Grammy Submissions-2013

The road to the Grammys is long and winding. That is why we sometimes have albums/songs winning that make us go “Yeah…I think I remember that one”.

The eligibility period for the Grammys are from Oct 1, 2011 to Sept 30 2012. There are many cryptic rules that leave Grammy watchers scratching their heads (apparently, Goyte’s “Somebody I Used to Know” is not eligible for Song of the Year because it contains a sample but it is good to go for Record of the Year. The Best New Artist rules are particularly byzantine). To even have a chance at a Grammy, your label must submit you or your music in appropriate categories.

Then, a panel of experts (rumour has it, 150 of them) inspect the nominations and make sure that they are eligible. The resulting list is then circulated to members of the NARSA (who are on the hook for finding a way to listen to your music on their own. I recommend Youtube). They members may then vote in up to 20 categories and the 4 general ones (Album, Song, Record and Best New Artist). In some categories, a panel of experts will determine the final list of nominees.

Once the nominees are selected and announced (Dec 5th) the voting for the winners begin. Again, the NARSA members can only vote in 20 categories which they are supposed to know something about and the 4 general categories. The Awards are handed out Feb 10, 2013.

We are now in the post-submission, nominee voting stage and the list of submissions are starting to leak (usually, we get entire PDFs of the submissions). This gives us an idea of who the label is supporting and what strategy they are using (they may not nominate all singles an artist has released because they don’t want to split the vote).

Right now, we are seeing lists for particular artists leaking out. I cannot vouch for their veracity since anybody can be an insider on the internet. They seem reasonable, though, so I thought I would start the annual Grammy Submissions post with reality show related ones. That way we can start debating who should be nominated and which record labels are run by idiots. Please post nominations as you find them, especially those PDFs!

These are from Pulse and The Golden Derby forums. Please note that these are not full lists and if somebody is not listed, does not mean they have not been submitted.
