  1. I really like Ridin’ With The Radio. I could hear that one on the radio. These are great videos.

  2. Dear David Bendeth:

LISTEN TO HOW GREAT THESE LIVE PERFORMANCES ARE!! THEY’RE INCREDIBLE!! DON’T YOU DARE FUCK UP HER MUSIC WITH YOUR GODDAMN STUDIO GARBAGE!! YOU CAN TAKE YOUR OVERPRODUCED, OVER-ARRANGED, MIX OF CLUTTERED DOG SHIT AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR ASS!! JUST PUT THESE SONGS ON THE FUCKING ALBUM RAW AND LIVE, FOR CHRIST SAKE!!

    Sincerely,

Every Crystal fan in the world

  3. Very nice performances from Crystal, I hope they didn’t ruin that song in the recording process. The show doesn’t seem to have changed her much, still a good folk rock chick but now signed to a major label

  4. None of these videos won’t play for me.

Negativo, don’t be shy! Tell us what you think!

  5. I cannot wait to see her live! I’ve heard it before, but Farmer’s Daughter is just heartbreaking. I also hear Ridin’With the Radio, but this quality is so much better! Great job Crystal!

  6. jtoms: Crystal definitely performed Hold On because Jim Cantiello talked about it. They haven’t put it up yet.

This Farmer’s Daughter >>>>>>>>>> the studio FD from Hit Predictor

Riding With The Radio has a great catchy melody. The lyrics are OK.

It’s tough to live up to Ray Lamontagne’s version of Jolene.

    Crystal sounds GREAT.

  7. This is exactly how her album should sound like, raw, powerful and amazing. This version of FD, i can listen over and over and over again and still be amazed over and over… But the hitpredictor snippet, meh!

  8. I agree her album should sound just like this, really stripped down and not over produced. I really love Farmers Daughter, I could see myself listening to her cd in my car and feeling really relaxed.

  9. Her voice is amazing as always. For me, it’s being able to watch her perform what she clearly loves to do. Making good music. For that reason alone the album will be missing a little something. I do think the album will still be good music, just different, and will serve it’s purpose.

  10. This Farmer’s Daughter >>>>>>>>>> the studio FD from Hit Predictor

    Yup.

ok cant see them in canada

    Ah! That’s what it is!

I made myself a CD of most of her originals. I wished the album would be like that minus a couple for compromise, but it doesn’t sound like it will be. Bummer!

  12. I just don’t see how Jive can let the complete differences in sound remain, between how she sounds when she does performances like these, and then what it seems those clips are leading towards for her album. I know they aren’t final mixes but here again, people hearing these performances that like them won’t know what they’re listening to the way the album sounds like it’s going.

Honestly you can hear some of the influence of the studio process on her performance of Farmer’s Daughter – in the vocal harmonies with Frankie, and with what the percussion adds to the song. I can see perhaps adding piano to this too but really not anything else…it just doesn’t work.

  13. She sounds great, love Ridin’ With the Radio. I can’t wait to hear Hold On

  14. Maybe they burned and scrapped HO??? Okay a boy can dream!
Her and Frankie sound beautiful together. I wish he could have sang BG on the CD.

I hope these can go on youtube. Sucks having to watch those with it buffering during the songs

  15. I just spend the last hr or so cleaning my ear from all that garbage from yesterday… didnt help at all to find out later they werent even the finished tracks… sighs

    continuing listening …

  16. negativo and mozart4898– exactly what you said.

This is the Crystal whose album I want to buy.

I do not need another overproduced pop princess album — that turf in well covered.

Just hoping and praying that Jive and Bendeth get inspired to not fix what is not broken.

Note: I love pop music. I just do not love labels and producers cramming every artist into formulaic pop music.

  17. She sounds great. I hope there’s a significant market for this sound.

  18. I hope there’s a significant market for this sound.

I doesn’t seem like it is going to be how she is marketed by the label, unless they scrap the album production and start again from scratch.

  19. I just love Farmer’s Daughter; it is a very strong song and Crystal performs it beautifully. I think she might give a thought to not expaining/clarifying it: It resounds with many of us.

  20. Is it just me or does the label seems to be pushing for HO unfairly or even unethically? I listen to the 3 tracks leaked yesterday n day before and there is such a huge difference in the mix and quality of the recording for FD, HO and LWCA.

