Ahead of next week’s network TV upfront presentations in New York City, a slew of series, including shows from ABC, CBS, FOX and CW were cancelled on Thursday (5/12) afternoon.
FOX axed its entire freshman comedy slate. Nashville seemed to be gearing up for a renewal, hiring new showrunners Marshall Herskovitz and Ed Zwick, but a fifth season wasn’t meant to be. It appeared that ABC planned to renew Castle when they announced Stana Katic, would be exiting the show, leaving Nate Fillion as the sole lead. The network decided to cancel instead. The Muppets looked like the breakout comedy of the season when it premiered last fall. But it turned out furry friends playing out adult storylines wasn’t a thing viewers wanted. CSI Cyber, the last of the CSI franchise ended after two seasons. May it rest in peace. And how did the abysmally rated ABC musical comedy Galavant even GET a second season? It has finally gotten the axe.
In an unusual move, Supergirl, starring Glee star Melissa Benoist is renewed for a second season. However, due to declining ratings over the course of its first season, CBS is moving the series to the CW where the ratings expectations are much lower. The series premiered with a 3.1 rating 13 million viewers, but fell to a 1.6 and 6 million viewers by the time the finale rolled around.
