Tori Kelly Takes Off – “I’m grateful for my time on American Idol, because after that I definitely became a better songwriter because a fire was lit inside me,” she says talking about her stint on the famed Fox singing competition when she was just 16 years-old. “I learned a lot from being on that show, especially with the camera in your face 24/7 trying to catch you slip-up somehow… which is nothing against the show.” Kelly, who was voted off right before the live, televised performance rounds began, says her experience with Idol “couldn’t have worked out better. I’m not tied to them at all, and in a way I gained exposure without making it onto the show. I became ‘The Girl Who Didn’t Make It’, which I think interested people into following my journey.” – Read more at American Songwriter

Maksim Chmerkovskiy’s DWTS Return: I Have to Avoid Being a Hypocrite – Maksim Chmerkovskiy will make his judging debut on Dancing with the Stars on Monday and he tells PEOPLE he can’t wait. “I never thought this would happen. I’m excited to be back,” he says. The fiery dancer, who often went toe-to-toe with the judges, insists there was never any bad blood between them. “We had our run-ins but it’s like [my brother] Val and me. We are the closest of people and obviously get into arguments,” he says. “I have to be the person that I thought they should have been at the times I disagreed with their remarks,” he says. “It will be interesting for me to see, ‘Now you are in a position that you criticized before. Let’s see you do better.'” “I’m not going to be as critical because someone’s kicks aren’t as crisp as they should be because I know who I am looking at and I see what their potential is,” he says. “I will do my best with constructive criticism and with giving positive reinforcement.” – Read more at People

‘Dancing With the Stars’ showrunner on format change: ‘The voting isn’t ideal.’ – We also talked about the possibility of getting everyone to learn a dance and then eliminating someone at the top of the following show, which is the other way you could do it. And then people could vote on the people who are left behind. And that was the toss-up, really. But So You Think You Could Dance did that, and it was not good, to the point where they changed it. There’s very few options. If you want everyone in the country to vote and you only have one show a week, then something has to give. I think starting the show with an elimination doesn’t feel right. And also, it’s very difficult to turn to ten people, eight people, and say “All of you are gonna learn a dance; for one of you, it doesn’t matter.” If you feel you’re in the bottom of that group and you didn’t do well, you’re thinking really? I’m gonna do blood, sweat, and tears? And then it’s such a terrible letdown. I think it really affects morale as well. So while this is a slightly odd system, it’s the system we actually used in the first season — this process of last week’s public vote with this week’s judges’ scores. – Read more at Entertainment Weekly
