Daily Numbers’ Thread – 08/02/16

This week is brought to you by the numbers 9 and 15.3M.

Sia notches another week on the top of the Hot 100 with “Cheap Thrills” and Major Lazer has the best selling song with “Cold Water”. This is the highest Major or MØ have ever been on the chart. Meanwhile, Billboard notes that Bieber becomes the male artist with the most debuts in the top 2 at 4 (1-“What Do You Mean”, 2-“Sorry”, “Boyfriend” and “Cold Water”). Only Mariah has more top 2 debuts with 5. Without the arrival of “Cold Water”, the top 10 would have been very static with just two songs swapping places.

Wonder why Kayne started tweeting about Apple, measuring sticks and cutting Jay-Z a cheque? Well, it means a big cheque for Kanye too as he has a stake in Tidal and it gives him access to all the goodies Apple is handing out. Drake apparently got $19M for his deal with Apple/Beats 1 and you know how Kayne needs more money so that he can make this world a better place with his genius (since Zuckerberg turned out to be too cheap just to give him $1 billion after Kayne asked so nicely and all on twitter for it). Plus, there is a matter of subscription. While Spotify has 30M paid subscribers (100M free ones) and Apple has 15M, Tidal has just 3M.

K-Pop may take a hit Beijing style. Turns out China is not a fan of US missiles being deployed in South Korea and they are planning on demonstrating their ire by limiting access of Korean artists to Chinese markets. Shares of South Korean entertainment companies are taking a dive. China doesn’t trust the loon in charge of North Korea, why should the South Koreans? And North Korea is finally getting missiles that can kind of fly properly.
