HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Oct 21-27

With 68.46% of reports in, Katy Perry is Roaring to the top of the charts. She’s beating number 2 Miley by almost an order of magnitude (well, 7x). Some have expressed disappointment in her 275-300K predictions, but it is an up-tick from the 192K her previous album opened with. “Teenage Dream” was a very successful album that kept churning out hits and sales. It would go onto sell 2.7M in the US and produce 5 Hot 100 chart toppers – only the second time an album has done that (Michael Jackson’s “Bad” being the first). Katy Perry certainly knows how to write/record a hit. Strangely, HDD still doesn’t know how to spell her name (see, I’m not the only one with name typos!).

Miley Cyrus is expected to have the number 2 album for her second week. She’s predicted to sell 40-45K this week which is a 40-45% drop which is a tad on the high side for a third week (usually 40% so it’s not totally scary). Canadian Rapper Drake is 3rd, Kiwi AAA artist Lorde is 4th and Seattle Grungers Pearl Jam are 5th. Pearl Jam was 1st last week with 170K in sales (we want to compare HDD numbers to HDD numbers, so we’ll ignore BB) and this week they are predicted to have 35-40K. That constitutes a fairly hefty 76-79% drop. Let’s see if the press is a quick to point that out as they are when Pop or Idol acts plummet like that. Front-loaded sales anybody? Still, it is amazing they continue to rack up the big numbers this long into the game.

Luke Bryan clambers back into the top 10 (remember when he used to be parked at number 4 for weeks on end), DJ Khaled is debuting at 7th, Justin Timberlake is 9th and AFI (no, not the film guys with the top 100 lists – these are a Californian rock band) are 10th.

X-Factor US’s Fifth Harmony released an EP and it is expected to do quite well. It’s currently in 8th, but is predicted to rise into the top 6 with 30-35K in sales. Simon is pretty consistently getting some decent sales for his acts. Fifth Harmony finished 3rd on the 2nd season and not all shows get that much success for third place finishers. Of course, it always helps if Simon likes you.

American Idol Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery is currently in 12th (and may rise a slot) in his second week with his sophomore album. He’s predicted to sell 21-24K which constitutes a 52-58% drop in his second week which is better than the norm (70%). Cassadee Pope, winner of the third season of The Voice is currently in 17th during her third week.
