    #Joey is here!

  4. I am so excited to hear Dave & the boys on cellcast tonight! Woo to the Hoo!

  5. David Cook singing Billy Jean was used by the Silver Medalist skaters in tonights Olympic free skate. It was a beautiful skate and of course David sounded good. Didn’t catch whether they said his name @ the beginning. The annoucers remarked that the skaters knew everything to include in their number and included the music.

  6. Didn’t catch whether they said his name @ the beginning.

I didn’t hear them say it – but man did he sound good wailing on those sustained high notes on my TV :) !!

  7. Just saw that David Cook got up to 100,000 followers on Twitter TODAY. cool

  8. #carly smithson is here with the boys

Sweet! It was so fun to follow the girls’ tweets when the S7 cast went to DC’s LA show. Maybe she’ll tweet some fun stuff this time… fingers crossed :)!

  9. David and the band acting silly backstage, but they’re all dressed-up and looking mighty fine:

    Hello from Moronogo Casino

Wow – I like that spikey hair on Cookie. I keep saying that he’s gotta embrace the forehead! I come from a family of rather large foreheads. After my brother had unfortunately water buffalo-esque weird wing bangs for a bit, he too learned to let that forehead shine on ;)

They are all so cute. I still find Monty squishable. Waaaah, I miss them! I want my Norfolk show, dammit!

  10. Anyone listening to the cellcast? If so, how is it? I don’t know if I really have time to listen but if it is decent… I might tune in for a minute.

  11. ^^ LMAO. Water buffalo.

Spikey hair is win!!!! He looks the best with it.

  12. Spikey hair is win!!!! He looks the best with it.

He really does look so great with the bangs off his forehead. He is looking really, really good. Race for Hope is only a couple months away…

  13. Waaaaaaaah. Why am I not there? 3 hours from home and I let rational me talk me out of
making the trip after hosting 20 first graders for my 7 year olds birthday party. Damn you rational me. Morongo and a bottle of vodka and some cookie is exactly what I need right now

  14. Morongo and a bottle of vodka and some cookie is exactly what I need right now

LOL, well, as long as you didn’t have to host 20 first graders *after* the show… (I have a first grader, too. Noisy little critters!)

  15. OMG – That twitvid from David is fantastic. How I love those boys

  16. Hmm, tuning in, at least I can hear his voice. But yeah, guitars are kinda like… sonar?

  17. Someone there spotted him earlier and tweeted saying he looked like sex LMAO um he totally does. Lordy.

  18. I can hear pretty well right now… “Heroes…” Oh, man, I remember my first show… he started out with “The World I Know” and it was all purty and then when they launched into “Heroes” the place went NUTS. I might have even been yelling WOOOOOOOOO! I don’t know what it is about this song… love it.

  19. “Heroes” on cellcast! I loved singing along to that song at concerts. saw it as background on an NBC sports commercial

  20. Hey DC & The Anthemic are looking good. And they sound really good too.

  21. Someone there spotted him earlier and tweeted saying he looked like sex

He looks *really* fricking hot. If he looked like that when I walked into that restaurant and there he was… I wouldn’t have lost my power of speech, I would have probably swooned. Hee!

  22. I love the screencap MJ has up there… Neal looks like he’s about to do something very naughty. And Mr. Cook is looking very trim!

  23. Gawd. Why couldn’t he have done his hair like that on EM:HE. Imagine the boost in sales that would have been. LOL

  24. ^^^^
No kidding! And then he could’ve gone to the “This Is It” premiere with said hair and… yum.

Oh, man, I just said yum.

  25. Thanks for posting that pre-show twitvid. I replayed that thing several times. Always love Cookie dressed up like the star that he is. The hair, very nice. David Cook, classy indeed.

p.s. Saw the Billie Jean skate, he did sound so good. So many of his AI songs really showcased his vocal talent.

  26. Aw, I can’t really understand the banter… and I love me some banter.

  27. No kidding! And then he could’ve gone to the “This Is It” premiere with said hair and… yum.

Oh, man, I just said yum.

    YES. People would have died.

Aw, I can’t really understand the banter… and I love me some banter.

I’m doing the banter transcript for DCO. So I’ll post that here in a couple days if I remember.

  28. Loving this ustream! Hotel California mash up with KoTN

    “Lie” sound is beautiful.

  29. Wow, the sound is REALLY good on the ustream – has it been like that the whole time?

Sigh, “Lie.” Oh, how I love this song. Sitting third row when he did the a cappella part… well, if I didn’t love him already that would’ve done it.

  30. I always love the banter – sorry can’t hear on cellcast. Hope someone gets on youtube. will look for your post, seriously.

My God, his voice on “Lie”!

  31. I haven’t seen him this hot since… oh wait. I haven’t. I wish I was there. Sooo bad.

  32. I haven’t seen him this hot since… oh wait. I haven’t. I wish I was there. Sooo bad.

Haha, I know, I am having much envy of the folks there. He’s amazing live. I have never in my life gone to see a band more than once… five times for Cookie and I want to know when his next tour starts, hee.

  33. Oh, that twitvid is awesome! Now that he’s lost his twitvid virginity, hopefully he’ll to do these more. The boys look are all too cute. They clearly like to jerk DC’s chain when you look at their faces as DC is talking. Did y’all see Neal mouthing every word out of DC’s mouth? How did he do that? And Monty cracking up. And they all dressed up! Vests all around, except for Monty in a button down. Too cute.

Oh, and I definitely approve of the hair. I wonder how it’ll hold up after 90 minutes of sweating though… I like when his hair is more casual and has less product, but this is WAY better than the stringy bangs or the flat hat-hair. I agree that I like seeing the forehead. Fine, so DC’s hairline is a little high for someone his age, but BFD, it actually isn’t that bad and looks fine with his face. He should stop trying to cover it up, cuz his thin bangs don’t do a good job covering it up and makes it look like he’s hiding major baldspots or something, which is simply not the case.

  34. LOVE the twitvid! The guys are looking great, and DC looks fantastic. Embrace the hairline, dude!

And, no, they never mentioned that DC was singing to Davis & White during the Olympics coverage. Scott Hamilton was blabbing through the beginning of the performance, but he finally stopped when I started SCREAMING at my television for him to SHUT THE HELL UP. ;-)

  35. I don’t think that David Cook has ever looked this hot (and he always looks hot to me). Oh yeah, he sounds like he is in great voice to night also. Wish I was there.

  36. but he finally stopped when I started SCREAMING at my television for him to SHUT THE HELL UP.

Thank you! I was getting so frustrated… and then my kids were yelling and hubby just gave me the exasperated eyebrow raise.

  37. “We haven’t even dug into the surprises yet”

Anybody have any theories as to the surprises? I’ll take a few guess.

    (1) He announces Neal is actually a stripper and is going to perform for us.

    (2) He announces a live CD. (I can dream)

    (3) He announces that he’s engaged to Mandy Moore. (He can dream)

    (4) He takes off his shirt and shows us a back tattoo.

    (5) He covers Jamie Foxx’s song “Blame It”

  38. Oh, I hope somebody gets some decent videos up soon. I can’t listen to those cellcasts. It’s like trying to hear him underwater while simultaneously being electrocuted.

  39. Fine, so DC’s hairline is a little high for someone his age, but BFD, it actually isn’t that bad and looks fine with his face.

Seriously, me and two of my brothers and my sister ALL have that big damn forehead. My brothers do have slightly receding hairlines but we just have big damn foreheads. Took us ’til adulthood to realize bangs didn’t help. So I just want David to learn from our pain… EMBRACE THE FOREHEAD.

What the hell is he talking about now? The man of the hour? Too sweet to be sour? Oh, ha, his brother. Andrew, lol.

  40. (4) He takes off his shirt and shows us a back tattoo.

ONLY if it says “Cook” in big black letters.

  41. It’s like trying to hear him underwater while simultaneously being electrocuted.

The ustream is actually pretty good, the only thing that is wonky is it gives him a lisp ;)

  42. The ustream is good, Bootstar – The pole dancer’s anthem – “Bar Ba Sol”

  43. Partial Lie twitvid: http://www.twitvid.com/B6FCF

Okay, I’m slightly disappointed- thought DC was about to debut a song but they’re just playing Make Believe right now… I’m hoping for a different song soon!

  44. If I was ever inclined to try to quit him, he could win me back by singing “Lie” anytime. ANYtime. Not like I can quit him. He’s my teevee boyfriend, after all.

  45. Is he introducing Carly???

Jesus, she’s awesome! (I wish that woman on the floor would stop screaming into the cellcast, though. She’s killing me.)

  46. Oh man, sounds like the rumors might be true about them soundchecking Barracuda. He’s bringing Carly onstage…!

    ETA. This is fucking kick-ass.

  47. Cookie’s hair reminds me of AI7 final 2 performance night, just with shorter spikes. Very hot! Guess Monty didn’t get the memo about the vests. lol

Listening to the cellcast and watching ustream seems to be working the best for me. And hoo to the ray for a cellcast! It’s been too long!

Also, I really like Make Believe and hope it makes the record.

  48. intro – Carly -Ladies and Gentlemen – Lead singer of the band We Are The Fallen

    “Barracuda”!!

  49. OMG – he just introduced Carly. Sounds like they may do a duet ….yes David & Carly on Barracuda!!!!

  50. Carly singing Barracuda! I need to know– is DC just playing or singing backup…?

  51. I remember they were supposed to do Barracuda on the AI tour but for some reason it didn’t work out. Too bad. Need video of this!

  52. I’m trying soooooooo hard not to scream. Barracuda? AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH. fail

  53. AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH. fail

    Hee!

I had to sorta watch my arms and make sure they didn’t flail.

Aaaargh, lucky peeps who are at this show!

  54. Random question: Why does David Cook have so many fans who can’t sing on key??? Yikes.

  55. That’s the Lady who can sing Heart.

Chat said David was tearing up the guitar. TPTB wouldn’t let them do this on the Idol Tour. Finally!

    Crowd loved it.

  56. Why does David Cook have so many fans who can’t sing on key???

    I know, it’s like an off-key chorus!

  57. Chat said David was tearing up the guitar.

Definitely need video then ’cause that’s *hawt*

  58. Wait. There’s a female voice singing back up to CBTM, and it’s not Carly? Weird.

  59. You mean worse than what he did to the guitar at the MWK show? Cuz he made that guitar his beeyotch!

  60. There’s a female voice singing back up to CBTM, and it’s not Carly?

There’s a whole army of them – singing loudly… In the audience :)

  61. Please tell me there are people there getting all this on video, right? And who’s the dude with the camera on stage? Is he from the casino?

  62. This happens every time with his shows – that hour just *flies* by.

I need longer Cookie sets, please.

Uh oh, the off-key chorus is singing Light On now :)

  63. Wait. There’s a female voice singing back up to CBTM, and it’s not Carly? Weird

It was an audience member. Some of us were chuckling about the audience vocals. She’s back on now for Light On. :)

  64. Lucky girl. Who among us wouldn’t be singing just as loudly if we were there?

  65. She’s back on now for Light On.

I like when the audience tries to hit the high notes with him. That never goes well ;)

  66. Dammit- this went as fast as it does when you’re actually there! Someone said it was The Anthemic on Acid. Heh – Then the crowd is too.

  67. Lucky girl. Who among us wouldn’t be singing just as loudly if we were there?

No kidding. And I’ve been known to let loose a “WOOOOOOOOO!”

Or when I finally got “‘Til I’m Blue” at the Charlottesville show I believe it went, “OHMIGODTHAT’SMYSONG!”

