Fantasia on Her New Album and Not Being Afraid to Do It Her Way – “Sleeping With The One I Love,” the latest single from the singer Fantasia, is surely one of the more unusual songs on radio at the moment. At a time when nearly all beats on the airwaves, regardless of genre, bear the influence of hip-hop, this one is reminiscent of 1966—James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” or a towering James Bond theme performed by Shirley Bassey. “I wasn’t scared [to put out the song],” the 32-year-old singer tells Vogue.com on the phone ahead of the release of her fifth studio album, The Definition Of . . . . “Everybody else was. Everything is so boxed in, and everyone has a certain view of what an artist should be,” she adds. “Well, that’s weird. If you know what I should be, that doesn’t make me an artist, correct? You’re prostituting my gift, telling me what to wear and how to sing so it can sound like what’s hot right now.” – Read more at Vogue.com

Today, she insists, those dark days are behind her, as the new album announces a self-confident, fully realized Fantasia, emboldened by a wave of fresh starts: In addition to her marriage, she signed with new management, Primary Wave (Cee Lo Green, Melissa Etheridge); connected with a new producer, Ron Fair (Christina Aguilera, Keyshia Cole); and set course on a different, free-flowing musical direction, incorporating jazz, country, funk and pop in songs she deems “rock soul.” – Read more at Billboard.com