FD seems so bad but LWCA and HO sounds like they could be the final product for release. Crystals producer has confirmed that FD was the last one to be mixed and it wasnt the one floating on the internet. This raises a lot of questions and makes me think the label really wants HO to be the lead single. Since FD is a total mess of a mix and LWCA was a day late, whatever survey they do it wouldnt really be a fair comparison. Crystal might have given them a good fight and now they might want to prove her wrong like this.

  21. Great live performances by Crystal! For those who can’t see the above videos, they are up on youtube now.

  22. No snark intended but I fell asleep during Jolene. Its so boring. rwtr is just okay. was not excited about it. FD is good as usual.

  23. Okay the hook for FD has been in my head all night long and continues this morning. Jive, this is from the acoustic set! If only you would take note…sigh.

  24. OK. Didn’t get Crystal on AI, haven’t listened to her at all since then. TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY BY FD. TOTALLY.

  25. No snark intended but I fell asleep during Jolene.

My favorite from the above, captivating performance of a beautiful song

  26. OK. Didn’t get Crystal on AI, haven’t listened to her at all since then. TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY BY FD. TOTALLY.

Are you listening Jive? Bendeth? Leave these songs alone.

  27. Are you listening Jive? Bendeth? Leave these songs alone.

I thought that she would update her style in order to sound remotely current, but as it is, it is not marketable on the scale that a major label will expect, and it explains why the label took a completely different direction.

  28. weee finally heard them i loveeeeeeeeeee riding with the radio that should have been the first single! but then i like hold on also… i just luv me some CB!! period

  29. I thought that she would update her style in order to sound remotely current, but as it is, it is not marketable on the scale that a major label will expect, and it explains why the label took a completely different direction.

That is the key issue here and explains the differences between the live vs. recorded renditions of these songs. As it stands now, there’s a pretty significant disconnect between Crystal’s live performance of FD and the recorded version – very different mood, and it will be interesting to see what kind of rendition will be performed when she starts her CD promotion.

  30. As it stands now, there’s a pretty significant disconnect between Crystal’s live performance of FD and the recorded version – very different mood,

I actually thought Crystal sang the recorded version in a more upbeat manner in line with the music. Maybe her mood was different in the recorded version.

  31. This lady is definitely going to be selling a lot of concert tickets. Regardless how she does on the radio. (though I think she will do much much better then some think) I really love Farmers Daughter. I think this would do very well on Country radio. But I guess that is not the direction she is going. All I know is I will be buying her album for sure.

Just a Point of view here- You know Susan Boyle does not fit into any current format yet she was hyped and promoted correctly and look how well that turned out. I think the obsession of fitting in a genre sometimes is over killed. Crystal is an amazing talent. To bad some Exec didn’t create a back-story for her and get her album sold by that promotion. I think Idol does itself a huge disservice by not allowing Youtube version of the Idol performances to be allowed on the internet. I think there are many Idol performances that would have propelled some contestants from idol ala Susan Boyle. We have David Cook and Adam to name just two and though they both do well I think they both would have done a hell of a lot better if they performance were allowed to go viral on youtube and really introduced them worldwide. (I use David Cook and Adam Lambert as I do believe their performances of Billie Jean and Mad World would have exploded on Youtube. Maybe not exactly Susan Boyle 100 million hits success but pretty damn close.) I say all this as I think Crystal would have been one of the contestants that would have really benefited from performances being allowed on Youtube and get her really out there. It is really a great way to promote. Idol squanders this opportunity. Crystal would then be able to expand on this exposure. Anyway I am not fully explaining my thoughts so clearly I just hope someone understands.

Go Crystal you are a star in my book.

  32. I actually thought Crystal sang the recorded version in a more upbeat manner in line with the music. Maybe her mood was different in the recorded version.

I thought so too, which is why I thought that the mood of the two performances is so different. It’s really a pretty heavy-duty, serious song, emotionally and IMO the recorded version mutes a lot of that with the more upbeat rendition (which is why I thought that there was a disconnect).

Unless she rerecord the song, I don’t think we’ll get the live feel with the current recording even without the production and stuff.