  68. Stop making me giggle guys! I sound like a 12 year old girl, and I’m gonna wake up my family! *gigglesnort*

  69. Dammit- this went as fast as it does when you’re actually there!

    I know! MORE!

I guess it’s a compliment to him that the shows are never enough. More, more, more.

  70. I sound like a 12 year old girl, and I’m gonna wake up my family!

Hee! My 4 yr old is sleeping right beside me, I am biting my lip to keep from laughing out loud.

    (Or squeeing)

  71. NEW SONG b/c he’s at 100,000 followers! What did he say it’s called?

Crap, cannot decipher a single lyric! BUT what I hear, I like! I hear piano? NICE melody and glory notes! WHeee, cannot wait for vids!

  72. Talking about doing something for the fans because of the 100,000 on twitter – “Lo and behold, you pulled it off.”

    New Song!

  73. He’s doing a NEW song in honor of those 100,000 twitter followers

  74. Once video gets posted of that duet someone better send it to Michel Slezak ASAP. Dude will piss himself lol

    OMGOMG new song FTW!!

  75. HappyDaisy:

    New song?! “You and I?”

Yo, good ears, that’s definitely what he’s singing! You and IIIIIII!! Yay, I like it!

  76. I think I like, lots.

Crap, I feel like I might squee.

I don’t DO that. Really. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

  77. I just have this vision of people going SQUEEEEEE… and exploding. Boom. Gone.

I need videos like now. Maybe I should do like I used to do for Christmas when I was a kid… and hurry up and go to bed ’cause I just KNOW in the morning there will be presents…

Sigh. I love him. That really is all.

  78. Is it over??? My ustream keeps going off!

    YOU AND IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII . . .

    2153 fans on DCO!!

  79. Brief clip of Barracuda: http://img413.yfrog.com/i/6jc.mp4/
Maybe someone can tweet that to Slezak and Rushfield =P. I’m still looking for You and IIIII! Dying to hear the rest of the lyrics. Ugh, keep getting kicked off this ustream. Is it over?

ETA: Ha, BootStar, you and me both.

batgirl, You and I was one of the David Hodges cowrites.

  80. Maybe I should do like I used to do for Christmas when I was a kid… and hurry up and go to bed ’cause I just KNOW in the morning there will be presents…

Yeah! Let’s hope Santa brings some awesome videos, especially of the new song! From what I could hear, I liked it much better than Make Believe.

  81. Tierbee – u have a first grader, a redskin’s devotion and a deep love for cookie. I think we might get along. :)

This is the hottest cookie ever. Reminds me of his U2 look, which was my favorite hair of the season. And the vest? Omg. He’s looking fit and scrumptious. Please come quickly record #2. Please please
    please.

  82. From what I could hear, I liked it much better than Make Believe.

Yeah, I like “Make Believe” but this one… I’m *really* excited to hear this one. Made me all giddy and stuff. :)

  83. Wow the people at Morongo certainly got their monies worth. Carly, 1 newish song and 1 new song. That was pretty awesome of DC & The Anthemic.

  84. You and I sounded great!! Praying to the Youtube gods and DC videographers that someone will put up a video with good sound!

  85. Can he please start recording this CD like NOW??

Oh jesus now his tweet is making me cry. WTF is wrong with me??

  86. I for one love David Cook and the Anthemic. It’s so official. Can’t wait for next tour.

  87. batgirl, You and I was one of the David Hodges cowrites.

Ok, thanks. I know he mentioned a few songs in the Idolatry interview and I couldn’t remember which song was written with who. Maybe that means I should watch it again…

  88. Tweet from Dave: thedavidcook Hope you guys liked “U and I” and everything else. Two months seemed like forever. I missed playing shows…

  89. ~runs into thread~ Taaaake my haaaaand……take a staaand….you and IIIIIII….

You GUYS! Livestream! Barracuda! CarDave! New song that kicks ass! Also best version of MB yet! UGG! The exclamation points! Sorry….it’s just, well, you understand. Boom goes the dynamite, and all that.

~collapses on imaginary sofa, waits for vids to show up~

  90. From Cookie’s twitter (sorry not sure how to do nice block quotes):

    # Hope you guys liked “U and I” and everything else. Two months seemed like forever. I missed playing shows…
less than 10 seconds ago via mobile web

  91. Please come quickly record #2. Please please
    please.

    I know, right?

I actually need to buy a new copy of DCTR #1. True story: My kids (have a 4 yr old, too) love “Light On” with a passion. The damn CD skips there now, we listened to it so many times.

But if I could have me record #2, like ASAP, I would be a very, very happy girl. *Sigh*

Is it time for Race for Hope yet? :)

  92. I love how Cook fans get along so well. Hugz guys! I’m.not.coming.down.from.this.cookie.high.

I was watching my brothers basketball game earlier. Beside me this woman kept yelling “Come on Cookie!” turns out her sons last name was Cook! LOL it’s hard to focus on your brother when your mind keeps drifting to Cookie.

  93. Oh jesus now his tweet is making me cry. WTF is wrong with me??

It’s withdrawal, I’m telling ya. We’ve survived on Twitter crumbs and videos and montages but… You know how when you’re starving you’re not supposed to go pig out and eat a lot? Well we just had a FEAST and there are bound to be some effects of that ;)

    You and IIIIIIII…

Maybe that means I should watch it again…

Bwah! I love when people mention old vids/interviews and I just *have* to run back and watch again.

Those peeps got their money’s worth for this show. Jellus.

  95. Aww, I miss him. You know, they do owe us a Norfolk show… so bring your fine selves to Norfolk with that new song that I think I might really love… please? :)

  96. this is kinda off-topic.
I’m watching Olyimpics figure skating Gala show.
American ice dancing silver medalists are using David Cook’s “billie jean”.
    It’s cool!

  97. Sigh. I remember how late I stayed up (2AM) for a YouTube of the first time he played Make Believe. I’m worried I might do it again for You and I, and I have church in the morning. Ah well.

  98. FYI, the US ice dancing olympic couple used cookie’s Billie Jean for their encore performance :)

  99. I really need decent video of ‘You And I’ because I think I might love it. Even over the Ustream I could pick out a very distinctive piano and bass lines, and the bridge sounds really hooky. It was a great way to end the show – you could tell how excited Dave and the band were to play it.

Heroes on NBC Sports, Billie Jean Cook skate in Olympics primetime, goofball band twitvid, Barracuda w/Carly, and new song. Good night in the Cookverse. GOOD night.

  100. Are there any other vids of U & I that will not make my ears bleed? I am dying to hear it. DYING!!! Save me. Please.

  101. I really need decent video of ‘You And I’ because I think I might love it.

Me too! I am really excited to hear it with better sound quality.

Heroes on NBC Sports, Billie Jean Cook skate in Olympics primetime, goofball band twitvid, Barracuda w/Carly, and new song. Good night in the Cookverse. GOOD night.

    Yes, indeed. Awesomeness.

  102. that was a cool twitvid! i love when he does that!
I hope to see videos posted later

  103. LOL, yeah I was so excited that something popped up (that’s what she said) that I forgot to warn you that the sound kinda sux. Don’t shoot the messenger, yo. ;)

  104. Nope nothing new yet. Might have to wait till tomorrow. All the fans need to get to a CP to download good HQ vids to YouTube.

From what I could here U & I sounds good. I agree there are distinctive bass and piano lines. This is actually the first time I have paid attention to Monty’s bass line. Usually it’s just….there and I never hear it. It just blends in. This time it jumped out at my ears an made me pay attention.

Also the piano line sounds intriguing. And really nice Andy Skib harmony. That stood out as well. Usually everything is all DAVID!! GUITARS!!!Eleventy!!!! KWIM?

  105. Sigh! Delurking just to say, that it’s days like this that convince me I will never be able to give up David Cook.

  106. Also the piano line sounds intriguing. And really nice Andy Skib harmony. That stood out as well. Usually everything is all DAVID!! GUITARS!!!Eleventy!!!! KWIM?

He promised piano… and I heard piano… and I was glad. Hee!

  107. Hi, Lydia!

Delurking just to say, that it’s days like this that convince me I will never be able to give up David Cook.

    Yep. Can’t quit him.

  108. I really need decent video of ‘You And I’ because I think I might love it. Even over the Ustream I could pick out a very distinctive piano and bass lines, and the bridge sounds really hooky.

Exactly what I think. I REALLY think I like it a lot already, but I need to know that its lyrics don’t suck, haha.

  109. Oh, man, I’m tired. YouTube presents please be there when I wake up? Or at least when I get back from church?

  110. Sigh! Delurking just to say, that it’s days like this that convince me I will never be able to give up David Cook.

Yup, me too. It’s official. But please don’t tell me about any 12-step programs because I am not even close to hitting bottom! Give me another decade or two . . . ;-)

Signing off for now. See y’all later in the a.m. BootStar OUT!

  111. Oh, I could totally give up Cook anytime I wanted to. *twitch* Moar vids plees? *twitch*

Er, uh, what I meant to say is that I can absolutely wait until morning for a better quality video.

ETA: Sadly, I wouldn’t be surprised if RCA decided that Top 40 would probably embrace a song called U & I before they’d embrace a song called You And I.

  112. What if it is really spelled “U and I”, per his tweet? I mean he put quotation marks around it. I kinda hope not. Incorrect spelling/txt spk is a pet peeve of mine. Just sayin’.

  113. What if it is really spelled “U and I”, per his tweet?

He just needs to write it like Shania Twain.

    U and I!

    Make Believe!

    And so on :)

  114. I’ve never seen him this hot, or his forehead since top 2 week on AI, for that matter.

  115. I can’t quit DC and the band – esp when they look like they do in his twitvid

  116. @hodgesmusic Hope you guys liked “U and I” (via @thedavidcook) – nice. Love that song!

Hodges and Cook are both spelling it “U and I”.

  117. I’ve never seen him this hot

    Isn’t that the truth!
Rested + personal trainer + best hair in forever + tan (for Cookie) + white shirt = pretty fucking awesome.

Can’t wait to hear the new song.

  118. I’m not coping well with how good he’s looking in these pix and vids.

  119. Hodges and Cook are both spelling it “U and I”.

Are we doomed to forever speak in Twitter-ese? Going to be the death of this here English major…

  120. I’m not coping well with how good he’s looking in these pix and vids.

I was planning to get off the darn computer and go to sleep but… Ima have to watch that vid again!

  121. Well since my iPod won’t cooperate I better go to bed. I can’t wait until the morning!

  122. I will be uploading videos to MJSBigBlog btw Carly Smithson performed “Barracuda” with David as his special guest. David’s brother also came on stage and was talking about his old radio show. David also performed two of his new songs “You and I” and something else I’ll look up the name when I look back at the video

  123. Well since my iPod won’t cooperate I better go to bed. I can’t wait until the morning!

Aww, I had the same issue when I was sick and couldn’t get to the computer and that darn Bode Miller/Heroes vid came out – I had to wait like two days to see it, it wouldn’t work on my iPhone. Sads!

There should be even more vids tomorrow — it’ll be like Christmas in February!

  124. First vids are rolling in. Here’s You/U & I with intro banter:

Awesome! Too bad I still can’t make out too many lyrics. And the piano sounds a bit too tinkly in this vid. I’m sure they’ll work on it. I still love it.

