David Cook on His Way to Ethiopa, Album This Summer, Single in April

*UPDATE: David’s performance of  “Jumpin Jack Flash” from last night’s Top 12 results show is now available on iTunes – HERE.*

David Cook was interviewed by Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS FM radio show this morning.  David will be going to Ethiopia, Africa for Idol Gives Back.

David Cook – Ryan Seacrest

David is busy writing and recording a new album that he hopes to release this summer, with a brand new single coming out in April.

Last night American Idol results show featured a very hot cover of the Rolling Stone’s “Jumpin’ Jack Flash”.  It should be available for download from iTunes sometime today.

  1. Thanks for the thread MJ! (Considering how good he looked last night, it may be the first without Cookie hair snark/angst) Happy that DC will be involved with Idol Gives Back. Love that boy and his band.

  2. All good news. It’s a happy day in Cookville. Wait! There’s one more thing, for tonight!

Doing a KIIS FM interview 2nite from the @ificandream house.Tune in at 9PM PDT at http://iicd.tv/1A2 you can tweet me live using #iicdhouse.

  3. thanks for the interview MJ — David is definitely a class act plus his performance of JJF was all kinds of HOT!!

  4. I consider myself one of the leading hair snarkers in the fandom, and yet I was very happy with the hair last night. I’m delighted that he’s finally liberated his forehead. It’s beautiful.

  5. Thank you for posting this MJ! I tried to listen live but damn, KIIS plays some ridiculously bad music don’t they?

He said they’re sending “us” to Ethiopia. Do we think that means the whole band will go, or by us does he just mean he and the AI team?

  6. LOL, was Ryan proposing to him? Does he want to have “little Cooks” with David?

  7. I am excited for him that he gets to go to Africa. And I am loving that he embraced the forehead :)

  8. Did he really say “The Powers That Be?”. He does read these boards I knew it! LOL

  9. “The Powers That Be” line cracked me up. I wonder if they had something to do with the haircut. LOL

  10. Following today’s fast and furious tweets, it appears that David will be going as part of the UN Foundation:

@unfoundation: The #Idol love continues: @thedavidcook will be joining us on a trip to Africa this month!

  11. His using the term “they” when talking about his losing weight definitely tells me that 19 or the label execs really talked him into going the whole personal trainer/diet route — probably much like they did with him and Twitter — to great results! But it’s kinda funny how he let that one slip. Hee.

  12. I can’t believe there will be a single in April. Dang. He works pretty fast.

  13. Did he really say “The Powers That Be?”. He does read these boards I knew it! LOL

I was wondering the same thing, but that’s a pretty common term, isn’t it? Nah, never mind. I like the idea that he reads the boards better!

Was it old news that he’d bought a house in the Hollywood Hills? I’m kind of a bad Cook fan these days, so I could just be out of the loop. And I’d love to know what places he frequents that he worries about be spotted as the ‘American Idol.’

  14. The new LA place is news to me too, BootStar. Also, I’ve heard Andrew use that term, The Powers That Be, multiple times before, on his own radio show, etc. Andrew always seems like he followed the show really closely on the web. And of course, DC definitely knows it. He has said he peeked at the internet responses during the competition. He or Andrew would’ve come across that term easily back then.

He said they’re sending “us” to Ethiopia. Do we think that means the whole band will go, or by us does he just mean he and the AI team?

That’s the big question. I’m sure we’re find out soon enough. Sounds like they’re leaving soon…? Actually, that’s my big question– do we have a timeframe for the trip? I’m thinking ASAP, but I wonder how they have to prep before leaving.

Funny that DC hasn’t seen the ice dancing to Billie Jean, even though fans tweeted him about it like crazy, but he got so excited on Twitter that they used Heroes for the Bode Miller montage. Not a fan of the ice dancing, are we, DC =P.

Why am I not surprised that DC cried during the Annie Lennox performance on IGB? I did too, that was amazing. I remember he also cried on Idol when they showed that clip of the two sisters finding each other… he’s gonna be a big puddle in Ethiopia.

  15. I remember he also cried on Idol when they showed that clip of the two sisters finding each other… he’s gonna be a big puddle in Ethiopia.

Heh, the first thing my sister said when I told her he was going to Africa was… “He’s gonna cry.”

Of course he’s gonna cry! And then I’m going to love him even more :)

  16. He found out about the dance during the US Championship and congratulated them, but I’m not sure he knew about them using it again during the Olympics.

I’m so happy with GLEE every time I see him. Too bad he couldn’t be on AI every week to show the new crew how to perform a song and make it your own. Yep, it as a ‘blast’ blast’ blast’. Great job by Cookie and the band.

  17. Well – all I needed this morning was one stolen Youtube moment with Mr Cook and I have had that song – JJF – in my head all day: and I don’t even like it…

But Mr Cook looked rather fantastic – and very slender! – and there was full on footage of the band too!!!

    Exciting!

    Can’t wait for IGB.

  18. Funny that DC hasn’t seen the ice dancing to Billie Jean, even though fans tweeted him about it like crazy, but he got so excited on Twitter that they used Heroes for the Bode Miller montage. Not a fan of the ice dancing, are we, DC =P.

Well, he wrote the latter and not the former. Bit more validating.

And also renumerative: Songwriters can get very nice synch royalties for TV usage; performers might get something from the master license fee paid to the label, but I don’t think it’s that much.

  19. Just got a chance to actually listen to the interview. Short but very sweet. Good to hear Cookie’s voice.

  20. I finally got to listen to the rest of the interview – always happy to hear that voice :)

  21. I almost laughed with TBTB reference too. He SO reads these boards. heh

Loved the interview. Yep, there is no way Dave will make that trip without getting emotional. That’s why I love him.

  22. Yes, David is truly a class act! He is the AMERICAN IDOL as far as I’m concerned. I am so looking forward to his next album, another tour and seeing him do promotions. He is looking mighty fine these days. Yes, he will cry in Ethopia. He is such a tender soft-hearted soul. You can’t but like him.

  23. btw, to find JJF on i-tunes, do a search by typing “American Idol” and you should see it in the upper right hand corner.

Just giving a heads up until MJ gets the link up. :)

  24. I’m just happy that he’s looking good and we’re getting to see and hear so much from him during this down time. His reaction to the “little Cooks” reference was hysterical! Definitely not ready to settle down yet.

His performance from last night is up on the iTunes American Idol home page. Just click the AI Top 12 button on the iTunes front page.

  25. Dave Cook and band’s version of Jumpin’ Jack Flash on iTunes is a gas, gas, gas!!! Turn up the speakers loud! Man, the song rawks!

  26. Awww, I loved that bit at the end when Ryan said how the Idol staff still hold Cook in such high regard. Not a bridge burner, that one.

So, I’m wondering if spiffy new haircut + PTB mandated trainer= maybe with the next tour we’ll finally get that live concert vid deluxe album stuff that we wanted with DCTR1? You know, with the new emphasis on the visuals and stuff. It’s a dream that never dies.

LOL, was Ryan proposing to him? Does he want to have “little Cooks” with David?

Well, Ry Ry is on the rebound after Simon broke up with him last night. And he’s obvs been eyeballing the new hottness in the gym.

  27. I guess he had to give up the Missouri dream for a while. Better for him to be in L.A. anyway, it’s where all the music and show business stuffs are.

You know that’s got to be fun to have a recording studio in the house. Bet they have fun with that.

