Ellen Degeneres on the Oprah Winfrey Show – VIDEO

The fruits of Ellen Degeneres’ humorous campaign to be on the cover of Oprah Winfrey’s O Magazine have paid off!   Ellen and Oprah will grace the cover of the December issue.

Exclusive: Konversations with Keeme: A Chat with Kelly Jean Grant

To celebrate, Ellen appeared on Oprah’s afternoon talk show to talk about her life and remarkable career.

They talked about Idol–Ellen says the offer to be the new judge was a complete surprise–she did not lobby for it.

Ellen plans to bring the home viewer aspect to the panel, and realizes now that she’s picky–she’ll be harder on the contestants than she initially thought.   And as far as standing up to Simon is concerned? No problem!

She’ll be funny when the opportunity presents itself.   For instance, last season, she would have teased Adam Lambert about showing too much tongue while singing his signature high notes.   (Actually, I think using the contestants as comedy material could get her in trouble with fans, but she’ll figure that out soon enough. Heh.)

Ellen’s wife, Portia de Rossi joined them for the second part of the interview to talk about their life as a married couple.

  1. If the best Ellen can offer is that Adam used his tongue too much (which, BTW, Rickey Minor explained–it’s the way he was trained to get his vocal range), which are in deep trouble.

  2. Yes using the contestants as comic material will definitely backfire. Especially in the technical singing department like the use of the controversial flat tongue technique used for a specific sound. And an item for dicussion among voice teachers not comedians. Adam rarely uses it except for a desired audio result. FURTHER, her uninformed pov can be damaging to a contestant while she’s busy going for the joke. I won’t be watching S9.

  3. Actually, I think using the contestants as comedy material could get her in trouble with fans, but she’ll figure that out soon enough. Heh.)

    Yep.

  4. I saw this one a couple of days ago, and it is one of the cutest, sweetest interview I’ve ever seen. It’s truly inspiring, at least for me. Ellen and Portia are my favorite celebrity couple without a doubt.

It’s funny that the overused phrase “it is not that deep” or whatever gets overused, except when it involves Adam negatively. I don’t really think that the fact that it’s a singing technique makes a difference, I know it is and I found the joke funny, unexpected and even Oprah couldn’t help laughing in a very honest way when Ellen said it.

Simon says worst things about the contestants without even trying to be funny, I guess I’ll wait to see how Ellen judges before judging her.

They are absolutely friggin’ adorable. Luv Ellen, She’ll figure it out.

  6. I guess I’ll wait to see how Ellen judges before judging her, too. I’ll give her two weeks, but I have a feeling lots of people will be mssing Paula.

  7. any details about this campaign? was that like her campaign to bring george clooney?

  8. If she tries to make jokes like she did on SYTYCD, than that will be painful and stupid. I really didn’t like that, it was labored and worst of all, not funny. But it seems like she will probably do some of the same thing on AI. Well hopefully as mj says, she’ll stop that sooner than later.

Oh and I don’t mind her razzing Adam about the tongue thing. Sure it’s a vocal technique, but Adam doesn’t mind people razzing him about the tongue thing and laughes about it himself. So he doesn’t care.

  9. LOL, I watched it on Friday and thought she was hilarious. Of course, the fact that she started her proposed comment to Adam with “You were fantastic” and ended with the tongue stuff (funny!) may have had something to with it.

  10. I don’t even want to watch Idol with Ellen as a judge. With so many music experts out there they choose a comedienne?

  11. Ellen is on TV everyday. I think she’s a little more savvy then she’s getting credit for. She’ll be able to poke fun and have fun but remain professional. I am really excited to have her on as a judge. I think it will be fun to have a voice similar to yours and mine on the show.

  12. Well, I saw a bunch of crap about Adam’s tongue during the season so she is honestly being a fan. I have no problem with that. If she does it too often, however, and God forbid to the wrong person, it may come back to bite her. She obviously loves Adam. I actually have problems with that tongue too, and I’m unsure what other trained vocalists do the same. I’m sure you’ll school me on that, and I welcome it.

I’m fairly excited to see her as a judge. I just wish they’d have gotten rid of Kara and kept Paula, if only for the amusement factor. I typically don’t even listen to the judges’ verdicts until after I vote but Paula gave some hilarious soundbites.

  13. Hmmm, I love, love love Ellen. I hate, hate, hate the idea that she is gonna be on Idol. Frankly I think it sorta takes away a little of her cool factor that if idol is as scripted like folk are saying it is, that she’s willing to be a puppet or a shill. Anywho, I have DVR so I can tape it, and fastforward what I don’t want to watch. I hope that I am wrong and that Ellen lifts the show. I somehow think it weird that she will be judging them, and then having them on her show after they are booted. That might create some great moments for her teevee show though…..hmmmm.