  34. Jolene bores me, it doesn’t matter who sings it.

Acoustic songs and studio songs always sound different, that’s to be expected. I hated the background vocals in FD, it sounded cheesy on HitPredictor but the producer said it wasn’t finished. As for HO, it’s very Breakaway, but I don’t blame Jive for trying to go for radio play. Crystal did say she might buy her mom a house, she’s gonna need to sell albums and a hit single to do that. That advance won’t last forever. I still think they should have signed her to a country label.

‘Ridin with the radio’ sounds like ‘I’m Alright’ to me.

  35. I really think that comparisons of FD should wait until we know what we´re comparing to. Why compare to some clip which includes all kinds of “shit” as DB said, that will be removed?

  36. I thought that she would update her style in order to sound remotely current.

Really? I follow her career very closely and have never got the impression she intended to change her music style to fit Pop 40. If anything, she’s fought against it like a lioness protecting her cubs.

  37. Just a Point of view here- You know Susan Boyle does not fit into any current format yet she was hyped and promoted correctly and look how well that turned out. I think the obsession of fitting in a genre sometimes is over killed. Crystal is an amazing talent.

    Excellent point.

  38. Really? I follow her career very closely and have never got the impression she intended to change her music style to fit Pop 40. If anything, she’s fought against it like a lioness protecting her cubs.

There are other styles, not just top 40: pop-rock, rock, alternative, country, singer songwriter with original melodies and musical artistry etc.
Crystal live sounds like a 70s throwback, and if she wants to fight for a style that is stale then it’s fine, but she’ll be with an indie label by this time next year.

  39. She sounds great.. I just wish she would look to the audience more. I think this would help her connect more.

  40. Crystal live sounds like a 70s throwback, and if she wants to fight for a style that is stale then it’s fine, but she’ll be with an indie label by this time next year.

When I listen to music, I either like it or not. My head is not trying to label it to a style or era. What you consider “stale” I consider fresh. Crystal to me and fortunately many others, is like a breath of fresh air.

  41. This raises a lot of questions and makes me think the label really wants HO to be the lead single. Since FD is a total mess of a mix and LWCA was a day late, whatever survey they do it wouldnt really be a fair comparison.

Jive isn’t going to go to the public to help make this decision. They’ll make it within their 4 walls. If they were the ones to leak the songs, I doubt it was for feedback.

  42. How was LWCA a day late? Because it showed up on HitPredictor later than the other two?

  43. This lady is definitely going to be selling a lot of concert tickets.

Ain’t that the truth. If she comes anywhwere near me, I’m gonna tie myself in knots making sure I get there, no matter what her album sounds like. Period.

  44. I’ve finally figured out why I haven’t really connected to Crystal. Her voice is very nice, she sings well, has good interpretation, etc. but she doesn’t, yet, sell “herself” to an audience. I watched the radio song and her eyes were closed or severly downcast for more than half of the song. She rarely sings to the audience but tends to sing to her guitar…Her banter is cute but she doesn’t banter to the audience…she banters to her guitar with her head down.

I know I am more a visual person than an audio person so I want my entertainers to interact with me and make me feel like they are performing just for my benefit. I feel that Crystal has some bad habits that she still carries from her days of “singing for tips” (is it called bussing?) where she may have avoided eye contact with those dropping bills into her guitar case.

Hopefully, as she gets more comfortable, her interaction during a song will increase. Until then I would rather listen to her than watch her (just like on Idol) and that isn’t how I usually roll.

ETA: since Melissa Ethridge is Crystal’s idol..she needs to look at how she interacted with the audience and made them sit up and take notice…all with a guitar front and center.

  45. Tess – you hit the nail on the head. I saw her in Cincinnati at a Breast Cancer performance, and she totally underwhelmed me. I was a huge fan on the show so I was very disappointed. She didn’t have a set list, she tuned her guitar after every song which was annoying to everyone in the audience, and her repoire with the audience was horrible. You can see how awkward she is above in the Jolene video when she is telling the audience its ok to clap. She has a nice voice, but so do a million other people out there. She needs to up her game considerably if she wants to be a star. Luckily, Sara Bareilles closed the benefit in Cincinnati and was unbelievable so the night wasn’t a total waste, but my goodness, Crystal needs improvement.

  46. I just heard a James Taylor song on the radio and his background music is exactly the sound Crystal needs behind her. What you hear is the singing mainly and the music is crisp and clear and not a “white noise” sound like the previews that were released were.

  47. not a “white noise” sound like the previews that were released were.