About the “U” spelling… I normally don’t mind it at all, but it’s usually used for pop songs like FIBOU, SUBG… and those are kinda cheeky and young, so the text-speak makes sense. I don’t know that it suits this song, from what I’ve heard. Oh well. I still dig it a lot. Can’t wait for clearer audio to figure out and dissect the lyrics some more so I can figure out this “U” vs you business.

  125. Too bad I still can’t make out too many lyrics.

I couldn’t either. So I just gave in and went into Cookie-gazing trance. So much pretty.

  126. New song. A new song that I like. David could just call it new song and I’d be happy at this point.

Thanks, WordnerdArchie, that’s a much better video/audio. Sweet.

  127. Are we doomed to forever speak in Twitter-ese? Going to be the death of this here English major…

lol – I’m with you on that

    tierbee.

    Just say no to illiteracy!

And the piano sounds a bit too tinkly in this vid.

Agreed, they need to work on integrating the keyboards.

Classic Cookie song though. Strong, catchy chorus, instrumental bridge. As always, I’m less sure about the versus, but need to listen more. SUCH a hardship.

I wonder if this might also be the *inspirational* song he tweeted recently about workingon finishing up?
    Chorus:
    You and I
    Do or die
    never stumble never say *something*
    Take my hand
    Take a stand
Cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again

  128. I also like the chorus on “U and I.” The piano part doesn’t sound quite right in the two videos.

  129. Liking You and I ( refuse to write U and I, lol). Love the piano and bass focus I’m hearing. Can’t wait for a studio version. On the shallow side, Cookie is looking yummy. Thank you to whatever stylist who convinced him to free the forehead. Short works for him.

I know David has said he wanted to get in shape for health and concert stamina reasons but no guy starts to look this hot without a special woman in the picture. Do you think we’ll find out who she is before they have been married for a year or so and their first kid on the way, LOL.

  130. U and I reminds me of Boys Like Girls song Two Are Better Than One, but more rocking, and with a better singer! Hope it’s as big a hit as that song!

  131. I can’t quit DC and the band – esp when they look like they do in his twitvid

Don’t they look hot!!!??? Whew! I just came her a moment ago.

So is You and I or U and I on the new album?

  132. Carly can *wail* – she has the perfect voice to sing Heart. Love it. And Mr. Cook was indeed spanking that guitar. Whew.

  133. Another really good “U and I”

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww_kyp7V1xE

OMGZ, wordnerdarchie thank you! This one is much better. I’m SO F-in happy right now. A new DC song that I flove! I was starting to fear that it would not happen, what with my meh reactions to Souvenir, We’re Only Honest, Make Believe, This Year… my faith is renewed :). O happy day!

Yeah, something wonky going on with the sound of that keyboard. I’m sure it’ll get worked out though.

  134. Cook fans are so organized — videos are already up! Awesome!

I’m dying — Carly sang??? I love her.

  135. aww.. cool vid of Carly and David on ‘Barracuda’. Carly has such a rockin voice!
..off to see other goodies :)

  136. OK, I gotta go to bed. More goodies in the morning I’m sure. I’ll be singing “U and IIIIIIIII…” in my sleep.

  137. Daym! I missed him! Loved the new song…he looks incredible with that hair! Wow just wow. Off to see more vids. Can’t sleep.

  138. Well, tierbee, we got to open some of the presents before Christmas morning, and there will be more tomorrow (later today). :)

Thanks for this awesome thread, MJ. Thanks to all the posters who provide links and other good stuff.

    Thank you David Cook! :)

  139. In honor of the frustratingly named “U & I”, all I can say is….O.M.G.!!! Luv it SFM!!

I sure missed him, but DAMN, this break has obviously worked for him. DC looks and sounds better than ever. Thanks to MJ for having this thread up and to all the fine peeps who took or found vids so quickly. This really has been the best day to be a David Cook fan. :)

  140. Am I really awful for not even paying attention to the other band members? I can’t stop staring at HIM. Good freaking lord that’s a whole lotta pretty. Can we have a twidvid everyday???

  141. Oh hell, I can’t sleep.

What I think I hear so far:

    Day’s just begun
    Ocean ?????
    to pull us under
    Waves coming close
    erasing what we know
    let’s draw another

    What we love
is what we have not enough tonight
    ????
    Tell me you believe
in more than we can see
    can’t help but wonder
    can’t help but wonder

You and I, do or die
    ??? ??? suffer
    ??????
    Take my hand
    take a stand
cuz there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again (?)
    You and I
    You and I

And all the kids grow old
    stars are turning cold
    life is misery
    We’re running out of years
scream loud and give three cheers
    for one less memory

    Chorus

    You and I
    Do or die
    ?????
    One last time

    Chorus

  142. Day’s just begun
Ocean ????? (the oceans all but one??)
    to pull us under
    Waves coming close
erasing what we know (let’s erase the world we know)
let’s draw another (and draw another)

    What we love
is what we have not enough tonight
    ???
    Tell me you believe
in more than we can see
    can’t help but wonder
    can’t help but wonder

You and I, do or die
    ??? ??? suffer

    You and I
    You and I

    stars are turning cold
life is misery (we fight this misery?)
    We’re running out of years
scream loud and give three cheers
for one less memory (for one last memory. memory)

    Chorus

    You and I
    Do or die
    ?????

    say farewell, one last time
    One last time

    Chorus

  143. Sunchick, you rock!

I pretty much agree with what you have, except maybe some parts of these:

    What we love
Is what we have not enough tonight
    So tell me you believe
In a world that we can see ?
    Can’t help but wonder
    Can’t help but wonder

Just you and I, do or die
As the something every day is something right?
Just take my hand, take a stand
Cuz there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
You and I, You and I

You and I, do or die
    Save this something??
    One last time

But I’m not sure. It’s pretty hard.

ETA: Actually, Joyed, I think I hear all the kings grow old as well, but I saw sunchick put kids and got swayed. Definitely not sure though =P.

In other news, that Barracuda vid was great! I loved DC playing the guitar on his knee at the end, grabbing a pick from the mike stand that Carly was holding after he flicked the one he had. Such fun…

  144. This is fun! Like solving a puzzle. I hear this:

    Day has just begun
    The oceans all are one
    to pull us under
    Waves coming close
let’s erase the world we know
    and draw another

    But what we love
cause what we have is not enough tonight
    So tell me you believe
in a world that we can’t see
    can’t help but wonder
    can’t help but wonder

Just you and I, do or die
As the summer’s everything that’s in her eyes
    So take my hand
    take a stand
cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    You and I
    You and I

And all the kings grow old
    the stars are turning cold
    when life is misery
    Running out of years
Just scream loud and give three cheers
    for one less memory
    Memory
    Chorus
    You and I
    Do or die
    Say farewell
    One last time
    Chorus

  145. Videos are still coming in, and probably will be all day tomorrow – but after all these concert dates, the fans have the turn-around time down to an art. “Barracuda” – been wishing for that since the Idol tour. W0W.

I need to pick the best “You and I” for audio, (or U and I ) and save it, because one thing we know for sure – the next time they play it, it will have changes, like the “Make Believe” from tonight has differences from the first time it was played, and IDIFY is totally transformed from the song on DCTR. And “Lie” is just an experience.

I love that David trusts us with the raw material – and knows that we ‘get’ the ‘Progression’ thing that happens in concert, look forward to it, even. The Boyz were on fire, and the crowd was too. What a night. Thanks for the thread, MJ.

  146. Terrific show, he looked great, sounded awesome, and I love the new song. I love that he got to do Barracuda with Carly too. I can’t wait until his new cd come out, I think I’m going to like it.

  147. The late night discussion of the Tewer is back on tonite. Luv it. David seems so happy to be back on stage. He looks so hot tonite. :)

  148. Here’s an MP3 somebody ripped of U and I.

Also, post-show reports say Dave told fans he’s traveling to Europe on Monday. Visit to 19E in London? Writing with Max Martin in Sweden? Hopefully Twitter will tell.

  149. Okay, I’m going to bed now, I swear. But first I think the chorus is…

    You and I
    Do or die
As the sun burns everything that’s ( in our eyes?)
    Take my hand
    Take a stand
Cuz there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    You and I

Pretty sure at least that I hear sun burns. I have a feeling somebody must have been a wee bit inspired by his Cali surroundings. Cuz then there’s this:

    Waves coming close
erasing what we know (let’s erase the world we know)
let’s draw another (and draw another)

Yeah, the exact wording alludes me, but I am thinking it’s some kind of beachy metaphor for perserverance. Like when you draw something in the sand and then a wave comes in and erases it, you can give up and walk away or draw another.

And all the kids grow old
    stars are turning cold
life is misery (we fight this misery?)
    We’re running out of years
scream loud and give three cheers
for one less memory (for one last memory. memory)

Ha, cheering for one last memory is way less cynical, eh? That’s probably it. (Damn, Dave, you better have another angsty relationship tune on deck somewhere for me to love, like, say, OH, WithMeEmpty, cuz too much of this inspirational Living On A Prayer-ish lyrical content makes me itchy. )

  150. Well I’m going to wait for better video/audio, but can’t wait to hear Barracuda with Carly, and the new song.

But I was able to see that I liked his hair, excellent, and the outfit. He was looking hott.

  151. Yeah one of the reports said that he’s going to Europe on Monday but he didnt know where he was going exactly. How’s that for a WTF? lol

  152. Okay, okay, sorry, but I have to get the shallow out of the way first.

That man is looking extremely – I say extremely – hot at the moment.

    Good hair!!!!????

And I won’t go into detail on the results of the fitness regime…

Right – I’ve only skimmed through U and I once and I need a few more listenings – it’s hard to really get a feel for things on first listening on a scratchy Youtube (unendingly grateful as I am for everyone’s efforts in putting them up).

I really love what I can hear of the underlying sounds and textures – hooray! What i thought he meant by dynamics and hearing the instruments does seem to be developing there.

I also like Make Believe and can see that song and this song sitting alongside each other on an ‘interesting’ album, to quote the man himself.

    Exciting to see things developing….

(Edit: wow, lots of typos there. The excitement has obviously removed my ability to spell or hit the right keys! :lol)

  153. Oh – and I just have to add…

DC’s coming to Europe on Monday!

That means he might actually be coming to the UK??!!

  154. Okay, okay – listened to the mp3.

    Can I now officially announce:

    I love the new song!

  155. What does it say on his arm (that tattoo)I’ve never noticed that tattoo and what is the 14 on the other arm for?

  156. From Jen, and the Cookistas of DavidCookOfficial , Lyrics Thread

    U and I
    David Cook & David Hodges

    The day has just begun,
The ocean’s all but won and pulled us under
    The way this moment glows,
Let’s erase the world we know and draw another

    With what we love, is what we have enough… enough to hide {?}
So tell me you believe, in the world that we can’t see
We can’t help but wonder … we can’t help but wonder

Just U and I, do or die
As the sun burns everything that’s in her eyes
Take my hand, take a stand
‘Cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    U and I … U and I

When all the kings grow old,
Stars are turning cold, they bind this misery
    Running out of years,
Just scream loud and give three cheers, for one last memory … memory

Just U and I, do or die
As the sun burns everything that’s in her eyes
Take my hand, take a stand
‘Cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    U and I … U and I

    U and I … do or die
    Say farewell, one last time

Just U and I, do or die
As the sun burns everything that’s in her eyes
Take my hand, take a stand
‘Cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    U and I … U and I

Just U and I, do or die
As the sun burns everything that’s in her eyes
Take my hand, take a stand
‘Cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    U and I …

  157. Newbie here (I’m the Jen that s3rious just mentioned above…heh!), but thought I could assist with an answer:

What does it say on his arm (that tattoo)I’ve never noticed that tattoo and what is the 14 on the other arm for?