He has been going pretty much non-stop since the tour ended. Flying all over the world writing songs & now to Africa for Idol. Whew, makes me tired thinking about it.

  28. I think it was news that he now owns a house in LA. He had been renting there. He still owns the place in Missouri as well. I think it makes alot of sense, since he has to spend so much time there. Sharing the place with Andrew and Neal is also probably great, for all of them.

  29. Yeah, I think the owning a house in LA was new news. It makes it nice that he has a place to stay since he has to commute back and forth so much.

  30. Do you guys remember yesterday I said if Cookie did well( even though I’m not a fan) I would buy another one of his songs? I didn’t like the sane but he sounded good last night. So, I checked out his album again. My biggest problem with it is that toucan hear his voice over the music. So I listened to it, and I like permanent, so yeah, I bought it.Thanks for the suggetions yesterday.I also bought Archie’s A Thousand Miles even though I already own the original…

  31. Based on my haphazard participation in that other world known as Twitter, I think Andy Skib has moved out of La Casa Cook and the only other humans living with Cook are Neal Tiemann and Andrew Cook. But the bit about him buying a house in the Hollywood Hills is definitely new.

  32. luv, thanks for giving Cook a chance! Permanent is an amazing song. I think on the next album his vocals will be more prominant. Maybe you should check it out later!

  33. That was a good little interview. I thought David had said in an interview before the Pechanga show that one of his New Year’s goals was to get into better shape, and also the RFH, so I’m hoping it was his decision to start taking better care of himself and not “those”PTB, because I think that would be cruddy of them.
He doesn’t sound too thrilled about having to live in LA. Neal obviously had to move also, and Andy and Kyle live there, too, so I would say definetely a necessity for him ( did Monty move, too?)
He’ll make an inspiring appearance in Ethiopia, for sure.

  34. You know that’s got to be fun to have a recording studio in the house. Bet they have fun with that.

Hopefully some good stuff comes from that!

  35. As far as I know what the boys living arrangements are, I think Andy moved out and got a place with his girlfriend, Kyle is from Orange County anyway, and likely has a place with his wife and son. I saw Monty twitter about finding a rental in LA not too long ago, so that takes care of everyone, I think. Neal and Andrew obviously living with David.

AS for tptb getting him a trainer, I don’t take that as they forced him to, as he has said he’d like to get in better shape before, for both Race for Hope purposes, and concert stamina reasons. He was pretty out of breath last night after just one song, lol.

  36. Monty tweeted a pic of a parking ticket and said he was contributing to the tax base in CA even though he doesn’t live there yet… So I am assuming the yet means he will be moving there. Though I shouldn’t assume :)

Luv, Permanent is one of my favorite songs. I love Lie, too, though live versions have spoiled me and I like those better.

  37. I think the song sounds really good on my Zune. I love the song and the arrangement. It is not being promoted on itunes that I can see. So we will see how it does.

  38. Luv – I am impressed at how open you are to trying new music. good for you.

re David being out of breath last night – seemed like he was just buzzed on adreneline. course he could be tire from all his travel

JJF currently 235 on itunes, if I read things right.

  39. Thanks for the link for JJF, MJ! Used it, bought it, love it! Neal’s guitar work sounds even better on the recording!

  40. so I’m hoping it was his decision to start taking better care of himself and not “those”PTB, because I think that would be cruddy of them.

Oh, I’m sure it was his decision all the way. He did it for the last Race for Hope as best he could while he was on the road, right? But since he mentioned PTB in conjunction with that particular line of questioning, sounds like they might have been helpful with/have a vested interested in Project Trainer, which in turn leads me to think of other reasons besides RFH to get in shape, like ohhhh maybe next tour, and that always leads me to think professional tour vids. :D

I’m off to buy my JJF. I don’t think I would have found it without MJ’s link. Yay!

  41. And the goodness keeps coming:

    @hodgesmusic

Just finished an unbelievable song with @thedavidcook. Our best one yet. It will suckerpunch you right in the mouth with musical goodness.

And JJF is still climbing up the iTunes charts. Currently #138 overall about 4 hours after release.

  42. It is not being promoted on itunes that I can see. So we will see how it does

There is promo for it on the main AI iTunes page.

Really loving this on MP3, now that I’m not all distracted by the hawtness. They put a nice updated edge on it with the faster tempo, and some cool vocal twists. Andy’s harmonies are great, and Neal’s guitar solo of course rocks. Great job all around. Amazing they worked this out in a day or so, they should think about doing this for a living…..

  43. I just looked at the main page and the music page did not think of the AI page. But there it is. : ) Good to see.

  44. LadyM do you think its moving at a good pace? I’m actually surprised DCTR didn’t get more of a bump today.

On the subect of the trainer, well to be quite honest I’m a firm believe in keeping fit and excercise (in fact I just started teaching pilates on weekends) so whoever initated the whole diet/trainer thing was very smart. I never had a problem with his physical appearance but I’ve often cringed at some of the foods he’s talked about eating and I think he himself would probably like to be in better shape for the next time he’s ready to tour and also the upcoming race. When he talked about being in awe of Springsteens stamina I wouldn’t be shocked if he started thinking about getting in shape around then. Sometimes you just need a push and a trainer is really an excellent way to help you especially for people with busy schedules.

  45. Hey, it looks like CBTM got a little boost. It’s in the 100s on pop. Does anyone know how close it is to gold?

  46. I love Ethiopia and I’m sure David will be overwhelmed. Poverty, yes; amazing scenery and people, definitely yes. I spent a month there due to the fact that my grandchildren are from there and I wanted to explore their roots. I am so glad Idol is doing the Idol Gives Back thing again; it’s good to see Americans doing what we do best, reaching out to others.

  47. Is anyone watching this “If I Can Dream” thing? I feel… weird… watching that. Heh. I think I’ll take one more peek at purty Cookie and go away, lol.

  48. OK, well, I hung in there long enough to hear David and Andy answer why they cut their hair. David says because he’s balding (snort), Andy because he… does it once a year. Oh, this is weird.

  49. He said they don’t have a producer for the new album yet. There will be some meetings next week.

  50. OK, I cannot lie, I’m still listening. I just can’t watch because it weirds me out. Though I peek. Looks like David and Neal are going to Ethiopia.

  51. And it’s worth listening to just to get Neal talking. However brief his answers may be. Hee!

  52. I lasted 5 minutes and couldnt listen anymore. Can those who are paying attention post anything important?

  53. It’s sorta background noise while I work but I’m catching something here and there :)

  54. Yeah, tierbee, I tuned in long enough to hear the same thing and then bailed. The whole vibe just felt so *awkward*, like a bad cocktail party. I bail on those too.

Cook looked great for the 30 seconds or so I watched though. It’s easy to make jokes about going bald when in reality you look really, really hot. *g*

Idle thoughts (not a pun, these really are idle) on the whole getting into shape thing — if TPTB mandated it because live performances will be included in the next record (which better get a deluxe version, dammit), I’ll send them a fruit basket. It’s such a treat when you get those rare videos where the visuals and sound are both good and I’m greedy and I want moar.

But I also think you’re right Trina, and the Springsteen concert sparked something. I remember two tweets from David after that: the first was “Wow.” The second, IIRC, was “I have a lot of work to do.” Looks like that’s started, yay.