I agree, but thought there was much less “white noise” or “smeared” sound in Lonely Won’t Come Around and therefore cleaner. Maybe because LWCA had already been mixed

  48. I watched the radio song and her eyes were closed or severly downcast for more than half of the song. She rarely sings to the audience but tends to sing to her guitar

See Ray Lamontagne performing, he does it the same way. And hes not doing too bad out there. And as Crystal has said hes one of her biggest influences. I see Crystal as a folk singer than anything else like Ray not as a rocker like Melissa.

Crystal is singing to the crowd and definitely connecting through her singing and not by any stage antics she has to do while performing. People listen by being quiet when she performs (I sense that this crowd totally gets that) and she pulled that joke when someone was reluctant to clap before Jolene :). However her songs does transcend to other genres and when she is doing something along the line of rock she definitely ‘awakens’ the crowd (See PTTP performance of ‘I Am’). Theres still improvements needed but she already has made the connection with her audience IMO as most people agree to on this thread

  49. (is it called bussing?)

Busking. I’ve done some, and I always tried to make eye contact, *especially* with people who dropped some money in. But I would say that, yeah, making eye contact when you’re basically begging on the street has a definite uncomfortableness factor, and everybody has a different approach, so it wouldn’t surprise me if this is a leftover habit for Crystal. …. Doesn’t really work on tv, though, for example.

“See Ray Lamontagne performing, he does it the same way. And hes not doing too bad out there. ”

I suspect that at least some in the audience may have a different response to men than to women. I think we’re sort of conditioned to accept broody inward men as performers more than women, just in general, for one thing. (aren’t there various psychological studies about women being expected to be more socially open and smiley and such?)

  50. I love her performances here. I hope they eventually release a live EP as an alternative to what I fear is a highly over-produced first album. As far as her ability to “connect” with the audience, she’s not unlike many folk/acoustic musicians I’ve seen perform. She’s never going to be a “big performance” type musician, which is fine by me. I do hope she tours in some smaller venues, which are more suited for her type of music.

  51. I watched the radio song and her eyes were closed or severly downcast for more than half of the song.

You’re probably Right? Sorry to hear about the problem with those 3rd year molars!

  52. I watched the radio song and her eyes were closed or severly downcast for more than half of the song.

You’re probably Right? Sorry to hear about the problem with those 3rd year molars!

Sorry about not making myself more clear…isn’t there a video posted where Crystal is singing a song with radio in the title? That is what I was referring to…since I was too lazy to look for the title while I was typing.

  53. YOU CAN TAKE YOUR OVERPRODUCED, OVER-ARRANGED, MIX OF CLUTTERED DOG SHIT AND SHOVE IT UP YOUR ASS!! JUST PUT THESE SONGS ON THE FUCKING ALBUM RAW AND LIVE, FOR CHRIST SAKE!!

Negativo, If I ever need a spokesman I can see you’re the one I need to call. Great Job! Exactly how I feel. And I’m thinking you’re speaking for a lot of Crystal fans. After listening to the “Snips” my first thought was that the “Alien clones,” Body Snatchers took over Bowersox’ body.

  54. Song list for Crystal’s CD.
    1. Ridin With The Radio
    2. For What It’s Worth
    3. Farmer’s Daughter
    4. Holy Toledo
    5. Lonely
    6. Hold On
    7. On The Run
    8. Kiss Ya
    9. Speak Now
    10. Mine All Mine
    11. Mason
    12. Arlene

  55. No “Sandman” and “Saved by Grace” :( If there was one song I wanted to hear with a full band, it was Sandman

  56. Anyone hear “Arlene” before?

Thats a new one right? Arlene was the driver on the girl’s bus and she wrote about her. I think its a road song more than anything with a country feel to it (think rem’ber her saying on an interview). Thats all the info I have about it.

8 mamasox originals + mason! thats a winning formula right there :D

  57. From what I understand it’s about her AI tour bus driver. It hasn’t been out anywhere that I know of.

  58. She must be holding back Sandman as an anchor for her second album. But kiss ya should sound great with a full rock band too. Arlene is the ode to the bus driver on the Idol tour. Pretty cool for her to get on the CD!

  59. No “Sandman” and “Saved by Grace” If there was one song I wanted to hear with a full band, it was Sandman

Yea m sad that Sandman is not on it as well, but the ones which made the cut are equally good IMO. I wanted SBG on this album more than anything, such a powerful, haunting song :( perhaps SBG or SM will be a bonus track?

