  1. Mine All Mine’s lyrics are really simple and kinda unoriginal but sweet. But the melody’s really pretty. Crystal sounds beautiful.

  2. But the melody’s really pretty. Crystal sounds beautiful.

I agree. I love the tone of Crystal’s voice on this song. Lovely performance!

  3. From what I heard so far, this album will be a hit … as soon as someone countryfy it.
I don’t think this Americana-Folk-Rock-type music will sell. But that’s just me.

  4. Crystal tweet about Mine all Mine and Jeff Kazee piano solo on it

“@Jeffkazee solo on mine all mine blows me away.”

  5. I don’t think this Americana-Folk-Rock-type music will sell. But that’s just me.

I think that there’s definitely a market for this kind of music. The question is whether that market is large enough for sales of the CD to satisfy a major label (the bottom line).

  6. I think that there’s definitely a market for this kind of music. The question is whether that market is large enough for sales of the CD to satisfy a major label (the bottom line).

The market is there, and a profit can be big, but the main issue is how to reach that market, especially with someone who is coming off of AI, so she will have to work extra hard for those consumers to give her a chance.

  7. Thanks for posting. Man she gets around doesnt she! Hope she gets around to nebraska when she tours!

I really like mine all mine could do well in country maybe. Would love to hear some strings on it

  8. I really like mine all mine could do well in country maybe. Would love to hear some strings on it

Don´t know if there will be strings, but piano for sure, even a piano solo. Excuse my ignorance when it comes to county music, but wouldn´t a piano make is less country?

  9. Good points fuzzywuzzy and Elliegrll. I agree there is a market. I just don’t think Crystal will get enough of it to sell 200K units. And that may not be enough for Jive, I am afraid.

  10. Crystal has a lovely sweet voice and I find songs like these fit into her baliwick very well. Will she find an audience…yup. Will she sell tons…not likely. Will she be touring…yup, small dinner theaters and intimate settings.

The girl will be around for awhile…there is always an audience for her type of performance and songs. It may not be mainstream, but it will keep her financially satisfied.

  11. The secret weapon might be critical acclaim – and I don’t mean a good review or two, ala Alisoon. I mean across the board raves. Now Im not saying it’s going to happen but if it does, that might be her ticket out.

IA. I don’t know if that would happen but that would be how she can make an impact… as grammy bait or a prestige magnet. There are lots of labels that have an act or 2 like that. Don’t sell much, but adds gravitas or something.

  13. There are artists who have similar styles to Crystal who are critically acclaimed (Patti Griffin springs to mind for one)– not too many of them are huge sellers, but many of them make a comfortable living touring around the country and releasing albums. And occasionally they may have a song that crosses over and becomes a big hit and/or gets on a t.v. show or in a movie and sells really well. That’s probably what Crystal is going to end up doing, and I think she’ll be more than happy with that.

  14. By the way, do we know how many songs Crystal performed at this event — and what they were?

  15. By the way, do we know how many songs Crystal performed at this event — and what they were?

She performed 6, but I don´t know which songs

  16. Beautiful song…very Joni Mitchell in sound and style. I see no need to lump her into a category other than what she is…an acoustic singer/songwriter. She’ll sell albums because she has great authenticity and talent.

  17. I’m curious about something – is it normal for a record label to release a video for a debut album that isn’t the first single but is instead the title song? As has already been mentioned in another thread, Crystal tweeted that a video for Farmer’s Daughter will be coming out soon. That tweet was her response to a question asking if a video would be made for “Hold On” or “Farmer’s Daughter”.

Question to Crystal via twitter regarding video for “Hold On” or “Farmer’s Daughter”
    http://twitter.com/Mamasoxcd1214VI/status/3141996134793216

@crystalbowersox Do you have a video in the works for “Hold On”? Or Farmer’s Daughter?

    Answer from Crystal
    http://twitter.com/crystalbowersox/status/3320878058176513

@Mamasoxcd1214VI video for farmers daughter coming soon!!!! Yay!!””

So, from that twitter conversation it looks like a video for “Farmer’s Daughter” will be coming out but not one for “Hold On”.

  18. AndreaH, this was discussed somewhat the other day. Surprisingly, no conclusion :) Many are hoping this to be an indicator, that FD might after all be the first single. People here that know how the industry works, say that it would be very irrational to have a different video than the single. Hard not to agree with that. So, yes kind of confusing until we get more info

  19. Tweet from KFOG1045
@crystalbowersox stopped by & rocked the Playspace for a Monday morning treat! She played some tracks off her new album, in stores 12/14!

Isn´t http://www.kfog.com/Default.aspx an AAA radio station?

Could this mean Crystal is being promoted as an AAA type of artist?