He’s kept the meaning of the 14 a secret thus far, but the other arm is the last stanza of the poem “The Dash” by Linda Ellis. The poem was read at Adam’s funeral.

On the lyrics to the new song, as s3rious mentioned, I’ve been working all night on this with one of the Cookistas, and that’s what we were able to come up with through watching/listening to multiple videos. Not 100% sure of course, but there it is.

ETA: Wanted to add more photos that I didn’t see linked yet: Twitpics from livehead16

  158. DC looked great last night, loved the new song and enjoyed watching him banging on his guitar…..i want more pls.

  159. David and his seasoned band sounded and looked fantastich!!!!

That new song is infectious!! And awwwww Carly!!

That dude puts on such a fun amazing show.

  160. *New album coming.* Vows to embrace and enjoy music without trying to speculate over radio, charts, sales, etc. Fails.

You know what this is like spring training before the real sports season kicks off. Wait till this year!

    Gets excited even more!!

  161. 6 hours of sleep and I’m baaaaaack! I am dedicated. What’s this I hear about Europe?

  162. s3rious – thanks for the lyrics.

    I like those.

I like the lyrics to Make Believe as well, so everything is running smoothly in my Cook fandom at the mo.

  163. Haha, 6 hours of sleep here too and back for more YouTube goodness!

  164. David looks GREAT! I really like the hair and clothes. He also looks very fit. Whatever he’s doing, it’s working. He sounds great too. Cool that Carly was there and did Barracuda.

The show sounds like fun and I’m happy for those who were able to attend.

  165. Wow! David looks amazing! Thanks to everyone for the videos.

  166. David was in excellent form last night. I like the new song except the tinkling keyboard sound. It somehow needs to fuse better to the music. Besides that, lovin’ our little taste of DC for the moment.

  167. This has turned into a great Sunday morning! Love the new song, love the Carly footage. I’m a happy camper today. :)

  168. Thank You everyone for the all the links and lyric dissection of
U and I. It’s funny, when I read someone’s post of the lyrics, I watched the video and did hear it that way, then when I read another post with the little differences and watched the video,I heard it that way . Power of suggestion, I guess!
I liked the song. I suppose I’m probably alone on this one, but from the verses I kind of get a slowed-down Every Kind Of People
( Robert Palmer )vibe-I really love that song.
Great to see and hear them again as well as Carly !

  169. Incipit, what you wrote touched me:

I need to pick the best “You and I” for audio, (or U and I ) and save it, because one thing we know for sure – the next time they play it, it will have changes, like the “Make Believe” from tonight has differences from the first time it was played, and IDIFY is totally transformed from the song on DCTR. And “Lie” is just an experience.

I love that David trusts us with the raw material – and knows that we ‘get’ the ‘Progression’ thing that happens in concert, look forward to it, even.

Happy sigh. I trust him right back.

  170. Thanks for all the Cook video MJ. It really does feel like Christmas morning. After several listens, I think the new song has a lot of hit potential, but like someone else posted up thread, I am no longer worrying so much about chart position, sales, etc. I think Cook has proven that he will continue to make music I enjoy and entertain me for a long time. I do want him to be a big star because he seems to crave rock stardom, but he is realistic enough to know that success in the music industry is a total crap shoot. There is certainly nothing wrong with making a good living doing something you love.

……Tierbee, I do have to agree to your “Yum.”

  171. I could listen to David’s banter all day!

  172. Joining the six hours sleep club. Barracuda is, uh, hello guitar beating. Nice of you to come to the party, and you brought Carly with you, too.

I also like Make Believe and can see that song and this song sitting alongside each other on an ‘interesting’ album, to quote the man himself.

Cosign. Angsty Relationship Dave is my favorite flavor, but he already wrote Analog Heart so I don’t expect that album again. A song or two like Make Believe, though, making the new album would make me extra happy. Anyway, I like the “looking out at the ocean, pondering what’s on horizon” World I Know-ish vibe mixed with a little bit of Living On A Prayer that is U and I for a change of pace. (Lyrically speaking, I mean.) And also, gotta love the word “sun” in the chorus. Man after my own heart. ;)

    Yay Cookistas. o/ They rock.

    The way this moment glows,

I still think this is “the wave is coming close” mostly because it goes with all the imagery in the first verse, what with the ocean reference, and the erasing and drawing again. Then again, “day just begun” = sunrise=moment glowing.

Quick thought about the Europe trip… Okay, this is a longshot as he’s already slated to work on the new Coldplay album, but did Brian Eno pop into anybody’s head? RCA hasn’t named a producer yet, and there was the random Talking Heads gushing on Twitter and a Brian Eno name drop in an interview not too long ago. Probably not, but it would be quite a coup.

  173. Thanks for the video. Loving the new song and the new haircut. He really looks good. I’m so jealous of all who got to go. Can’t wait for the new CD.

  174. So excited for new music from David! I miss him terribly. Haven’t been here in a while. Does David have a new tattoo?

  175. U & I is a great song. It is so current and it has the best part of Cookie’s meaningful lyrics plus credible rockability from the band. I love seeing Cookie work that guitar. After watching the new song and Barracuda I think I need a cold shower. I have never seen Cookie in suck fearless rock God form. I LOVE it. Love the new haircut. Locktopus is GONE!!!

  176. Lie gets my vote for best performance of the night ( at least from the songs uploaded so far )

  177. Water Cooler Convo : David Cook Morongo Concert

I went to the David Cook concert at Morongo Casino tonight. This was his first concert since New Year’s Eve, and he’s been busy writing songs for his next album. He played one of those new songs at the end of the show – it’s called “U and I” and was co-written with David Hodges.

Also, his American Idol pal Carly Smithson showed up as a special guest to sing “Barracuda”, a song she and David and Jason Castro had wanted to play on the Idol tour together.

The playlist: I Did It For You (I love this live. So much better than on the CD. Love the guitar orgy at the end!), Mr. Sensitive, Heroes, Kiss On The Neck, Lie, Declaration, Bar-ba-sol, Make Believe, Barracuda, Come Back To Me, Light On (encore), U And I (encore).

One thing that was really cool was that before one of his songs, David asked for not a moment of silence but cheering for the people of Haiti and Chile. It was a really nice, loud outpouring of love and support. :)

As always, Cook puts on a great show. My only complaint is that it seemed too short. But he looked and sounded fantastic, and we got a new song and Carly! I wasn’t sure what to expect from the venue, but I thought the sound was really good, and I had a good view, so thumbs up for me.

  178. sunchick interesting thoughts. I’ve been trying to figure out what 19/RCA stable writers are in Europe (Max Martin is the only name I can come up with since he did mention him as a possibility) but I haven’t actually considered the trip might be producer related. No clue there hmm. We’re already into March and he made it sound like in that interview the other day he wanted to shoot for 40 songs written so I’m leaning more towards writing but I wonder if the fact that a producer hasn’t been named yet means they may have decided to go with more than one producer?

Dayum I feel a little giddy this morning! I’m like OD’d on vid and pics.

  179. Hey you guys, I finally figured out what David is going to be doing in Europe (not really). He is going to Germany to take in a Kelly Clarkson concert and then record a duet with her (only in my dreams), or at least discuss what they will be singing together for Idol Gives Back. Maybe get matching tattoos? I have a very active imagination, sorry.

  180. Suenigma, I can have an active imagination, too. Maybe he’s going
    to co-write with Muse !

  181. I didn’t read all the comments, so maybe this was posted. Last night at the Olympics, it was the Olympics Figure Skating Exhibition Gala. The competition is over, the medals have been doled out and the winners get to strut their stuff in fancy-free routines to music people actually like (hopefully).

USA’s Meryl Davis and Charlie White. They won silver in ice dancing. They skated to David Cook’s version of Billie Jean. Their synchronization was spot on.

  182. Oooo, nice vids! Thanks all.

So did the band decide to dress as blackjack dealers for the casino gig? The garb surprised me a bit, as did the shorter hair, but whatev. Great music as always!!

Man, this is a great Sunday music morning pour moi~ :-)

  183. I am popping back in here whenever I get a minute and watching more videos… looking at more pics… and I am SO HAPPY! What a nice end to a trying week starting with sick me, then sick kid, then crazy work schedule. Now I can kick back and watch my beautiful teevee boyfriend… until it’s time for US/Canada hockey :) … and then I can come watch MORE. I love this thread. LOVE.

  184. the new song is a bit more interesting melodically wise and i
    LOVE david but seriously
isn’t there any other subject to write about? it’s like he’s writing the same song about relationships over & over.

    MAKE BELIEVE
Can we make believe, that we still believe, in anything?
You know that all that I am is in the palm of your hand
So make believe that you give a damn.
    And make believe. ”

    U & I
“just U and I, do or die
As the sun burns everything that’s in her eyes
Take my hand, take a stand
‘Cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    U and I … U and I”

even the few lyrics i could figure out of the SNIPPET from the vlog
    “and the world stop turning
i’ll be right here with you…”

    new theme, PLEASE!

  185. I have a very active imagination, sorry.

suenigma, I dig your active imagination. I’ve pictured a KC/DC duet in my brain many a time when listening to certain songs of theirs. Their voices would kick so much butt together… ugh!

  186. justic, I actually read You and I as being about getting past the external crap that sinks relationships (or possibly not). Make Believe, We’re Only Honest, Lie, and arguably Avalanche are all about the internal problems that the parties try to paper over. So I could see wanting to move away from that, but I think You and I did.

Not that I want an entire album of various-stages-of-love songs, but it’s not like DCTR was that. There was a bit about family, a bit about fame, a bit about self-loathing/bad coping mechanisms.

  187. ^ I’m all for branching out and tackling various points of interest, but a lot of the “similar vibe” thing depends how you interpret the songs. For me, Honest is about living a lie, putting on a facade and being dependent on this unhealthy state of denial, Lie is a bittersweet wishing you could put off inevitable bad news for one more day song, Make Believe is looking back on simpler more innocent times and wishing you could go back there. U and I is the least relationship-y in my mind. It’s more of a general taking stock and realizing yeah, shit happened, time marched on, all that, but I still have it in me for one more good fight, how about you song. Like I said, it immediately made me think of Living On A Prayer. Avalanche to me is the most romantic one, kind of an epic love thing. Dave leaves a lot of lyrics ambiguous enough that they could be about romantic relationships or you could relate to them as something else entirely. There’s an ongoing debate as to whether Analog Heart is a collection of songs about a bad break up with one particular girl, a compilation of various bad relationships, or is it really chronicling the break up of Axium, but put into the context of a romance gone bad. YKWIM?

  188. Avalanche to me is the most romantic one, kind of an epic love thing.

And to me, it’s really about someone who can’t make a real connection to this other person except during sex. I can’t really find it romantic because it’s so. damn. sad.

But, like you said, ambiguous lyrics.

  189. Eeeeeeh! I’m in the midst of another brutal business trip and was on the plane last night so couldn’t catch the cellcast. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all who have posted pics and videos and articles! I’m liking the new song a lot already.

  190. Yeah some days I lean towards Analog Heart being about the Axium break up some days not.

Hmmm I don’t know… aren’t most songs about relationships in one form or another?

David doesn’t seem to have had super luck on the relationship front. I know in the past he has written songs about being in love. Peace of Mind and The Truth (although TT is a break up song too, cause he wants only her but she doesn’t want him anymore) stand out. But he’s not like super happy go lucky about it like the complete opposite side of the spectrum a la Fairy Tale Taylor Swift.

