With 46.22% of reports in, Michael Buble is set to have his fourth number one album. His last album, Christmas, was the best selling album of 2011. He should also sell well in the coming weeks with Mothers Day on the horizon. Does anybody else remember Michael Buble being introduced on American Idol way back in one of the early seasons? Paul Anka was the mentor and he talked about his project with David Foster to make this standards singing dude from Canada a star. I thought his chances were slim to none. Shows you why I do not have a job in A&R. Dude has released 6 platinum+ albums in the states.
Speaking of Paul Anka, remember how he used to do those songs-about-the-season to the melody of `My Way`? He rhymed Fantasia with euthanasia (as in that is what Simon wanted to do to untalented singers). Fantasia is often called a flop around these parts, but that is by those who do not turn to the Urban dials on their radios very often. Fantasia has a loyal fan base and is set to have the number two album of the week with sales of 85-95K which many an Idol would envy 9 years after winning Idol. This will be her third top 10 album and her second number 2 album.
Justin Timberlake continues to lurk in the top 5 at 3rd, Phoenix debuts in 4th, Fall Out Boy slides to 5th (after being number one last week) and Kid Cudi follows along to 6th. Will.I.Am can mentor on Idol (and every other singing show that will have him) as much as he likes, but he`s debuting way down in 7th and expected to move further down the chart. The final tally is estimated to be a dismal 20-30K range considering the big hit he had with X-Factor judge Britney. Rounding out the top 10 are thrifty Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Rob Zombie (wiki tells me he does various types of metal and a new genre for me, horror punk – who knew?) and P!nk (whose latest hit song will be sung this week on Idol).
Phil Phillips is at 31 currently on on the HDD building chart. Olly Murs from the UK X-Factor is 35th. Tate Stevens, who won the second season of the US franchise of X-Factor is debuting at 38th (once again showing that Idol is the only show which really gives artists a chance at success – still, 38th is infinitely better than debuting at 134th or not yet releasing an album which is what some other singing shows have to show for their 3 winners, so I guess I should cut the US X-Factor some slack. But not too much since Melanie has yet to release an album either).
The two most successful winners of reality singing shows, Kelly and Carrie are right next to each other this week – 40th and 41st. Finally, Now 45 features One Direction, Kelly and Phil and is currently at 43rd.
