Thoughts on “I Am Unicorn”

  • Glee is back. Yes it is. Amazing what hiring a room full of writers will do. The character driven stories are BACK. And it looks like none of the main characters are going to be left behind this year. I am so happy right now.
  • Has the Glee universe made up a name for Kurt/Brittany yet? If they haven’t, they need to…stat.  Could these two cuddle bugs be any cuter? I don’t think so!
  • Heather Morris plays Brittany with this wonderful mixture of naivete and seemingly accidental wisdom.  She sees the thing in Kurt that makes him so wonderful, even as she devises the Gayest Political Campaign on The Planet for him.  Most awesome moment:  Brittany calling her student “swag bag” for Kurt “Kurt Hummel’s bulging pink fun sack”
  • Kurt may be The Unicorn, but he’s still not ready to embrace it as he continues to struggle with self-identity. Now that he’s beginning to think about life beyond Lima, he’s wondering if he should dial back the gay in order to meet the goals he’s set for himself.
  • ….and thank god Burt Hummel enters the picture to tell Kurt he’s perfect the way he is.  If you don’t fit a traditional male lead, Burt tells Kurt…You’re awesome! Write your own part. Does that sound familiar? Chris Colfer filmed a movie this summer from a screenplay that he wrote. Just another example of Ryan Murphy incorporating elements of his actors lives into the characters they play.  By the end of the season, Kurt may be starring in a production that he wrote. Maybe a Broadway musical with the gender roles reversed? (Yes, Chris did exactly that in high school. Shirley Todd anyone?).
  • But back to Kurt’s suddenly wanting to be able to  “pass” as straight.  I’ve never seen this aspect of gay life addressed on TV before, and it’s a juicy, and thought provoking subject. Ironically, the role that Kurt wants,   but is deemed to feminine for–the lead in West Side Story–will probably go to Blaine, who is also gay. But, you know, “straight acting” gay–or “Rock Hudson” gay, as Burt defines it.  The exploration of straight vs gay, and straight gay vs feminine gay identity are intriguing themes. I’m interested to see how far the show takes it.
  • Darren Criss’s performance of “Something’s Coming” was mesmerizing.  Kurt watching Blaine from the wings broke my heart a little bit.  I’m hoping the cliffhanger has Kurt racing down to the auditorium–realizing how selfish he’s been– to tell Blaine to read for the role. Blaine is the sweetest boyfriend in the world.  He decides to hide HIS light under a bushel so Kurt isn’t hurt.
  • Will to Kurt in Booty Camp: “Kurt! Jazz Hands!” Ha.
  • Kurt. Barbara Streisand. Scaffolding. Ninja Swords. Holy Sh*t.  Loved it. Who says Kurt isn’t funny?
  • I always feel an overwhelming sense of second hand embarrassment when Kurt tries to butch it up. See: “Little Pink Houses.”  Still, I felt awful when his attempts to play hetero as Romeo had everyone in the room in a fit of giggles.
  • I have mixed feelings about the return of Shelby to Lima. The pretext for her return is stupid. She’s directing a rival Glee club because Sugar’s daddy paid for it? *eyes roll*. But one of last year’s glaring omissions was they way Puck and Quinn’s baby storyline was treated like it never happened.  When Will dressed Quinn down, I was so glad he mentioned that she lived with Mercedes at the end of her pregnancy–something you’d never know by the way the writers had them interact last year.  Of course, I’m hoping Quinn comes to terms with what’s best for her baby and decides to co-parent with Shelby and Puck.  Quinn’s character is finally picking up where she was left off at the end of Season 1. Hallelujah.
  • Also looking forward to the Rachel-Shelby interaction. Their performance of “Somewhere” in tonight’s episode was nothing short of stunning.  Shelby can be a mother to Rachel. And maybe Rachel can help Quinn realize that sometimes adoptive parents can be the best parents. There’s a cool little circle of relationships going on there.
  • Puck and Quinn aren’t back together yet, but I hope that’s where the writers are headed.  In Season 1, Puck was a screw up who wanted to do better.  That thread was almost complete abandoned in  Season 2, it’s nice to get it back.
  • Clown pig! Puck and Beth. He’s going to be a good father.
  • Why are the girls always surprised to find Puck in the girls bathroom? He has some of his best conversations in the ladies room.
  • Sweet moment: Santana convinces Brittany that she is also the Unicorn. And that despite believing that our president is Will.i.am, she should run for president herself.  And she does.  Unfortunately, Kurt changes his mind about her ultra-gay political campaign for him a little too late.  Hopefully, they will see that the Force of the Unicorn is even stronger when combined. They should run as co-mates on a double rainbow platform!
  • Corey Monteith is one of the best actors on Glee and is criminally under-served and underrated.  He hasn’t figured much in these first two episodes, but he’s being set up for a very relatable storyline.  Will Finn follow Rachel to New York, or become Burt’s protege at the tire store? Corey has managed to elevate Finn’s character into something more than just the one-dimensional jock character it’s often written as. I can’t wait to see him get material he can really sink his teeth into.
  • Sue Sylvester lulz:  “Hello She-Hulk, Weepie the Vest Clown and Little Miss Golden Marmoset. And seriously, it’s your spitting image. I’m going to send you a photo. Are you still at “freakish bony ginger” at Gmail? “
