With 68.46% of reports in, Luke Bryan isn’t about to let anybody crash his party. With a monstrous opening week last week (3rd best of the year and best opening for a male country artist in 9 years), even typical drops will yield impressive sales. “Crash My Party” is expected to sell in the 170K range. Even more impressive is that this is not his only album to top the BB200 chart this year. He has made a regular habit of releasing EPs for Spring Break and he topped the chart with “Spring Break…Hear to Party” with a total of 491K in sales back in March (and that one was just a compilation album). I know somebody who has a very, very happy label.
Meanwhile, the top debut of the week comes from Taylor Swift’s former boyfriend, John Mayer. John has been having serious vocal issues in recent years and has had to have surgery. “Paradise Valley” is predicted to retain the number 2 slot with 150K in sales. This is John’s 6th studio album.
TGT (a group of R&B singers consisting of Tyrese, Ginuwine, and Tank) is set to debut in third, Jimmy Buffet continues to party with “Songs from St. Somewhere” (his 29th studio album!!!) at 4th and Earl Sweatshirt (an LA based rapper) rounds out the top 5 with his “Doris”.
Miley Cyrus’s duet partner from the VMAs, Robin Thicke seems to have some legs with “Blurred Lines” (the single with the same name is still dominating radio charts including topping Top 40, Hot AC, Urban, Urban AC and Rhythmic, but has had to yield the top of the digital charts. “Blurred Lines” is expected to sell about the same as it did in the previous week and stay in 6th. The album may even see a burst in sales after that VMA performance because “obviously” he was the victim and had no clue what Miley was about to do (*cough*). Answer me this…why did all the female solo performers at the VMAs feel compelled to perform in bras or less, but the guys get to remain fully clothed and often decked in several layers? Ugh! I’m not blaming the women…they can express themselves as they choose…I just think the industry kind of expects it of them (you want to get signed? You aren’t the “total package”. You want a big promo budget? Sex it up. You want to appear on the VMA’s? How much skin are you prepared to show? Oh, you are a guy? Forget all that – just show us your talent and wear a nice suit).
Now 47 is in 7th and, rarely for the series, does not feature any reality singing contestants. It does feature reality singing show judges Mariah and Demi, though. Now 46 is still hanging around in 47th and it does feature Olly Murs and One Direction.. A$AP Ferg is 8th, Diseny’s “Teen Beach” is 9th and Jay Z closes out the top 10.
Phil Phillips represents the reality singing show genre with his “World from the Side of the Moon” at 46th (his “Gone, Gone, Gone” tops the AC charts this morning).