So I don’t think unless something drastic changes in his personality he will ever be writing upbeat songs about love. So I think the other side of his musical coin is the sarcastic, salty lyrics, driving beat of songs like Let Go and Kiss on The Neck.

I would have liked him to have previewed that kind of song but I will not turn You and I down.

  191. And to me, it’s really about someone who can’t make a real connection to this other person except during sex. I can’t really find it romantic because it’s so. damn. sad.

Awww, really? I’ll have to listen to it again (hardship, cough) and see if I start to rethink it. I just ran with the opening stanza and assumed if someone makes you whole again, the relationship has to be more than just sexual. Plus, well, the vocal on that one is just too damn distractingly sexy. Sadly, he could sing about stepping on a hill of fireants, and if he sang it like that, I’d probably decide it was a metahpor for something awesome. (Hey now there’s an idea for new lyrical content. If Owl City could hit it big with Fireflies, why not Fireants?)

I guess with Avalanche I pictured, like, I dunno, some epic Gothic romance, a reunion between tortured star crossed lovers and he’s singing to this one person who will always make the earth move for him/makes him feel whole=soulmate. It’s crushing because of the power of it (like an avalanche), but it’s also exhilarating (rolling in your arms, I feel alive beside you.) Yeah, it doesn’t sound like Dave, but I chalked that up to the Kevin Griffin influence. Annnnnd we just highlighted the ambiguity right there. :D

I’m a long way yet from any verdicts, and while I’m listening to this very excellent mp3 v2 of the new song – best I’ve heard yet, with the most balanced sound – I have to point out that among the cool images in the quoted post, nhd brought ‘the’ most excellent image from last night, IMO. It’s from Livehead16.

It’s already being called the ICU picture in some places – both meanings intended, BTW. Because Yes, he’s looking right at you. ;)

    The ICU Picture. http://twitpic.com/15ti5j

  193. So I don’t think unless something drastic changes in his personality he will ever be writing upbeat songs about love.

Declaration can be interpreted as a pretty upbeat, positive proclamation of love. Although it’s not really about romantic love, it could be, sorta.

If you’re looking for lyrical poignancy, you’re listening to the wrong genre of music. This is HAC and– maybe– CHR fare. What sells is what plays, and what plays is what sells.

I kinda have to agree. Make Believe and We’re Only Honest and Souvenir have really interesting lyrics, but melodically they would NEVER be played on radio. Much like the MWK stuff– really neat imagery, but seriously? They’d never get played on HAC or CHR. You and I, and that vlog snippet do not appear as interesting lyrically, but they have better hooks, melodies, etc. that may make they interesting for radio listeners, IMO.

I still hope DC writes a hit radio song that tells an interesting story, rather than rely on a string of vague lovesick imagery though. I like songs that tell a specific story, like he did with Mr. Sensitive, to a slightly lesser extent with Lie, and back in Analog Heart days with Makeover/The Truth/Silver. All these love songs talking in general terms about longing or bitterness or what have you… I don’t want too many of those…

  194. I kinda half-liking this new song. I don’t think it is a great song, but I think it is better than little snippets we heard of the other song. Doubtful if it will be a big hit, but you never know.

Just noticed that Chris Cornell’s version of Billie Jean is #340 on iTunes. Haven’t really noticed the one before on the iTunes chart, so I don’t know if this appearance is new or not, but I wonder if people are looking David Cook’s version after the Davis and White performance, but can’t find it and got this one instead. I think they should really make David Cook’s version available on iTunes, even now it is still by far his best song.

  195. Make Believe and We’re Only Honest and Souvenir have really interesting lyrics, but melodically they would NEVER be played on radio.

IMO, WOH was total college-radio bait (Souvenir might have been too). And for the indie artist Cook was at the time, that’s a totally appropriate market. It could have still been an appropriate target for that song if they’d chosen to soft-pedal a push at college stations on the tour (I don’t think they have a formal adds process).

And I maintain that MB has four times more interesting a hook than the snippet does. Not as immediate as You and I, which I admit is a better fit for mainstream radio, but I’d still feel happier hearing that song on the album than the Wattenberg one.

  196. It’s already being called the ICU picture in some places – both meanings intended, BTW

I almost hate to ask, but what does ICU mean? Is it the same meaning as the medical term ?

  197. I don’t think Billie Jean is his best song. My favorite David song is WOH, but I think hisbest song is Permanent. I also think the magic that was there in David’s Billie Jean is also there in David’s version of Anodyne. I’d love to see what would happen if performed that song on a national TV platform, and if it would bowl people over just as much as Billie Jean did back in the day. Pipe dream.

The radio friendly debate and unequivocably declaring what would and would never get played is not my forte, though. Obviously there’s a formula to the stuff that Tedder does, or Max Martin, or Akon, or Timba, etc. But I like to think there’s an intangible something every now and again that strikes the right chord and makes for the unpredictable hit. It’s the part of me that wants to believe the music industry is really like that one awesome scene in Walk The Line, where Johnny goes in to cut his first single and starts playing a super popular Christian hymn…

Sam Phillips: Bring… bring it home? All right, let’s bring it home. If you was hit by a truck and you was lying out there in that gutter dying, and you had time to sing *one* song. Huh? One song that people would remember before you’re dirt. One song that would let God know how you felt about your time here on Earth. One song that would sum you up. You tellin’ me that’s the song you’d sing? That same Jimmy Davis tune we hear on the radio all day, about your peace within, and how it’s real, and how you’re gonna shout it? Or… would you sing somethin’ different. Somethin’ real. Somethin’ *you* felt. Cause I’m telling you right now, that’s the kind of song people want to hear. That’s the kind of song that truly saves people. It ain’t got nothin to do with believin’ in God, Mr. Cash. It has to do with believin’ in yourself.

Johnny Cash: [after a pause] I got a couple of songs I wrote in the Air Force. You got anything against the Air Force?

    Sam Phillips: No.

    Johnny Cash: I do.

  198. I almost hate to ask, but what does ICU mean? Is it the same meaning as the medical term ?

ICU as in the medical term, yes – and ICU as in ‘I See You’ – because that bright eyed, happy look seems to be a direct connection at the moment the picture was taken – he’s looking right at ‘you’ – or it appears that way. ;)

  199. Once video gets posted of that duet someone better send it to Michel Slezak ASAP. Dude will piss himself lol

    OMGOMG new song FTW!!

I thought exactly the same thing!!! ROFLMAO!!

  200. I noticed that MJ has posted the complete setlist for Adam’s concerts. Thanks MJ! It’s nice to know the details.

For those not familiar with DCO (David’s setlist is always posted there in the tour thread), here is his setlist from last night.

    I Did it For You
    Mr. Sensitive
    Heroes
Kiss on the Neck (with Hotel California snippet)
    Lie
    Declaration
    Bar-ba-sol
    Make Believe (2009, unreleased)
Barracuda (Heart cover w/special guest: Carly Smithson)
    Come Back to Me
    Light On
    You and I (U and I)* (2010, unreleased)

*The setlist taped to the stage lists this song as “You and I”, while David’s tweet listed it as “U and I”.

  201. Oh – I think we can all tie ourselves up in knots forever about which songs will be radio friendly, in which formats.

Sometimes it follows to formula – how else to explain the prolifora of same-soundy, somewhat pale and insipid songs that regularly dominate charts on both sides of the Atlantic.

But sometimes, just sometimes, something different and really strong does break through – not very often I admit, but it does happen. Though I suspect that such songs actually sell albums as much as singles.

I guess at the end of the day, I’m happy to hear Make Believe because it is – for me, for you – authentic Cookie lyrics, with a stronger sound and beat: and I like that.

U and I excites me because, – yes! – I can hear those underlying musical dynamics that I was promised and that DC’s music needs in order to progress from DCTR, IMO. I think it still needs some work: the verses are really exciting, the chorus not so much, at the moment. The verse sound is very slightly Elbowish to me, which nearly made me lose control completely…

But anyhow – yes! I desperately want Mr Cook to have a big hit off the bat on DCTR2. I want it for him and his proclaimed desire for World domination and I want it for me so that I can have more and more future music and will never again have to read snarky comments about how he never made it beyond the AI fanbase.

But, you can’t second guess the market – as CBTM definitely goes to prove. A song the fans were almost hoodwinked into accepting against their better judgement and dislike for hairy/windy lyrics, as the second single, because CHR would supposedly love it. Hmmph.

And that being so, I’m just going to enjoy the developments and cheer the musical progression and smile because I see some glimmers of original Cook lyrics peeking through the mainstream forest, even if we’re not back to full pre-AI glories yet!

  202. seriously:
    02/28/2010 at 4:08 pm
    Here’s the Morongo banter transcript.

Thank you, Seriously! (quite seriously) I know that’s a lot of time invested…nicely and quickly done, much appreciated.

And, It seems David’s opening statement answers the ‘why a one-off concert now?’ question. Heh.

  203. Thank you, Seriously! (quite seriously) I know that’s a lot of time invested…nicely and quickly done, much appreciated.

You’re very welcome! It took over 4 hours. Dave was very chatty and clocked in at about 2,000 words!

  204. IIRC, it’s something really WTF? like Down Town Monty Brown. No, downtown isn’t two words and Monty’s last name isn’t Brown. Don’t think about it too hard; it’ll make you head hurt.

  205. First time poster longtime David Cook fan!! I am likely reading too much into the proposed lyrics but does anyone else think You and I could be about David and his fans, and the often temporary nature of fame. Maybe his trepidation about continued success? The kings (if that is the lyric) maybe a reference to the Midwest Kings?

    The Lyrics :
    David Cook & David Hodges

    The day has just begun,
The ocean’s all but won and pulled us under
    The way this moment glows,
Let’s erase the world we know and draw another

    With what we love, is what we have enough… enough to hide {?}
So tell me you believe, in the world that we can’t see
We can’t help but wonder … we can’t help but wonder

Just U and I, do or die
As the sun burns everything that’s in her eyes
Take my hand, take a stand
‘Cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    U and I … U and I

When all the kings grow old,
Stars are turning cold, they bind this misery
    Running out of years,
Just scream loud and give three cheers, for one last memory … memory

Just U and I, do or die
As the sun burns everything that’s in her eyes
Take my hand, take a stand
‘Cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    U and I … U and I

    U and I … do or die
    Say farewell, one last time

Just U and I, do or die
As the sun burns everything that’s in her eyes
Take my hand, take a stand
‘Cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    U and I … U and I

Just U and I, do or die
As the sun burns everything that’s in her eyes
Take my hand, take a stand
‘Cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    U and I …

  206. Welcome to posting underdoc2! I must warn you posting is like crack. heh After looking over the lyrics you posted I don’t really know what it’s about. I must say those really seem like vintage Dave lyrics.

Oh, what’s DTMB supposed to be? Dance to my beat?

IIRC, it’s something really WTF? like Down Town Monty Brown.

How about “Don’t Touch Monty’s Beer”? “Damn That Monty Bastard” “Dangerous Tacos Make Bacon”?

  207. Well I for one do think it is possible to have meaningful or clever lyrics in pop songs. There are plenty of examples. Its just not easy (and not necessary to have a hit) so people don’t try much.

I do think its hard to tell a hit form grainy YouTube video though. The recorded version will give us a real indication of what’s what. Plus, you have to take into consideration timing… in what kind of pop landscape will his next song be released? We have no idea what will be going on in a few months or longer.