I’m slow catching up on other threads, but was interested to learn that David Hodges co-wrote Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You.” I’m slowly catching up with Kelly after being pretty ignorant of her music over the last 8-9 years and I had to pick my jaw up off the floor the first time I heard that song. One of the most naked, honest songs I’ve ever heard. If Hodges had anything to do with that, I’ll be *really* interested to hear what he and David come up with.

ETA: Both Neal and Dave are going to Ethiopia.

Oh wow, that’s interesting. And Neal is talking? Will wonders never cease. *g* I only saw David and Andy. I just can’t make myself watch any more though. Maybe some hardy soul will post a transcript…

  55. And Neal is talking?

Not much – but he has talked now and then. And was answering questions about his tattoos at one point, though I couldn’t hear what he was saying. He’s so *quiet*.

It is like an awkward cocktail party. And I feel like a voyeur when I watch. Less icky when I just listen, though it is still weird. I keep turning it off and checking back. I’m sitting here in a very silent house anyway so might as well have some background noise, heh.

  56. They aren’t doing anything now, BTW, just taking pics. Not even good background noise. Someone needs to make David laugh. It would be worth listening to get the laugh.

  57. LOL, David said he’s trying to self-censor because his mom is probably watching. And Neal is having a tough time with not dropping “f” bombs. Hee.

  58. And why must Justin Gaston walk around and play his guitar?

    Beer pong, lol.

Jeez, I need to go to bed. This work is tedious and I am tired. I think I can, I think I can.

  59. OK, one last check before I go to bed and that dork Justin Gaston is still walking around playing his guitar. Hee. ‘Night, anyone who is still up ;)

  60. I’m still up, I cracked and started watching again, and I want my life back lol. BTW that Shirley Halprin really is a lucky bitch. She’s there, as she said she would. Who do we have to kill to witness an intriguing game of beer pong??

  61. I’m still up, I cracked and started watching again, and I want my life back lol.

Haha, I didn’t make it to bed yet, having formatting issues with the document I’m working on and I am saving it tomorrow and had to peek, again, at the stupid video. Please make Justin Gaston zip it :)

  62. Here’s a recap from someone on DCO who was able to watch the whole thing, kind of a highlights reel. From twinsmom:

That was the most awkward, random, fascinating thing I have ever seen. I have to get up for work in four hours but I couldn’t turn it off. That guy with the guitar was surreal-was he hoping David would start singing?Eating pizza with a fork? David sighing several times, wanting nothing more than to go home. I remember some tidbits for those who were sleeping.

    1. favorite pick-up line? David, “I’m not good at pick-up.”
    2. Neal is going to Africa with David. Andy pretends to cry.
    3. Playing drinking games by themselves to kill time.
    4. David says something and Neal answers, “I didn’t hear you because I didn’t care.”
    5. David, “Oh wait, I’m driving.” No more drinks.
    6. Twitter question: “Has fame made you lonely?” Andy says, “Absolutely.” David says no, only more isolated.
    7. David, “I write with these guys.”
    8. David wrote with S. Van Zandt
    9. Half faith, not half baked.
    10. David seemed annoyed when told to leave Andrew alone.
    11. Andy loves to eat. And to stir the pot. “Tell them about your chest tattoo.”
    12. Andy and Neal are bringing home cereal. David seems a bit embarrassed.
    13. They were sweet, worrying about bringing some pizza home to Andrew.
    14. The girl with the blue dress seemed annoyed at the beer mess and was loading the dishwasher. Universal sign telling you to go home.
    15. Neal will go back and visit again.

We have all been to these awkward parties where you don’t know anybody and you can’t wait to leave. Terrible to experience, fascinating to watch. David said several times that he felt awkward and like a nerd. He never took off his jacket-he didn’t want to stay too long. Mentioned he had to get up early tomorrow. Oh, this was great. He will NEVER do this again.

And another from OmahaCookie, some overlap, but a couple of lyric clarification that has been bugging the fandom for a year and a half, lol:

So what did we learn at the If I Can Dream House?
David did a writing session with Van Zandt
David and Neal are going to Ethiopia
    David likes La Crema wine
Neal’s chest tat is a (2?) coffins, old booze bottle w/ snake wrapped around it, but isn’t finished yet
Couldn’t hear some of the rest of the tattoo talk
Lyrics in Declaration are ”I’ll take you just the way you are”
Lyrics in Daily Anthem are “half-faith blessing”
David hasn’t moved into the house that has recording studio yet
Andy and Neal’s girlfriends also felt like stalkers but couldn’t stop watching
Neal and Andy are awesomely amusing
David had some wine but Andy did the drinking for beer pong because David was driving
    What did I miss?

If you weren’t able to watch, they took lots of group pictures at the beginning, Dave was on the phone – sounded like a short interview, they all had pizza and wine, answered twitter questions, played beer pong and spilled beer all over the kitchen, played foosball, took home leftover pizza for Andrew and cereal (missed why the cereal?)

And iicdhouse trended on Twitter basically the whole time they were there.

I couldn’t watch, as none of my browsers were compatible, but I followed along on twitter, and it seems Neal and Andy practically stole the show, they were so funny! Here is a photobucket account with screenshots of it for those who were unable to watch, like me. The overall consensus seemed to be it was highly weird/uncomfortable and entertaining all at the same time, lol. http://s295.photobucket.com/albums/mm148/CookieLover_65/David%20and%20boys%20In%20The%20House%20Twitpics/

  63. There are some good morsels to chew over from the twitter Q&A, right? *smile*

How amazing that he got to write with SVZ? We all speculated when the photos surfaced of him with David in the Brill building, but it is nice to get confirmation. *excited grin*

And I always knew it was “half-faith blessing”. No one could convince me that David would write “half baked”, lol. But I was glad to get the clarification on Declaration, because enough people were asserting that it was “I’m taken just the way you are” that I was starting to hear it that way myself, although I never doubted it was “I’ll take you” until someone said they heard it differently in the last 6 months or so. Funny how you can hear it either way, if you listen hard enough for one or the other.

Well, Kris Allen is going to be doing this same thing next week. I hope he is going to be able to bring some of his friends with him, ‘cuz that will be some seriously awkward sh*t, if he has to interact with those iicd house peeps all by himself. *shudder* I wouldn’t wish that on anyone!

  64. Here’s another from QueenJ. I know she sometimes posts here so I hope she doesn’t mind if I bring this over:

I definitely need more time to process and recall about tonight. It was a very cool but slightly bizarre experience. If I’m totally recalling something incorrectly please make the correction.

    * writing with Zac Maloy soon
    * meetings about the producer next week
    * hasn’t written a lot on his own in his downtime
*choosing Kentucky in the NCAA tourney
    * favorite Peal Jam song is GO
*runs 3 times a week and listens to Jimmy Eat World and Mae while doing so
*vlog song is called “Right Here With You” (right? I don’t want to misquote it)

If you want to see the tweets that were shown at the house look here (as opposed to the thousands that were sent, these were the ones actually selected and shown to the guys in the house): http://twitter.com/iicdhouse They didn’t answer every single one but this is a decent starting place.

And yeah, I now remember David said his favorite tour stop was KC, Andy said Baghdad and then Tulsa, Neal said Macon, GA and started to say something about a gothic church but was cut off.

They also talked about broken guitars. Neal said he had 3 (?) of his broken and all damaged headstocks like David’s. And then David said he was going to bury the guitar at his new house.