  14. Can someone tell me when the “Dennis Quaid wants a coffee” thing happened? That’s awesome. hee

I’m reserving judgment on Ellen as a judge. I don’t think it’s right, but I can’t judge her as a judge until I see it. I just keep thinking that Quentin Tarrantino is one of the best guest judges – and mentors – they ever had, and he’s not in the music business. On the other hand, he is a serious music fan, so…

  15. Portia de Rossi is one very beautiful woman and I love Ellen cuz she is from my hometown. Don’t know yet how I feel about her as an AI judge.

  16. Damnit..I watched it on Monday, not Friday. Had yesterday off due to Veterans day and now I keep thinking today is Monday. Yikes! I think Ellen will be fine. I just don’t want to see too much Ellen/Simon fighting and I’ll be happy.

  17. After watching Ellen and Portia’s wedding video it’s my sincere hope that Adam gets to know that same joy some day.

  18. Ellen – that right there abt Adam’s tongue is why AI fans are going to either hate or love her. be yourself but remember it’s mostly abt the singing.

  19. My guess is that it wasn’t Ellen’s humor on SYTYCD but the way she supported Evan (the broadway dancer) when the other judges were trying to throw him under the bus. She really made him feel better, and she really represented Evan’s fans & why they like him, and she even got the rest of the audience cheering for him. Though I really wanted Evan gone, it was a really touching moment, and Ellen’s touch there was truly honest, heartfelt, unique, supportive, and tenderly persuasive.

While Paula often made the contestants feel supported by Paula, I think Ellen’s gift is that she can make the thrown-under-the-bus contestant feel rooted-for by the audience too.

    Let’s see what she brings…

  20. Love Ellen to pieces, love her talkshow too. Hated her as a guest judge on SYTYCD. She added absolutely nothing to the panel and it was a pointless, gratuitous cameo. I have a strong feeling I’ll hate her as a permanent judge on AI. IMO, one of the biggest things this show has always lacked is a judge who can actually give an informed critique of a contestant’s vocal and musical abilities. This is going to be a train wreck.

  21. If the best Ellen can offer is that Adam used his tongue too much (which, BTW, Rickey Minor explained’“it’s the way he was trained to get his vocal range), which are in deep trouble.

She was making a joke. Ellen is a very intelligent and knowledgeable woman and I do believe she is going to contribute a great deal to the Idol judges panel. She will give perspective as a fan, a knowledgeable fan who has been in show business for many years. I think she’ll be much better than Kara.

Ellen and Portia are wonderful together! I wish them much happiness.

  22. She will give perspective as a fan, a knowledgeable fan who has been in show business for many years.

I agree wholeheartedly. I think that her years performing for people on stage and working her way up the ranks into huge stardom is being overlooked. She will have a lot to offer in the way of presentation, really showcasing personality and honing confidence. I think the contestants will be both inspired by and relaxed by her presence and wise words. Part of her shtick is her awkward jokes and filler…but I think that this being a permanent gig…not a last minute appearance…is going to make a difference. We shall see! I’m going to remain positive until I just can’t anymore…ahem…Kara…

  23. I don’t watch Ellen show or SYTYCD, so I don’t really know what kind of person she is. But from the video clip she seemed to be nice and funny. She did say that she likes Adam Lambert and that he was fantastic. The mention of the tongue I am sure just her trying to be funny. I am sure Adam being a gracious person he is, doesn’t mind it a bit. He would probably be laughing along. As far as watching her as a judge, we’ll see how it goes.

  24. IMO, one of the biggest things this show has always lacked is a judge who can actually give an informed critique of a contestant’s vocal and musical abilities.

I sometimes wonder if that’s purposeful on the part of the show, but I really do wish they did have a panel member who really could do that. Perhaps the show thinks someone who could would be deemed too “boring”. But there just doesn’t seem to be an interest in that, from the way they’ve been selecting judges, and I wish I knew why. I have to assume they realize that no member of that panel is giving a strongly informed musical critique… right?

  25. After watching Ellen and Portia’s wedding video it’s my sincere hope that Adam gets to know that same joy some day.

ugh. Why do Adam fans have to make every post on this site somehow about Adam? it’s starting to get on my nerves.

    end rant now.

  26. ugh. Why do Adam fans have to make every post on this site somehow about Adam? it’s starting to get on my nerves.

It’s pretty relevant since he’s a GAY person and they were talking about GAY rights to get married… and Ellen brought up ADAM in her interview… besides that it was an observation… said by one person, me…your “rant” drew more attention to it than my lone comment did since you’re the only one who responded.

Why not say Clay Aiken or Nathaniel Marshal? There relevant to the topic. did you post on Justin’s wedding post hoping all the straight idols could get married and know that joy? since that’s pretty relevant since it was a STRAIGHT wedding and most idols are STRAIGHT. oh and yeah she brought him up for like 20 seconds and a good amount comments are making it all about him, and it’s not just on this post it’s pretty much every post. This post wasn’t actually that bad but that comment was the breaking point cause that was the example of Adam fans grasping at straws to talk about him and think it’s all about him IMO.

oh and that’s just and observation by one person … me

  28. The position of tongue for notes is significant, and Adam know what he is doing, so I hope Ellen is careful in what she says, cuz !. I am a mother hen when it comes to contestants but 2. I want Ellen to do well and make it useful but fun for the contestants

  29. Ellen and Portia are great together more real then when she was with Anne Heche. Portia seems beautiful in and out. I wish Adam this kind of happiness and hopefully when he finds his soul mate he will be able to marry and have it recognized.