Right now all I want to hear is catchy. And I heard catchy. And man, there were all kind of interesting things happening in the music/rhythm to me. Already that is a big improvement. So for now, I am pretty happy!

  208. Briefly, because I don’t know if anyone is still reading this thread, but last night? Was awesome. It was an awesomecake smothered in awesomesauce with awesomesprinkles on top. Seriously.

Not awesome was the weather, but even that created its own special atmosphere, as, through a luck of timing, I dropped off my friend at the casino to pick up our tickets and get a head start on his evening of gambling when I took a wrong turn and ended up next to the performance pavilion. Where the soundcheck was going on. So I sat shivering in the car with the window cracked and the rain *pounding* down and got to hear a couple of my favorite songs. Let me tell you, when David says he can’t half-ass when he sings and even rehearses full out? He’s not lying. And that goes double for the band.

I got too cold to stay for long, and all I could think was omg, we were going to freeeeeze that night, but it turned out that though it was cold in the beginning, by the end I was seriously considering ditching my sweater — my jacket, scarf and gloves were long gone by that point.

This band, you guys! This band is amazing and make it impossible to sit in your seat or stand still. (Even though Dave and the venue staff played the Morongo version of whack-a-mole all night — the staff would make us sit and Dave would holler at us to “Get up!”) After IDIFY opened the show, my friend M, who had never been to a show, leaned over to me and said, in so many words, “This @#$%^& band @#$%^& rocks!” And I said to him, in so many words, “Did I not @#$%^& tell you so?” I mean, that opening bass line hits you square in the chest (which for me = instant euphoria) and I got to see the 4-across lineup at the end, live, which I’d been dying to see, and we were off to the races. (Almost literally — they played for ~90 minutes and it felt like 15.)

I won’t go through a song by song review because I’m sure their are word limits on comments, but I will say Barracuda totally blew me away, not just because they actually, finally did it, not just because Carly rocked (she so did), not just because Dave looked so damn happy wailing on his guitar at the front of the stage, but because the band sounded so damn good — like they’d been playing the song all tour, instead of it being a one off.

And speaking of Dave looking happy, you guys, he was positively *giddy*. After BarBaSol, he said something like, “Man, I LOVE playing that song,” with his eyes lit up like a retriever about to jump in a lake for the hundredth time, simply because jumping in a lake is *the most awesome thing in the world*. I mean, he wasn’t bouncing on his toes, but it was *implied*. I half expected him to turn to Neal and say, “Can we do it again? Can we? Can we?” He was *that* happy.

And speaking of Dave period — Damn. I am not kidding when I say that as the lights came up, my first thought was “Who’s the smoking hot dude in the middle of the stage?” I mean, I think he’s attractive — I’ve always thought so. But last night he was so… so *something* I was kind of speechless. And if you’ve read this far you know that’s hard to do. Part of it was no doubt the fitness regimen and part of it was — and no kidding tierbee, I actually said to myself when I saw him, “Oh, he’s embraced the forehead. Thank god,” (I must have remembered you saying that) — but mostly, I think it was because he was so happy to be performing again it was beaming out his pores. He really is one of those people who sucks up energy from a crowd and spins it back out in waves of glee. And thankfully the band seems to be on the very same wavelength. Even Neal was grinning. Grinning! It was hilarious.

There’s more but yeesh, this is long enough. I still haven’t decided what I think of the new song — I will say I’ve yet to hear a recording that sounds as good as it did in the venue. I will also say that the show I saw last year in San Diego was a great show, but last night? Was a GREAT show. Woo!

  209. Terrific recap MollyAnnMay, thanks so much for doing it. The whack a mole totally cracks me up.

    And this? Is love

And speaking of Dave looking happy, you guys, he was positively *giddy*. After BarBaSol, he said something like, “Man, I LOVE playing that song,” with his eyes lit up like a retriever about to jump into a lake for the hundredth time, simply because jumping in a lake is *the most awesome thing in the world*. I mean, he wasn’t bouncing on his toes, but it was *implied*. I half expected him to turn to Neal and say, “Can we do it again? Can we? Can we?” He was *that* happy

So glad you had a great show!

  210. Thanks you guys — I’m glad you enjoyed the caffeine-fueled recap! I’m feeling a little floaty, still, and am totally blaming it on the show, and not the fact that I’m totally sleep deprived. *g*

  211. Briefly, because I don’t know if anyone is still reading this thread

I revisit David Cook threads for days until I’m sure I haven’t missed anyone’s post!

  212. How about “Don’t Touch Monty’s Beer”? “Damn That Monty Bastard” “Dangerous Tacos Make Bacon”?

seriously, those are genius. Whatever it really stands for, I don’t care, I’m convinced it’s one of the above.

    MollyAnnMay, thank you! Great recap.

Let me tell you, when David says he can’t half-ass when he sings and even rehearses full out? He’s not lying. And that goes double for the band.

I am constantly amazed by this. The man has vocal chords of iron. He sings full on, chest voice, for over an hour 4-5 times a week for nearly a full year. And I have never heard him really complain about losing his voice, going on vocal rest, anything like that. He’ll occasionally mention being vocally tired, or needing to pace himself, cut back on the alcohol to stay in top shape vocally, etc., but he’s never in trouble with his voice. It just says to me– unlike a lot of rock singers, he actually sings correctly!

I really am blown away by the talent of this band. They’ll just riff around during soundcheck random songs they like, and next thing you know, DC’s like, let’s do this, and they fit it Hotel California to KOTN, or Champagne Supernova to Heroes. They’re not like your average band, they are all just fantastic musicians.

  213. I know what you guys mean. I just figured out, that I can’t sing correctly. I always have to yawn. Seriously.I.yawn. Which it doesn’t matter because I only sing when I’m alone. Because my voice is *that* bad. My Dad had a horrible voice and I inherited it. My memories of childhood is my Dad singing 70’s and 80’s music off-key(and he still does) and then sighing and saying how he wished he could sing.

  214. MollyAnnMay, if you were to keep writing that recap and I could keep reading it for, like, ever, that would be fine with me. Love.

  215. MollyAnnMay, thanks for the awesome recap. I’ve only been to 2 Cook shows live, but I know exactly how you feel.

  216. thanks MollyAnnMay for sharing your appreciation of a great concert. Those photos and vids of Dave and the band sure made my day.

  217. MollyAnnMay, come back (to me) and tell me more about the retriever! Loved that recap. :-)

Been busy today, but can’t wait to watch all the videos tomorrow.

  218. MollyAnnMay, everything about that recap makes me want you to open a restaurant so that you can serve up that kind of awesomecake every. day.

    Whee.

  219. MollyAnnMay, since we can’t say it enough, that is seriously one of the most entertaining recaps I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. Especially love this:

with his eyes lit up like a retriever about to jump in a lake for the hundredth time, simply because jumping in a lake is *the most awesome thing in the world*.

    Awww. *squishes recap*

does anyone else think You and I could be about David and his fans, and the often temporary nature of fame. Maybe his trepidation about continued success? The kings (if that is the lyric) maybe a reference to the Midwest Kings?

Nice! I can totally see that. I mentioned a similar trepidation about embarking on the next stage of his career interpretation re: Make Believe when it first popped up, too, which makes me wonder if that’s going to be a subtle underlying theme running throughout DCTR 2: Anthemic Boogaloo.

My memories of childhood is my Dad singing 70’s and 80’s music off-key(and he still does) and then sighing and saying how he wished he could sing.

Hee, I love off key singing dads. Apparently when I was a baby, the only thing that would quiet me down was my dad singing The Doors or The Talking Heads. Badly I might add.

  220. Thanks so much first to SERIOUSLY for the time consuming banter transcript and to MollyAnnMay for an awesome recap!! Haven’t seen all the videos yet but can’t get over how hot Cookie looked last night!

  221. Hee, I love off key singing dads

When I was a youngin’, my Dad used to intentionally sing badly to all the songs my sisters and I were listening to,and he would do it in public ! His favorite to cover was Roxanne. He would wail
“Rooooooxanne, you don’t have to put on the red light” at the top of his lungs. My sisters ,who were already teenagers, would do that
teenager eye-roll and I would laugh and join him.
Seriously,( I mean the person ), are you a court reporter in RL ?
That transcript is amazing! By the way, your signature photo on DCO
is from one of the two DCTA shows I was able to attend; Table Mountain Casino in Friant. Were you there, too?

  222. MollyAnnMay, i had to delurk to tell you what an amazing recap that is. And if you want to tell us a lot more details, we wouldn’t mind much. *bats eyes*

Thanks to everybody for all the video and recaps, and to Seriously for the transcript.

    Yay!

  223. Molly is the best recap writer ever. I stand in awe of her greatness. :)

  224. My Dad said to get me to sleep he would put me in the car in the middle of the night, and drive around our neighborhood. While singing Earth, Wind, and Fire. True story.

Seriously,( I mean the person ), are you a court reporter in RL ?

Nope. I’m a genealogist, I just transcribe documents. So just old handwriting, and not audio. Heh.

By the way, your signature photo on DCO
is from one of the two DCTA shows I was able to attend; Table Mountain Casino in Friant. Were you there, too?

Nope again. I wasn’t there, but I love Neal’s stupid face. LOVE IT.

  225. DCTR 2: Anthemic Boogaloo

Bwah! I am totally calling it that from now on.

  226. I love Earth, Wind and Fire ! They’re kind of like the E st. band;
there’s so many people onstage playing the same instrument !

  227. MollyAnnMay, if you were to keep writing that recap and I could keep reading it for, like, ever, that would be fine with me. Love.

This. That was the best recap ever. Talking about awesomesauce! That was just *swimming* in it!

I keep checking back on David Cook threads, too. There are often more goodies just waiting ;)

    He would wail
“Rooooooxanne, you don’t have to put on the red light” at the top of his lungs.

Haha, mine too! It must be accompanied by eyeroll.

I hope he keeps on embracing that forehead. Because he’s smokin’ hot right about now. If I walked into that restaurant in Charlottesville and he looked like THAT? I wouldn’t have lost the power of speech (which I did, it was stoopid) – I would be dead. Dead, I tell you.

  228. Awesome recap MollyAnn. Just read another good recap on another board. This one had a funny insight about the fart banter.

So this recapper was standing near some really young hot girls wearing skimpy outfits and supposedly David could not keep his eyes off them all night. So he did his banter about seeing familiar faces in the crowd and he asked if there were any first time concert goers and that is when one of the young things pointed out her other good looking friend. And supposedly Dave like ran over to them and started in on his fart banter. I haven’t seen that video yet but I did read the loverly transcript. Can anyone confirm he ran over? I bet he sauntered. Yeah that’s it. Sounds cooler.

  229. Garnetstar, he didn’t run over to anyone during the course of the show; the stage was elevated and set back from the chairs by a few feet.

And apparently security was keeping people from getting very close to the barriers.

If the audience part is true, though, that is such a fratboy thing to do. “Hot chicks! Must…make…fart jokes!”

  230. I haven’t seen that video yet but I did read the loverly transcript. Can anyone confirm he ran over? I bet he sauntered. Yeah that’s it. Sounds cooler.

    Judge for yourself:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XmSVqNURomE

He didn’t actually move from the mike stand at all during that part of the banter exchange, but it looked like maybe he was kinda looking in that direction for a while? And he walked that way when introducing Andy, and then in the middle of KOTN when he was talking, he walked over there as well, then he also wished someone a happy birthday in that direction. I dunno, it’s hard to tell these things. He may have been paying extra attention to that side, or I may be noticing because I’m looking for something now. Who knows =P.

