HDD – Album Sales Prediction : Mar 16-22

With 75.13% of reports in, Kendrick Lamar is going to take this one in a walk. This innovative rapper from California has already sold more than the other nine albums in the top 10 combined. Now, we all know that HDD does not report linearly, but it is rarely that far off the mark. Pundits are predicting a 300-325K sales week with 340-365K once streams and downloads are included. This will be his first number one album.

Empire Cast topped the combined chart and was second on sales last week. They are likely to be second in sales again this week (and second on combined). They are predicted to sell 60-65K (which they already have reported) and combined 80-85K. That’s a strong hold-over in their second week, but not surprising after the massive ratings their finale garnered last week. Empire is followed by two debuts – Modest Mouse and Marina and the Diamonds. “Strangers to Ourselves” will be rock band Modest Mouses’s second debut in the top 10. Their last album debuted at number one. Marina and the Diamonds sounds like a band, but it is actually a Welsh singer-songwriter (much like Five for Fighting is really just one guy too – and despite his hockey themed stage name, he’s not even Canadian). Anyway, Marina is from Brynmawr (try saying that five times) in Wales and works an indie pop vein.

Our old friend Taylor Swift continues to live in the top 10, currently at fifth. Luke Bryan continues to enterintain the spring break crowd at 6th, while Fifty Shades of Grey whips into 7th. Drake is 8th (but expect him to rise for the final charts) and the top 10 is rounded out by two more debuts: AWOLNATION (Electo-Rock) and Sleeping With Sirens (Post-Hardcore) are 9th and 10th respectively.

Kelly Clarkson from American Idol falls to 22nd while Carrie Underwood sees a slight up-tick to 44th. One Direction from X-Factor holds steady as it clings to the bottom of the top 50 chart. They are also featured on Now 53 which is at 14th. Judges representing at 18th with Maroon 5’s “V”.
