HDD – Album Sales Prediction : May 23-29

Yesterday was the Memorial Day Stat Holiday, so HDD did not issue any sales reports. I expect they will have one today since the news is so big. Billlboard is predicting that Gaga will move 1.15 units this week which is the biggest opening since ‘NSYNC moved 1.88M units back in 2001. Those numbers have been juiced by Amazon selling the album for 99cents for two days last week, a Monday opening and a performance on Idol ;-)

The 99cent sale has not been without controversy. Many feel that such bargain basement sales should not be counted alongside full price album sales. The Editor of Billboard has been besieged by angry Britney fans who do not want to see her record fall (best debut by a female artist) and are still smarting from a last minute chart change that prevented her “Blackout” album from completing her chain of number 1 debuting albums. The Editor released a column explaining his logic and pointing out that Amazon is paying the full wholesale rate for the album and is taking the loss on the sales.

Here are some staggering statistics from her first day of sales:
Total: 500K
Amazon: 300K (110K on Thursday)
iTunes: 104K (200K for week)
Best Buy: 45K (200K for week)
Target: 35K (150K for week)
Starbucks: 10K
Wal-mart: (125K for week)

Billboard has already been announced that Gaga sold 215K albums in the UK last week which was more than the rest of the top 10 sold combined.

For now, here are the numbers HDD was predicting on Friday:
*Lady Gaga (Interscope) 1m+
*Brad Paisley (Arista Nashville) 145-155k
Adele (XL/Columbia) 125-135k
*Glee Cast Vol. 6 (Columbia) 75-80k
Now 38 (Capitol/EMI) 45-50k
*Maybach Music Group Presents: Self Made, Vol. 1 (Maybach/WB) 45-50k
*NKOTBSB (Columbia/Jive/Legacy) 35-40k