  65. MJ, thanks for posting the radio interview, and sylvanaire, thanks for the recap!

  66. I too attempted to “watch” this party. I couldn’t figure out how to listen and not watch(the window would close everytime I tried to do anything else on my computer)and ,yes, it was very awkward!
That guy with the guitar was hilariously strange.
Andy really seemed to be the most comfortable one there. He kept making these amusing little comments and playing up to the cameras in all the rooms. I gave up while they were in the kitchen playing the pong game, just too much wierdness for one night.
I also caught David sighing a few times.
I can’t think of anything that hasn’t been transcribed upthread already.

  67. That was *really* strange… and yet I kept coming back to it anyway. I was tired and annoyed with Justin Gaston and his wandering around with his guitar. Troubador? Heh. I like Andy’s snarky sense of humor and that was more Neal talkage than I’ve ever seen (though when we ended up in the same restaurant as the guys in Charlottesville Neal chatted with a fan the whole time – seems like a really friendly and patient guy, lol).

You know David hated to be in the fishbowl like that. He never strikes me as a guy who is 100% comfortable with the attention. He’s surely nice to look at, though ;)

I had to laugh at Neal & Andy’s girlfriends, if that was weird for us fans it had to be completely bizarre for them!

  68. I forgot one little silly tidbit I found amusing:
One of the girls opens a box in the living room and offers a cookie
to cookie(Ha I made a pun!)He says he can’t and she quips “Really?
Our chef made them.” as if baking a cookie is rocket science!

  69. That was oddly compelling and kinda uncomfortable all at the same time. I forgot about it and logged on pretty late, when it looked like Dave was the last one still reading the twitter board thingy. Then he was joking that he felt like he should be doing something cooler. And apparently that was losing at beer pong minus the pong, so they made due with tinfoil balls. (This is why we played quarters- you always have some of those on hand.) And then he lost at fusball. And then somebody twitter-joked that Dave couldn’t win at anything. And yeah, guitar boy seemed kinda douchey. Can’t really add much to the recaps, other than David really does casually refer to Neal as Doctor way more than his actual name which reminded me of my guy friends from college who all have nicknames with convoluted origin stories and still rarely refer to each other as anything else. And Andy cracks David up a lot. And I think it’s safe to say that Neal is a boob man, LOL. All three very nice guys who really did Simon Fuller a solid there because that had to be a weird experience, to say the least.

  70. Getty has pics up from last night. Is it horribly wrong for me to drool over that pic of him and Justin? He may be annoying but dayum.

The whole thing was REALLY awkward. As it got later and later you can tell he really wanted to get out of there but it looked like Neal wanted to stay. Can Simon Fuller please not make him do shit like this anymore? ack.

eta: Just a guess about the cookie exchange but I thought the chick was trying to get at the cookies were so good because their chef made them and he’d be nuts not to try them. something along those lines..

  71. sylvanaire-Thanks for sharing the lovely Getty pics and thanks to QueenJ (in case she’s lurking) and anyone I may have missed who took one for the team. It was just after 1:15 am when I started shutting everything off. I needed sleep. heh I gotta admit I felt a tad bit creepy watching it too but at times it was entertaining.

Thanks again for the thread mj. :)

  72. Ooh, thanks for the Getty pics, Trina! Hawt… Here are some more: http://filmmagic.com/ItemListing.aspx?cgl=424103&evntI=0

His hair is styled better than for Idol- spikier but less mullet-y in the back (he looked good for Idol, but it looked a *tad* long in the back).

I’ll confess, I watched the whole thing, felt like a voyeur, but couldn’t tear myself away. I think Neal and Andy were just more comfortable than David cuz they don’t have to worry about filtering and self-censoring the way he does, so David, while friendly and funny, was a little more uptight and guarded, but I’m sure he was glad to have the guys with him to put him more at ease, cuz it was worth staying up just to see these guys interact. They are so cute together.

Oh and David says he wants to write more with the band, but he’s pretty much fully scheduled into writing schedules every day so the last thing he wants to do after writing all day is to write more by himself, or with the guys. But he hopes to. I gotta say, when he said he was definitely writing with Zac Maloy some more, but wasn’t sure who else, he phrased it like, he just goes where he’s told kinda thing. I’m not saying that’s a terrible thing, cuz the sessions with Claude Kelly, Savan Kotecha, et al seem to have been fruitful. I’m just sayin.

OOH, also RE: the band playing on the record, he says he’s not sure, but IF not, it’s no discredit or reflection (can’t remember what he said) on the guys hard work or something. To which Andy replied, Thanks, man, or something. It was similar in tone to the fake crying he did when David said only Neal was going with him to Africa. NGL, kinda bummed the band being on the record isn’t a given… but they’ll do what they gotta do, and I have hope yet. Besides, the way the record is shaping up, it sounds awesome regardless. [-EDIT: I misheard, this was in reference to the band name being on the record, not the band recording the record! Phew! Sorry!] Oh, recalling more. David said “they” didn’t give him set deadlines but he set them himself, hoping for I think he said a late summer drop date.

And yeah, I now remember David said his favorite tour stop was KC, Andy said Baghdad and then Tulsa, Neal said Macon, GA and started to say something about a gothic church but was cut off.

David’s favorite KC stop was the Red Hot & Blue, not the casino. He grew up watching concerts at that pavilion. Can’t remember what they said exactly, but I got the impression they remember a lot of the cities based on what shenanigans took place. They laughed about Montreal, and how Montreal people (Montreal-ians?) loved Monty, or Southerners, or maybe something about bouncers loving Oklahomans? Lots of chuckling inside type stuff. Oh he told the story about chatroulette, and how one guy beating off while they were rehearsing said his *self-bleeped private parts* could play better than them, LOL. Oh, and he runs 3x a week and “works out” (i.e. weights) 3x a week, so he gets one day off. But said he was already off the wagon or something when turning down the cookie.

MollyAnnMay, not sure if you’re still around, but that is my favorite KC song. Apparently she originally wrote it when she was 16, so David Hodges must’ve polished it up with her. She’s singing about her mom and her parents’ divorce, and it’s amazing in concert. SO moving and raw when she sings it. It was cute, though, she apologized to her mom about that song though, when she introduced some other song she wrote which apparently puts her in a positive light (can’t remmeber which). I think KC has good writing instincts in her. A lot of her cowrites are her better songs, at least lyrically. I hate Ryan Tedder on principle, but Already Gone is pretty beautiful in spite of him, IMO cuz KC helped write it.

  73. JJF is now 1 away from being in the top 100 on i-tunes overall.

FYI: The link to purchase the song was posted on DCO about 5 minutes ago.

  74. I’m slow catching up on other threads, but was interested to learn that David Hodges co-wrote Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You.”

Kelly won some sort of songwriter’s award for that song. She had to fight to get it on the cd. RCA didn’t want it on there. She has talked about it. Great song.

  75. OOH, also RE: the band playing on the record, he says he’s not sure, but IF not, it’s no discredit or reflection (can’t remember what he said) on the guys hard work or something. To which Andy replied, Thanks, man, or something.

I think this was in reference to the band name being on the record, not whether or not they’ll be in the studio.

  76. I think this was in reference to the band name being on the record, not whether or not they’ll be in the studio.

Really? Phew! Sorry, it was late, I was prolly a little woozy, and it was hard to hear sometimes. Thanks for clarifying.