  20. She’ll sell albums because she has great authenticity and talent.

I don’t think that anyone is denying that this will happen, but it’s a question of whether the quantity of sales (or artistic acclaim) will be compatible with retaining a recording contract with a major label.

Yikes! KFOG is my local radio station. I used to be a regular listener, but got out of the habit of late. Sorry I missed it! :( It is a very cool station. KFOG is known for introducing a lot of new artists, and is well-known for its Acoutic Sunrise or Sunset sets on the weekends.

ETA: I heard Michael Franti live on KFOG a few months ago. He got a very enthusiastic response for the folks in the studio!

  22. I wish Crystal would tweet when she is going to be on the radio before it happens LOL

  23. Crystals voice sounds so lovely and pure singing this song. Too bad her album can’t just be a recording of live performances. A lot of albums used to be live recordings from a club or festival.

  24. Her voice seemed to high pitched for the song. Sounded kind of weird. I don’t see radio stations playing this type of music, maybe country not even sure of that.

  25. I can’t see it being radio friendly in any format, either. The sound, the phrasing, the lyrics are just way too 70’s.

  26. Where is Crystal sitting numbers wise with the pre orders and all… when does her “single” actually drop? Is she charting anywhere? Thank you for any answers you may have numbers wise… or maybe I should be asking in the numbers thread?

  27. I know we’re not supposed to question the motives of other posters, but, you have to wonder about some of the comments. This is just good music. No specific era or genre. A nice love song/message for any generation. Crystal sings it beautifully and heartfelt. I can’t wait for the full band behind it.

  28. Well, I’m one of those folks who has liked some of Crystal’s songs and follow her ’cause I like her vibe. But I don’t think she’s going to make a huge splash, and there’s nothing wrong with that. KFOG is an AAA station and it’s a perfect fit for her. Just checked their playlog and recently they just played Mumford & Sons (who Crystal loves), John Lennon and Melissa Etheridge. Bingo!

I think she can make a nice living doing smaller venues and ultimately having a career like other AAA artists like Alanis Morrisette, Corinne Bailey Rae, and Fiona Apple.

  29. She sounds really nice. I’m hoping that she has enough of a following to play medium size venues like the Greek Theater in LA (5700 seats). Ray Lamontagne played there this summer. By the way, I saw bob weir and phil lesh of the grateful dead there a couple months ago and in addition to older types like me there were a lot of young people including hippie girls with dreadlocks! So there may be a younger demographic out there for her to tap into, just not the typical younger idol viewers.

  30. Beautiful song – this was one of the ones I hadn’t heard before, dangit I should have waited until the album came out, this would have been a nice little surprise on there. Lol. I guess I’m too impatient to wait.

I agree there is a market. I just don’t think Crystal will get enough of it to sell 200K units. And that may not be enough for Jive, I am afraid.

The crazy thing is that, as others have said, 10 years ago, or maybe just a little bit further back than that (the late 90s), she probably would have had a HUGE market. Jewel certainly did fine back then. For better or worse, Mine All Mine sounds to me like a song that would have been on Pieces of You – I know Crystal tried consciously to avoid sounding like her after someone told her how much she sounded like her, but this one really shows the connection. And honestly, I don’t care – good music is good music, I don’t care when it was made or who someone happens to sound like (that said, I think I actually prefer Crystal’s voice to Jewel’s).

Maybe the music world is ready for that sort of artist to come back around again. Those who were in high school or college when Jewel first came around, now would have kids (or might at least), and maybe nostalgia will kick in. Of course I don’t really know how popular Jewel ever was with others my own age when I was in high school – I liked her music, then again, I was weird. I do know she was constantly on the CHR/Top 40 station that I listened to a lot back then – and I know a lot of my classmates listened to the same station. Not saying I’d expect to hear her on there now, but maybe there will be a bigger market than people think, once her music actually gets out there.

  31. Oh that was sooo beautiful. Simple and just plain ol’ good!! I have seriously had tears in my eyes more than once from the beauty of her voice. But there is definitely more to her singing than just her voice. It’s heartfelt, as some have said already but really, to me, Crystal takes a/her story and just effortlessly tells it musically.

  32. Just checked Amazon out of curiousity to see how her album is doing on their bestsellers based off of pre-sales – she’s just out of the top 100 overall, 35 in rock, and actually 91 in pop (where I hadn’t seen her showing up before at all). (ETA – I mentioned this in reference to the “will she sell enough to satisfy her label” questions. I still think she’ll end up surprising a lot of people and sell more than enough to satisfy them, but that’s a different story.)