  60. It surprised me that she hasn’t come up with much new stuff to add to the album.

Considering the great stuff she has to leave out, I´m not surprised. Why don´t labels use all 78 min a CD holds?

  61. I think most of these songs will be new to the masses. Obviously not new to CB fans as we’ve spent hours playing them. The arrangements will all be new to us I would think.

I’m new to to this blog but am amazed at some of the mean-spirited comments. Is that normal? I mean Idol is over so are they trying to affect her career or is it just sport?

    Ready already for the CD.

  62. No “Sandman” and “Saved by Grace” If there was one song I wanted to hear with a full band, it was Sandman

Yeah bummed about sandman and also no Grey Haired Rock Star :( Never was a fan of Saved By Grace

But yay to Speak Now and Mine All Mine!!

  63. I have read a lot of comments from a lot of individuals expressing numerous opinions about this wonderfully talented singer/songwriter/musician and my first comment would be, boy does she have a following and aren’t we all opinionated about her career. I think and hope that Crystal continues to move in the direction that she feels the most comfortable moving. I am sure that her husband, Brian, a fine singer/songwriter/musician himself is asked his opinion on these issues, so I feel the direction that Crystal is seeking is based on her own feelings and that of her husband and what’s best for her. She can’t be all things to everyone, she can only be who she is and I would say we all really like who she is or we would not be so passionate about the direction she is going and following along. She just started this journey and we just need to sit back and watch and enjoy the ride. Because her talent will take her to wherever she wants it to go. We can only observe the results and in my mind, the disappointments, so far very few and going to be just that, but the rewards of our being able to hear and feel her journey with her are going to be special. Based on the list of songs on the album, I don’t see one on there that I don’t think I will not like. Let’s just all hang on for the ride and let Crystal decide the path she is going to follow.

  64. Tess and JB1,

Interesting perspective. I guess you are a better judge of stage presence than Ellen and the AI judges or Judy McGrath (CEO and President of MTV who compared Crystal to music icons stage presence). This was supposed to be a session for a few exec’s and Crystal looks obviously tired, as she pointed out, from working on the album and getting ready with the new drummer the night before. She is sweating heavy and needs to relax as she is an extremely hard worker. I certainly do not, in my opinion of watching her many times, think she has a problem in this area. Just my honest view, but I am not the expert you guys are.

  65. des12548

Crystal does have a very good loyal fan base. I think most of her fans are not concerned with her direction given her choices, but of label guidance (which may or may not even be an issue).

My view on reading the concerns from her fans is that they realize and embrace the facts in our current market and society. For example, on independent polls taken regarding the AI vote (based on whose numbers you use) a certain percentage of one time voters picked Crystal and others Lee (Both fine with me and that is not the point). Let’s say 2/3 of one time voters picked Crystal because they relate to her music and emotions and 1/3 did not (actually, regardless of who the other person is). Here are some conclusions to consider in marketing that I think Crystal’s fans know:

    1. The 1/3 that does not support her typically admits she is talented, but does not prefer her for a number of reasons (songs very touching and they do not want to be “touched” or to show emotions, she is a folky hippie and I do not like that – this is the image thing most of us like that is not comfortable for others, she is a female and we are ok with pop and country – but not rock or folk, etc. etc. etc.)

    2. We do not think the label should drive the strategy of the album toward this 1/3 as they will likely not become fans for a while regardless of quality of song. Remember show.

  66. My point on the previous message is that the marketing effort should be driven at the base and then at open minded great music lovers and not at the 1/3 that are so heavily male pop driven that they will not approve of whatever you do. That is the Nation we live in and Dancing With Stars reflects the same attitude this fall.

These 1/3 will appreciate the efforts, but only after peer pressure and friends recognition are in favor of the artist. So, I still do not understand why the label does not do a 2 sleever – one directed at all and the other FD-Raw, unplugged, straight from the heart, etc. I loved the Red Hot Chili Peppers 2 CD set and thought the value was great. Crystal has the songs and the base loves them, why not let us download on itunes and stop all the streaming from youtube in our cars? Why deprive the base for the 1/3 who will be very slow to move, if at all?

This is the scenario for all artists. I had same attitude with the great Mikchael Jackson till I dated a girl that loved him