  77. Soo where’s this pic of David with Orianthi I keep seeing reference to? I keep seeing shipping comments about it but no one is actually posting it…

  78. Trina, I’d like to see it too. Getty doesn’t have any post-show shots of DC’s AI visit, just during the show shots.

  79. AI site has post show interviews here that do include a snippet with Cookie

re the house thing last night –
I couldn’t get it on my computer but probably would have been skeeved out anyway. Although after reading the reports, I must say I love David, Andy and Neal all the more! also making me happy – writing session with SVZ and with Zac Maloy. and glad DC gets to go to Africa wtih a friend!!

and so glad my favorite idol doesn’t wear a codpiece, grab his crotch while performing, or tweet from a urinal. I’m glad the show found someone for everyone

ETA – afternoon itunes numbers shows JJF at #90, DCTR at #261 (a nice little bump!)

  80. David just tweeted – not the 1000 tweet, which is a very funny infomercial parody about paper towels – in honor of last night? ;) – but the 1002, and yes, he was counting – about the trip to Ethiopia for him and Neal. It’s funny that we ever thought there would actually be downtime after the DeTewer. *shakes head* .

Just got my itinerary for my trip to Africa! Looking forward to the trip with @unfoundation #Idolgivesback #unforidol
    3 minutes ago via web

  81. Do you think since they got the itinerary that they will be going sooner rather than later. I was thinking they would have to go pretty soon because IGB is coming up pretty soon.

  82. @nealfingtiemann: I just got one of the worst texts I’ve ever received…I have to get shot. downtown. In an hour and a half.

That sounds to me like they are getting the shots they need for the trip today.

  83. I wanted to share something funny that my co-worker told me about the performance.

She is someone who claims to love the show, but is really just a casual viewer. She thinks of David as a favorite, but she doesn’t follow him musically. I told her he was going to be on Idol but left it a surprise what he would perform because I wondered what a casual fan would think.

The next day, I asked her about the performance, and she said, “I hated his new song.” I was like, “You know he was covering the Rolling Stones, right?” She had no idea it was their song – LOL! I guess the Stones missed out on a whole generation of 20 somethings, since few of us seem to know any of their music! (Although I knew this one pretty well)

  84. I was thinking they would have to go pretty soon because IGB is coming up pretty soon.

According to DCO, MWK has a performance scheduled for 3/25 in the LA area. Interesting, it hasn’t been cancelled.
Thanks to everyone who paraphrasically transcribed last night’s
whatever that was; I have very poor clarity in my hearing and I couldn’t catch at least 75% of what was said.

  85. I guess the Stones missed out on a whole generation of 20 somethings, since few of us seem to know any of their music!

Joyed, that Justin kid at the IICD House last night also didn’t know – he asked David if it was a new song – and ‘he’ wants to be a professional musician, judging by the way he was surgically attached to his guitar. He was all “I knew that – no I didn’t” when David explained it to him.

Do you think since they got the itinerary that they will be going sooner rather than later.

As far as I know, immunization shots need to be spaced out – because of possible reactions, so, they started today – but, poor Neal – that’s not all there will be.

And they won’t be going anywhere till after the MWK show on the 25th, as you say, Offside – and after David’s commitment on March 27th to support Better Than Ezra’s charity gig at Harrah’s in NOLA. I don’t think it’s logistically possible – IMO, Of Course.

IGB this year is on April 21st, according to MJ’s Season9 schedule. Not quite a month away from the NOLA gig..

    Downtime? What Downtime? ;)

  86. LMAO. Neal has like a bazillion piercings… he’s been poked with needles on his lips, nose, and god knows where else… and he’s afraid of a vaccine shot? LOL.

I think they’re probably going in a week or two. David needs to be back in time for IGB in April, followed by Race for a Cure in DC on 5/1.

I’m thinking it takes 2 days of travel to get to Ethiopia and 2 for the return. LA is near nothing internationally, except Mexico & Canada.
They’ll probably be there a few days. So the whole trip will be a little longer than a week. So I’m thinking it will be during the first 9 or 10 days in April.

  87. sma11ie and oceana, thank you so much for the info re: “Because of You” and also re: Kelly the writer — I honestly had no idea till recently that she wrote at all. I’m pretty impressed by what I’ve heard so far.

Which is a good segue to say Joyed that IS pretty funny — most of the Stones’ catalogue is in my bones, practically, and I don’t even consider myself that big a fan, although I did go see them in concert a couple times — because that was just the thing to do, back in the day. I guess you could say those songs are part of a universal life soundtrack for people older than 20-something.

As for JJF, it looks like it’s slipping back down the iTunes chart and I’m disappointed but not surprised. Dave and the guys rocked the *hell* out of the song, David’s vocal is really hot and in the iTunes mix you can hear Neal’s awesome guitar work really well, but the song itself is just… eh. Not a good one, IMO. I wish they had been able to do Gimme Shelter — that would have been amazing.

ETA: Forgot to say thanks to Sylnanaire for the recap of last night — I so didn’t want to watch that, but I was still curious. Very cool he got to write with Stevie Van Zandt!

And I agree that if they’re getting immunized today they won’t be heading out for at least a week — gotta give those antibodies time to develop. Based on past experience with an acquaintance, I hope Neal’s arms don’t get so sore it will be painful to play, either to practice or for the 25th. I was so torn about that gig — that place is very easy for me to get to (I saw Beck there years ago), but I hate GA shows. I’m short and dislike getting elbows to the head all night long. It’s moot anyway — looks like the show is sold out.

  88. If David goes to Africa the first week of April it looks like they will be in the studio after that. So the second week of April or so for studio time. I am thinking a single in April will be a minor miracle.

  89. I was so torn about that gig — that place is very easy for me to get to (I saw Beck there years ago), but I hate GA shows. I’m short and dislike getting elbows the the head all night long. It’s moot anyway — looks like the show is sold out.

MollyAnnMay, as far as I know, the tickets are being sold at the door, $7 – no advance sales – and MWK is first on the bill – so you may have a chance to be an Early Bird. If there’s intel otherwise, I haven’t seen it. Maybe you’ll go?

  90. If you listened to that chat Shirley gave the other day when she mentioned the April single thing I didn’t get the impression at all it was something he really believed could happen, more like something he was hoping to shoot for and was a bit optimistic. Common sense would suggest considering he’s still writing (and he said last night he’s got more sessions booked) hitting the studio isn’t happening THAT soon.

Not gonna lie I’m pretty disappointed in the itunes slide already. The hardcore fanbase atleast should have been able to get it higher than that not to mention the raves the performance got. I mean he’s gotten better bumps when he wasn’t actually ON the show performing. Very odd.

  91. It is very similar to the bump he got when Lie was on Carrie’s special but the difference being that the hardcore fans were not buying Lie that time it was all new buyers cause it is on the album. This is a new song for David. But it was not advertised at all. It was not announced on Idol. It is not on the front page of itunes, nor does it have the banner that Permanent had or Let it Be had because it is not a charity single. The only people that know it is there are the fans on twitter and his site and the folks that actually go to the itunes Idol site to purchase songs from the top 12 then they will see it at the top. There has been no promotion for the song except the twitter announcement and on DCO and the banner on the itunes American Idol page. So I am not surprised it did not go higher.

  92. incipit: tickets are being sold at the door

Ooh, that changes things a bit. I think they’re third on the bill though? That’s what it looks like to me. I think I’ll call and find out. Thanks!

I’m flying in from an out of town business trip that afternoon, but hey, what’s a little jet lag/exhaustion when it’s MWK in a really intimate venue? *g*

  93. I’m flying in from an out of town business trip that afternoon, but hey, what’s a little jet lag/exhaustion when it’s MWK in a really intimate venue? *g*

If you go, MollyAnnMay, please bring a recap back with you!

  94. offside: If you go, MollyAnnMay, please bring a recap back with you!

If I manage to get there, it will be my pleasure! Not least because it will be another show with these guys under my belt. Plus or minus Dave, I’m still eager to see them (though plus Dave would be amazing).

As for JJF, I’m not sure what to think. It was announced on Idol and that’s a pretty big audience, but then of course the delay till it was up was ridiculous, as usual. No advertising other than what was on the Top 12 page was not helpful, but he’s got >100,000 followers and who knows how many people on DCO. It does make me wonder if it reinforces the idea that expectations for the next single/album will have to be ratcheted down — though from discussions I’ve seen, they’re pretty well ratcheted already.

I also wonder if one of the reasons for JJF not to bounce up really high (apart from the intrinsically meh nature of the song itself) is that DC and the guys’ version rocked pretty hard — maybe too hard for an audience that was expecting (and happy with) TOML/CBTM-like songs. Do people not like hard driving rock anymore? I checked the iTunes Rock chart out of curiosity last night and was pretty astonished to discover that Mraz, Mayer and The Script are considered Rock. I’d call that kind of music Pop, but I guess Pop also has a very different definition than it used to. The boxes that commercial music gets forced into continue to puzzle me.

  95. I know the song wasn’t heavily advertised, but my point is the online fanbase should have been strong enough to get it higher and I’m just surprised. 105,000 twitter followers knew about it and Ryan doesnt always have to announce a song will be available for download. Songs that are sung during auditions get bigger bumps than this, hell DCTR got a higher bump when Tim sang CBTM than it got this time around. I would have expected a bad turnout IF the performance got panned, but it didnt. Several media outlets and just casual viewers opinions seemed to think it was a job well done. I dont put any blame either on it not being available right away. It went up a day earlier than Let It Be and LIB moved considerably faster and stronger.

  96. I could pretty much quote all the second half of what you wrote, MollyAnnMay – it feels as if I turned my head for a few years and all the categories changed – I guess those acts may be soft rock – but I never cared much for soft rock, if so. It’s all somebody else’s box…and maybe people who don’t recognize a Stones classic have only a vague connection to what you and I think of as rock, IDK.

As you say, it’s a puzzlement. *shrug*

If CBTM and the Magic Rainbow are to their taste, and “Let it Be’ – even though it was a charity single – well, those are very different genres of music from a Stones cover.

But hey – DCTR is at 300/47 and CBTM is #483, LO (Album) reappeared at #897 on the Top Songs list – so there have been gains today…two days after .

  97. Do people not like hard driving rock anymore?

Maybe the Idol audience really does like Ke$ha and her music, eh?
It’s all so strange to me. The rock stations are so snobbish about what they consider rock music, too. They won’t play alt rock, or
bluesy rock, because it’s not “real rock”. The only staions that play just straight up rock in any of it’s varieties are the classic rock stations, and everything on there is at least 10 years old!
It’s funny that Script, Mayer and Mraz should get a rock billing and David not.He has more hard driven songs than they do (or at least in
    concert he does!)

  98. Random observation: I am starting to think my 6 yr old will have “Time of My Life” as his graduation song. Heard it again tonight, lol.

  99. tierbee, are you running or walking the RFH? I’m just curious. I’m a virtual runner(I live in Ca) but I wanted to try to run 5k
that morning as you all in DC are actually participating. I’m not a runner, so it probably will be more of a “fast walk” , but it will make me feel more involved if I do it that way. It starts at 10am EDT, yes?

  100. Eh, it would be fun if it sold huge numbers, but I wasn’t expecting it to, really. As it is, it did fine. It’s a good cover of a middling RS song that doesn’t really have huge lasting modern popularity, and Ryan didn’t pimp it and mention it would be up for sale. There’s no charity tie in, either. Basically it looked like Cookie was showing up to take the place of the group sing and I was actually surprised to learn it was going to be put on iTunes.

As for the single itself, the performance was really about the cool visual of the rocking out more than the actual song so even diehard Cook fans might not be running to iTunes to put it on their iPods. I’d personally rather have a video myself. I still wish he would have picked It’s Only Rock and Roll. Much better song. Anyway, overall, for all of those reasons, I don’t see why this random surprise cover directly correlates to how new Cook music would be received with AI exposure and proper pimpage.

As for whether people want to buy hard driving rock, you can look and see if other Rolling Stones songs performed on the show got an iTunes boost this week. I remember Buckley’s Hallelujah got a huge boost. RIght now the highest ranking Rolling Stones song on iTunes is Paint It Black at 131. Cookie’s JJF cover, meanwhile, is outselling the RS version of PIB on the overall chart right now at 100. So there you go. Not a lot of buzz for RS week on AI overall to send peeps rushing to iTunes, and Cook is actually outselling the Stones originals. I repeat, Cook’s JJF is outselling all of the Stones originals. That’s a good thing, I would think.

  101. Wow ok is anyone else concerned that this song sunk like a lead balloon on Itunes? Currently at 104.

I think this is a great live track. And I was not so sure about it in the beginning.

If this is indicative of what will happen with his next release I am seriously worried. If DC can’t even get his song into the Top 50 on itunes when he performed to an audience of 20 Million, I am really worried.

  102. I wish it would have been announced that the single would be released on iTunes. I also think that not everyone turns in at the beginning of the show but rather later on just to get the results. I watched from the beginning but was really surprised to see Cook on that early! Caught me quite off guard and my heart started beating pretty quickly! lol

Tierbee, I heard TOML as I walked into the dentist’s office last week too.

  103. Pretty much where I’m at Garnetstar. And I was just talking to another fan on IM and she brought something up..the way his tweet was worded yesterday with the ‘please’ download it, I really hope this wasn’t thrown on there with little fanfare as a way of gauging his fanbase considering its been quite a while since he’s had anything for sale. The DCTR bump also dropped pretty fast too. I don’t believe for a minute the online fans aren’t aware of it and I don’t think him being on early in the show was a problem.

RCA seriously better get him in the studio and start establishing a strong radio presence for him. These writing sessions are going on way too long IMO.

  104. It’s basically fuckery. Sorry for the bad language. RCA is reaping what they sowed with the single selections and for basically ignoring him and his record for the later half of 2009 going into 2010.

I am seriously sad to see that this is happening to DC. He had amazing sales coming off of idol and RCA squandered his talent and potential by saddling him with songs that did not represent who he was as an artist and generic songs for him to sing for the better part of 2 years.

ETA: Meh I realize this post has more to do with past issues with RCA than the JJF thing.

  105. LOL, don’t you guys think you’re jumping the gun just a little? I’m STILL pissed at the way the singles were handled, or mishandled completely, I should say. There is no excuse for taking a platinum plus album and only releasing two of the weakest tracks and not giving a third song like Lie a try when those weaker tracks actually, what do you know, do halfway decent in sales and chartage. I think Lie would have been an easy sell to HAC at the very least. No excuse. ANd I don’t understand the no definite time table thing for the new single, because you’d think they’d have this all planned out well in advance.