And wow, do they ever discount albums on there. List on hers is $11.98 but it’s marked down to $9.99. Then I look and Lee’s is listed as $13.98 and marked down to $7.99! Does Amazon usually mark albums down as the release approaches depending on sales, or are these just across the board sorts of discounts? I haven’t really ever noticed before, although I have noticed they almost never are selling at list.

  33. Beautiful song – this was one of the ones I hadn’t heard before, dangit I should have waited until the album came out, this would have been a nice little surprise on there. Lol. I guess I’m too impatient to wait.

You should check out this performance of the song, you can hear it better but no Frankie just her

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmkgIMs5KzY

  34. I also think Crystal will sell a decent amount of albums because she appeals to older folks, and they buy albums. If she gets played on Triple A and Hot AC, I think she’ll be fine, and I can see her having a long career.

  35. M excited to hear how this track would sound on the album… david b has said its one of his favorite tracks and crystal says theres a killer solo by jeff on it…I love the songs simplicity and her vocal as always is flawless…

Why hasnt Jive still settled on the single yet? It makes me worried a bit, I heard the radio premier of her songs on Q102 and they played both Hold On and Farmer’s Daughter. Apparently the DJ didnt know which one was her single either. Are they really going to promote two songs from now on? Or they still doing preliminary research to find out which one is more popular? Isnt it too late for that now?? I have a feeling that Jive is really clueless with regard to promoting an artist like Crystal. Except for the VH1 performance, the rest of the appearances so far seems to have come without their help, most prolly from her manager, or contacts made by Crystal herself.

  36. Eriko, thanks for responding to my question regarding the “Farmer’s Daughter” video. I’m afraid I had to post and run so I’m just now getting back to this thread.

mozart4898, I buy almost all of my CDs from Amazon because their prices are good, I receive them in two to three days (if in stock) and I get free shipping if I spend $25 or more. It’s just so easy. :)

  37. Why hasnt Jive still settled on the single yet? It makes me worried a bit, I heard the radio premier of her songs on Q102 and they played both Hold On and Farmer’s Daughter.

Hey wait…lol she’s actually had radio premieres of these songs? This is the first I’d heard anything about that – this wasn’t official was it? I agree it’s time they shit or get off the pot…well, maybe not the right metaphor but you know what I mean. I hope they’re not just planning to release both as singles and see which one gets more attention, and then put whatever efforts they’re going to make behind that song almost after the fact.

Lee’s price dropped because Amazon is price matching the Best Buy sales ad price for the week. His is $7.99 and Keith Urban’s is $6.99 for this sale week.

Crystal’s will probably change as well the week it releases. It will depend on the competition prices. Amazon automatically price matches the lowest price available at the time.

This makes sense I guess. I wasn’t at all trying to start something, just curious. Sheesh, CDs are really the only thing that have stayed the same or even dropped in price over a long period of time aren’t they? I remember in the 90s buying CDs, usually for something like $14.99. Rarely do you see a CD actually selling for that much now. If only the cost of gas dropped the same way…

  38. that was an interesting cover of For What It’s Worth. I kept thinking she was going to get shouty…but she never quite did.

  39. Hey wait…lol she’s actually had radio premieres of these songs? This is the first I’d heard anything about that – this wasn’t official was it?

It wasnt official, there was a tweet from the DJ about an hour early to broadcast. Think it was Sunday morning. Seriously Jive get your shit together and do some proper promoting for this girl. They havent even officially announced that her song FD is now streaming on myspace :S. Btw the version on myspace is the final version for FD. Didnt like HO though they did the best in terms of production for a pop song, but too much background “noise” for my taste.

Holy shit Crystal can sing to a nation FWIW is #EPIC. Just WOW :) Nice to see Frankie loosening it up on RWTR and calling out for clapping. The crowd response was quite awesome, they were loving mama fer sure. Crystal burping #FAIL lol, too much booze for mama hahah. Really enjoyed the videos, thanks mj, peetyb0y :=)

  40. I’m not sure what to think of FWIW yet – I’ll need to hear it on the album – for some reason I have a feeling her version of it is missing a lot when it’s just acoustic like this. That’s unusual too cause Crystal is usually awesome acoustic but something just seems to be missing for me.

And whoa…a different intro to Riding With the Radio (a good example of what I’ve said before – Crystal can do more than just hold and occasionally strum a guitar…most of the people this past season that used them had a lot more skill than they showed on it). For being a song that she wrote more or less as an anti-corporate music statement, something about the song just seems to scream for the radio to me. This is another song that I think will really surprise people on the album. It’s got a heck of a groove and with drums it’s gonna really kick. Sounds like a great first track for a CD, and I won’t be surprised if when Crystal does actually tour, it ends up being her “opener” then too.

