In this behind the scenes peek at Tuesday’s Glee, Darren Criss excitedly reveals that singing with guest star, Shirley MacLaine, will likely be the most exciting thing he does on the series. In “The Backup Plan” the two duet on Piece of My Heart, by Janis Joplin. Shirley had never heard the song before (!!!) but thinks the music team did a good job of putting their performances together.
Shirley cheekily admits that not only does she think Darren is a very talented boy, but she would “still be interested” too. Her cougar joke MAY be a foreshadowing of a plot twist to come. The character Shirley is playing, June Dollaway, is a rich socialite and a huge contributor to NYADA.
Kurt (Chris Colfer) has been invited to perform for her at a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new dance studio in her name. When Kurt invites Blaine (Darren) to join him in a duet of “Story of my Life,” it’s Blaine the dowager notices. She can help make him a star, but there are strings attached that could threaten Blaine’s relationship with his fiance. Is June expecting Blaine to downplay the gay? Or maybe she expects him to be her boy toy? Hm. We’ll find out in the finale, titled The Rachel Berry Project, airing in two weeks!
There are other guest stars in this episode. Jim Rash (Community) plays the FOX Executive who invites Rachel (Lea Michele) to audition for a TV pilot. And Eric Roberts (Julia’s brother) makes an appearance!) For spoilers and full songs for “The Backup Plan”, click below:
