David Cook Joins Kevin Griffin On Stage at the KC Kissmas Bash

Kevin Griffin of the band Better than Ezra surprised the crowd at the 99.7 Kissmas bash in Kansas City, Mo Wednesday night by bringing hometown boy, David Cook, on stage to duet in exquisite harmony on “Absolutely Still”.

Kevin and David co-wrote the song “Avalanche” from David’s 2008 album, David Cook.

David is back home in KC after recently finishing up his marathon Declaration Tour, and is hard at work writing songs for his next album, set to be released sometime in 2010

  1. (First! LOL…I always wanted to do that.) Okay, Kevin Griffin has my permission to cowrite another tune with David. Gooorgeous. I really want to hear them do this with Avalanche now, too.

ETA: Hell to the naw, smartcookie. Acoustic Dave here is purdy, but Anthemic Dave is mah fave Dave.

  2. Rob Cavallo wasn’t kidding when he praised his harmonizing skills. Seriously gorgeous.

  3. Those two have my permission to start a new band together and dump the Anemic Pandemic Anorexic thing.

  4. Those two have my permission to start a new band together and dump the Anemic Pandemic Anorexic thing.

As long as they keep Neal and Kyle!

  5. I just posted this in headlines, but it should go here. I’m with Sunchick. I also wouldn’t mind if DC wrote with KG again. Avalanche is a good song for DC– it’s full potential was just ruined a bit by the overproduction on the studio track, IMO.

Also, DC needs to duet with people as much as possible, whenever he gets a chance. Carrie, Archie, Andy, Ryan Star, Andrew, even those lame-ass Idol group sings, etc. It’s always FTW.

  6. absolutely love the harmony of these two. David is so amazing. He keeps surprising us even while on vacation. Yay!!!! Plus he’s singing the National Anthem Sunday for the Chiefs game on his B’day. I hope they broadcast it here so I can see him one more time.

    Yeah, more harmonies.

  7. Woah…that song is beautiful with David’s vocal behind it. I’m sure it’s great without it but wow…it’s truly lovely. I think I might be listening all day long!

  8. He can duet with everyone – love it. Love his harmonies. Write us another song like Avalanche because… I love that, too. And yay for a thread on this so I have an excuse to watch this… again. Just keep on feeding my Cookie addiction :)

  9. Two of my absolute favorite guys singing together. I never do this, but I feel I must let out a huge SQUEE!!! BTE’s lastest album, Paper Empire, is awesome, BTW. This was the lead single off of it.

  10. Flove this performance! Lovely song and amazing vocals. A little bit closer would be nice too, but I’m so over 99% of the DCATA videos being closeups of David. I like to see the whole band and how they interact during shows.

Mr. Cook’s voice always will captivate me, the tone and texture coupled with the beautiful falsetto. Never will I get enough!

  11. I hope a closer vid turns up, because that was really good. I guess DC cured his restlessness a bit.

  12. Cute pic of DC, Andrew, Kelly Urich and someone else: http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs056.snc3/14338_1231625803872_1625949728_591141_8307983_n.jpg

Why does he always make faces? It’s cute, and I realize he’s a goof but he seriously does this like 99% of the time– does he not realize how photogenic he is? I have a friend who always makes faces for the camera and refuses to pose for a serious pic, and it turns out she doesn’t think she’s very photogenic. I almost wonder if someone needs to tell him that it’s not the case with him…

  13. Wow, that’s just like buttah……I do so love DC’s chameleon voice and I’m a huge fan of Avalanche. Yes, more collab! Hope a better vid shows up!

  14. that was absolutely stunning. as always. thank you for sharing. hooray for a restless cookie!

  15. ahhhh beautiful harmony here! Love it. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love goofy Dave. Hee I do agree that does have a photogenic face and should show it more.

Acoustic Dave here is purdy, but Anthemic Dave is mah fave Dave.

Indeed. I would love to see massive duet overload but Anthemic Dave holds a special place in my heart.

  16. Thanks for that. David can harmonize with anyone, just beautiful. I’m still pissed about the duet with Carrie, sitting on a shelf somewhere, when I really want to see it, damn-it.

  17. the harmony is great, considering they probably have just one time to practice.

im guessing that DC is getting ansty. he needs to take a few days and get a tan in some island somewhere. maybe some paparazzi can take a picture of him in his speedo, still wearing his boots, of course.

  18. I LOVE it when David does the high harmony in a song. Just gorgeous. I hope he and Kevin Griffin had time to squeeze in a writing session together! Maybe something they could record as a duet for DCTR2. A celebrity duet as a single for the next album could give him and the album a big boost.

How many Mudtrucker shirts did Dave buy while he was in NYC? ;)

  19. Love DC! Love his harmonies! Rob Cavallo is right – David is an incredibly gifted singer. and he’s always generous when singing a duet, so both singers shine. Thanks for the thread, MJ. If Cookie keeps being restless while not on tour, maybe we’ll keep getting crumbs like this.

  20. I’m in Dulcet Duet Trance this morning and it makes me say crazy impossible things, like. . .. Please, Dave, please please please slide in a duet on your next album. Just one. With anybody. I don’t care who anymore. You can sing with anybody. And yeah, I know, never gonna happen.

ETA: I missed CathyMK’s earlier comment that a celebrity duet could help the next album’s sales. Yes!

  21. the harmony is great, considering they probably have just one time to practice.

That’s probably true, it was, after all, a well kept surprise – but I think David and Kevin had an advantage from working together on “Avalanche”, they knew what each other’s voices could do – and that they could safely trade off lines and phrases, switch back to singing in unison, and David could go for those killer high harmonies….and play the acoustic guitar at the same time.

It certainly sounds gorgeous with both their voices weaving in and out – the mp3 is excellent.

  22. That’s really beautiful. Reminds me of that duet with Ryan, those high harmonies are killer.

Josiah was touring with Better than Ezra. I wonder if it’s over. It would have been nice if he was there.

  23. Dear MJ thanks for publishing.

When a guy’s voice is that beautiful, even a teeny teeny quarter inch high YouTube Cookie can be an amazing things

    Eeeeeee, god is this lovely.

Dear Evil Forces — if David Cook were to duet on a record and you had rights to it and could put it up for sale, imagine how amazing it could be . . .

  24. Gah, I have been listening to this for 5 hours and I love it. Flove the harmonies. I love David’s voice. I love his falsetto. Damn, that was lovely.

  25. David’s rich tone makes it sound like more than one singer is harmonizing with Kevin. Beautiful. I do wish he does a duet for his record, I would not mind it with anyone. Andy Skib from his band comes to mind but Carrie, Kelly, Ryan or just about anyone would do.

  26. Wow that is so beautiful it breaks my heart. I know it’s not really what he want to do musically, but damn. Just lovely. His falsetto is absolutely gorgeous, and I don’t even LIKE falsetto. Sheesh. *repeats to self, I want him to do what he wants to do, I want him to do what he wants to do…..*

Dear Evil Forces ‘” if David Cook were to duet on a record and you had rights to it and could put it up for sale, imagine how amazing it could be . . .

Haha! Oh, that would be way too easy now wouldn’t it? Where’s the challenge? Much more fun to have to push rocks like CBTM uphill.

Haha! Oh, that would be way too easy now wouldn’t it? Where’s the challenge? Much more fun to have to push rocks like CBTM uphill.

Oh, man, that is so sadly/hilariously true. God forbid there should be a sure-fire hit-it-out-of-the-park single released, like. . .I dunno. . .a duet between Jordan and Chris Brown, the ditty that made all the difference in her career up to that point. No, don’t do that, ptb, just push that fun rock.

  28. That really was beautiful. I love when David shows his falsetto. He really does have incredible range & he can sing just about anything. I love my Cookie crumbs. He never overpowers anyone when he does a duet and does very well here doing harmony.

I have no idea why DC does the goffey faces. He’s probably always done that and let’s face it, he’s a goof. David is the kind of guy that is “what you see is what you get.” He doesn’t care about being “Hollywood/LA” because he’s still that mid-western down-to-earth goof and celebrity is just not his thing. I really think that is why when you meet him or see him in concert, you just can’t help but love the guy & give him a big hug. He never says anything mean to anyone & avoids contraversy. He’s your “boy next door.”

I am definitely for him doing a duet with someone on his next album. I like “rocker” Dave in concert but his voice is too darn good to not show different sides of him & really showcase his talent.

  29. Well David Cook’s Siren-like* voice persuaded me to plunk down my hard-earned money once again. I was over at Amazon browsing the Idol Day promo (via mjs affiliate link, natch), and since I’ve had the ‘Absolutely Still’ duet on continuous loop since 6am, decided to check-out the BTE album that this appears on. I haven’t listened to Better than Ezra since 1995. And yup, Amazon one-click does me in again and I bought the entire album MP3 for $9.99. Yay new music!

    * Siren not siren.

  30. I haven’t listened to Better than Ezra since 1995. And yup, Amazon one-click does me in again and I bought the entire album MP3 for $9.99. Yay new music!

I won tickets to see them here in Philly this past June, and it was one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to in my life. Just great live performers with awesome banter, and incredibly devoted fans. (Sound familiar?) They made a fan for life out of me.

I’m going to have to check them out. They sound like a good band.

  32. If David really wants to establish himself as a rocker, he should think about doing a duet with a popular modern rock artist/band, like Linkin Park, a Carrie David duet would be interesting, so would Kings Of Leon..

  33. Speaking of Kings of Leon, I saw in some entertainment magazine the rumor that Julianne Hough is dating the bassist from KOL. Small world.

  34. That was beautiful! Beautiful! Wow! Love David Cook! Love Avalanche! Seems like this Better Than Ezra guy has something going for him!

ETA: Ohhhhh, DC harmonies on the next album, YES!!! Please!

  35. I would love to see David, Andy and Kyle perform an acoustic
Crosby, Stills and Nash song live…..

  36. Re: David doing goofy faces in pics. In an interview about the time of the album release last year he said he did it to put a little distance between him and the photog. Something like that. Let me see if I can find the video of it. Brb. MTV Buzzworthy Interview At about the 10:20 point. He says the funny faces are a defense mechanism so he doesn’t give too much of himself away. Pretty interesting answer, no?

  37. I always love Cook. I love musicians and Cook is a true musician and knows music.

  38. Thanks for the thread, MJ. After listening about a billion times, I’ve decided I like the song, love love love David’s voice on it, and wish KG would shut up so I could hear David better. Of course, if KG wasn’t singing, David wouldn’t be doing the harmony, so I should be careful what I wish for, I guess. hee.

  39. He says the funny faces are a defense mechanism so he doesn’t give too much of himself away. Pretty interesting answer, no?

Man, I remember that now! And yes, it is interesting, much like everything else about Mr. Cook ;)

  40. Loved the video even though it’s way too short but am also sad about not seeing Cookwood duet! He sure sounds great. I did see a serious pic of him with Andrew and the same woman at the show (on one of those Examiner sites I think) but have no clue how to link it, sorry…

  41. Man, I don’t turn on my computer for one day and I miss this beautiful duet. Thanks for posting MJ!

  42. Absolutely gorgeous. I would also love a good duet on the next album. He blends well with damn well anyone, but I’ve especially loved his blending with Carrie. So that would be awesome. Or, oooh, how about Neko Case? Or, hmmm, Brandi Carlisle? Or, hmmm.

I absolutely love AcousticDave, but I also enjoy AnthemicDave. I could see being very happy with a concert that had the rocking stuff, but maybe had an acoustic break. But I’d never ask for DC to give up the plugged-in rock—he loves it, and so do I.

Offside, I so agree. A little “Teach Your Children” perhaps? Or anything, realy.

  44. I could see being very happy with a concert that had the rocking stuff, but maybe had an acoustic break.

Ah, the best of both worlds. Honestly, I like Dave singing with just his electric guitar even better than AcousticDave. So, if he continues to throw one of those in there too, I’d be super thrilled.

By the way, y’all, methinks the serial bromancer has collected yet another partner in male bonding here with Kevin. I’m so adding Better Than Ezra to the Bromancipalooza roster…. And it seems like Sam Hollander was also a notch in the proverbial bedpost. Oh, that Dave.

  45. Absolutely gorgeous. I would also love a good duet on the next album. He blends well with damn well anyone, but I’ve especially loved his blending with Carrie. So that would be awesome. Or, oooh, how about Neko Case? Or, hmmm, Brandi Carlisle? Or, hmmm.

Folkfan, I would LOVE a duet with Brandi Carlisle. One of my favorite female singers. However, If I had to pick someone high profile, my wish would be Alicia Keys..I think those two would kill it.
And as most people said, I love anthemic as much as acoustic Dave. I hought his best concerts were the ones that had a good balance of both, and coming to the end of his tour, it became evident that a handful of songs (like LOTM and Avalanche) sounded better acoustic.

If David really wants to establish himself as a rocker, he should think about doing a duet with a popular modern rock artist/band, like Linkin Park, a Carrie David duet would be interesting, so would Kings Of Leon..

I’m probably one of the few people who don’t like KOL, but if Cook decided to pair up with one of the nu metal guys like Linkin Park, Disturbed or Papa Roach I would be ecstatic (although I might be in the minority here!). Of course, I have no idea what Cook thinks of those groups, (and some of their songs actually require that you sing badly), but I think there are certain aspects of that sound that Cook could easily work with(especially since he likes Barbasol which is sort of a lite version of that sound)

  46. Although I don’t think it is likely to happen I must chime in and say I agree with you May about any sort of reference to Linkin Park or nu metal. My secret wish is the songwriting sessions with Claude Kelly was in creation of some sort of version of this. Totally my delusions but I wanted to let you know you are not alone in this mindset. (I don’t love KOL either).

  47. A little ‘Teach Your Children’ perhaps? Or anything, really.

I vote for Helplessly Hoping, Suite Judy Blue Eyes, or Woodstock. I would die and be in heaven if that happened. I remember sitting in the front row at the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion in L.A. seeing them live, snorting coke (it was a long time ago). Their harmonies were ethereal … Neil Young was there too … one of those special memories.

  48. Or, oooh, how about Neko Case?

God, can you imagine the resonant frequencies in that room? Neko’s voice live is the only one I’ve ever heard that makes every cell in my body vibrate the way Cook’s does. I think this might make my chest implode. But from my little pile of goo on the floor I’d be sayin’ “yeah, that was awesome”.

  49. Taking a break on Christmas stuff, so I can be even more behind than I already am. But, needed to hear this again. One word – sexy. Sexy as hell. OK three words!

  50. I’m jelous of you, oceana ( not for the coke snorting; for seeing CSNY. ) I think they shall always be my favorites. I would love David, Andy and Kyle to perform
Wooden Ships, Carry On, or Guinnevere.

  51. I cannot stop listening to this song. It’s stuck in my head. I know Kevin already released it. But I would kill to hear a recorded version of this with DC on my radio

  52. Still listening. Not bored. Still thrilled with it.

Me too! Keep coming back for more :)

  53. @thedavidcook Just a reminder to any in the KCMO area. Chiefs v. Browns on 12/20. SOMEONE might be singing the national anthem. just sayin’…
12:16 AM Dec 14th from web

Hey Chiefs fans: I’m singing the anthem this Sunday at Arrowhead! Come help cheer the Chiefs to a win with me for my birthday! The big 2-7! 4:30 PM Dec 16th from web

Sooo’ ¦ Cook ‘asked’ for the invitation, lol!

  54. What am I missing? I’ve reread those tweets several times and I can’t see anything that implies that David asked to be invited to sing. The first tweet was just a tease, the second one confirmed the fact. ? Not important, but I’m just wondering if I’m missing something.