But I’m also not feeling the chicken little syndrome based on a confusing surprise AI appearance and a fairly straight Rolling Stones cover, and I’m pretty freakin knollish and angsty in general. Here’s why I’m not feelin it:
    1) The Permanent charity single did really well and that was despite the ball dropping getting it up on iTunes and the limited availability. Permanent wasn’t a cover.
    2) Ol’ DCTR got a fairly decent sized bump this week, pretty good for this late in the game after talk of a new album on the way no less.
    3) CBTM and LO even got a little bump.
    4) I bet DCTR might eventually hit 1.5 mill. LO sold plat. CBTM has sold, what, over 400,000 approaching 450,000 last we checked and is also probably going to eventually hit gold. That’s a lot of ears that might be interested when there’s actual new music to buy.
    5) Everything I said up yonder.

Wait until Idol Gives Back when Cook is all weepy with the sweet disadvantaged children and he and Neal play something heart tugging and acoustic (and hopefully not a cover.) If nobody gives a crap about Cook after that, then I’ll be worried that the magic is gone. And if the first single from Anthemic Boogaloo is released without a label push and radio support and proper promo, then I’ll concede that RCA probably weren’t all that gung ho on Cook from jump and that would explain a lot. But seriously, until then? I don’t think the sky is falling yet. There’s a good chance that the label is still planning a hard sell and want to put their efforts into a major relaunching for Cook with this second album.

  106. Where’s the benchmark for this? I don’t believe there is one – so nothing to compare it to. I refuse to worry now just to save time later, because it actually doesn’t. Save time. Now or Later. Angst never does.

It’s such a stretch to compare a single cover of a Forty Two Year Old rock song, dropped out of the blue for one performance, and available on iTunes from Idol the day AFTER all the other Idol performances, with no promo, and no advance notice, to the Rollout of the New Album with Brand New Songs by RCA, that my credulity factor just snapped from the pressure of these imaginary parallels. One has nothing to do with the other.

    IMO. Of Course..

ETA: (And isn’t it nice when we can) The DCTR Bump has not yet dropped – it’s moved up a bit instead. On a Sixteen Month Old Album.

  107. And 3, 2, 1 . . . . right on schedule. LOL The angst just can’t stay away from this fandom, can’t it? Heh.

  108. This isnt the only fandom that “angsts”.Its a natural thing in all fandoms, yes even Carrie’s fandom who deals with so much goodness on a daily basis does the occasional worrying thing so its nothing new and I dont think anything is wrong with being concerned with how he’s still capable of selling. Idol fans have always been obsessed with numbers and you can be sure if numbers actually come out on Wednesday they’ll be analyzed. I’d be shocked if RCA/19 wasn’t the least bit curious how many downloads he can move of a song, cover or not, that was just performed on the biggest show on TV.

  109. Honestly, I think the song was chosen to highlight the band and it did that really well: showed that Cook has a great, talented group of people around him.

But it’s not a fantastic song, the lyrics are kind of ‘meh’ and whilst DC sang it really well (of course) it had nowhere to go to give it a real ‘wow’ factor.

So – no reason to buy it really. It wasn’t anywhere near as good as his standout Idol covers, because the focus wasn’t on him or mood or meaning. It reminded me far more of Hungry Like The Wolf.

But it’s not like he’s in the competition anymore and it’s not like this is a real single.

Actually, I think releasing the cover as a single is kind of puzzling; I think the whole idea of going on Idol to perform a cover at this stage is also puzzling (even if it was a pleasure to see them) and I saw several reviews mention the same thing.

I’m not going to angst until the real single and album are released. But I do think that DCTR2 is going to have far more of a real time battle to be heard this time around. And how well it does totally will depend on the quality of the lead off single and the album. So I’ll be mad if they choose some light, bland, generic crap like LO or CBTM again, I really will.

  110. Wellll… I’m kinda embarrassed to say it, but I haven’t even bought JJF yet. I don’t have much money right now, and however much I loved seeing them rock out to it on my TV, it really is a meh song and only sentimental to me b/c I grew up dancing around to it so the Stones version does fine on my iPod to cover that. I’d buy a video… If I had more money I’d pick it up just to be supportive but I can’t imagine I’m the only one who just isn’t all that enthused. I’m waiting for new David Cook music :)

For casual Idol viewers, I really don’t think that a lot of folks even knew it was for sale. My mom and my sister didn’t, and they both watched the show. (For that matter, I suspect a lot of people don’t even know the Idols’ stuff is for sale – or don’t have iPods, again like everyone else in my family but me.)

I’ll angst later about his album. I think the singles were terribly mismanaged the first time around, but I think it’s a good point that we’ll have a better idea with the IGB thing. I am just not quite sure there’s a parallel between lightly advertised cover of a meh song and the new album. They ARE going to have to get out and push it, though, they let him vanish for too long by not releasing another single. And I’m still angry that Lie was never on my radio, BTW.

  111. And how well it does totally will depend on the quality of the lead off single and the album. So I’ll be mad if they choose some light, bland, generic crap like LO or CBTM again, I really will.

And YES to that. I will have a big, fat temper tantrum if it is something like either of those, but in particular CBTM.

  112. BTW, my mom and sister got home late and missed the beginning of the show, too, so… missed David. And wouldn’t have known he was on there if I didn’t send them video. I wish he’d performed later in the show.

  113. But I do think that DCTR2 is going to have far more of a real time battle to be heard this time around. And how well it does totally will depend on the quality of the lead off single and the album. So I’ll be mad if they choose some light, bland, generic crap like LO or CBTM again, I really will.

I think there is a distinct discrepency between the music David’s fans want to hear and the music RCA wants to be heard. Don’t forget, they did release BBS as a single(kind of)and look how they treated it ie editing, no promotion at all. I just hope he is able to stand his ground when it comes time decide which songs they wrote do make the record and get some of the interesting and rock ones he seems so excited about and not too many of the pop ones.

  114. I think there is a distinct discrepency between the music David’s fans want to hear and the music RCA wants to be heard.

Me too – I sincerely hope that anyone who had any role in trying to make DCTR appeal to the ‘supposed wants and needs of the cougar crowd/idol audience’ have gone the f**k away and don’t come back again!

Not that I feel strongly about this or anything :lol

And that’s not because all of DCTR was bland and generic at all – there are a lot of good indieish/mainstream song moments on there…but the singles??!!

Anyhow, DC seems so excited about the current forming of DCTR2 and is saying really interesting things about dynamics and saltier lyrics etc…I hope it does turn out the way he seems to be envisioning it and does not go through the AI blender at some point.

  115. Meh. The only reason I bought it is because he asked me to (and that wasn’t until today). I might listen to it a couple of times, but it is what it is: A competent version of a less-than-fave Stones song.

I totally agree that the more important metric is that the album still got a bump.

And there weren’t “several” reviews that were puzzled; there were one or two, at least one of which assumed that he actually had the new album out already.

Honestly, I found the intro “spat” pretty off-putting, and I wouldn’t be surprised if a few people were still WTFing all the way through the song.

  116. standtotheright

I didn’t read many reviews and just read through the summaries on Google, but several to me means 3 or 4 and that’s how many I saw that were puzzled by DCATA being on to perform a Rolling Stones cover. Shrug.

I also saw 3 or 4 that said what a pile of crap the performance was and many more that just enjoyed it for what it was and said how great it was.

    None of it really matters.

I still can’t see the point of having ex-Idols back on to perform covers and I found it a bit of an odd idea, that’s all.

I don’t think it will have any impact on the upcoming album release at all, nor do I think the sales of JJF have any relation to how well (or not – blasphemy!) DCTR2 will do.

