Eh? Lame Utterances from the Judges – They Actually Said That?

It happens every season. Heck, it happens every show. For some judges, it happens almost every time they get a chance to speak. Inevitably, every judge will say something outright stupid, if not moronic. What are your favourite idiocy from the judges?

I must say, for me, there are a lot of candidates for “Most Ludicrous Comment Ever” from the judges. I toyed with Paula’s rambling about butterflies. Then there was the time that I nearly ground my teeth to a pulp after Randy said “Just 17!” for the 1,700th time. JLo criticizing Jessica for having “heard that before” (when she was forced to reprise a song) while praising P^2 for being unique every week struck me as being quite bizarre. And who can forget the judges collectively saying that singing out of tune doesn’t matter in S9 after years of telling us Idol was a singing competition?

But for me, the whopper of a critique that always sticks with me is one from Simon. In Season 7, I wasn’t a fan of Carly Smithson, but even I had to register my indignation when Simon commented on her performance of “Blackbird”. “Ah, so, Beatles Song, Week 2 and you choose a song about a Blackbird. I don’t think that was very smart thing to do”. Ugh! I know he was just trying to undermine her, but Simon should have been clever enough to pick on something that didn’t make him seem like an uneducated dolt who wouldn’t know a metaphor if it came up and slapped him the face. Of course, by the end of the season, he had registered several complaints about birds leading some to believe that he’d been traumatized by avians as a small child. He must have been downright terrified by the time Megan “cawed” in his face during her sing-out in Season 8.
