  1. wasn’t Elliott the one that was saying he only had insulin for a couple days?

  2. That was my reaction too. I thought Elliot tweeted about both his limited insulin and a request to all media for transportation on their planes because of it. Did I dream that? I don’t think so. :-)

  3. It’s true. But a lot of the media was late in reporting Elliotts situation so that issues that had been resolved were still being reported as problems.

  4. Yeah, I think he’s talking about the flood of subsequent media stories that didn’t check to see whether anything had changed but just picked up the earlier reporting and said exactly the same thing several days later, after his insulin situation got fixed. That’s just the media world we live in today, though. Gazillions of stories on every possible topic that aren’t actually reported but just repeated around the world. Many things are no longer very timely when they’re picked up by a small paper or web site nearly a week after they happened.

  5. I think Elliot later reported that the US Embassy was able to get him more insulin and extend his supply temporarily. As long as he is safe and healthy that’s the really important thing right now.

  6. I’m positive he had said in interviews and tweeted that he only had enough insulin to last until last Sunday. In this interview he said he had packed plenty and wasn’t in danger of running out. In fact has more than enough for 6 more days.

I’m thinking Elliot had a little diva moment going on. Don’t blame the press for exagerating the words that came from your mouth.

Glad he’s well and safe and on his way home.

  7. wasn’t Elliott the one that was saying he only had insulin for a couple days?

Immediately after the quake, yes. And that was the case. He did get a hold of the embassy and they helped him out. Apparently it was issues with supplies for the pump that was the concern.

  8. ’m positive he had said in interviews and tweeted that he only had enough insulin to last until last Sunday.

    Not exactly.

This is what he said in one of the early interviews (on Fox), and I think it’s pretty similar to what he said in the others: “I only packed enough insulin supplies for my pump to last a couple more days, so I’m starting to worry.”

There’s a whole lot of equipment that goes into having an insulin-pump system — stuff involved in the insertion of the tube into your body, stuff to help ensure the opening doesn’t get infected, stuff to keep the insulin cool, stuff to test your blood sugar, etc. — and since few of us know anything about that, his kind of panicky, shorthand talking got most people thinking it was insulin he lacked.

But when you’re on a pump, the supplies are pretty much as important as the insulin — If you don’t have the supplies, you have to go somewhere and get your insulin another way. And that involves a whole bunch of medical procedures. So there really was a potential problem if he couldn’t get supplies, and getting them can be dicey in different parts of the world because different countries may have supplies from different manufacturers that you can’t use, etc.

I think Twitter kind of bit Elliott in the butt, as it does so many. When he started frantically tweeting stuff, he was right in the middle of the quake, which scared the heck out of him partly because he *hadn’t* packed all that much stuff, and he was also thinking that he was tweeting just to family, friends, and fans. So he expressed his emotional reactions to the situation. Like many, I doubt that it hit him as he was tweeting that tweets are searchable by everybody and that news media would be scanning those tweets in search of people to interview on the ground in the quake zone.

Consider that he had just gone through an 8.8 earthquake and could die from diabetic shock easily, I’m cutting him a lot of slack on this and say that communications got crossed for a while. I won’t pull the diva card on Elliott.

  10. He’s home! His latest tweet:

Ur boy is home safe and sound!!…I kissed the ground I walk on!!!!