  41. I know we’re not supposed to question the motives of other posters, but, you have to wonder about some of the comments. This is just good music. No specific era or genre. A nice love song/message for any generation. Crystal sings it beautifully and heartfelt. I can’t wait for the full band behind it.

I saw this when it was posted earlier too but didn’t comment…but truthfully even as someone who’s a big fan of Crystal, I can understand people not liking her music simply for what it is without any other motive really. Tastes in music run far and wide and really, while there are similar artists to Crystal, most of them aren’t mainstream and therefore people aren’t generally familiar with them, or used to hearing them (I myself am not really that familiar with many she’s been compared to, but she specifically really caught my attention early on).

I’ve actually even done “experiments” to this extent before – although they’re almost laughably predictable considering how far I’ve gone with them. One time working in a restaurant kitchen I switched our music (which came in through the satellite that TV came in on) to a channel that played baroque classical music – specifically they were playing harpsichord and cello at that point. I find that sort of music to be incredibly beautiful but let’s just say that no one else working in the kitchen found it to be even barely tolerable. In fact, the response bordered on violent (and the people I was working with that night were actually good friends). People do really just prefer what they prefer, and Crystal is different enough from the mainstream that some people just won’t like her music at all – whether or not it’s “beautiful” to some of us, and just like how none of my coworkers found anything to like about the classical station I had turned on that day.

  42. I see Franky starting to loosen up, He must be getting use to the larger crowds.

  43. “I can understand people not liking her music simply for what it is without any other motive really” mozart4898:

I would agree. No problem with people liking or disliking a particular artist or style. But I did say SOME of the comments and I was referring to those that go beyond and seem intent on somehow affecting her career or steering her potential audience by their comments. Maybe a little defensive, on her behalf.

I just think she does what she does very well and there is an inherent beauty in that. I do think the guy playing the percussion on the VH1 series added a nice touch.

  44. IMO Crystal totally killed that show…She even got a standing O at the end of farmers daughter (not like AI or talk shows where you follow the teleprompter), i even heard a girl shudder when she reached those soft spots, i bet the acoustics were awesome in there..

Love the bluesy and soulful vocal on For What it’s Worth.

I actually hear soul in her voice whichever genre she sings whether its singing country-ish songs like Mine All Mine, funky like On the Run or folksy like Farmers Daughter. The girl has got major soul and depth within her no doubt. I cant wait to hear For Whats its Worth on the album, definitely my favorite from all those performances. I also hear a lot of funk in addition to blues in FWIW. I think she made the song uber sexy like how she did with the Tracy Chapman song on AI :) Me likey v much :=)

  45. I certainly do not take a great deal of interest in some of these posts. Do you not question the mentality of someone who goes to a blog they know to be a fan site for an artist and put derogatory comments? Just not worth a response.

I read a great article in Rolling Stone this weekend regarding the US music industry. The article noted that 4 of the current top 10 albums, of all genres, right now are “country,” including the #1 seller for the year with Taylor Swift. More importantly, the article pointed out that a large majority of country fans actually still buy the CD’s whereas other groups download, pirate more, etc. The 20-30 age group has seen big gains the last several yein country, while rap and pop have decreased in that age group (surprising to me). Also surprising, over 3,000+ US country radio stations compared to 800 classified as pop and 300 (including current and classical) classified as Rock.

Interviewed the guys at CMA and country exec’s answered the question regarding the broad umbrella (i.e. Kid Rock on stage, Cheryl Crow, Kelly Clarkson, etc.) and CMA guys stated they are broad with a few exceptions – primarily they want “natural” music played on instruments and not snythesized music as background noise. Rolling Stone also noted that country music is now the genre, with the exception of several current male rockers, where you are most likely to hear the blazing lead guitar that used to dominate in classical rock.

Opened my eyes. I watch the CMA’s every year, but have not carried much more over until recently. Basically Zac Brown is traditional southern rock band (good one at that). When band members are interviewed they simply state they want to play what they consider good music. Sound familiar.

The point is, regardless of genre, there is a very big market in this country for good natural music and those that put comments on here to the contrary are doing so without any substantive point or data. Just irrelevant and uniformed personal info. I just found out from Rolling Stone that I may be a future Country fan. I have always liked many of the country acts, but looks even more are headed our way using this umbrella.

  46. Oh yea, the performances here are beyond good. The music does exactly what Crystal intended it to do – it “moves” us or “touches” us. Fantastic artist and a one of a kind in the world today. Great.

  49. Late posting comment. Just got on board but I have been anxiously awaiting to her Bowersox’ cover, “For What It’s Worth.” Now that I’ve listened to it, with my hands shaking, out of breathe, chills throughout my entire body, I can only say, “FWIW has been crystallized!”