  231. Wow, thank you for the nice comments! I would have said so sooner but I left to watch some videos — and nap. zomg I’m so tired. Adrenaline hangovers are brutal.

Anyway, a few more comments: Garnetstar, I was too far back to see what inspired the banter you’re talking about, but I do think “sauntered over” is a better description than “ran over” — at least for when he started talking. But by the end he was back peddling madly “sauntering” the other way, over to Neal with this sort of, “Save me from myself, why am I still talking? And why do I keep saying the word ‘fart?'” look on his face that was too funny for words. He couldn’t start the next song fast enough. Heh. (Or now that I look at the video, I guess his feet didn’t move all that much — but the body turn and eye contact to Neal at the end was still funny.)

Something I noted from watching the videos is that camera mics *suck*. Don’t get me wrong, I am soooo grateful for the people who take the videos, because I could never do it myself and I would never have fallen so hard for this band without them, but it is really interesting how different the band sounds in person, and how the quality of David’s voice, in particular, just doesn’t come through on those tinny mics.

For one thing, I sometimes hear David *seem* to go slightly flat or sharp in the videos but live that just didn’t happen — he was bang on key the whole night. I also rarely hear Kyle in videos, but he was clear as could be live. Kyle’s and Andy’s harmonies are critical for the vocals on so many songs, but where the live mixes are beautifully balanced, you rarely get that in a video. The only off mix I heard last night was in “You and I.” Those of you who thought the piano needed to be integrated better — it sounded even more out of step live. Don’t get me wrong — I liked it! It added a really interesting texture to the familiar band sound, not just in melody but in rhythm. And I have faith they’ll pull it together eventually.

I was blocked from seeing much of Andy, which made me sad, but I got to see a lot of Neal, and I was intrigued by how fully *committed* he was to every song. He played as hard and was as fully engaged on CBTM as he was on KOTN (which made me think, now *that’s* a pro — because I always want to take a cigarette break during CBTM and I don’t even smoke).

And that was typical of the whole band. How many times have they played these songs? And yet, not one song got a perfunctory performance. Everyone on stage was fully engaged at every moment — I think that’s why the audience gets so drawn in. Of course they do have more sheer fun on some songs than others — the one time I did get a good look at Andy was for his and Neal’s simultaneous head banging on BBS. I swear, if they ever approve Synchronized Headbanging as a sport at the Olympics, these guys would win the gold medal heads hands down. Even the Russian judge would have to give it a 5.9.

I think that blissful submersion in the music — which they all do — is why the end of Make Believe is my favorite part of it, as is the end of IDIFY. And you can see the same thing on Barracuda — they went all DMB jam on the end of that and just didn’t want to stop.

Last musical notes: 1) The falsetto transition in Lie was gorgeous and more pure than I’ve heard it in a long time. That was the one part of the song he backed off of during soundcheck, but during the performance it was a total wow moment. And 2) when the red Firebird made its first appearance I honestly gasped out loud. Instant lust. That is one seriously sexy guitar.

Speaking of lust Um. For one last paddle in my favorite end of the pool, I mentioned how hot Dave looked but I noticed something else about the videos — they don’t do him justice. I spent one whole song looking from Live!Dave to InstaVid!Dave on the big screens on either side of the stage — purely for scientific comparison purposes, you understand — and even in those larger than life screens, he looked… I don’t know — flatter? Or something. Live!Dave just *pops* visually, but that doesn’t come across in pixels. It’s probably just as well I didn’t go to any meeting/greeting thing after (if they had one — I have no idea) or I’d be dead and it would be my ghost writing this.

In conclusion, LOL sunchick, if the next record isn’t called DCTR2: Anthemic Bugaloo, I will be so, so sad.

  232. LOL spritely, I just clicked away and clicked back and almost fell over at all that yammering. I think I’ve used up my word quota till… well, the next show, hopefully!

  233. Thank for more recap MollyAnnMay, you are really the next best thing to being there!

Oh, and I completely agree with you on Dave’s voice live versus on youtubes. The nuances and textures get lost. Even the album tracks don’t do it justice. He’s just an amazing live performer.

  234. progression, so true! And also true that I’m hardly the first person to make this amazing discovery — it’s not like people haven’t been talking about having exactly the same experience for over a year. But it’s one thing to read it and think, well yes, that sounds like it would be true, and another to *hear* the stark difference from one day to the next. It didn’t hit me so hard after the SD show because I was sitting closer to one of the speakers and the sound for me at the Spreckles was much more distorted, so I didn’t mind the videos. Last night I lucked into a real aural sweet spot.

Why can’t we have a live album y’all? Why? Why? ::cries::

  235. I agree with everyone about the difference in hearing the show live from the YouTube versions except I noticed it more with the music. They added so much to the live versions of the DCTR tracks and that doesn’t always come through in the vids. Neal’s guitar playing in itself is it’s own song. I did see one vid , though, from a summer stop where the videographer was directly in front of Neal. They were playing Souvenir and his/her camera mike was picking up his guitar and drowning out just about all the other instruments and singing, but it was like hearing a new song.He was making all these little interesting noises I hadn’t heard before. I checked other tour stop videos to see if it was just that night, but there they were ! Ijust hadn’t heard them before. Same thing with the music in Anodyne; the camera mikes really don’t pick up the beauty of it.

  236. I finished my previous post in order to not miss the end of the Olympic ceremony. I just wanted to add that when you hear David’s voice live, you really hear “all his voices”. The rough, the falsetto, the growl, the moan in KOTN, they all sound completely
different live; crisper if that makes sense.

  237. So, in light of the emancipated forehead situation and the resulting hottness, I feel like I should eulogize the locktopus or something. You know, seeing as how he’s missing and presumed restyled, and I loved him in my own way. *sniff*

    ~clears throat~

Oh sweaty tendrils, misunderstood remnants o’ grungy days of yore.
Wind was not your friend, nor rain, nor any inclement weather, really. But especially wind.
Remember that time that you showed up all all highlighted and bedheadish and spikey? That was awesome. <3
(We won't, however, mention the This Is It premiere.)
Farewell, you old unpredictable 'do you, and enjoy your vacay.
You can take my heart- call it a souvenir.

    (awwwww, tear)

  238. MollyAnnMay, thank you for such detailed and entertaining recaps. As a dog-lover, I find your retriever imagery particularly intriguing. Heh!

    offside:

I did see one vid , though, from a summer stop where the videographer was directly in front of Neal. They were playing Souvenir and his/her camera mike was picking up his guitar and drowning out just about all the other instruments and singing, but it was like hearing a new song.

Was it, by any chance, this video? If so, that’s mine. I recorded the whole show in Fargo from right in front of Neal’s monitor, and his guitar and Kyle’s drums are very prominent as a result. I didn’t notice it during the show, but was a little bummed about the sound on the videos after the fact.

Also, based on some earlier comments here (I can’t remember who, I’m sorry) and elsewhere, FoolsApril64 at DCO and I have revised the lyrics for You and I that I posted yesterday. Here are our latest thoughts, with uncertainties in [ ]:

    the day has just begun;
the ocean’s all but won and pulled us under
    [the wave is looming close];
let’s erase the world we know and draw another
with what we love; ’cause what we have is not enough tonight
so tell me you believe in the world that we can’t see
we can’t help but wonder … we can’t help but wonder

just you and I, do or die
as the sun burns everything that’s in [her] eyes
so take my hand, take a stand
‘cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    you and I …
    you and I

when all the kings grow old
and the stars are turning cold; we [fight] this misery
    we’re running out of years
just scream loud and give three cheers, to one last memory … memory

just you and I, do or die
as the sun burns everything that’s in [her] eyes
so take my hand, take a stand
‘cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    you and I …
    you and I

you and I … do or die …
Say farewell … one last time …

just you and I, do or die
as the sun burns everything that’s in [her] eyes
so take my hand, take a stand
‘cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again …

just you and I, do or die
as the sun burns everything that’s in [her] eyes
so take my hand, take a stand
‘cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    you and I …

After a couple of people brought it up, I’m now thinking that “her eyes” could be “our eyes”; it just makes more sense as the rest of the song uses 1st person pronouns. Also, I’m now hearing “we rewrite this misery” instead of “we fight this misery”, though I seem to be the only one with that thought so far.

Oh, and for those that expressed concern over the “U and I” spelling from Dave’s tweet, someone posted a picture of the setlist and the song title is printed as “You and I” on that. Whew!

  239. this guy is the magic disappearing Idol. Seriously, he is heading the way of Taylor Hicks which is sad because he is seemingly much more relevant. What has happened to him? He is playing cheesy tiny resorts already? man…

  240. Ugh, everytime someone posts different lyrics, I hear it that way!
    I’m glad it’s “You and I” instead of U and I”.
One day later, I still feel the exact way about it as I did yesterday; I like the verses and bridge, the chorus, not so much.
A question to everyone who finds the piano too tingly-
Would you feel differently about it if it were an octave lower?
That would certainly make it less prominent, wouldn’t it ?
MollyAnnMay, no that wasn’t the video (in your vid I can hear the other band members.) Maybe it was from the same show, though. If I find it, I’ll link it here.

  241. He is playing cheesy tiny resorts already?

Hate to tell you this JB1 but a lot of BIG artists play “cheesy tiny resorts”.

  242. I’m glad it’s “You and I” instead of U and I”.

    Wait, what have you heard?

A question to everyone who finds the piano too tingly-
Would you feel differently about it if it were an octave lower?
That would certainly make it less prominent, wouldn’t it ?

I think an octave lower would definitely sound better. I liked the piano accompaniment, and usually like piano to be prominent but in this case it was just a bit too tinkly and consequently, almost jarring.

  243. smallie, on the setlist, it read “You and I “.Also, Along4TheRide
posted a picture of it on the previous page, but I can’t figure out how to link her/his link !

I also directed a post on the previous page to the wrong person; I apologize, Along4TheRide, it was you who linked the video of Souvenir for me.

  244. No worries, offside. I’m glad that you can hear other band members in my video from Fargo, because I have to strain to hear David, which is a bummer for me since that was the only show at which I saw Souvenir. (BTW, I’m a “her”. But thanks for not assuming.)

  245. When David Hodges twittered after David played it he called it U and I.

  246. smallie, on the setlist, it read “You and I “.

When David Hodges twittered after David played it he called it U and I.

I’m crossing my fingers that the setlist is correct… and that the guys were just using Twitter/text-speak… but the fact that both of them tweeted “U and I” makes me worry. I’ll be okay with it regardless, but I just think the “U” belongs to younger pop songs with long/wordy titles. Not the best suited for a short title to a rock song like You and I/U and I…

  247. Orrrrr they could just bypass the U vs You thing and rename it Do or Die.

Re: lyrics….I’m still on team wave, and I think its “our eyes” also.

  248. If anyone is still here, can someone repost the 2nd, supposedly better version MP3 link of You & I? I know it’s in here, but buried and I can’t find it. Thanks.

Random thought on DC concert soundmix… I went to a Kelly Clarkson concert earlier this year, and my friend recorded some live tracks that I’ve put on my ipod. Her vocals on these DIY live tracks and at the show were really forefront. I know DC isn’t a pop star, and his are rock shows, but Kelly has something crazy like an 8-piece band, and they are fantastic, and the concert and the music, though poppy, still really rocked. Even on her guitar-heavy upbeat numbers like Since U Been Gone, MLWSWY, etc, her voice really soars. I kind of wish sometimes that they would mix DC’s shows so that the vocals are a little more in the front and less drowned out by the band. The Anthemic is incredible, but so are David’s vocals, and he shouldn’t always sound like he’s competing to be heard above the band. Lie is always a concert standout because you can hear his vocals better, but even on the more rockin’ songs, can’t we put DC’s vocals up front?