The position of tongue for notes is significant

I could make some really dirty comments about this, but I’ll be a lady…for once ;)

    ETA:

Why not say Clay Aiken or Nathaniel Marshal? There relevant to the topic.

And so if Clay was mentioned you would not be ranting? That makes no sense.

  30. Ellen using musical critiques…….MMMM….Not so much.!!!
I mean,REALLY, no one uses strictly musical references. But all of them are very familiar with music in some way Certainly Randy, Kara and Simon are directly involved with the Music biz. Ellen like many fans, loves Music ,and, She listens to ,and chooses, music and singers on a constant, ongoing basis. She is well credentialed in her interest in new and upcoming artists. She, like many fans, can assess uniqueness, tone ,pitch, and if any given person can carry a tune, as well ,as what is relevant, and who is, or is not, charismatic. I hear mini critiques almost everytime I log in here……I’m talking about most of you, Yeah!!!!
I believe this will be a learning curve for Ellen. thank goodness she is a
    pretty quick study!!!
Well I know who Adam is ” That Fierce Alien with an incredible tongue!!!
He uses it to pleasure our ears, brains, and HEARTS.
So who are Clay Justin or Nathaniel and Why should I care about them
    in connection to Ellen?????!!!!!!

  31. Speaking of Ellen (and I am sooooo excited, cant stand it) but – I get the Ellen tickets this year from our station and guess what taping I get to go to!!! THE ONE THAT ADAM LAMBERT WILL BE TAPING WITH HER, CAN YA SAY EXCITED, CAN YA?? ok – thats all – carry on

  32. Well MJ was the one who blogged with opening with the Adam comment and the joke about the tongue. There was no rant. The comment MJ made about it backfiring invited comment. And if you google tongue damaging vocal techniques you can read all about it. It’s a PROFESSIONAL TOPIC. They are taught not to use it but some still will when they feel it adds to or “need to” in certain performances.

If the “judge” had any vocal training at all, she’d have known. It’s way different than her sticking up for Ethan because Nigel really mocked his face — it’s natural properties, NOT his expressions but his actual face. I gave her huge props for her rant about that on SYTYCD but overall I did not enjoy what she brought to the show at all.

Some people are actually interested in technical things on these shows not just who is “cutest” or a “trainwreck”. Adam was asked about the tongue and his reply was “yeah it comes out every now and then”. A vocal teacher would read that as him acknowledging obtusely that he’s using it occasionally which can be criticized. The Masterclass Lady person reviews all of their techniques every week so it’s not about just fangirling. Well, unless you’re discussing Idols with absolutely NO technique or training which is 90% of them. in which case, for me reading her critiques is fun to see if my opinion bears any semblance of legitimacy.

  33. Did Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Eddie Vedder etc. have a vast technical background? Or do they just rock? There’s something to be said about judging entertainment value and recognizing when an artist transcends technicality into something unique and commercially viable/appealing. I could really care less how Adam uses his tongue on stage. In fact…I’d like to stay in the dark about that kind of stuff. It kinda zaps the fun out of it for me. I use my ears to tell me what sounds good. That’ll do.

  34. Speaking of Ellen (and I am sooooo excited, cant stand it) but ‘“ I get the Ellen tickets this year from our station and guess what taping I get to go to!!! THE ONE THAT ADAM LAMBERT WILL BE TAPING WITH HER, CAN YA SAY EXCITED, CAN YA?? ok ‘“ thats all ‘“ carry on

    …and when might this be?

  35. I became bored with American Idol, skipped some seasons, never finished others, loved a couple and voted 4 straight hours for Adam Lambert -he was the only reason I tuned in each week. I also like Ellen’s show, know she likes hip hop, which I do not, and I know the position of the tongue is significant for certain songs. If a judge condemened Adam for his tongue, Adam may have corrected that judge- and that would turn off some people, and if not correcting that judge-being rediculed would have gone against the contestant too. Don’t hurt ‘my adam,’ babe, grrrr. But, yeah, Ellen will livin up the show and make it fun. Smart move, AI.

  36. The same thing should have been told to Kris about his side mouth singing and jaw and neck tension. Except fangirls think it’s so cute. It is far from it. It’s a very bad habit which he stipulates to. And if you watch the new video and his Napa performances, to his credit he’s almost beaten the side mouth deal. The tension, no, and it’s holding him back from a good sound. But hey, whatever floats your boat. Sometimes you need to flatten your tongue to invoke a “Danny” type thicker sound. Or if you need to relax your vocal chords. Or change the pathway of air back there. It’s also an exercise. But NEVER EVER does one need a side mouth or tense jaw and neck. And Dylan would have never won AI, that is a true statement.

The side mouth thing of Kris’ was way more distracting/icky than Adams tongue, imho.
