”