  249. sunchick, I bow down before your awesomeness. That Ode to the Locktopus was genius. David’s a beautiful man, but at times the swirly tendrils during a sweaty performance have gotten a little too close to the noodly appendages of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. Nonetheless, I thought the Locktopus was owed a fitting memorial, which you provided. Long live the new ‘do.

    Also, thank you, David’s Trainer.

  250. Awesome videos, thanks for posting those mj and to the person who took the videos. David looks fantastic! The hair, the vest the belt! Gaaaahhhh! Yes, yes! thanks to DC trainer also.

  251. Hey, where’s Monty’s blue shirt and vest? Did he not get the memo?

  252. Thanks everyone for the videos and recaps. I think I love the new song now after (mumble) listens. I wouldn’t know a hit song before it’s a hit. I just know what I like. He looks so good, and happy.

  253. Thanks guys. It came from the heart. ;)

Sorry to post ho, but new lyrics! will do this to me every time. Anyway, last thought before it’s back to the grindstone, I’ve been mulling over the idea that underdoc2 threw out there, and I’ve decided that You (U) and I= Dave and his merry band of musical men. To me, Make Believe seems like it’s addressed to the world at large (all that I am, is in the palm of your hand, so make believe that you give a damn) while You and I is like a rallying cry to his troops go out there and kick some more ass (take my hand, take a stand, cuz there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again.) No wonder it’s one of his favorites. I am now even more stoked for DCTR 2: Anthemic Boogaloo. If that’s possible. Okay, carry on.

ROTFLMAO. I’ve missed your comments, Sybil. It’s now clear: David has been doing the “unassuming savior” thing, hiding behind that hideous tragic hair. As somebody who has, at times, gotten irrational about it (as in Why, Why, WHY are you hiding behind that horrific, stringy mop???), I now understand that David was doing us all a big favor. Channeling Jack Nickelson here: You want the forehead? You can’t handle the forehead!

    No, sir, no, I cannot.

And, sunchick, well, you just rock. But you already knew that! :-)

ETA: Here’s a link to the original Aaron Sorkin dialogue from A Few Good Men. I’m sure sunchick or maturin or Sybil can do it justice. I bow to you all.

Sunchick, I Flove this early interpretation. I think we have a winner. Please continue to bless us with your insights (and humor).

  256. LOL and Brava Sunchick! And RIP Locktopus. I’d say we hardly knew ye, but we knew ye a little too well, frankly. I thought you’d be sticking around forever (pun totally intended). And yes BootStar, I’m not sure I can handle the forehead either, but I’m determined to soldier on.

offside, I wanted to comment on your post about all of David’s different voices — the falsetto, the growl, etc. As we were walking out last night, I heard a man in front of me say something like, “It was great to hear the gruff voice he had on the show that I liked so much. I miss that on the record.” It’s so true and so bizarre to me that what overproduction does is not build up sound, but muddy it. I loved all of David’s voices and all the top to bottom parts of the music I got to hear last night. What a treat. It always amazes me how much *music* U2, for example, can wring out of 3 instruments and a couple voices in concert, and no, I’m not comparing DCATA to U2. But good musicians *make music* and it’s not just a camera mic problem — I am hoping whoever produces DCTR2: AB will get out of the guys’ way and let them do it.

Speaking of the band, my friend M has now decided that when he wins the lottery he is going to make the band an offer they can’t refuse and steal them from David so M can form his own vanity band with the Anthemic. The only problem with this scheme is that M now totally wants to be Dave’s BFF too. (M is trying to be nonchalant about this, but I know allllll the signs).

M: Maybe Dave could hang out on weekends with me and the band. I could pay him to sing harmonies and tell bad jokes.

Me: I was dubious till you mentioned the bad jokes. You just might be able to swing that.

  257. That is too cute. Does your friend know about MWK, and how David already does sing harmonies on another band with most of The Anthemic?

    sunchick, I like your interpretation!

  258. hey there MollyAnnMay just have to say how much I agree with your second long-ish post. Dave’s voice is so amazing. What a fine live performer. And your observations about the band are spot-on. They never do a show in a perfunctory way, tho I’m sure some shows have been better than others. They are not only true pros, but have such an obvious love of what they’re doing that it makes the audience love it more. Sigh – I am torn between wanting DCT2:Anthemic Boogaloo right now, and wanting them to have plenty of time to woodshed it and make it the best it can be.

cause it is about the music you know and not about how beautiful Cookie looked

  259. I miss the exhilaration of live shows… these guys really are just electric. *Sniff*

But since I couldn’t go, I will console myself with funny, witty recaps and great YouTubes that I can’t stop watching… (When I can tear my eyes from Mr. Cook – I still think Monty is adorable and Andy has such pretty Prell hair, lol)

  260. sma11ie, M has yet to hear MWK in its recorded form — he’d only heard DC’s singles before the concert. But never fear, he’s about to get inundated with CDBaby and iTunes links. *g* I didn’t play anything DC/MWK related on the drive over to Morongo, as he wasn’t that interested *then* — on the way back we played DCTR1, Analog Heart and a compilation of tour mp3s and he wants all of them. In fact, I thought I was going to have to wrestle him for my copies when I dropped him off.

wellhesback: cause it is about the music you know and not about how beautiful Cookie looked

    Oh yes, of course.

    …No, really.

tierbee, I’m with you. It was one thing for a show to end during the Neverending Tour because there would always be another one so soon. Now what are we going to dooooo? They need to find a club in town where they can shake out new material. They can keep it on the down low, just as long as all of us know about it. I’m sure we can be discreet. *cough*

  261. Wonder how long it will be till Cookie and those guys play live again? Will need group hugs…

  262. They need to find a club in town where they can shake out new material. They can keep it on the down low, just as long as all of us know about it. I’m sure we can be discreet. *cough*

Haha, definitely! If he vanishes for too long I will for sure need a big, massive group hug.

And I can be discreet – wouldn’t want to let the cat out of the bag and have it sell out before I can get tickets, hee!

  263. Aw, he looks great with the short haircut, I love it. And I love the twitter pic they did for us, so cute. What a great group of guys. Very cool. I love the new song … and the direction they seem to be headed with the next cd. I really can’t wait. Wow.

Here’s the 2nd version from the Cookistas.

    sunchick:

Re: lyrics….I’m still on team wave, and I think its “our eyes” also.

I’m on the same page, sunchick. I just posted some revised lyric thoughts in the Lyric thread at DCO, and wanted to bring my thoughts here, too.

You and I [ Note: as sung on 2/27 ]
    (David Cook/David Hodges)

The day has just begun; the ocean’s all but won and pulled us under
The wave is looming close; let’s erase the world we know and draw another
with what we love; ’cause what we have is not enough tonight
So tell me you believe in the world that we can’t see
We can’t help but wonder … we can’t help but wonder

Just you and I, do or die
as the sun burns everything that’s in our eyes
So take my hand, take a stand
‘cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    You and I …
    You and I

When all the kids grow old
and the stars are turning cold; we rewrite this misery
    We’re running out of years
just scream loud and give three cheers, for one last memory … memory

Just you and I, do or die
as the sun burns everything that’s in our eyes
So take my hand, take a stand
‘cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    You and I …
    You and I

You and I … do or die …
Say farewell … one last time …

Just you and I, do or die
as the sun burns everything that’s in our eyes
So take my hand, take a stand
‘cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again

Just you and I, do or die
as the sun burns everything that’s in our eyes
So take my hand, take a stand
‘cause there’s nothing left to stop our dreams again
    You and I …

My thought process on the few changes I made is this: I envision a couple reaching the end of a life-stage – perhaps “empty nest” era, perhaps retirement, perhaps even later. They’ve had a hard go of it until now, but instead of just laying down and letting life and the world take them out without a fight, they stand up and decide to be proactive, to change their life circumstances and turn things around.

the ocean’s all but won and pulled us under
The wave is looming close; let’s erase the world we know and draw another

When all the kids grow old and the stars are turning cold; we rewrite this misery

Both of these lines reflect this for me. The wave is about to wipe out their current existence; kids growing old is the end of a life-stage; stars turning cold is the end of a life-cycle. The ends of each line indicate that they are deciding to take charge and change the rough things in their past, turning over a new leaf and starting over.

I’ve seen comments (DCO and maybe here, I think) that they could see this as a soundtrack song. I can totally see that, especially with the vision of the song that I now have. I can also see it relate to many of Dave’s fans. There have been many stories of people who were in a bad place before Dave came along, and his music has helped them find a new lease on life, so to speak.

Reading through comments above, I can also see sunchick’s interpretation. Basically it’s still all about taking charge of your life and turning it around for the better.

Of course, I typically suck at lyrical analysis, so take this all with a grain of salt and feel free to contradict and offer alternatives. *textual grin*

    One last thing…
    MollyAnnMay:

sma11ie, M has yet to hear MWK in its recorded form — he’d only heard DC’s singles before the concert.

Love to hear this! Thanks for sharing M’s perspectives.

  265. Kids growing old makes more sense to me than kings.I keep hearing
We’re running out of years to scream loud and give
three cheers for one last memory. I know that probably doesn’t make
sense, but it just sounds that way to me.

  266. Along4theride, I think your interpretation is awesome, and also that my interpretation and your interpretation aren’t mutually exclusive. One aspect of David’s writing that I really dig is that he seems to take inspiration from something pretty specific and personal to him, and then kind of pulls the universal truth out of that particular experience or feeling or state of mind and writes about it in a way that people can get what they want out of the lyrics. Was it the Slezak interview where he said that he thinks it cool when he writes a song with X in mind and then someone comes up to him and tells him they got something slightly different out of it, because that means that he wrote a song that’s more universally relatable? I think Permanent was the most plain and frank he’s ever been in his songwriting and it really was the type of song that needed to be that way. Otherwise I like the way he plays around with words to get the right vibe for what he wants to convey without being too specific.

So basically, even if it’s kings and not kids, your interpretation still works. On one hand using the word kings would be like a sneaky little easter egg of a shout out to his MWK boys who maybe inspired the song, on the other hand, all the kings grow old=all of our idols/important people in our life grow old.

  267. Wellhesback, Thank You for that! I keep checking back into this thread, and finding new things.

I saw the speculation about Slezak’s reaction to “Barracuda” – and wondering if he knew – so it was also fun to see his tweet –

    >>When Idols rock out together, everyone wins. Well played, @thedavidcook and @CarlySmithson! http://bit.ly/bG5TtQ

  268. Thanks for the link to that interview, wellhesback. I love the way he says “awesome”! Does anyone know who the interviewer was?
I love the way you all analyze the lyrics. I’m not that talented, but I do like to know exactly what they are and enjoy their poeticness( is that a word?)

  269. offside, it was actually Fred Bronson. He talks about it on his Twitter timeline.

@thedavidcook Great to see you tonight and thanks for the interview for IdolsNow. This was my 1st full David Cook show & I loved it.

  270. Thanks, Standtotheright, no wonder he had so much back story for the questions! His twitter timeline was full of nice things about David – cool. Appreciate the correction.

  271. Thank You as well, standtotheright !
It’s funny, when I began to listen to the interview, I hadn’t caught the title, and 3 minutes into the interview I was thinking “another interview of all Idol questions !”