  117. Tierbee, you didn’t buy it? This angst is all your fault! :O

Like I said, it was fun to watch and accomplished a lot in the way of establishing the awesomeness of the band if the onslaught of all the “that’s how you rock out to the Stones” reviews are any indication, but its not necessarily something even the diehards are gonna rush to buy cuz it has to go on their iPods right. now. I like to think of the JJF performance as a brief infomercial for the next tour. “David Cook’s coming to town? Oh, I’ve always liked him, and I remember how his band kicked ass on that Stones cover on Idol last season. I bet they’re really good live. I think I’ll check them out….” ;) I really do not believe the notion that it was meant as a litmus test for fanbase erosion, and that’s the logical Spock-like part of my brain talking, too. Why not slap it up on iTunes and make a few extra bucks seems to be the rationale behind it, for me for you.

Re: choosing singles for the next album and avoiding another LO/CBTM sitch…I’m guessing Cook’s way of putting his foot down there is being involved in writing every. single. song. that’s possibly being considered. He’s been a writing fool, bless his prolific little heart. I do hope he fights to get a band cowrite on the album, though. Doesn’t have to be the lead single, but he and Neal vibe together really well artistically and it would be a damn shame to let that go to waste. None of that making one of the best album cuts a bonus song crap this time around.

  118. Me too – I sincerely hope that anyone who had any role in trying to make DCTR appeal to the ’supposed wants and needs of the cougar crowd/idol audience’ have gone the f**k away and don’t come back again!

Oh, I’m glad this was brought up! I have a question regarding “cougars”.
Is every woman over the age of 40 considered a cougar? I thought it was a derrogatory term for women who chase after younger men, but I keep hearing it referenced otherwise. I’m 44, and would never dream of chasing a younger man, but because I like rock music I’m a cougar? Are we expected to change our taste in music as we age? People my age were in many cases raised on rock music, so it isn’t so odd that we would still listen to it. Is a man over the age of 40 who listens to rock music also a cougar? If someone can shed some light on this for me, I would appreciate it, as it really puzzles me.

  119. offside, it’s honestly become such a unthinking pejorative that I bet the people who use the word couldn’t give you a good definition of what it means.

Your understanding of the initial definition is correct. And sadly, there is still enough commentary out there involving older women discussing how HAWT he is (and simultaneously being uninvolved with music otherwise), that it’s kind of fed that meme. Even though many women over the age of 40, as you said, like rock music because they grew up liking rock music, and like Cook because they like rock.

Using the label is stupid, lazy, and gross. But the people who do it seem impervious to acknowledging that it’s stupid, lazy, and gross.

  120. Thanks, standtotheright, for clearing that up a bit for me. I’ve been hesitant to ask because sometimes I see it in people’s screen names and bios, etc. and didn’t want to offend anyone who thought of it affectionately.

  121. Boy, we do angst, don’t we? I have to laugh at going from 90 to 110 being characterized as plummeting (he’s at #110 this morning), especially after he rose from zero to 90 so quickly. Sure I’d have loved it if he rose faster and higher, but your typical Idol demographic would not tend to go for a harder rock song. They would probably prefer an easy-listening-ized version like the contestants generally did. People outside the Idol bubble, who would be more rock leaning, wouldn’t even have known the single existed. With Ryan making no mention and the single appearing a full day after the d/l rush for the contestants, I’m surprised it did as well as it did. Even his appearance was barely mentioned, and was hidden at the start, when many would not tune in.

Rather than a litmus test on him, it’s probably more a reflection of who watches Idol – and I wonder how many, like some that have been cited – thought it was his new single and not a cover. I am not a Stones fan and have never liked the song, but he made me like it and I bought it. Not everyone will feel that way.

  122. Tierbee, you didn’t buy it? This angst is all your fault! :O

It’s my job’s fault. They haven’t paid me in 3 weeks. THEY are the root of all angst, damn them!

  123. Me too – I sincerely hope that anyone who had any role in trying to make DCTR appeal to the ’supposed wants and needs of the cougar crowd/idol audience’ have gone the f**k away and don’t come back again!

Point being that that’s a (paraphrased) quote from the DCTR producer in an EW interview before DCTR’s release (as I’m sure everyone knows). So from the horse’s mouth and all that!

As a 38 year old female myself, it pisses me off no end to see myself and my musical tastes put in any kind of box, let alone one who’s ‘supposed wants and needs’ are encompassed by LO and CBTM!

  124. Indymuse – honestly. I can’t buy a copy of JJF, because it isn’t available outside the US, but even if I could, I’m not sure that I would, for any reason other than a show of solidarity with DC&TA.

And that’s nothing to do with only liking easy-listening-ised versions of songs: I don’t like that song. I don’t think it’s one of the best Rolling Stones songs and there was nothing about the cover that made it any more interesting to me (sorry DC&TA!).

Now, if it was a new song by them, I’d be there in a shot!

You must tell your employers that Cook’s career hangs in the balance, dependent upon you downloading this JJF cover, and demand to be paid. Unless they are like bitter Archie fans or something, in which case, it all makes evil sense. Seriously, though, (((tierbee))) hope they get on the ball for ya. Completely understand spending your money wisely. Gotta love this economy.

  126. I refuse to angst about this. I’m just gonna be happy that DCTR got a sales bump and that Cookie and the band were on TV looking pretty. Good news that we’ll see him (and Neal) during Idol Gives Back. I believe, like departed Paula, that David Cook is a bright shinging star.

  127. I’ve been hesitant to ask because sometimes I see it in people’s screen names and bios, etc. and didn’t want to offend anyone who thought of it affectionately.

Well, that’s a separate issue. Those people a) seem to think that it means something like “with-it older woman” (although if they were as “with-it” as they claimed to be they’d be aware of the other definition), or b) know that it suggests sexual pursuit of a younger man and are perfectly happy to be announcing that.

Whichever the reason, I knock at least 10 IQ points off my estimate whenever someone actually chooses to label themselves that way. That may be unkind, but it’s a fair reaction, IMO.

  128. Maybe the term is in the midst of undergoing a transitional defintion; you know, how like gay once meant happy, then it was a
degrading word for homosexual, now it’s universal for homosexual.

  129. Whichever the reason, I knock at least 10 IQ points off my estimate whenever someone actually chooses to label themselves that way. That may be unkind, but it’s a fair reaction, IMO.

Only 10? You’re much more charitable than me! LOL

  130. If this is indicative of what will happen with his next release I am seriously worried. If DC can’t even get his song into the Top 50 on itunes when he performed to an audience of 20 Million, I am really worried.

I hardly think TBTP would rest their decisions on DCTR@ on a 40 year old RS single. DC&TA did a one off gig (probably to bail out an atrocious group sing, S9 contestants just can’t sing the Stones). He was superb with the material he had to work with (not my fav RS song) and made the other two “guest stars” look like amatuers. The song was NOT advertised as a download on national TV so I’m happy that it made it to the Top 100. Pretty damn good for a one-time song with no push.

DC&TA will be fine. TPTB have spent a TON of money on DCTR2 already and IMO would not throw him under a bus (they’re in the business to MAKE MONEY).

  131. The song was NOT advertised as a download on national TV so I’m happy that it made it to the Top 100.

Wasn’t it mentioned at the end of the night? I thought I remembered that it was , but I only really payed close attention to the first 15 min. of the show!
The reviews from the various media sights were pretty positive, also.
I just wish they could have found a way to compliment him(them)without having to insult the contestants or some other past AI winners.
