Freshman High Schooler Carrie Underwood Sings “Broken Wing” (VIDEO)

The remarkable thing about this video of high school freshman, Carrie Underwood, covering Martina McBride’s “Broken Wing” at the 1998 Miss Westark pageant, is how fully formed she was as a vocalist, even at that young age. The future American Idol winner could not have been older than 15, yet that voice is still so recognizable.

The video was posted last month by the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith. But it’s only now that the performance has gone viral on the internet. Carrie has always had strong, pure, country vocals. Where the singer has made the biggest strides over the years is in her ability to work a big stage and own it.

But that voice…some things never change.

You can catch Carrie tonight (6/17) at the Faster Horses Festival in Brooklyn Mississippi.
